There is much more to the Charles River than perspiring college kids sculling to the insistent chant of the coxswain. Michael Tougias has been loving and exploring the Charles, all 80 miles of it, for 20 years now, finding secluded towns, coves, marshes, and woodlands of remarkable beauty, and his book is a real gift to the people who live near enough the banks of the Charles to take advantage of Tougias' vast river experience. Touching on its geography, history, and wildlife, Tougias provides a very practical recreation guide to 11 wilderness reservations along the Charles. Each chapter contains convenient, accurate maps and directions; routes for canoes, kayaks, and bicycles; resources for paddlers, hikers, anglers, and picnickers; and accounts of the river and its history from Native American settlements through Revolutionary War days up to modern times. Boston's summers can be hot and intense, but there are lush, bucolic, remote oases that are easily accessible if only you know where to go.

      Book Description

Explore the Charles and its shores by canoe or kayak, on foot, or on bike and learn some natural and cultural history along the way.

      4 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Guide.......2006-03-09

When I lived in Boston, I was always looking for places to canoe. I mainly steered toward lakes and the like, trying to get far from the city. That is, until I found this book.

Exploring the Hidden Charles opened a backdoor on eastern Massachusetts, allowing me to see parts of metro Boston rarely seen by anyone. There I was, thinking I had to escape the city by driving miles away, when right down the street from where I lived, close to town and near the train tracks was a pathway to a secret world.

Before we moved, I was only able to take several of the trips outlined in the book. I was not disappointed. The book goes farther than simply suggesting a couple places for putting in. Each chapter told a story that I was able to relive as I paddled my way down the river, looking for landmarks from the text. I expecially appreciated the historical background to different sections of the river.

      3 out of 5 stars Needs Work.......2006-10-21

The beginning of the book moved too quickly at times (which made the book unrealistic) and some things were unclear.

However from the middle of the book on, it became suprisingly profound. If the beginning of the book had been better it would have desearved 4 or 5 stars.

Having an eating disorder myself I was able to identify and be somewhat inspired by the main character. Overall I was to some degree disapointed (especially that the quality of the book didn't match the price when it cost $14.15), but enjoyed reading The Echo Glass.

      5 out of 5 stars Realistic approach.......2006-04-19

I am not a teenager but as I have an interest in anorexia I decided to read this book.

It follows three years of Jasmine's life (as EDd people know, an ED does not come and go in a short period of time). She faces emotional bullying and as a result struggles to deal with life. She then falls into the trap of anorexia without really realising or understanding it.

There are some stunning scenes that had me at the edge of my seat unable to put the book down. It becomes apparent at the end of the novel what `the echo glass' actually stands for (there are various suggestions throughout which makes you think you've worked it out earlier but the real meaning comes later). Once Jasmine understands what the Echo Glass is the way is made clear for a possible step towards recovery. I felt that this was very important. The book realistically deals with an eating disorder and as a result does not have the cliched `happy ending,' (as many are aware these certainly don't occur over night!) The hint of optimism and a possible way forward are apparent but we are never sure if Jasmine takes this route or not (though the ending is far from depressing as we feel Jasmine has a new understanding). What we do know is that she has learnt what it is inside her and that she has the support of true friends.

I feel that this is a very important book and the imagery gives real depth. It is not only realistic in its dealings with eating disorders and bullying but it gives insight into the way that EDd people think. It also dealt with therapy in an interesting and thought-provoking way.

All in all I would recommend this book.

        Book Description

The unique contribution made by biological anthropology to human welfare lies in the fundamental understanding it can provide of the dynamic interrelationships between physical and social factors. By understanding these patterns, we can interpret the significance of variation in such measures of human well-being in terms of the incidence of disease and mortality rates. Topics covered in this book include reproductive ecology and fertility, nutritional status in relation to health, and the effects of pollution on individual growth. In later chapters, the concepts of physiological adaptation and Darwinian fitness and their relation to individual physical fitness are explored.

                    Product Description

Part novel and part autobiography, The Great Fire of London is one of the great literary undertakings of the last fifty years. At various times exasperating, daunting, moving, dazzling, and challenging, it has its origins in Jacques Roubaud's attempt to come to terms with the death of his young wife Alix, whose presence both haunts and gives meaning to every page. Having failed to write his intended novel ("The Great Fire of London"), instead he creates a book that is about that failure, but in the process opens up the world of the creative process, which is at once an attempt to bring order to his ravaged personal life and to construct an intricate literary project that functions according to strict rules, one of them being the palindrome. But rather than a confessional novel about himself and his wife, Roubaud follows in the tradition of the troubadours, where the objects of grief and love are identified obliquely and through literary artifice. At all times, Alix and his anguished loss of her are paramount, but usually couched or disguised by the writer's obsessive need to filter that anguish through reflections of the art of writing.

The Great Fire of London consists of a main text ("story") and two sets of digressions ("interpolations" and "bifurcations"). Although best to read the insertions as they appear (indicated in the main text with cross-reference markers), this is an "interactive" text in which readers can decide for themselves how they wish to proceed. Roubaud's novel stands as a lyrical counterpart of those great postmodern masterpieces by fellow Oulipians Georges Perec (Life: A User's Manual) and Italo Calvino (If on a Winter's Night a Traveler).

                      Book Description

Family Secrets and the Psychoanalysis of Narrative is the first book to explore the implications of the psychoanalytic theory of the phantom for the study of narrative literature. A phantom is formed when a shameful, unspeakable secret is unwittingly transmitted, through cryptic language and behavior, transgenerationally from one family member to another. The "haunted" individual to whom the "encrypted" secret is communicated becomes the unwitting medium for someone else's voice--and the result is speech and conduct that appear incongruous or obsessive in a variety of ways. Through close readings of texts by Conrad, Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Balzac, James, and Poe, Esther Rashkin reveals how shameful secrets, concealed within the unspoken family histories of fictive characters, can be reconstructed from their linguistic traces and can be shown not only to drive the characters' speech and behavior but also to generate their narratives. First articulated by the French psychoanalysts Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok, the theory of the phantom here represents a radical departure from Freudian, Lacanian, and other psychoanalytic approaches to literary interpretation. In Rashkin's hands, it also provides a response to structuralist and poststructuralist critiques of character analysis, an alternative to deconstructive strategies of reading, and a new vantage point from which to consider problems of intertextuality, "authorship," and the formation and origins of narrative.

I think that Candide, by Voltaire is a must-read. It mocks the traditonal views of optimism and takes on a almost, humorous approach to telling that story. It also teaches a lesson of contentment and it shows how Candide experienced the contentment of El Dorado and the sybolism of El Dorado to God's kingdom.

                        Book Description

Focusing on the social discourses in Anthony Trollope's Barchester Towers and Edmond and Jules de Goncourt's Rene Mauperin, particularly the dialogic exchanges of the drawing-room, this study offers significant insights into the usefulness of Bakhtinian theory. It reveals how the various levels of discourse operate in the texts and, consequently, how they relate to their social contexts determined by well-defined gender demarcations within the bourgeois ideological paradigm. The drawing-room of the nineteenth century provides a lively forum for society to voice its ideals and expectations. This study examines those ideals and their limitations, the social discourses of the texts as they operate in the chronotope of the drawing-room, and the extent to which these narratives undermine social expectations.

                          Book Description

This book argues against the tendency of much of literary studies today to mistake the critique of formalism for a license to disregard form altogether. In detailed readings of ten novels (by Balzac, Stendhal, Austen, Dickens, and James), the author shows how novelists, in their practice of novelistic representation, deal with certain cultural issues, social values, and ideological purposes through the particular combination and manipulation of a set of formal possibilities.

The analysis of each novel centers around the notion of transformation—or the “economy of change”—as it informs the text and our understanding of it, arguing that transformation is not only a basic category of narrative structure but also the key to the link between literary form and cultural context. The readings foreground the different ways transformation operates in narrative texts: as a category of plot, as what underlies the production of meaning or knowledge in the text, and as what constitutes the text as representation. The discussion of each novel begins by reviewing certain dominant interpretations and then proceeds to offer alternative readings, challenging the logic that underlies those interpretations and complicating common ways of categorizing novels.
