Book Description
This breakthrough book describes the games that nations and organizations play in order to exploit the ocean's migratory fishery resources in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Mediterranean waters. It examines the attitudes and actions of different countries, fishermen, and consumers, all lobbying for greater allocations for themselves while the supply is being rapidly depleted. Stephen Sloan weaves together his provable theory that the oceans are being depleted three times faster than is reported by scientists. He uses simple formulas and addresses what the numbers mean in a biological ecological sense, and whether they match up with those found in statistical reports.
OCEAN BANKRUPTCY offers a fresh look into world conservation. The author tells this unique story through accounts of international meetings of government delegations, lobbyists, special interest groups, and nongovernmental environmental organizations, along with other fisheries groups. The book utilizes nonscientific jargon that appeals to the large number of people who are concerned about the health of our oceans, and ultimately, the health of our planet.
Customer Reviews:
I Don't Share the Others' View of this Work!.......2007-10-08
This book read like a bunch of loosely connected letters that did not keep my attention for very long. If it were not for the fact that I do not start a book and not read the whole thing, I would have not read the rest of this book past Chapter 3. There are many better wrtitten books that are concerned with the state of our oceans, so research another and don't waste your time.
Most Important Book on Saving our Fisheries and Oceans!.......2003-06-04
If you are looking on how to improve your fishing methods or where-to-go fishing, Stephen Sloan?s Ocean Bankruptcy is not the book. Steve has taken the pulse of our oceans repeatedly through the years, and let me tell you something: this book is not only for anglers, but for everyone on earth who is concerned about our fisheries, our environment, our oceans, our earth.
Every decade a book comes along that alerts us to various problems that face our world.
Ocean Bankruptcy is the environmental book for the present decade. Compares with Rachel Carson?s Silent Spring in importance.
With the tremendous demand for seafood around the world, huge commercial longline boats are raping our oceans for quick profits. Unless something is done, and done quickly, our oceans may never recover.
Sloan is not afraid to duke it out with wealthy individuals, influential friends, powerful lobbies and he even takes on countries themselves. He names names. I?ve never read a more gutsy environmental book; Steve is lucky to be alive! There is mystery, intrigue, deception, tension so the book is a real page turner, but, more importantly, it is absolutely necessary reading if we are to save our oceans.
Sloan is one of our best, most versatile anglers today. He has done it all. Fished everywhere. H e could enjoy fishing the world?s best places for the rest of his life; instead he is greatly concerned about the future of the oceans and devotes most of his time, energies and resources to help save our fisheries.
CNN, 60 Minutes, Dateline and PBS would do well to interview Sloan regarding Ocean Bankruptcy.
Buy this book immediately... if not sooner.
Eye Opening View of World Fisheries.......2003-04-01
This fast paced book about the destruction of our world fisheries reads like a Clancy novel, the intrigue alone will amaze you. Best of all Sloan actually comes up with easy solutions to these problems. This is a must read whether you like to fish, eat fish, or are concerned about the environment.

(5 1/2 X 8 1/2, 238 pages, black-and-white pictures, maps)
Customer Reviews:
Very Useful.......2006-06-28
The descriptions of the walks and of the excursions (presumably car-based) appear very useful; we'll be trying some of them in a few weeks. The book would have been more attractive & useful with more photos, especially color photos, & more maps would also be helpful--but what's there will help a great deal in prioritizing what we do.
best hiking anywhere.......2003-09-28
The Italian dolomites offer the best hiking anywhere. Lost of variety great food reasonable prices and lots of people who speak English. This book gives accurate information, wonderful hotel recommendations and suggests towns I would not have discovered elsewhere. A must for anyone who hikes. The hikes may be easy for some, but it there are lots of more diffucilt options when you get there. We followed the Liptons advice and had a fabulous trip!

Book Description
When Sey's mom suddenly leaves for Europe, the 16-year-old is left with a new, supposedly "normal" family, the Kangs. Yet, when Sey's foster brother turns out to be a sister, she begins to realize that her new home is weirder than her former one. Trying to escape the craziness, Sey looks for a job so she can move out. However, the more she learns about her new sibling, the more she realizes how much their lives are intertwined. The bizarre network of relationships continues in the second volume of this popular Korean romance.

I.N.V.U. 4 At Last!! Kim Kang Won does it again........2007-05-21
I have been hooked by this manhwa author. She is the most intriqeing author I know. Nothing she puts on paper or in picture is boring...ever...I love I.N.V.U. and I am so excited that book four is finally making it past the red tape and being published in September. The Queen's Knight is another series she writes and it is almost completely out in Germany...up to book 15. What a great series! Hot men, drama, humor, mystery, beauty, fantasy..it's all there!
There is finally an expected release date!.......2007-03-27
This is an incredible manga. I really love the art & style of Kim Kang Won. She has finished Queen's Knight & has restarted the series. I hope that it makes it's target date of September '07 for US release. It looks like it has already been released in Italy...
Don't Get Too Attached.......2007-03-01
I adore this shojo manga, with it's beautiful art, interesting plotlines, and loveable (not to mention very cute!) characters. Unforunately, the manga artist who created this title has put it on hiatus while she works on other projects. Volume 4 won't be coming out until the artist returns to this series. (Which she said she will eventually, but no idea when.) So while this series is extremely addicting, it's going to leave a bad taste in your mouth when you realize the cliffhanger is going to be there a long, long time.
Luv it, but where's volume 4?.......2005-04-12
I absolutely love this series with all of its twists and turns. However, with this volume as a cliffhanger, I cannot wait till the next one comes out. However, it has been so long that I doubt they will release volume 4. It's a little annoying, too, because this is the kind of series where you truly need to know what happens.
A little gem from Korea...!.......2005-02-24
I.N.V.U. was the first Korean manhwa I ever read, and despite my initial difficulty with the -new to me!- Korean names in vol.1, I enjoyed all three volumes immensely, and I'm looking forward to vol.4, whenever it comes out! I.N.V.U. has real characters that could be living down the road, even if some of them seem to be constantly dealing with extreme situations. They are the kind of characters you get to care about and want to see what happens to them next. Some of them are so easy to identify with, although its been a long time since I left school! I like the way we get a glimpse of the inside world and the psychology of this particular sample of modern Korean schoolgirls, their everyday life and problems. The style is very similar to Japanese manga -and having read so many manga in my life that I can't even count them, I found I.N.V.U. both comfortably familiar and pleasantly refreshing. Thanks and congratulations to Tokyopop for taking the initiative to introduce Korean manhwa in English -and the same goes for the other companies following it up. I can only wonder what happened to vol.4 of I.N.V.U. -it seems to be taking a long time to come out!

Book Description
"A fascinating book...indispensable to all those in the field..." —Trends in Neuroscience
"An extremely useful reference book for brain browsers and nice browsing for psychiatrists..." —American Journal of Psychiatry
"Particularly suitable..." —Nature
Now available in paperback, this provocative work offers a comprehensive and insightful analysis of the functional relationship between brain organization and human behavior. Brain Activation presents classic and emerging experimental approaches for mapping brain activation in vivo, using biochemical markers and modern neuroimaging techniques.
Written by a pioneer in the field, this volume concentrates on the relationship between structure and function in the human brain at the cellular, neuronal population, and complex system levels. Relying on information obtained from PET studies and other tracer imaging methods, Brain Activation provides a detailed description of techniques for functional dissection of the living human brain, including: cognitive stimulation and anatomical localization, measurement of physiological and biochemical alterations, and the principles of cortical field and population-activation.
Brain Activation provides a structure-by-structure analysis of human brain activity, with detailed functional characterizations of the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, temporal lobe, limbic system, and subcortical structures. Its integrative approach clarifies the intricate relationship among behavior, mental activity, and physiological events that accompany brain activation.
Brain Activation is compelling reading for neuroscientists and cognitive scientists, and for researchers interested in the expanding application of neuroimaging. Specialists in neurophysiology, neurochemistry, and anyone fascinated with the functional organization of the human brain will find this a valuable and essential reference.

Description:
How fast are we in accessing world knowledge? In two experiments, we tested for priming for word triplets that described a conceptual script (e.g., DIRECTOR-BRIBE-DISMISSAL) but were not associatively related and did not share a category relationship. Event-related brain potentials were used to track the time course at which script information becomes available. In Experiment 1, in which participants made lexical decisions, we found a facilitation for script-related relative to unrelated triplets, as indicated by (i) a decrease in both reaction time and errors, and (ii) an N400-like priming effect. In Experiment 2, we further explored the locus of script priming by increasing the contribution of meaning integration processes. The participants' task was to indicate whether the three words presented a plausible scenario. Again, an N400 script priming effect was obtained. Directing attention to script relations was effective in enhancing the N400 effect. The time course of the N400 effect was similar to that of the standard N400 effect to semantic relations. The present results show that script priming can be obtained in the visual modality, and that script information is immediately accessed and integrated with context. This supports the view that script information forms a central aspect of word meaning. The RT and N400 script priming effects reported in this article are problematic for most current semantic priming models, like spreading activation models, expectancy models, and task-specific semantic matching/integration models. They support a view in which there is no clear cutoff point between semantic knowledge and world knowledge.

Description:
Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), responses in human somatosensory cortex were quantified in response to changes in the amplitude of peripheral stimulation during (1) passive vibration and (2) an attention-demanding tactile tracking task whereby changes in vibration amplitude were used to guide motor behaviour. Functional MRI was conducted using a scanner operating at 1.5 T, and vibration was delivered to the volar surface of the right index finger with a custom-built magnetomechanical device. Results showed that primary somatosensory cortex (SI) reliably reflects changes in vibration amplitude applied to the finger during passive vibration and also in the presence of a task that modulates the activity in SI. Secondary somatosensory cortex did not reveal any clear relationship with vibration amplitude but was more often activated during the attention demanding tracking task compared with passive vibration. The present study supports an increasing stimulus-response relationship between vibrotactile stimuli and activity in SI that persists during attentive, active states.

Description:
The spatio-temporal dynamics of cortical activation underlying auditory word recognition, particularly its phonological stage, was studied with whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG). Subjects performed a visuo-auditory priming task known to evoke the phonological mismatch negativity (PMN) response that is elicited by violations of phonological expectancies. Words and non-words were presented in separate conditions. In each of the 318 trials, the subjects first saw a word/non-word (e.g., 'cat') that was soon followed by a prime letter (e.g., 'h'). Their task was to replace mentally the sound of the first letter of the word/non-word with the prime letter, thus resulting in a new word/non-word (e.g., 'hat'). Finally, an auditory word/non-word either matching or mismatching with the anticipated item was presented. In most subjects, a PMNm followed by a later, N400m-like negativity was obtained in the left hemisphere to the mismatching auditory stimuli. A similar response pattern was obtained in the right hemisphere only in a few subjects. Source localization of the N1m, an index of acoustic analysis, and the PMNm and N400m-like responses was performed using L1 minimum-norm estimation. In the left hemisphere, the PMNm source for the words was significantly more anterior than the source of the N400m-like response; for the non-words, the PMNm source was significantly more anterior than the sources of the N1m and the N400m-like response. These results suggest that the left-hemisphere neuronal networks involved in sub-lexical phonological analysis are at least partly different from those responsible for the earlier (acoustic) and later (whole item) processing of speech input.

Description:
Two same/different discrimination tasks were performed by amateur-musician subjects in this functional magnetic resonance imaging study: Melody Discrimination and Harmony Discrimination. Both tasks led to activations not only in classic working memory areas-such as the cingulate gyrus and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex-but in a series of premotor areas involved in vocal-motor planning and production, namely the somatotopic mouth region of the primary and lateral premotor cortices, Broca's area, the supplementary motor area, and the anterior insula. A perceptual control task involving passive listening alone to monophonic melodies led to activations exclusively in temporal-lobe auditory areas. These results show that, compared to passive listening tasks, discrimination tasks elicit activation in vocal-motor planning areas.

Classic Mark Twain.......2005-05-27
This book is a great introduction to the greatest American storyteller of all time. I was fortunate enough to purchase this book when I was a teenager and discovered, for myself, how great of a storyteller Mr. Twain truly was. These stories take us back to a much simpler time of the American Experience in a way that only he can spin. This stories will make you laugh, cry, and grin all at the same time. This paperback edition is small and fits great into a backpack making it a great traveling companion. Enjoy.....
