                    5 out of 5 stars Killer.......2006-05-14

This book was so awesome. I have trouble finding books that I actually enjoy reading. This one, is an exeption. It is just so different from all the other books that I have encountered. The way that it is written is just so enjoyable to read. I read this book in 3 days. Not because it was easy...no...no...because I couldn't put the book down! I was even up in the middle of the night JUST to finish it! This is an totally killer book, i highly reccommend it for teens, especially those who don't find reading "fun", because this book'll change your mind!!!

I absolutely love this book. It's funny in a sad sense, and sad in a funny sense...
I want to live my life to the fullest like Ted Burger.

                    3 out of 5 stars Not what I thought!.......2005-04-14

From the title you assume the character is going to die. Ted Burger is somewhat your typical teenager. He plays the guitar likes the group "shakes the clown, and is a bit of a clown himself. On average day he hangs out with his best friend Mark and Mark's girlfriend Nikki. After school they usually hang out at the Circle Eat diner. One day it so happen the cook who worked there and was eventually fired came back and told them he poison the fries and whoever eats them will die of a fast death. Since Ted usually order fries and was starting to feel sick he begins to belive the cook and so he starts telling you how it feels to be dying and knowing you have lest than 24 hours. It took me reading practically midway to realise perhaps he is not going to die.Ted eventually begins having a list that his friend Mark put together of things Ted should do before he dies. In conclusion as said before I started reading it thinking it was going to be sad because of the character death only to find out its a tongue in cheek book about death. In the end I did not really enjoy this book.I felt the author was making a joke about death which I do not see as funny.

                          Book Description

Body mass, or weight, is the most useful descriptive measure of relative body size in birds. Masses are usually reported in avian studies of comparative ecology, physiology, breeding biology, and zoology. In addition, adult body mass is a vital statistic for studies of allometric relationships, growth and development, flight, and biometrics. The data in this handbook was compiled to provide a ready reference source for body masses of most of the world's species of birds. Masses of over 5,800 species are presented, representing about 65% of the known birds. Information for each species includes, when available, the mean, standard deviation, range, sample size, collecting locale and season, and original source. Separate means are presented for males and females in sexually dimorphic species. This handbook should greatly improve the ability of avian researchers to quickly locate body masses for most bird species and incorporate this data into research. Airplane design engineers and airport management professionals can also use these data to calculate the damage done by various species of birds when they hit aircraft. Avid birders, members of birding organizations, and bird banders will also find the book useful for their activities.

Comprehensive and extensive in its scope, the CRC Handbook of Avian Body Masses compiles the most up-to-date information available from a wide range of literature sources (including regional publications) to provide a ready reference on body masses of most of the world's species of birds. This second edition includes an accompanying CD-ROM with a searchable electronic database. This new edition also features more complete coverage of the world's avifauna as well as expanded coverage of birds of South America, Japan, China, Africa, and the Pacific Islands. Leila Abouzeid, whose novel Year of the Elephant has gone through six reprintings, has now translated her childhood memoir into English. Published in Rabat in 1993 to critical acclaim, the work brings to life the interlocking dramas of family ties and political conflict. Against a background of Morocco's struggle for independence from French colonial rule, Abouzeid charts the development of personal relationships, between generations as well as between husbands and wives. Abouzeid's father is a central figure; as a strong advocate of Moroccan nationalism, he was frequently imprisoned by the French and his family forced to flee the capital. Si Hmed was a public hero, but the young daughter's memories of her famous father and of the family's plight because of his political activities are not so idyllic.

These sorts of personal memoirs are not common in Morocco, and as a result they are vitally important. This one is not only useful, but an interesting read as well.

3 out of 5 stars Dense text loses reader.......2002-02-08

There are delightful passages in this memoir and there are interesting details of the Maroccan fight for independence. But there is little of how it felt to grow up in Marocco 50 years ago; and even less description of what the country or the country side was like or looked like.
What this book has in abundance, and it is quite impressive in this respect, is an attempt to transcribe conversations; it shows quite a lot of story-telling in its most intimate manner -- among family members. This repeated story-telling from three different generations reveals how villagers evolve and perpetuate biases or points of view that are then repeated from generation to generation.
But what this book lacks is clarity. I wonder if this was not a problem of translation from the Arabic. The oral stories are told often without a prior reference for the pronouns "her, she, him , or he," making it difficult to understand. Not once, not twice, but many, many times I had to read over and reread again the same story looking for a reference and more often than not ending up, just going on without having a grip on who said what about exactly whom. And it is my belief that, every time a careful reader has to stop and go back to read again and still be left in a state of uncertainty, something is wrong with that text. Because I believe that Ms. Abouzeid is a good writer, I have to blame the translator -- which in this case is unfortunately, Ms. Abouzeid herself. Three stars -- Two taken out for reading difficulty.

                                Book Description

"Friendships, connections, family ties, trust, loyalty, obedience-this was the 'glue' that held us together."These were the principles that the greatest Mafia "Boss if Bosses," Joseph Bonnano, lived by. Born in Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily, Bonnano found his future amid the whiskey-running, riotous streets of Prohibition America in 1924, when he illegally entered the United States to pursue his dreams. By the age of only twenty-six, Bonnano became a Don. He would eventually take over the New York underworld, igniting the "Castellammarese War," one of the bloodiest Family battles ever to hit New York City....Now, in this candid and stunning memoir, Joe Bonanno-likely a model for Don Corleone in the blockbuster movie The Godfather-takes readers inside the world of the real Mafia. He reveals the inner workings of New York's Five Families-Bonanno, Gambino, Profaci, Lucchese, and Genovese-and uncovers how the Mafia not only dominated local businesses, but also influenced national politics. A fascinating glimpse into the world of crime, A Man of Honor is an unforgettable account of one of the most powerful crime figures in America's history.

This was a very good read as I enjoyed the information that this book made available.

2 out of 5 stars A little dull at times and not a complete tell all.......2006-01-07

The book was a decent read but I found Bonanno to be quit repeatative at times. He goes on and on about the Sicilian way of life, and how American's more or less don't understand it. Furthermore he tiptoes around all violence that comes with being in the "Family" as he so eloquently puts it. I found it to be a little dry, not so "tell all", and in the end I find Mr. Bonanno using his Sicilian background and way of life as justification for being in organized crime. Although he himself would never admit that the "Family" he was apart of was organized crime, the crux of the book. He calls himself a "Man of Honor" yet he admitly cheats on his wife and lived a life ingrossed in organized crime, hypocritical to say the least.

4 out of 5 stars Man of Honor provides history.......2005-09-29

Great historical piece although quite biased. Gives the reader good insight into the Sicilian philosophy of life and business. Excellent read if you have an historical interest in the mafia and organized crime.

4 out of 5 stars more to the matter.......2003-10-01

The book is well written and very interesting. But it seems to sugarcoat the "mafiaoso" world. Where are the stories of violence that the "Tradition" is known for? Incidents like cutting off ears and fingers, horseheads in beds, general thievery and intimidation. Is all that just Hollywood embellishment or did Mr. Bonanno perfer to leave the
unsavory side of Mafia life out of his book?

                                4 out of 5 stars Self-serving, yet illuminating..........2003-04-22

Of course, he doesn't tell about the times he had to order that someone be "whacked." But he does go deeper than any other "Mafia memoirs" such as _The Valachi Papers_ ever did.

Or did he? Towards the end, I began wondering if, in his effort to portray himself merely as a misunderstood Sicilian businessman, his book proved that Mario Puzo had done extensive research for _The Godfather_, or if Bonanno had simply used that saga to explain the Mafia's history.

Either way, it's very readable, and very entertaining.

Was it worth it Martin? Hero is no word for a hood turned tout.

Recommended reading would be a book called "Ten men Dead" about real men and real heroes who suffered at the hands of Thatchers Government and the RUC, a far more truthful account of the troubles.

His title of the book "Fifty Dead Men Walking" is an understatement , i truly believe he saved alot more than fifty.

The images Martin McGarland created will stay with me for a very long time. This book is not only an education into the troubles in Ireland it is also a testament to the strength and courage of an amazing man. I would recommend this book to everyone and anyone.

I liked this one! It shows how McGartland, an intelligent soul, was plucked from his lifestyle by British Intelligence to became "Agent Carol", the government's best informant in Ulster for decades.

Russell Crandall's "Driven by Drugs" is an excellent guide to understanding the impact of U.S. policies and the current chaotic situation in Colombia. The author provides background on U.S.-Colombian relations and an overview of Colombian society to help the reader contextualize recent events. While violence in Colombia is rooted in that country's stratified social relations, it is America's "War on Drugs" that now might rip apart what little remains of Colombia's civil society.

Professor Crandall teaches Political Science at Davidson College. Crandall writes in a concise and scholarly manner, and his expertise on the subject matter is readily apparent. The author uses solid research; the numerous footnotes include a number of first-person interviews with knowledgeable sources as well as author translations of Spanish-language sources. The author's arguments are convincing and his conclusions are air-tight as they appear to be based on a rational evaluation of the evidence.

Principally, Crandall argues that Colombian-U.S. relations changed from a mutually-agreeable anti-Communist philosophy to a "narcotized" orientation by the mid 1980s. The narcotized state of affairs, Crandall suggests, is driven by America's multiple addictions; this includes of course the widespread consumption of illicit substances among its population and a congress dependent on defense industry dollars. (To this I might also suggest a peculiarly American need to rationalize its foreign policies in a moralistic manner.)

Perhaps not surprisingly, recent Colombian administrations have had mixed reactions to U.S. policies. Crandall writes that in fact our efforts have only succeeded in undermining Colombia's central government at the same moment when narco-trafficers, paramilitary groups, and guerilla fighters have exploited fear and uncertainty among the populace in order to gain strength. One hopes that Crandall's plea for U.S. policy makers to learn "from past mistakes" and instead implement policies that address Colombia's core socio-economic needs is heeded soon.

With so much of today's news reporting obsessed with other regions of the world, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the decades-long war that America has been waging in Colombia.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A Superb Book.......2002-06-15

Russell Crandall has broken new ground. His dynamic focus on U.S. policy during the Samper Administration (1994-1998) and the Pastrana Administration (1998-2002) provides a powerful insight as to why Colombia is the third largest recipient of U.S. foreign aid in the world after Israel and Egypt. The author also cautions of the many political landmines in the road ahead. Crandall is a tier-one academic and a polished writer.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A straightforward history.......2002-06-05

Driven By Drugs: U.S. Policy Toward Colombia by Russell Crandall (MacArthur Assistant Professor of Political Science, Davidson College) is a straightforward history of American relations vis-a-vis Colombia with particular emphasis on the last decade. An exhaustively researched, scholarly presentation surveying U.S. drug dependency, and its relationship with the roots of violence and guerilla groups in Colombia, as well as the volatile political situation revolving about who owns the land and what is to be done with it, Driven By Drugs is a fascinating, insightful, revealing, and greatly disturbing account of the troubled interaction between these two nations. Driven By Drugs is an important contribution to academic and community library International Studies supplemental reading lists and reference collections.
