Stories of a lost Paradise.......2007-08-02

Dr. Alexander Skutch passed away in 2004 just short of his 100th birthday.
He was an acclaimed biologist and had published a multitude of studies, articles and books on tropical botany, nature and ornithology.

In this book he describes his early days in Costa Rica just after concluding his work with the banana producing companies in the 1930's. In 1941 he purchased a farm in the rich San Isidro Valley in the South Central part of the country and named it Los Cosingos after the Fiery-billed Aracari, a species of Toucan that was common in the area. Skutch then devoted his time to studying the birds and plants of the area and worked to save some of the forests and preserves of the country. He along with Dan Janzen were two of the most influencial biologists that helped Costa Rica shape a system of national parks that may be the best of any country in the world.

In this book Skutch writes of the early days on the farm, what the area was like before the main rush of settlers and how it changed into an agricultural center. His farm, or better called his sanctuary is the last forest left in the area and still shelters many of the birds, animals and plants once found in the valley before it changed to cropland.
He describes journeys across the Cerro Muerte before the road when it was just a horse trail and travelers would sometimes freeze on its heights here in the tropics. He describes fantastic natural phenomena such as migrations of irridescent winged butterflys that stretched from horizon to horizon that sadly dwindled with time and are no more.

I had noticed that no one had reviewed this book which I imagine is an indicator of the present interest in this book. This is very unfortunate as it is an excellent read and will illuminate aspects of tropical life that have all but disappeared in Central America.

Superb Summary With Photos - Best in its class.......2007-01-11

This guide book is a treasure. Having been to the Loire Valley 10 times, this is always a companion as it has excellent photos, schematics and histories of each of the more than 80 castles in the Eastern and Western Loire area.

While Michellin has maps and photos their books lack the conciseness and clarity.

However I felt one of the endings where you get sent to a slave planet through no fault of your own choice is cheap. Also the guy with the lights and mirrors is rubbish.

Having an uncle who seeks to prove vampires exist has given you quite a responsablity. You find yourself on a train which has two people who are thought to be vampires. Also on the train are gypsies, two men, two friends of yours and the conductor. Your friends have inherited a painting which can destroy the vampires but it's obvious the vampires would want it. In a bid to claim it they kidnap your friends aunt and the stone that can save them from the painting's power. There are several different ways to stop the vampires and you can find that everyone on the train knows of their secrets. Depending on who you do and do not trust the story unfolds in four different ways. Go get 'em!

A good, solid vampire story.......2005-12-12

All too often in children's books, one encounters stories where the monsters or vampires were either a joke or a figment of someone's imagination. In this book, the vampires are very real. The story touches upon the impact that contact with vampires has on Zach, some of it good, most of it bad. Yet, Zach learns a lot from his experiences, while giving the readers a good horror-movie typed thrill at the same time. This book is lots of fun. If you like vampires, you won't be disappointed.

PREFACE IN this little treatise the authors have sought to bring together, in small compass, material relating to the Electrolytic Dissociation Theory which is now somewhat widely distributed throughout many of our excellent text books. The method of presentation is that which they have found service able in enabling their students to comprehend the main facts which are today generally accepted as supporting the Theory, and to understand its application to important types of chemical change. While the book has been written primarily for the use of students, the authors have also kept in mind its probable usefulness to the teacher in preparatory school or college, who may desire to gain in a short time an acquaintance with the fundamental facts and principles in this interesting field. In this connection, however, they desire to express their firm convic tion that this Theory should be touched upon in only the most elementary way in the secondary schools; but this does not, of course, make it less necessary that the well-informed teacher should be prepared to meet the inquiries of the occasional unusually mature and thoughtful pupil. More has been included in this manual than the authors have found it advisable for the college student who is just beginning the study of chemical science to attempt to master, and quite as much as many students who have already had a year of chemical experience in a preparatory school will be able to thoroughly understand. Our experience has shown, however, that it is easier to maintain the interest of the thoughtful pupil if answers to some of the questions suggested to him by the discussions in the main body of the text are placed at his hand, when it is possible to do this without going too far afield. Most of the material of this nature has been printed in smaller type, and may be omitted without loss of continuity ; and it is believed that in the course of a year of study the college student ( even the beginner in chemistry, if he has some knowledge of physics) can be brought to under stand the essential principles included in the main text To insure this it is necessary that the instructor should lose no opportunity throughout his course to emphasize the application of a principle, after it has once been introduced. The attempt to present the subject-matter in a simple form, and at the same time to avoid inaccurate statements, has sometimes led to a conflict of ideals, as, for example, in the application of the Law of Mass Action to iv Preface strong electrolytes. Nothing is said in this connection of the unexplained fact that such electrolytes apparently do not rigidly obey this law, since to discuss this topic would seriously complicate an important statement without corresponding advantage. We believe, however, that in such cases no vio lence has been done to the principles of physical chemistry, and that no impressions have been given which it will be difficult for the student to unlearn if he pursues the subject to its more advanced stages. Some interesting sidelights:Model the crab problem as an M\M\k\1. Mathcad has the employee optimization in their Expert Solver. Use Mathcads logistic solver recast to solve catastrophy problem, very interesting. Redo Beltrami's bessel solution for diffussion using Mathcad for Spherical Bessels, then reformulate to show nodes, then set Frame function to show actual growth in 3 dimenstions. All in all really enjoyed and can't wait to get his next.

Published in 1998 as Havalim, The Pure Element of Time is a rich and evocative autobiographical novel about a writer's development. With his keen eye and opulent writing style, Haim Be'er turns the story of his childhood and maturity into a complex and gripping work of art.

Constructed as a triptych, The Pure Element of Time begins with the author's boyhood. Raised in an orthodox family in an old Jerusalem neighborhood in the early 1950s, Be'er was profoundly influenced by his overly pious grandmother, who was, nonetheless, a natural storyteller whose richly evocative parables and tales inspired his lifelong love for language. The middle section depicts his parents' marriage, a tragic misalliance between a smart, independent Jerusalem-born woman and a withdrawn and defeated refugee from the Russian pogroms. The emergence of the writer's individual literary voice--informed by, yet ultimately transcending, the influences of tradition and history--forms the emotional and psychological core of Be'er's work.
