Outstanding.......2006-01-31
I looked at several options for a regression textbook that would be both understandable and relatively complete for my introduction to the topic. This book won hands down. The authors keep it simple and use a wide variety of examples to get the point across. I felt that the sections on logistic and Cox regression could have been a bit better, but these subjects are best learned by dedicated textbooks such as Hosmer and Lemeshow and Collett.
I think that this may be the best introductory regression book out there.
The best second book of statistics for biologists........2000-11-13
Once you've learned the basic principles of statistics, how can a biologist learn more advanced techniques? Many books focus on math rather than on understanding concepts. Other books are too narrow -- discussing only a single method. And books that focus on multiple regression and ANOVA tend to have examples from psychology and social sciences. Glantz and Slinker do a great job of explaining the principles of multiple regression, analysis of variance, and analysis of covariance. The focus is not on mathematical proofs, but rather on making sense of the results in the context of biological and medical research.
This book also has excellent chapters on linear regression, nonlinear regression (curve fitting) and logistic and proportional hazards regression (regression when the outcome is an either-or binary variable).
New to the second edition are a chapter on analysis of covariance, more extensive discussions of multiple comparisons methods, and a discussion of Cox proportional hazards regression for analyses of survival data.
The title is a bit misleading. This is not a "primer" of statistics. But once you've learned the basic principles of statistics, this is THE book for biologists to learn about various kinds of ANOVAS and regressions.
The best advanced statistics book for biologists.......1998-05-30
Like all advanced stats books, this one has mathematical rigor and plenty of examples. But unlike the others, this one is written from the point of view of a biologist. You won't just learn the math, you'll learn how to make sense of the results. The title is a bit misleading. This is not a "primer" of statistics. But once you've learned the basic principles of statistics, this is THE book to learn about various kinds of ANOVAS and regressions.

A Distinctive Debut.......2006-06-14
As I read this odd first volume in a projected ten-book series, there was a vague sense of familiarity I couldn't quite identify. The title is clearly an allusion to the real-life "lost colony" of Roanoke Island (circa 1650), and the book itself appears to be set in an isolated village about two centuries later -- a quasi-1850ish America. But there was something about the bright colors, setting, and cast of characters that rang some little bell in the back of my head. Finally, after reading an interview with the author, it all made sense -- I had grown up reading the Asterix series, and so had he. The isolated village, strange characters, and vivid coloring all find their influences in the Asterix series.
With that out of the way, it has to be said that the storyline is a little disorienting. A stranger arrives in town, having crossed over on the small ferry which links the island village to the mainland. His task is apparently to advertise (via posters) an impending slave auction in the nearby city of Port Succor. The young daughter of the town's banker, Birdy Snodgrass, is keen to buy a slave to take over her household chores. Her father, meanwhile, waxes on about various vague financial "shenanigans" whose relevance to the plot is rather unclear. However, the town's Chinese-Mexican pharmacist/alchemist, Dr. Pepe Wong, is keen to erase the stranger's mind so that the village's existence remains unknown. Unfortunately, he entrusts this task to his huge Frankenstein-like helper, a strongman who has a talent for messing up simple tasks (these two characters are reminiscent of Getafix and Obelix from the Asterix series). Eventually Birdy makes it to Port Succor and has various adventures, culminating in her acquisition of a storytelling slave boy. Meanwhile, Dr. Wong brews up various tinctures and potions in order to try and guide events. Meanwhile, the village's few free black people and Indians band together to chase off the invasion of slave-catchers they believe is impending. And then there's Rex Carter, the local plantation owner, whose invented some kind of clockwork robot so that he "can be free of his slaves." All of this culminates in a kind of zany pitched battle which more or less restores the balance.
The artwork is very striking and distinctive. Klein creates his work in Photoshop, which leads to beautifully crisp lines and a highly controlled palate. His style is to build layers of color against which his dense black lines pop. It's very pop-arty and a lot of fun to examine. The paneling is strictly rectangular, but has enough variation in sizing and placement from spread to spread to give it a lively feel. Klein's dialogue freely mixes period with contemporary language, which makes what might have been a stiff semi-historical tale much more accessible. There is a clear running theme concerning slavery and race, as well as less explicit treatments of capitalism, technology, and the development of America. It's not particularly clear what Klein means by it all, but it's certainly interesting and distinctive enough for me to look forward to the next installment.
This Series Has Potential.......2006-05-23
The Lost Colony by Grady Klein is a promising new graphic novel series. Book 1: The Snodgrass Conspiracy introduces us to vibrant and varied characters. When a stranger in green pants arrives in an insulated community and threatens the island's values, the inhabitants leap into action, each with their own plans and motivations. The artist's style -- both his drawings and his storytelling -- is simultaneously bold and innocent. Fans of steampunk, Jeff Smith's graphic novel series Bone, or the animated feature film Princess Mononoke should definitely give The Lost Colony a try.

Book Description
Hormones strongly influence and even "drive" certain primitive behaviors. In Central Neural States Relating Sex and Pain, Richard J. Bodnar, Kathryn Commons, and Donald W. Pfaff examine hormonal, neural, and genetic mechanisms of reproductive, pain-sensing, and pain-inhibitory systems. The authors show that there are remarkable neuroanatomical, biochemical, and functional overlaps among these systems. They consider sensory inputs triggering both classes of behaviors and focus on the role of sex hormones in modulating both forms of behavior. Sex hormones acting in different regions of the brain not only energize reproductive behaviors but also modulate opioid-dependent pain-inhibitory pathways. The authors also summarize some intriguing gender differences in hormone actions and responsivity to pain.
The clinical implications of this field of research are numerous. Central Neural States Relating Sex and Pain will appeal to anyone interested in new ways of looking at behavioral dispositions as they are influenced by specific genetic, neural, and hormonal states.

Book Description
This research monograph presents the fundamentals of fuzzy control theory and recent results in extending fuzzy control theory for multivariable and large scale systems.
Among the topics presented are: the problem of dimensional reduction of fuzzy relations; the possibilities for decomposing multivariable systems for the purpose of distributed fuzzy control; a method of two-level hierarchical fuzzy control, based on local and global control components; methods of decentralized fuzzy control by different types of spatial decomposition of the original system into subsystems, and, analogously, methods of multilayer fuzzy control on the basis of several types of temporal decomposition of the original system into layers.
The theoretical results are illustrated by numerical examples and two case studies. It is shown that the number of fuzzy relations, respectively on-line computations, can be significantly reduced and in this way real time control implementation can be facilitated.
The book is written using a structured method-algorithm-example format, and offers solutions to existing problems, as well as pointing a way to further investigations.
Audience: This volume will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in the field of applied mathematics, industrial engineering and informatics.

Drawing on the very best of recent scholarship, the History contributes a wide range of new and exciting insights and offers a new interpretation of what it means to be "Scottish."
These anthologies contribute a wide range of new and exciting insights. The first volume begins with the first full-scale critical consideration of Scotland's earliest literature, drawn from the diverse cultures and languages of its early peoples. It covers the literature produced during the medieval and early modern period in Scotland, surveying the riches of Scottish work in Gaelic, Welsh, Old Norse, Old English, and Old French, as well as in Latin and Scots. The second volume deals with a period in which Scotland underwent some of the most dramatic upheavals in its history. It reveals how Scottish writers in shaping the modernity of Britain, Europe and the world. The third volume explores Scottish literature in all its forms and languages since the end of the World War I, bringing together the best contemporary critical insights from three continents.

Book Description
Not Even My Name is the unforgettable story of Sano Halo's survival of the death march at age ten that annihilated her family-as told to her daughter, Thea-and the poignant mother-daughter pilgrimage to Turkey in search of Sano's home seventy years after her exile. AUTHORBIO: Thea Halo, shown here with her mother, Sano, at age eighty-nine, is a writer and painter who has won awards for her poetry and essays, and has exhibited her paintings in galleries in New York City and elsewhere. She lives in New York City.Sano Halo is a recipient of New York State's Governor's Award for Excellence in honor of Women's History Month, "Celebrating Women of Courage and Vision."
Customer Reviews:
Poignant memoir.......2006-09-26
This poignant memoir written in such astonishing detail is an unforgettable story that will capture the reader from the start. Sano is like a small but sturdy flower growing in the most unlikely and least advantageous of garden spots. In her we see goodness and love survive heart rending loss and the cruel displacement of senseless war. I could not put the book down once I began to read it.
A tragic story written beautifully.......2006-05-28
This is not a book to read if you want to be cheered up, yet I will never forget the story. I wept off and on reading of the author's mother's experience on the death march. I have traveled to Greece and Turkey twice yet had no knowledge of the genocide of the Pontic Greeks. I thank the author for the courage to live through her mother's amazing journey as she told her unforgettable story.
Wonderful Book Thea!.......2005-10-22
I am also of Pontic Greek and Assyrian origin. Even though our lands were taken away, our people still exist, we still maintain our language, and the gospel is still spreading which is a blessing. I am glad to see someone wrote a book on the Greek/Assyrian/Armenian Genocide. The Turks tortured and massacred millions of Greeks, Assyrians and Armenians. I am happy to see you raise more public awareness about this. I pray for the Greeks, Assyrians and Armenians still living in Asia Minor that deal with constant persecution for their Christian faith. Great Book Thea!
A Message of Appreciation From John Halo.......2005-10-22
I am John Halo the brother of Thea Halo. I am very proud of my sister for writing such a wonderful book, NOT EVEN MY NAME, that depicts such an accurate account of my mothers life, that discribeds the pain that my wonderful mother endured in her childhood and throughout her life. Thea Halo is a champion and a woman with a beautiful hart and a loving sole that deserves the recognition of a grate author, and I hope someone will relize the value of this true story and make a movie and documentary so to educate our generation and future generation from repeating this horror. I would also like to let everyone know that my mother was so grateful and proud that Thea wrote this book and is also grateful to all of the wonderful people that came to see her speak. And last I would like to say how proud and thankful I am of my sister Thea Halo for being my sister.
Sincerely
John Halo
Important part of history.......2005-07-08
The subject is of great interest and great importance to the present situation in the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. It is well written and quite engaging. As it is a book I want to keep permanently in my library, I only wish it were printed on higher quality paper.

Book Description
The latest addition to the Red Star series addresses the formation and early years of OKB-301, the design bureau created by Semyon shortly before the outbreak of the Great Pacific War. This book describes in detail all the piston-engined fighters developed by OKB-301 starting with the LaGG-3, an aircraft that first saw service in the Winter War against Finland. The story continues with the legendary La-5 and La-7 which rendered sterling service during the war. For Soviet airmen these aircraft were what the Spitfire was to the RAF and the P-51 Mustang was to the Americans. They were a match for the Messerschmitt Bf109 and the Focke Wulf Fw190, and several pilots were awarded the decoration Hero of the Soviet Union for their exploits in these aircraft. The concluding chapters deal with the last of the line, the La-9 and the La-11, which saw combat in China and Korea in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Illustrated with numerous rare and previously unpublished photos drawn from Russian military archives, the book's color content will delight the aviation modeler and anyone interested in Soviet aviation in the World War II era. The colorful nose art, which many aircraft sported, is recorded as are Lavochkin fighters in the liveries of allies of the Soviet Union and captured aircraft in the colors of the enemies of the Soviets.
Book Description
Today over forty million Latin Americans classify themselves as Protestant, of which the overwhelming majority belong to some form of Pentecostalism. The rapid dissemination of Pentecostal beliefs has produced vibrant alternatives to traditional dominant culture and changed relations within the family, locality, and workplace. This volume introduces broad issues in the Pentecostal movement, including gender relations, political power and organization, and inter-Pentecostal and ecumenical relations. These themes are then examined more specifically in the country case studies, which address the historical foundations of the Pentecostal movement, patterns of and explanation for its growth, and the consequences of its expanding presence, including increased political influence.

Book Description
Deforestation, soil runoff, salination, pollution. While recurrent themes of the contemporary world, they are not new to us. In this broad sweeping review of the environmental impacts of human settlement and development worldwide over the past 5,000 years, Sing C. Chew shows that these processes are as old as civilization itself. With examples ranging from Ancient Mesopotamia to Malaya, Mycenaean Greece to Ming China, Chew shows that the processes of population growth, intensive resource accumulation, and urbanization in ancient and modern societies almost universally bring on ecological disaster, which often contributes to the decline and fall of that society. He then turns his eye to the development of the modern European world-system and its impact on the environment. Challenging us to change these long-term trends, Chew also traces the existence of environmental conservation ideas and movements over the span of 5,000 years. Can we do it? Look at Chew's evidence of the past five millennia and decide. Ideal for courses in environmental history, anthropology, and sociology, and world-systems theory.
Customer Reviews:
World Ecological Degradation: Accumulation, Urbanization, and Deforestration 3000 B.C. - A.D. 2000.......2006-08-10
Using world systems theory as his springboard, Sing Chew develops a social history of the rise and fall of civilizations from the Bronze Age to the emergence of Europe as the center of the world economic system in the eighteenth century.
Chew's thesis is that cultures interact with nature and this interaction is transformative both for culture and nature.
While many social historians dwell on the lives of famous leaders of different societies, Chew demonstrates how social processes of accumulation accelerate destruction of nature and thus decline of civilizations based on resources derived from nature. He uses deforestation as an example of use of natural resources at a rate that is not sustainable.
World Ecological Degradation is a book based on excellent scholarhip. This book is particularly relevant to readers who want historical perspective on patterns of consumption that have lead to the current ecological crisis.
Underresearched and overreaching........2003-12-10
One does not need to write a book about the weather when he can simply stick his head out the window.
Although this work compiles some useful data and facts, it does little to answer the most important questions concerning societal collapse. It is not enough to say that rising populations and urban settlements tax the environment, this is obvious; the question is why do populations rise in the first place and why do these populations organize themselves in highly stratified systems with specialized economies necessitating great amounts of food surpluses and specialist produced craft goods?
Moreover, this work attempts to tackle a subject that anthropological archaeologists have been working on diligently for decades without referring to much of their work. For instance Flannery, 1972 isn't even in the bibliography and Culbert's synthesis of the vast amount of Mayan archaeology completed in the 1970's to get at these very ecological questions isn't either.
