The title says it all in this marvelous retrospective of the work of the renowned BBC Natural History Unit. In addition to fascinating descriptions of filming techniques Parsons gives behind-the-scenes exclusives, and hot gossip on the personalities involved. I particularly enjoyed the details of David Attenborough's burdensome riders for location filming - his trailer was to be stocked at all times with chilled Evian, fettucine alfredo, grilled fish, 200 gardenias and a huge bowl of M&Ms (no red ones). Parsons recalls how Sir David nearly stormed out of the gig when filming gorillas in the Cameroon rainforest after a runner fouled-up on the mineral water; but pro that he is, Attenborough soldiered on, making do with San Pellegrino and going on to provide the world with some of the most startling images of human interaction with these majestic primates.

Todd Dayton's book, "San Francisco's Best Dive Bars" is one of the most engagingly, wittily written guides that has ever been written.

It's about time that someone took the time and effort to lovingly describe an essential part of any major city: its dive bars. San Francisco in particular has a large, colorful lot to choose from.

Of course, the book is not quite exhaustive, but it does a very good job of accurately capturing the vibe, charms, denizens, and atmosphere of each of SF's best dive bars.

I'm slightly ashamed to admit that before reading this book, I'd already been to half of Todd's top ten SF dives. 'The Brown Jug' is one that came highly recommended in this book as a quintessential dive, so I went last night... and wasn't disappointed.

Immediately upon entering the 'Jug'-- which proudly has an excerpt from Todd's guide plastered on the front door-- we were greeted with witty, drunken banter and laughing before we could even sit down. These people are a hoot. Overheard at the bar, within the first 30 seconds upon entering:

patron: (in boastful drunkenese) "I'm normal... and I've got the papers to prove it!"

bartender: (in an incredulous tone) "Why would you need papers to prove that you're normal?"

It doesn't get any better than this. Some of the descriptions of Dayton's favorite dives are laugh-out-loud funny, even more so if you're already familiar with that bar, because his descriptions are so spot-on. I am a HUGE fan now.

Particularly hilarious are the reviews on "Hawaii West" (went there last night, and true to form, the owner was the drunkest, loudest one in there), "Trad'r Sam's", and the "Ha-Ra". Anyone who knows or has met the bartender Carl at the Ha-Ra will soil themselves with laughter. It's so true.

In summary, anyone who has cast a loving eye on San Francisco's best dive bars and anyone who can see the beauty in the scruffy, run-down, faded glory and charm of a good dive bar will love this book. It is downright inspiring. Todd Dayton is a poet with a true love of the dive bar and all that it has to offer.

Makes you thirsty for San Francisco!.......2004-06-03

I'm going to San Francisco in a few weeks and am eager to use this exciting guide book to find the best place to drink. A must for any who like cheap drinkin'. Even if you don't live in San Francisco!

Fun, but i was comparing...........2006-07-26

I guess if you havent read Meg Cabot or Sophie Kinsella, Rose Wilkins comes across as an inteligent writer with original plotlines and funny jokes. I, however, have read books like this before. So when i started reading So Super Stylish, i was unimpressed. The characters arent very strong and it wasnt an unputdownable book. But it looks like Rose Wilkins had a surge of creativity towards the middle of the book, because the latter half of the book is much better, and it starts to get even more interesting towards the end.

Overall, this is a good read for youngsters and quite enjoyable, but if i had to recommend another book instead of this, i'd reccomend a Meg Cabot book. Because really, you cant go wrong with Meg.

A fun, quick read for the summer.......2006-03-20

Octavia Clairbrook-Cleeve, daughter of a famous actress and director, has no wish to be in the spotlight. After leaving her glitzy school behind, she enters the local high school. For a while, she believes that she has gotten away from her former life. Unfortunately, she is mistaken. Bud, her mother's boyfriend, decides to pack up and move to live with them, bringing his son, Milton, along. While that causes some excitement, nothing can compare to the fact that India Withers, Octavia's nemesis, comes to her school claiming that she's doing research for her next acting gig. And India is in to cause as much harm as possible to Octavia's somewhat calmer life.

I really liked reading So Super Stylish. I wish that I had started with it's prequel, So Super Starry, first. It was interesting to read about the life of someone famous. While this reminded me of the Introducing Vivian Leigh Reid and the A-List, So Super Stylish is original in it's own way. The story kept me interested as soon as I read the first page. I would recommend this book as a fun, quick read for the summer.

This book is really interesting to read, it covers many types of applications of GFP, and is also packed with nice pictures that make it fun to read. Lots of helpful hints too. Highly recommended to anyone who is thinking of using GFP. This book would be useful both to those just starting to use GFP as well as experienced researchers looking to see what others have tried.

I sure wish I'd had this book when I took freshman chemistry. The pictures of bond angles, electron waves are clear and the best I've seen. The chapter on forbidden and allowed reactions is short but very good. There is an especially good illustration of catalysts and how their surfaces react. Absolutely recommended for any chemistry student facing this subject for the first time.

This work brings together previously unpublished notes contributed by participants of the IUTAM Symposium on Hamiltonian Dynamics, Vortex Structures, Turbulence (Moscow, 25-30 August 2006). The study of vortex motion is of great interest to fluid and gas dynamics: since all real flows are vortical in nature, applications of the vortex theory are extremely diverse, many of them (e.g. aircraft dynamics, atmospheric and ocean phenomena) being especially important. The last few decades have shown that serious possibilities for progress in the research of real turbulent vortex motions are essentially related to the combined use of mathematical methods, computer simulation and laboratory experiments. These approaches have led to a series of interesting results which allow us to study these processes from new perspectives. Based on this principle, the papers collected in this proceedings volume present new results on theoretical and applied aspects of the processes of formation and evolution of various flows, wave and coherent structures in gas and fluid. Much attention is given to the studies of nonlinear regular and chaotic regimes of vortex interactions, advective and convective motions. The contributors are leading scientists engaged in fundamental and applied aspects of the above mentioned fields.

This volume contains the proceedings of an international conference on Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics held at the University of Oxford in April 1995.
