Customer Reviews:
A MUST HAVE!!! for any aviary library.......2004-05-12
This is one the best books that I have in my possession. It provides anyone with excellent visual pictures of the actual birds and provides general information for each. The information is fairly good but limited to a single page for each bird, but is fairly comprehensive in regard to each species and sub-species. I highly recommend this book.
Great reference to identify common & less known pet birds.......1999-08-23
Covers history of aviculture, caging, taming, & breeding including setting up mixed species aviaries.Tells country of origin, habitat, foods, whether they will sing/talk or both. Also covers how they do in captivity with children and other pets.Very informative for the person trying to decide what pet they want or whether they want to set upbreeding colonies. Something for everyone!

Customer Reviews:
Fun Egyptian Adventure.......2006-08-14
January James is leaving Seattle and going to Egypt on a dig for the summer. Once she gets there, however, things go a little differently than she imagined. First, she falls in love with a guy who's allegedly cursed. Then Chloe, a prissy, lip gloss-obsessed brat, tries to steal him from her. The Jan finds out that a bracelet she bought at a market is a stolen, cursed artifact. She has to find a way to get rid of it, without getting arrested. Jan's narration is funny and poignant, and I really enjoyed this book. You can read Chloe's side of the story in Chloe, Queen of Denial by Naomi Nash.
Cute...but thats about it. .......2006-08-02
This is the first book I've read of Katie Maxwell's, and at first, I thought I was missing something really special. The opening scene pops, and I love the main character right away... but then throughout the book I feel like it starts to unravel, and by the end i was disintersted.
Three stars.
cute love story, badly written "hip" language.......2005-06-30
at the persistent request of my friend, i dutifully followed her orders and read Eyeliner of the Gods. It was a quick, funny, and interesting read. The only thing that really annoyed me and made reading the book a torture was Maxwell's constant use of vernacular, idiomatic, "hip" language. "Pooh, dawg, etc" were just not my taste. It was a desperate and unsuccessful attempt to sound like a teenager, but otherwise the book was decently written.
if all you want is a summary, then here it is. January James is a teenage girl (who's full of either overused cliched phrases or never heard before idioms) who goes to Egypt on a school field trip. She's faced with troubles as she's forced to be with a snobby girl named Chloe and a strict chaperone. Though, luckily she meets a boy named Seth, but then finds out everybody thinks he's the reincarnated Eygptian god Set. What will happen next? dun, dun, dun.
Laugh-out Romance.......2005-06-12
January James thinks herself as bland compared to the rest of her artistic family. She wants to be a journalist and travels to Egypt looking for a good story. She's never had it good with guys because they tend to focus on her boobs instead of Jan herself When her trip in Egypt begins, she meets a mysterious hottie named Seth, who tells her he's the reincarnation of Set, the Lord of Chaos. January ends up with a cursed bracelet and she tries to find the thief who stole it from the tomb. She soon engages herself into a huge crush over Seth but then has several doubts as she finds him kissing a lip-gloss obsessed girl named Chloe and a perfect goody-two-shoes named Izuma. This book has some HILARIOUS scenes and you'll just laugh yourself to tears.
Cute, thumbs up to Katie Maxwell.......2005-03-03
I really like Katie Maxwell's books, but EYELINER OF THE GODS was a bit disappointing. It was cute, but I had a lot of trouble getting interested in the story at first. After I got through the first 30 pages or so, I thought it was a cute and original story.
EYELINER OF THE GODS is about Jan James, who is a wanna-be tabloid reporter. She gets offered a chance to go on an archaeological dig in Egypt, and she accepts. Her trip doesn't start out too well - she gets lost, mugged, and cheated out of some money. But after she meets - and falls for - Seth, things start looking up. Until Jan learns that an ancient curse is putting a damper on her plans, and she could be in danger.
EYELINER OF THE GODS is cute, it's a comedy/romance that also has a bit of a mystery to it. Jan is a very likeable character, but the book was kind of slow in certain parts. I enjoyed it, but was glad I had only picked it up from the library.

Book Description
The weak or non-conventional hydrogen bond has been subject of intense scrutiny over recent years in several fields, in particular in structural chemistry, structural biology, and also in the pharmaceutical sciences. There is today a large body of experimental and theoretical evidence confirming that hydrogen bonds like C-H...O, N-H...pi, C-H...pi and even bonds like O-H...metal play distinctive roles in molecular recognition, guiding molecular association, and in determining molecular and supramolecular architectures. The relevant compound classes include organometallic complexes, organic and bio-organic systems, and also DNA and proteins. The book provides a comprehensive assessment of this interaction type, and is of interest to all those interested in structural and supramolecular science, including fields as crystal engineering and drug design.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful book..........2006-07-26
Chemistry is all about interactions, and chemists have traditionally classified interactions into various categories such as covalent and ionic, hydrogen bonding and Van der Waals. But this classification is primarily for convenience, and there are many borderline cases which any chemist should be aware of, if he wants to notice interesting phenomena.
One such borderline interaction that is very important in maintaining the structure of crystals is the weak hydrogen bond. Crystallographers are in a unique position to observe and catalog such an interaction, because they are constantly looking at structures frozen in time in the solid state. These are also structures that represent the dazzling chemical diversity inherent in nature. In this book, the authors, both of whom are leading authorities in the field, provide a comprehensive and extremely readable overview of this unique interaction, which should challenge the traditional wisdom of any chemist, and should allow him or her to greatly expand his or her horizons in the world of molecular interactions.
The book starts with a lucid and excellent introduction to what are usually described as 'normal' and 'strong' hydrogen bonds. The authors then gracefully demonstrate in the rest of the book by virtue of countless examples of organic, organometallic, and biological structures, how the strong and all important traditional picture of a hydrogen bond smoothly transitions to the domain of the weak hydrogen bond. Many of the rules that chemists usually apply to the notion of the hydrogen bond need to be modified and challenged, and excursions into weak hydrogen bonds actually exemplify the whole paradigm of weak intermolecular interactions. The authors explore all the evidence for such weak interactions including statistical, energetic, and spectroscopic. The crystal structures included reinforce the astonishing variety of molecular structures around us, both artificial as well as natural. There is also great simplicity in some of these structures, which makes them and the interactions in them truly beautiful to comprehend, in terms of their stability and symmetry. The discussion in every chapter is lucid, to the point, and shows the authors' own appreciation of their subject and its ramifications.
Their discussions drive home the point that chemists always need to think in terms of a continuum of interactions, if they truly want to understand the nature of molecules. In today's specialized compartments, with rigid definitions and rules, chemistry is often perceived as a science with rigid boundaries. This is far from being the case, and the weak hydrogen bond is a superb vehicle for proving the continuous nature of the science. It also demonstrates the much more general paradigm of always thinking in terms of all kinds of interactions, 'strong' and 'weak', which any chemist, no matter what his specialty, has to appreciate. More than anything else, the study of such weak interactions proves that chemistry is still very much an art with many thin boundaries between concepts, and not just a science. It is not an exact science like physics, but it is precisely this ambiguity in it which nonetheless can be classified, that makes it a unique discipline. This book is a striking example of this fact.

Book Description
Time-Varying Systems and Computations is a unique book providing a detailed and consistent exposition of a powerful unifying framework (developed by the authors) for the study of time-variant systems and the computational aspects and problems that arise in this context. While complex function theory and linear algebra provide much of the fundamental mathematics needed by engineers engaged in numerical computations, signal processing and/or control, there has long been a large, abstruse gap between the two fields. This book shows the reader how the gap between analysis and linear algebra can be bridged. In a fascinating monograph, the authors explore, discover and exploit many interesting links that exist between classical linear algebraic concepts and complex analysis.
Time-Varying Systems and Computations opens for the reader new and exciting perspectives on linear algebra from the analysis point of view. It clearly explains a framework that allows the extension of classical results, from complex function theory to the case of time-variant operators and even finite-dimensional matrices. These results allow the user to obtain computationally feasible schemes and models for complex and large-scale systems.
Time-Varying Systems and Computations will be of interest to a broad spectrum of researchers and professionals, including applied mathematicians, control theorists, systems theorists and numerical analysts. It can also be used as a graduate course in linear time-varying system theory.
Customer Reviews:
Treasure Trove for advanced theory on lin ear systems.......2007-03-01
This is definitely an outstanding book on linear time-varying systems. It contains a substantial amount of original work and results compiled in a compact way nowhere else to be found. The book is heavy on the theoretical side and not very close to applications. If You are searching for a book containing recipes for your every day problems - forget it. If search for a book that provides You with in depth descriptions on a mathematically challenging topic - You found it. A last note - in spite of the great contents it is a tough read, even for experts in the field. So beware and enjoy.
