Dehydration is bad. Typhoid is bad. And fungal infections are no fun either. But the solution doesn't have to be staying at home behind triple locks. Dirk Schroeder's slim but informative volume sets out the health risks involved in seeing the pyramids, snorkeling off Thailand, and breathing the thin air of the Andes. He tells you the warning signs, preventative as well as curative measures, and when to hightail it out of there to your doctor. Not just a worry-wart's companion, Schroeder's 200-page booklet should make it onto everyone's must-pack list.

Why not always pack it with you for distant places.......2005-05-16
I bought a book back in 1992. Used it for travels to Asia and Afrika. Handy size can always fit your backpack, no matter how light you must pack. I used it for rough trips, as well as for trips around Europe with kids. The book covers all essential aspects that you will need for your travel: (i) which vaccinations to take before you go and what to pack, (ii) what precautions to take to stay fit and healthy, (iii) what to do in case you get sick and (iv) what is the bottom line when you really need to stop being your own doctor and need to find a physician. The book is well structured and you find in a second the topic you are looking for. I strongly recomend the book to travelers who are serious about staying healthy.
The best "carry with you" travel health book out there........2001-11-28
I have travelled and lived all over the world and I always have this book with me. Not only does it cover how to protect yourself, but if you do get sick it helps you to get better. I love that it includes different drugs for you to take for different bugs, and it tells you the exact dosage. This comes in handy when you are living in the bush in Africa, no doctor for hundreds of miles, but a well stocked pharmacy near by. I HIGLY recomend this book or anyone planning to travel or live overseas.
Going to a third world country? This book is for you!.......2000-06-12
I found this book to be very informative. It showed the vaccines that you should get but not only that. It told about the bugs and "creepy crawlies" that you should stay away from in your particular country you are going to. It told of the plants that are poisonous and to stay away from there water unless you have a purifier. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who is goind to a third world country!

In a love story that glows like the many-colored silk skirt that is its symbolic centerpiece, Rita Williams-Garcia takes her place as a major young-adult novelist. This book, with a strong lyrical voice, fulfills the promise the author showed in her widely acclaimed earlier novel, Like Sisters on the Homefront. With simplicity and a masterful control of pacing, Williams-Garcia builds a story that aches with the longing of two young lovers in a dance of tentative approach and defensive retreat, and eventual trust and healing.
Both Thulani and his girlfriend Ysa have an isolating spiritual wound. Ever since his mother suddenly returned to their Jamaican home to die four years ago, Thulani, 16, has withdrawn from the brother and sister-in-law who have raised him and who want to "man him up." Thulani spends long hours on the roof of their brownstone alone with his beloved doves, and school is to him "simply the sitting place." One day he hears a scream and looks over the parapet to see a young woman being raped in the alley below. He rescues her, covers her nakedness, and takes her home, although she fights him every step of the way. Later, fascinated by her proud rejection and grace, he begins to seek her out and follow her in her colorful clothes. "Every time you step out," he tells her, "a rainbow must die." At first she rejects him angrily because he has seen her shamed, but then she shares her name, Ysa, and her fierce ambition to become a textile designer. Little by little they begin to reach out (and then pull back again), to comfort and strengthen each other, and, finally, in a bittersweet ending, "to let go when it was time to let go." (Ages 14 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Ever since he found her battered and raped in the alley near his home, Thulani hasn't been able to think about anything but Ysa. This is the first time since his mother died that he's given a thought to anything but the rock doves he keeps on the roof of his house in Brooklyn. Now that he has seen Ysa, Thulani finally has a reason to come down from the roof. But it's not so easy for him -- especially when it seems that Ysa doesn't want him in her world at all.

Sensitivity Heals.......2007-06-05
Thulani is a high school student living with his older bother and sister-in-law in an apartment in New York City. His mother died several years ago and Thulani, who had been very close to her and has learned all of her secrets for keeping a happy home, has never really recovered from that. Thulani's father never left Jamaica to join them in America, and Thulani only has fleeting memories of him.
Thulani does not enjoy living with his brother and sister-in-law. They don't give him the peace and the space he needs, and they constantly remind him that he is living off of their charity. Even worse, they keep trying to make a man out of him, to turn him into a responsible and hardworking guy with a job and a girlfriend.
The only times Thulani truly feels at peace are the times he spends on his roof. He found some baby birds there and he took care of them and built a home for them. Now as adults they fly the city all day and return to this home at night.
One day from the roof, Thulani sees a girl his age raped in an alley. He takes her home and then can't seem to get her out of his mind. As he pursues her and gets to know her better, Thulani is also able to learn a lot about himself.
I liked how Thulani gave Ysa all of the power in their relationship. He rebuilt her confidence by allowing her to control him, and he didn't seem to mind that. I also liked Thulani's control over his own emotions. He never seemed to get angry, even when it seemed like he should have. I also liked how Thulani's relationship with his sister-in-law developed.
I didn't like how Thulani's brother treated him. He was unnecessarily harsh. I also didn't like that Thulani's father never came to this country. I'd think he would miss his family enough to want to join them.
An Engaging Story of Adolescent Struggles.......2004-08-30
Rita Williams-Garcia's novel, Every Time a Rainbow Dies (HarperTempest, 2001) is an engaging story of adolescent struggles in the midst of difficult situations. It is a story about loss and finding purpose, as well as dealing with violence and overcoming fear. Thulani, a Jamaican teenager living in Brooklyn, is the main character. He has an observant eye and a lyrical voice that portrays even the brutal rape that he witnesses in a perceptive and sensitive way.
Thulani, still grieving the loss of his mother, is engrossed in caring for a flock of doves. They seem a substitute for human relationships. He lives with his brother and pregnant sister-in-law. He sees Ysa, a teenage girl, being raped and he courageously rushes to her aid. His life is changed forever as he becomes increasingly obsessed with Ysa and pursues her until she allows him to be part of her life. He is empowered by her sense of confidence and direction in spite of the rape, and it helps him to begin to heal and make goals of his own.
Every Time A Rainbow Dies.......2003-12-08
Maybe I read this book at the wrong age or at the wrong point in time(with school), but I really did not enjoy the book. Only at times was it written well. Only at times did it give you just enough detail to imagine what is happening. The book is an easy read and sure you can read it, dont let me hold you back, but there are so many better books on the same topic out there. Dont be mistaken that Rita Williams-Garcia is a bad author from this book, but its not one of her best works. Thulani, the main character, just isnt a normal guy. The book can give you wrong impressions about him, but really I think that one of his pigeons poked his head one too many times. And Ysa with her drawbaks.....it gets to be stupid. But dont let this stop you from reading it, just advice that its not that great of a book.
Don't judge this book by its cover.......2002-06-08
This is a beautifully written book about two teenagers going through some tough times. 16-year-old Thulani lost his mother 3 years ago without even being able to say goodbye. Since then, he has lived in the grudging hospitality of his brother and sister-in-law, who want to "man him up" and have him conform to their ideas of what he should be doing in his life. He spends most of his time tending his pigeons on the roof of the Brooklyn brownstone where he lives. The pigeons are his only interest in life . . . until one day, he hears a scream. Down on the street, a girl is being brutally raped. He yells at the rapists to stop and runs to help the girl (You like him already at this point). He takes her home, but finds that he is obsessed with the girl, whose name is Ysa.
I just loved this book. It wasn't the type of book where you are turning pages quickly, waiting to see how it will end. Rather, Williams Garcia's poetic writing and fully-realized characters give you the feeling of people you know. You just want to move in and stay there a long time.
Every Time A Rainbow Dies.......2002-05-13
Every Time A Rainbow Dies is about a young boy who isn't really interested in school as much as he's interested in a girl named Ysa. This boy's name is Thulani. One day while he was letting his birds out he heard a girl scream. She was being raped in the alley below him. He panicked and didn't know what to do, so he went down there and scared them away. He took her back to her home and was nearly beat down by her aunt. He thought about her constantly, and tried to find out if she went to his school or a different school. He finally found out where she went and met up with her. He would take the bus with her to her school, but she didn't want to become and "item" with him. They got together finally, and she got accepted to college for the arts.
I like the book because it showed how far someone would go for love. Thulani always knew he would get the girl, so he never gave up. That requires a great deal of determintion and strive. Even though she was hesitant at first, he got her and he knew they were perfect for each other. I also liked the book because it was very realistic. It wasn't just a fantasy.
My favorite part of the book was when Thulani was talking to Ysa and they saw the rapist's mother. That was shoking how Ysa just burst out into emotions and broke down. That was also the time when Ysa and Thulani got together. Since Thulani stuck up for her and was there for her, she knew he could be trusting and responsible. I liked this part because it starts off as a bad situation, but ends up like a fairy tale.

Book Description
During the last two decades the boundary element method has experienced a remarkable evolution. Contemporary concepts and techniques leading to the advancements of capabilities and understanding of the mathematical and computational aspects of the method in mechanics are presented. The special emphasis on theoretical and numerical issues, as well as new formulations and approaches for special and important fields of solid and fluid mechanics are considered. Several important and new mathematical aspects are presented: singularity and hypersingular formulations, regularity, errors and error estimators, adaptive methods, Galerkin formulations, coupling of BEM-FEM and non-deterministic (stochastic and fuzzy) BEM formulations. Novel developments and applications of the boundary element method in various fields of mechanics of solids and fluids are considered: heat conduction, diffusion and radiation, non-linear problems, dynamics and time-depending problems, fracture mechanics, thermoelasticity and poroelasticity, aerodynamics and acoustics, contact problems, biomechanics, optimization and sensitivity analysis problems, ill posed and inverse problems, and identification problems.

Customer Reviews:
Masterpiece.......2007-07-11
This book by Richter which won the National Book Award in 1961 remains for me THE masterpiece of modern American literature.
Elegaic in its scope, Richter in Waters of Kronos captures the nostalgic malaise of the dwindling Eisenhower years as the American Spirit fails to come to terms with the realization that our rural Americanness of closely knit families, hidden local secrets, and apple pie abundance had been forfeited under the swelling waters of Modern Time -- those backed-up waters created by the dams of the Tennessee valley and the creation of the interstate highway system. In raising this awareness in the novella-like dreams of a man affected by the stroke of insight, Richter juxaposes the era of headless horsemen and settling pilgrims with the impersonal modern existentialism that arbitrarily guards the cemetaries of our memories.
If there is any book of American literature that should be mandatory reading, this is the one.
A lost classic.......2007-05-03
The Waters of Kronos is a haunting novel about memory, loss, nostalgia, and the pitfalls of hope. The very premise, so promisingly delivered, bears fruit in unexpected ways: John Donner imagines that his inner unease is from the distance between him and his long dead father. In his feverish imagination he sees his father menacingly approaching his sick bed, but then realizes he was wrong. His father was not the subject of his life long fear: it was existence itself. The very physical fact of living, with its accumulated disappointments and losses, its fears and anxieties, is the real source of anxiety. And it is inescapable: neither a retreat into fantasy nor a recreation of the past into art can alleviate it. In the end, this masterfully written novella comes to grips with this unsettling fact: people must live with life as it is given.
The Waters of Kronos.......2005-08-21
In this haunting, often beautiful novel, Conrad Richter writes of the journey of John Donner, who goes back to the town where he was born, hoping to find the meaning of a deep malaise. If he can only return to the past, he feels he might be free. But the quest seems futile. The town he seeks lies at the bottom of a great modern dam made by the River Kronos.
How he is drawn back through the waters of Kronos, Time, into the past forms the narrative of John Donner's classic journey. He finds himself in his own clear, light-filled world of youth at a moment of double crisis in the lives of his richly varied family, the Donners, Morgans, and Scarletts. But they are still young. John Donner is an old man. When he tries to re-enter the old intimate family relationships, he is rejected as a stranger, even by the boy-he-was as they stand face to face. Only his mother, from whom he holds himself until the last, cannot fail him, he thinks. Surely she will know him and receive him into the old heretofore never failing love.
Much better than I expected!!.......1999-05-21
I am currently reading, as I get to them, the winners of the National Book Award which I haven't yet read. This book won the 1961 award and I found it an eerily moving book, which really caught me up after I read for a bit. It tells of John Donner revisiting his boyhood home, and while fantastic it has none of the things I so often find irritatin in "fantasy" books. I was powerfully affected by this great simple story.

Product Description
From the time of its first publication in 1960, Conrad Richter's The Waters of Kronos sparked lively debate about the extent to which its story of a belated return to childhood scenes mirrored key events of Richter's own life. As was well known at the time, Richter had spent several years in the Southwest, where he collected the material for his first successful book, Early Americans and Other Stories, but by 1933, he had returned to live in his hometown, Pine Grove, Pennsylvania. John Donner, the main protagonist in "The Waters of Kronos", traces a similar route from west to east, although he finds that his family home and native town have been submerged under the deep waters of a lake formed by the construction of a hydroelectric dam. As Richter narrates his alter ego's efforts to salvage his past, he moves beyond "semi-autobiography" to offer what are widely recognized as his most haunting reflections upon the power of family history, the fragility of human memory, and art's role in structuring the communal ethos.
