5 out of 5 stars A colorful overview of the Okavango.......2005-10-04

Adrian Bailey spent a year in the Okavango Delta of Botswana in order to photograph this remarkably attractive place. The result is a collection of very inviting color photos that do a superb job of capturing the flavor of the flora and fauna of the area. The text of the book tells the story of the formation of the Okavango Delta as well as describing the daily life of many of its inhabitants.

This book is not intended to be a guidebook for those who want to tour the Okavango. For that I recommend Duncan Butchart's "Wildlife of the Okavango: Common Animals and Plants", a pocket-sized guide that does a good job of covering about 99% of what you are likely to see on a short trip to the region. Bailey's book is more for those who either want a visual tour for getting better acquainted with the Okavango Delta or better yet as a souvenir for those who have visited it. The book is of medium-large size and 176 pages in length. There are pictures on every page and the quality of the photographs is first rate.

      Book Description

The very name Kashmir conjures up magical images, from the real garden paradise of Shalimar to Thomas Moore's fantastic descriptions in "Lalla Rookh." Recounting the story of this colorful and fascinating region as it appears in travel writing, literature, and historical works from ancient
times to the present day, Travels in Kashmir offers a lively and comprehensive guide to a land little understood in the West.
Beginning with an informal history of Kashmir--from the legends of the twelfth-century Kalhana to the accounts of British colonial rulers--the book brings together a wide variety of engaging travelers tales, reports, and descriptions that vividly illustrate the changing perceptions of the
area--both Indian and European--throughout the years. Of particular interest is a section on the arts, crafts, and craftspeople of Kashmir, which focuses specifically on the shawl-weaving, carpet-making, and papier mache works that have gained international renown. Throughout, Keenan proves a
sharp as well as sympathetic observer with an eye for the amusing and the poignant, and the entertaining way she unfolds the story of Kashmir's people, places, and crafts makes this a book that will be enjoyed by tourists, readers of travel writing, and anyone interested in one of the most unusual
and beautiful places in the world.

Will they get out of the desert alive?

Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield are trapped in Death Valley! Led astray by the promise of hidden treasure, the Sweet Valley gang is in serious danger. A torrential rainstorm is brewing on the horizon, and they're being pursued by three escaped convicts!

When the gang decides to split up, things only get worse. While Jessica is held at gunpoint by the convicts, Elizabeth hangs from a rocky cliff, perilously close to falling. Will the twins save themselves -- or perish in the valley of death?

Don't miss this electrifying conclusion to the two-part treasure-hunt miniseries.

Elizabeth,Jessica and friends are still trekking through Death Valley. They have made a mistake by choosing to take the gold they found because now their lives are in danger as vicious crooks, who are alot greedier than they are,are on their trail. And Elizabeth is pushed over a cliff!

3 out of 5 stars pretty good but not the best.......2002-11-18

This book was ok. However I want to know why Liz was picked to go on this trip. I mean, its a survival trip and stuff so shouldn't they have just the jocks go on it?? All Liz does is sit around and write articles...but anyways back to the review. Heather is driving Jessica crazy by flirting with Ken. Everyone is arguing and not getting along. Heather twists her ankle or something (I forgot) and so Jessica and Heather have to stay behind and wait for the others to return for them. While Liz and the guys go ahead, they get into yet another argument over which trail to take. So they split up again, with Bruce and Todd (who DO NOT get along) going one way, and Ken and Liz going the other. Ken and Liz are wondering if they still like each other and Todd is VERY jealous. Everyone keeps a diary entry and all 3 guys write about Liz! I started having second thoughts about Heather because in her entry, she wrote that Jessica was prettier than her, she missed her mom and she felt bad for ruining the trip for everyone. Ken wrote all about Liz! haha. I'm too lazy to explain everything soo in a quick summary: Bruce saves Liz's life, they all reunite when 3 bandits try to kill Heather and Jessica, they all finally get along, almost get shot, get lost in a cave that fills with water and miraculously get home safely. It seemed as if they would finally all be friends and get along but in the next book, #117 Jessica the Genius, Jessica is fighting with Bruce and Heather again and the trip isn't even mentioned. Not a very realistic book.

5 out of 5 stars Nightmare in Death Valley, a wicked book!.......2000-04-19

I really loved this book, it's one of the best books i've read.I loved it when they set off, and I admired Elizabeths courage to lead the group through the valley. There were some scary moments, but thankfully they all escaped. I was shocked when one of the escaped convicts decided to turn over a new leaf, and help them escape from the valley.I would recomend this book to someone aged ten.

4 out of 5 stars Nightmare In Death Valley Review.......1999-12-30

Nightmare in Death Valley is probably one of my favourites. Jessica, Elizabeth, Ken, Todd, Bruce and Heather go out together for a survival trip. But it ends up in disaster when the group finds a map and a sack of gold. They immediately go off track to find the gold but are in deep trouble when they start throwing away their food just to make room for the gold. To top off all of that they run into 3 escaped convicts who are also looking for the gold. I think the book was pretty good.

4 out of 5 stars Heather Mallone, being Annoying as usual...........1999-06-15

Heather, Bruce, Ken, Jesisca, Todd and Elizabeth are in Death Valley on a survival coarse. Things start to go wrongs when Heather is paired with Ken, and her flirting drives Jessica insane, but Ken doesn't seem to be bothered. Will Todd and Jess strangle each other? Will Bruce and ELizabeth decide they still like each other? Will theyget out the desert alive?....

The multitrophic level approach to ecology addresses the complexity of food webs much more realistically than the traditional focus on simple systems and interactions. Only in the last twenty years have ecologists become interested in the nature of more complex systems including tritrophic interactions between plants, herbivores, and natural enemies. These interactions are explored in this exciting new volume by expert researchers from a variety of ecological fields. This book provides a much-needed synthesis of multitrophic level interactions and serves as a guide for future research for ecologists of all descriptions.

Only in the last twenty years have ecologists become interested in the nature of more complex systems including tritrophic interactions between plants, herbivores and natural enemies. Plants may directly influence the behaviour of their herbivores' natural enemies, ecological interactions between two species are often indirectly mediated by a third species, landscape structure directly affects local tritrophic interactions and below-ground food webs are vital to above-ground organisms. The relative importance of top-down effects (control by predators) and bottom-up effects (control by resources) must also be determined. These interactions are explored in this exciting new volume by expert researchers from a variety of ecological fields. Marcel Bénabou is quick to acknowledge that his own difficulty in writing has plenty of company. Words stick and syntax is stubborn, meaning slips and synonyms cluster. A blank page taunts and a full one accuses. Bénabou knows the heroic joy of depriving critics of victims, the kindness of sparing publishers decisions, and the public charity of leaving more room in bookstore displays. Why I Have Not Written Any of My Books (Pourquoi je n’ai écrit aucun de mes livres) provides both a respectful litany of writers’ fears and a dismissal of the alibis offered to excuse them.

4 out of 5 stars Arch and poignant metafiction (some will find insufferable).......2001-10-23

This somewhat autobiographical sort of a novel, first published in French in 1986, won the Black Humor Prize. The most interesting part is a sketch of the author's background--as a child of a Sephardic Jewish family that had been in Morocco for four centuries. He assumed he was destined for greatness (as a writer) and sees this as a sort of ontogeny for the phylogeny of the Chosen People. Both as a 20th-century Jew and as someone who (like Camus) feels lost the paradise of living under the North African sun (living in the dingy, gray Paris of the 1950s), he believes he has a duty to remember.

The book about his nonbooks (the books he didn't write) starts over and starts over and starts over, but, aided by some very apposite quotations about writing from myriad other writers, details the ultimately impossible love of an author who can not bring himself to besmirch beautiful virgin sheets of white paper even to create the literature that would redeem his claim to be a writer.

Many people have realized that being unsuited for writing and even unable to string more than a few words together does not remove the desire to be a writer. Without venturing beyond the struggle with writing ) B?nabou makes being a writer who does not and cannot write archly funny and even poignant.

                        2 out of 5 stars a little bit of a let down.......2007-02-26

while this book does have some really interesting parts in it i felt that some of it was either rehash or simply stuff I couldn't care less for (Beckett as a golfer for example). It's sad that all the interviews with Beckett are pre-WWII because I'd really like to hear his thoughts on the trilogy,Godot,so on. Beckett's thoughts on the Joyces are really interesting and the rare photos throughout the book are great as well, many I'm sure can only be found here.I'm actually only half way though this book so these are only my thoughts so far but I'd recommend picking up a Beckett bio before this book (I can recommend the one by Deidre Bair since I've read it).

                        4 out of 5 stars A good book.......2006-11-10

This book is very useful for scholars working on Beckett and also for the more casual reader. I particularly like the Knwolsons' reprinting of some important critical works on Beckett that they feel have been neglected in Beckett studies. I also liked J. M. Coetzee's short piece on Beckett.

                          Book Description

The army of thirty-five thousand that engineered Mexico's independence was a melting pot of insurgent and royalist forces held together by the lure of rapid promotions and other military remuneration.

Overwhelmed with internal threats such as Indian skirmishes and peasant uprisings, this poorly motivated, ill-trained army seldom enjoyed the respite, resources, or direction necessary to overcome challenges to territorial sovereignty posed by Spain, France, Texas, and the United States during Mexico's first three decades of nationhood.

William A. DePalo, Jr., studies the birth and tumultuous adolescence of the Mexican National Army and examines how regional, social, political, and economic factors ate away at its institutional framework and on the Mexican government's attempts at military reform, causing Mexico to eventually lose nearly one-half of its national territory.

"DePalo's research is thorough and impressive."--Military History of the West

"For the Mexican War buff, this is an important book."--Military Images

This is a useful reference for anyone doing research on Mexico's military. It could have used more period illustrations, paintings, lithographs, etc, but it is still worth having in your personal library. The "soldado" is frequently depicted as either an imbecile or a cringing coward, but the facts do NOT bear this out. The defence of the Port of Tampico in 1829 and the Defence of Chapultapec and Churubusco in 1847 all dispell the Hollywood myth. The European connection and the financial woes of the army are explored and, of course, Santa Anna plays a MAJOR roll during the 19th century. If you are a student of military history, go for it !

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read about American politics & journalism!.......2000-12-02

I read this book as a sophomore in college in a required social science course. Well, by the time I finished I had decided to major in American government. This is an extremely well done book! Sabato uses outstanding references that are very credible (think national newscasters) and, at times, funny. He allows you to see how the media can truly affect a political career (for better or for worse). This might also be a good read for folks who're thinking about going into journalism/broadcasting--it'll really make you think about the power you have as a news professional. I can't say enough about _Feeding Frenzy_. After completing four years of school, it's one of the few texts that really made an impact on me.

One of the best exposes of how journalism in the late 20th century has become more concerned with junkyard-dog scandal mongering than dealing with substantive issues. A worthy companion to James Fallows' more recent Breaking the News.

From the supplier: Coverage of the political scandals involving Bill Clinton, Paula Jones and Gennifer Flowers do not conform to the pattern described by Larry Sabato in 'Feeding Frenzy: How Attack Journalism Has Transformed American Politics.' Articles from the New York Times and the Washington Post were analyzed in relation to components discussed by Sabato, such as competitive pressures, pack journalism, the character issue, women in the press corps, and public tolerance of corruption. The credibility of the story's genesis point also plays a role.
