I have an old book by Mark Catesby. Half is in French and half in English, it is supposed to one of two volumes, it is not in very good shape, and most of the plates are missing. Do you have any thing more you could tell me about this book?

In December 1980, Congress signed into law the Alaska Lands Act, setting aside more than 104 million acres of prime wilderness habitat. To those itching to witness firsthand the nearly incomprehensible beauty of the 49th state, this jigsaw puzzle of parks, refuges, monuments, and wild and scenic rivers presents a dizzying array of opportunities to journey on foot, by car, or via boat through a wild land. The author makes it plain from the get-go that navigating one's way around such a humongous piece of real estate presents a unique set of considerations. Hence, Part I of her guide is a primer on everything from gold panning etiquette to iceberg and glacier do's and don'ts. Once oriented, informed, and thoroughly equipped, you're ready to choose from an A-Z listing of national and state parklands. Canoe along the Kobuk River's scenic canyons and wetlands (plan your trip in June and you won't need a flashlight). Check out Chugach State Park's Turnagain Arm, a fjord with one of the highest tidal variations in the world. Admire Tlingit and Haida Indian totem poles at Totem Bight State Historic Park. Or, at Denali National Park, stand amazed as you view wolves stalking caribou, grizzly bears scratching their backs on road signs, and red foxes playing with their kits (not to mention North America's tallest peak in the background). Alaska is a big and bold land that awaits your exploration, but traveling through rugged country requires careful planning and preparation. Use Alaska's Parklands both to acquaint yourself with the basics--road conditions, weather tables, public transportation--and to get the most from your explorations of the "Last Frontier."

5 out of 5 stars Gail Howard Lotto: How to Wheel a Fortune.......2004-04-18

Gail Howard's Book entitled: `Lotto: How to Wheel a Fortune' (397 pages) will be one book every lotto player should have in their possession to help win the lottery! Not only going after the Jackpot, but winning many smaller prizes as well that are available. This book will make you sit up and take notice that there really are ways to actually drop the high lottery odds to help you win playing the pick 6 lottery. This is explained very well in this book along with many wheels that will help you win multiple prizes. (Gail first introduced lotto wheeling systems to the American public in 1983).

Just like the `boxing' methods some use of a 3-4 digit game, you can do the same with Lotto! Except with lottery games, there are many more numbers than just 3 or 4 to deal with. But no matter if your game is a 6/25,--6/49 or higher, this highly informative book with show you the way to reduce the high odds of these games.

`Lotto: How to Wheel a Fortune' has already helped many win thousands of lottery prizes, including myself! At least 74 Documented Jackpot winners have used Gail's systems to win the lottery. All wheels are guaranteed as to have no holes and are Balanced Wheels! This means you can use them with confidence, and also they will show you maximum and minimum win guarantees that you can expect to win.

Take a peek inside the book now with the `excerpt' feature and see for yourself some examples.
So stop throwing money away on quick picks and wheel your number selections to start winning now!

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" addition for any lottery system.......2003-07-12

I purchased "Lottery Master Guide" and " Lotto How to Wheel a Fortune". They are both fantastic books. I was " blown away" with the vast amount of tracking techniques that Gail Howard managed to uncover. I've been working for years programming my own system: I could have save a lot of time and effort if I had first found Gail's books and computer programs. a plethora of "wheels" to choose from -- great for any betting budget.

5 out of 5 stars Lotto How to Wheel a Fortune.......2000-08-14

This book is a must have for the serious lottery player. The simple yet straight forward suggestions and systems in this book will have you winning more often. Don't expect to win all the time but you will definetly win more often. This is one book that is worth it's money in winnings!

The author of Two Against Hitler, Dippel follows the lives of six relatively prominent German Jews from January 30, 1933, when Hitler became Chancellor, until late 1938. The six are Hans-Joachim Schoeps, the leader of an extreme right-wing group; Nobel prize-winning chemist Richard Wilstatter; banker Max Warburg; Leo Baeck, who was Berlin's chief rabbi; columnist Bella Fromm; and journalist and editor Robert Weltsch. The thread that ties the six together is their decision to remain in Germany during the Nazi era.

3 out of 5 stars good representation of a concerned Jewish community.......2000-05-17

This book gives a good representation of what happened in the Jewish community as Hitler grew in power. This shows the transformation from a community that had little regard for a Jewish identity to being bonded together by that mere fact alone. Dippel shows the unfortunate internal struggles that prevented any full Jewish unity (from assimilation, emigration, & fighting back to denial and prejdice). It allows you to see just what was felt during a confusing time in Germany & what was being done about it.

Is there something in the water at SVJH?

Bethel walked into school one day and everyone was part of a couple. Now all anybody can talk about is who's going with whom and who passed somebody a note and giggle giggle giggle!

          It makes her sick.

And happy that she'll never be that way!

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bethel feels like a third wheel between Jess and Renee........2005-04-17

When her older sister,Renee comes home from College,Bethel wants to be fast runner. Renee is the perfect student. Jamell like Bethel, but I think Bethel likes Jamel too. She does feel like a third wheel that come between Renee,Jessica and Jamell.

4 out of 5 stars Bethel the Third Wheel.......2005-02-24

So what if Bethel would rather run than make kissy faces at a boy? So what if everyone else would rather make kissy faces than anything else? That doesn't mean that Bethel has to. Just because everyone else has a boyfriend doesn't mean that she has to drop everything in search of some guy. But the funny thing is, she doesn't have to search, because the guy that she just might like has finished his search...and it's ended with Bethel. But he can only go so far with poems, notes, and explanations before the entire school is looking at the two as some kind of entertainment. After all, "the guy" is a seventh grader.

This was a good book. Not the best I've read, but interesting. It also talked about Jessica and Damon's relationship a little bit, and Salvador's parents coming to visit. That was pretty interesting, since Salvador doesn't get along great with his parents. Overall, I recommend it if you like the SVJH series.

          4 out of 5 stars Bethel + Jameel?.......2000-09-03

I like Bethel, and I think she was fine without a boyfriend. It seems like writers today want to pair everyone up! But I do like Jameel, and I think Bethel could have been nicer to him. He did bug her a lot but she was pretty rude when he was super nice to her all the time. I was glad in the end she decided to dance with him at the Beach Blowout. (btw, I know in #18 they are b/f and g/f) Damon and Jessica also have some little misunderstandings- Damon thinks something is wrong with Jessica because she's so out of it all the time (she's just very tired- read the book to find out why) and Jessica thinks that Damon doesn't like her anymore because he hasn't asked her to the blowout. But things work out in the end! This book wasn't my favorite, but it was still okay.

          4 out of 5 stars just right!.......2000-07-07

it was pretty much a good book, except that the author kept stressing the fact that Bethel liked Jameel but she didn't want to admit it. I liked the way Damon and Jessica's relationship was mentioned in away that makes fans want to buy the next book.

          1 out of 5 stars BADDDDDDDDD!.......2000-01-31

THIS BOOK WAS TOTALLY BORIIIINNNGGG! IT ONLY IS ABOUT BETHEL'S PROBLEM ABOUT ASKING JAMEEL, A 7TH GRADER OUT. I MEAN, WHY CAN'T JAMEEL JUST STOP BUGGING HER AND WRITING HER POEMS AND JUST LAY OFF? AND YOU KKOW WHAT'S REALLY STUPID! JAMEEL ENDS UP NOT BUGGING HER ANYMORE, BETHEL DOESN'T LIKE THAT, AND DANCES WITH JAMEEL! DDDUUUUMMMMBBBB! I'M DISAPOINTED! I WOULD THINK PASCAL COULD DO BETTER!

            Book Description

Inviting us to "wallow in the middle," Judith Roof offers a fresh, inventive look at female comic secondary characters who, though never on center stage, play an indispensable role in enriching and complicating the course of the narrative. Paying attention to these characters shows that narrative is not always as straight as it might seem.

Focusing on such superb comic seconds as Eve Arden, Thelma Ritter, Rosalind Russell, and Whoopi Goldberg, Roof explores what is queer about the middle--in the sense of eccentric and in terms of desire--and how that queerness functions as a part of and an antidote to narrative. Shrewd, pragmatic, self-denying, perceptive, outspoken, and witty, these female characters are able to cross the bounds of social groupings, gender expectations, and propriety, presenting possibilities that threaten the "fitting ends" of narrative closure: norms such as heterosexuality, production, reproduction, knowledge, and victory.

Roof characterizes female seconds as modern-day versions of the Shakespearean fool, able to speak the truth without being punished for it. Discussing films ranging from Mildred Pierce, Auntie Mame, and Rear Window to Stage Door, Sister Act, and The Associate, she shows how Hollywood's recasting of the wise servant figure as female, unattached, and lower class reflects more general cultural anxieties about the role of women, gender confusion, race, and class distinctions. She also tracks changes in the form and function of the minor and middle from the stylized, hierarchical economy of classical Hollywood film to the expanded, serial variety fitted to 1990s commodity culture.

A meticulous, playful rereading of Hollywood classics from the margins, All about Thelma and Eve registers both delight in these female characters and discernment of their integral role in unseating narrative and other norms.

                      Book Description

The development of appropriate catalytic systems in the synthesis of fine chemicals is in constant progress. This book provides an overview of organic reactions catalyzed by clays (natural, activated and modified, including pillard clays) or performed by clay-supported reagents. The book should be of considerable interest to all research groups (academic and industrial) involved in heterogeneous catalysis. Organic reactions on clays are organized by reaction type. A rather comprehensive coverage of the literature is performed, including patent literature. Throughout, the approach to the subject is rational rather than empirical. Book Description

The two short novels in this volume follow the adventures of two unlikely heroes-delinquent pícaros living by their wits among corrupt priests and prostitutes, beggars and idle gentlemen, thieves, tricksters, and murderers. Lazarillo de Tormes (1554), published anonymously, provided a literary model for Cervantes' Don Quixote and describes the ingenious ruses employed by a boy from Salamanca to outwit a succession of disreputable masters. Francisco de Quevedo's The Swindler (1626) is a comic yet brutal and sordid account of a servant who wants to become a gentleman but ends up a cardsharp and common criminal.

I find it simply miraculous being able to render into a foreign language such as English both the richness and flavour of the world of El Lazarillo de Tormes. Congratulations.

5 out of 5 stars Lazarillo de Tormes.......2006-08-21

All I can say is that I never would have believed that this story (short and not so sweet) was written in the 1500s! Truthfully, not much has changed as far as "the church" and "the nobility" are concerned. There is a reason this little story has endured and it is because the world's problems, like the world's fashions, instead of petering out and dying, seem to recycle themselves for the sake of posterity (lest we forget).
Like Voltaire's "Candide," this short story offers a scathing social commentary paired with an expert knack for dark comedy. I literally laughed outloud all the way through. The abuses of young "Lazaro" are unfortunate but irresistable...and not without truth.
This is a two to three hour read at most. You have absolutely nothing to lose. If you have a good sense of humor and do not take the "powers that be" too seriously, you would be a fool not to give it a try.

4 out of 5 stars Great examples of an old literary tradition.......2006-02-08

I picked this book up on a whim, having a certain fondness for literary tales of thieves and con-men, and I was not disappointed. The forward of the book would give you the impression that the Spanish invented the picaresque novel, a point on which I would differ, given that Petronius' The Satyricon, which while not a novel per se, is still the very spirit of the picaresque literary theme and is older by far. Nonetheless, I found these two short novels both entertaining and surprisingly educational, showing us if nothing else that human motivations and susceptibility to temptation and trickery really never change. The cons and tricks employed by the "heroes" of both novels are easy to identify with, being as many are the Renaissance era equivalents of modern day identity theft and business fraud. And as smaller examples of the literary style of the time, they also fit well alongside the much more famous work of the period, Cervantes' Don Quixote, in both the feel of the culture of that time and place and of the universal traits of human nature that transcend time and place. The translation is well done and reads quite smoothly, even though as it notes in the foward that some jokes, puns and other comic references were so tied to the language and the time that only lengthy footnotes could attempt to explain them in context, which would have marred the readability considerably.

My only disappointment, and it is a minor one, is that The Swindler ends referring to a second volume which apparently was never written. This may have been intentional, a literary device of sorts. Or, since DeQuevedo never intended The Swindler to be published in the first place, and when it did appear, never claimed authorship, it may simply be that he never got around to writing the alluded-to second volume. Still, that aside, both short novels are worth reading for anyone who has a fondness for the picaresque or for pieces of that period of Spanish literature.

I tend to take more chances with my purchases on shorter
works and was rewarded in my impulse buy in this one.

These two novellas of scraggly characters trying to connive
their way to the top (or merely survive) are a pleasure to read,
fast-paced, full of wit, and a wonderful portrait of Spanish society in the 1600s.

5 out of 5 stars profound, edifying and more entertaining than televison.......2005-03-03

"Picaresque." "Bildungsroman." "Beginning of the novel."
Literary historians (some of them, anyway) tell us that these works mark the transition from pamphlet and chapbook to the protonovel, picked up by Cervantes, later by the French & English novelists. I'll take their word for it.
These books are a lot of fun to read, if you enjoy fast comic action with flashes of pathos, and can stand some coarseness and brutality mixed in. Welcome to Spain in the 1500's. Welcome to Planet Earth.
The translation is excellent standard English, not quite the colloquial, which would be an affectation, under the circumstances.
Students of Spanish might well want to try "Lazarillo" in Spanish. It's surprisingly un-difficult for the motivated intermediate student. There have been several annotated editions for English speakers over the years.
What a wonderful country Spain has been, ever since the Romans incited war against Carthage by drawing a line in it. And still is. Thanks, Spaniards, for throwing out your stupid government that kow-towed to the American warmongerers.

4 out of 5 stars At the roots of the Picaresque........2007-04-15

In the last few years I've read so many novels that professed to be modern Picaresque novels, that I thought that it was time to read the original Picaresco works from which they draw reference.

Lazarillo de Tormes, published anonymously in 1554, is generally acknowledged as the first example of the genre. The picaro of Lazarillo is not a career criminal, but instead a poor boy whose mother cannot feed him after his father dies. She entrusts him to the care of a blind beggar, and in his hands he learns hardship, cynicism and the sting of hunger.

The hallmark of the Picaresco is that the picaro at some point chooses the criminal indolent life and becomes the cynical tough who is able to observe the hypocricies of his daily world from outside the margins of respectability. While both of the books mine this theme, Lazarillo is in some respects more interesting since his "choice" is less clear. He is clearly motivated by poverty and hunger. Even though flawed, the satire is sharper as his pathos is deeper.

It is interesting to see how the genre evolves with The Swindler, written in 1608 by Francisco de Quevedo. The picaro in The Swindler, Pablos, is born bad. His father is a criminal barber and his mother is a witch. Every chance that he has to get money, he loses it or spends it and has to flee to a new situation with a new challenge. As with Lazaro, there is the strong sense that even if Pablo wanted to go straight, fate would be against him. Unlike Lazaro, however, Pablo has a real glee in wrong-doing that becomes nearly as much part of the point as the social satire.

These are short novels, and interesting in their own right. Must-reads for anyone interested in the Picaresque novel. Should-reads for students of Spanish literature.
