Beautifully written and enduring book.......2007-08-14

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Migrations to Solitude and I recommend the book for its subject matter, which is the quest for privacy in a crowded world. The book is divided into 12 "profoundly original" essays that have a common thread of a spiritual journey. I felt very much connected to the author while reading the book and I didn't want the book to end.

The book was published in 1992 prior to the current invasion of privacy by the present administration. I wonder what Helperin would have written if she knew the invasiveness of Big Brother in our lives today. A quest for Solitude today might be impossible now in our society and all of the places of solitudes are perhaps gone for ever like the Dodo bird.

The investigation of multiscale problems in multibody system contacts is a most interesting and timely topic which has been the subject of intensive research for more than one decade. While many questions have been answered and the mechanically sound description and simulation is increasingly applied in practical engineering problems, this IUTAM Symposium facilitated discussions between researchers active in the field and enabled us to review the state-of-the-art and to identify for the years to come the hot topics which require further efforts.

It was especially useful to bring together scientists from closely related but traditionally distinct fields such as multibody system contact, molecular dynamics, finite element contact, collision detection or the mathematics of unilateral contact. It is observed that the once clear boundaries between these fields are blurring and an exchange of ideas will accelerate the development with mutual benefits.

Multiscale problems occur very naturally in contact mechanics. Typically the contact forces and stresses are very high and they are transmitted within a very short period of time. This leads to questions, e.g. how the slow rigid body motion and the fast motion changes can be considered simultaneously or how interface effects couple to wave propagation and the large-scale motion.

The purpose of the symposium was be to provide a basis for discussion and exchange of new concepts and ideas to scientists from all over Europe and the world. This proceedings volume summarizes contributions of many authors active in the field and gives insight in very different areas of this fascinating research.

Like a Breath of Fresh Air.......2005-12-13

I am very excited about this book! In my humble opinion there are flaws in the editing, layout, printing, and presentation of this book, but the author has created a work that is incredibly interesting, creative, and wonderful and I am glad it was published, flaws and all! I found myself immersed in the story, wishing I knew more about 14th-century European history and customs and wanting to purchase French-English reference materials! I am still wandering in Renee and Henri's magic fog and do hope and pray that this is just the beginning of many more Renee and Henri books, with more on the cast of characters like Doctor Ishmael, Jehudah, Comte d'Auch and Constance, Sir Petro and Maria (did he and his wife adopt those six orphans?), and Brother Matthew, as well as many others by this author. i think it is great to have Sir Galahad as a villainous character...what interesting possiblities that may provide for future writings!

I really found myself wishing that English had been used for titles with French used for subtitles - I think this would have created less frustration frustration for the reader and would have allowed the story to be read more fluidly by those of us who took Spanish in school instead of French! I absolutely adored the poetry, but thought that it sometimes interrupted the flow of the story when used at the beginning of each new chapter, and as a literary device should have been used more sparingly and within the context of the bigger story being told (as it is done in several places in the novel.) I would love to see a published "Special Edition" or "Companion Guide" ( titling it something like "Brother Matthew's Sojourners Guide to the 14th-Century") where the original poetry, Scripture references, French language helps, maps, architectural diagrams and blueprints, battle strategies, Knight-Warrior traditions, geneology and ancestral charts, and other historical-fictional materials could be presented to the reader for their study and pleasure. This writer, T.S. Beckett, has a gift for writing historical fiction and I was reminded of contemporary authors such as John Jakes, Diana Galbadon, and Clive Custler (just a few of my favorites). The writing also shared qualities that I have read in the writings of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien that emphasize the quest for truth, honor, love, and significance - rising above circumstances and station and the perceptions of others - fulfilling the dreams, the destinies, the promises.
I absolutely loved the scripture references and the poetry, and enjoyed the light study of the contrasts and similarities between a variety of Christian traditions, Islam, and Judaism. Very refreshing to have the great religions of the world portrayed with such sensitivity, honesty, and even-handedness. The fun is as much in the exploration as it is in the extrapolation!

Congratulations on a great first novel! I look forward to many more years of reading pleasure from this talented author!
