Don't Waste Your Money!.......2000-06-26
We purchased this book for our tour from Rome to Barcelona and found it absolutely useless. The route follows major highways while missing quiet backcountry roads. The author completely misses the true beauty of France and Italy in bypassing the Amalfi coast, Umbria, Tuscany and Provence. My advice... save your money for maps and a Lonely Planet guide. When every ounce counts, this is not a book you need to lug up a 1000 meter pass.
Maybe he used a car..........2000-04-17
After following this book from Malaga to Florence, it seems almost impossible that the author actually rode this route. He says that the trip can be taken by a person of any experience level, but realistically only an experienced rider would enjoy his route. He is consistantly incorrect with respect to elevations, distances, and major road names. After about a month of cycling we began to plan our own routes. We found that we could use a map and guess better routes than he could suggest in his book. Do not waste your time and money. Buy a good set of Michelin maps and pay attention to the topographical marks on the maps and you will be fine. Nothing is more annoying than to rely on incorrect information.
Good book for general planning........1998-09-11
Used the book as a guide for a cycle trip from Barcelona to Rome. Maps from local tourist offices were required for more detailed road and campground information.
A good book to outline a trip with........1998-03-31
My wife and I used this book to plan our 8 week tour from Barcalona to Athens. We found the book's recomendations on route to be invaluable. The roads recomended provided some of the best riding I have done anywhere in the world. However this book is not a compleat trip guide, it is light on deatail (how to get from one road to the next in a town) and does not have logging or food recomendations. We used other books for campgrounds and tourist information and good maps are a must.

Book Description
What would happen if we kiss?
Kevin led me quickly around the side of the building, then stopped. I managed not to crash into him. I tried to look calm, cool, unperturbed. I told myself not to laugh, especially not a snorting kind of laugh. "Wha . . . what did . . ."
And then he kissed me.
If We Kiss is the story of Charlotte (Charlie to her friends), who finds herself falling for a boy who is off-limits. Her best friend is in love with him, and her mother and his father are dating. Still, Charlie can't help but wonder, what would happen if we kiss?
Customer Reviews:
If We Kiss.......2007-06-13
In Rachel Vails memoir-like book she successfully shows and interprets a teenage girls experiences and struggles through a web of crushes, best friends, family, and lies.
9th grader Charlie always imagined her first kiss as something special and romantic. So when the schools bad-boy, Kevin, takes her outside school and kisses her in front of the principles window; she's not sure what to think when the next day he's dating her best friend Tess.
In this touching and hilarious book, Charlie is forced to choose between her best friend and the boy who is supposed to be off limits.
To make things even more complicated; Charlie's mom, and Kevin's dad begin dating. As Charlie continues to doubt her ability to deal with all the drama between her and Kevin, her mom takes her on a "family" ski trip with her "soon-to-be" family. Now she's tortured with having to daily face her biggest secret while choosing between keeping it a secret, and being the person everyone expects her to be.
But, maybe, MAYBE all these things will get better, and all the feelings will go away if they kiss...
What's a girl to do when she falls for the one guy she's not supposed to be involved with? Find out in this book as it give a clear picture of the experiences we go through and the situations that get us there.
If We Kiss.......2007-05-07
I wonder...I wonder...what will happen if he kisses me. 9th grader, Charlotte inquires this thought a lot after she has her first with Kevin Lazzarus. After she and Kevin flirts in front of their English class he leads her outside of school against a wall to give her, her first kiss. Soon after this Charlie(Charlotte) has a party and walks in to find Kevin and her best friend Tess making out on a couch. Soon Tess start falling in love with Kevin and Charlie is already in love with him. It's to late to tell Tess about her first kiss incident or that she is in love with Kevin too so she keeps it to herself. Soon Kevin and Charlie find out that their parents are dating and have falling in love. When both families go on a skiing trip in Vermont all Charlie can think about is what would happen if her an Kevin kissed again. Soon they do and they both like it , but the down fall...Tess, and their parents get engaged. At a party after spring break Tess gets Charlie really heated up and talks about how she needs to get her first kiss over with so Charlie screams out she already did with Kevin. At that point Charlie's life changed forever. She lost her best friend and Kevin became her stepbrother. When the wedding was over he gave her a kiss...as his little sister and said goodnight. This book was really good. I love it a lot because it was very clear/understanding, the author switched it up by not making everything perfect, and had humor in it. I recommend this book for any girl in grades 7th -10th .
If We Kiss was a great book. The author did a terrific job my making this book clear and easy to understand. She didn't over crowd the words by doing to much describing where the sentence would run off into anther subject. Neither did she do to little of describing where you couldn't get a clear picture of what was happening in the book. She did everything just right. Each page was very clear about what was going on in the story which made you want to keep reading and reading.
In If We Kiss the author didn't do the average fairy-tale story. When I first started reading this book I thought wow, all that is going to happened is she's going to end up with Kevin and her best friend is going to understand and forgive her, but that's not how it happened. Every time something happened that may have put the character in a deeper issue that she already was it didn't get solved right away. Like when Tess found out about her and she didn't jump into her arms and forgive her, or when their parents started dating they didn't of a plan to savage their relationship, they just became siblings.
To top of all the rest of the things that made this book a wonderful book to read the author added humor to her story. Instead a gushy love story the whole way through there were funny part too. Like when Kevin and Charlie were skiing and she was trying to impress him, but ended up falling and caused him to trip over her and they both ended up in the snow.
With all the humor, clear/understanding sentences, and an ending different from the normal fairy-tale the author put into this book the out come was fantastic. I really love this book now. It might one of those book I read over and over again. I recommend it to any girl in grades 7th -10th .
An Amazing Romance Story!!!!.......2007-02-03
This book If We Kiss is very amazing. It all starts when a boy and a girl are going to school. The boy takes the girl and kisses her. At the end find out if they become closer than friends! This is an amazing book for people who love romance stories!!!
Great book!.......2006-12-02
This book, If We Kiss by Rachel Vail, is a really great book. I was just very happy with the beginning and I just love this book! Great book to read for teens.
too cute.......2006-10-12
Can I just say that I love everything by Rachel Vail? She has this way of telling a story that makes you feel like you're totally there, experiencing everything as intensely as her characters do.
The whole thing about chosing between a friend and a boy is classic. Most of us would be like, "Dude! I'd never hurt a friend for some random guy!" But when you're in it, nothing is that simple. When you're in it, you act in ways you never thought you would. And that's what I love about this book. Seeing how crazy passion can make you. And then finding out what loyalty, to yourself and to others, can make you do when you least expect it.

The Evolution of Individuality
ASIN: 0521624258 |
Book Description
What makes a biological entity an individual? Jack Wilson shows that past philosophers have failed to explicate the conditions an entity must satisfy to be a living individual. He explores the reason for this failure and explains why we should limit ourselves to examples involving real organisms rather than thought experiments. This book explores and resolves paradoxes that arise when one applies past notions of individuality to biological examples beyond the conventional range, and presents a new analysis of identity and persistence.
Customer Reviews:
An exciting subfield of biophilosophy.......2006-10-13
In this book, Dr. Wilson tackles a neglected, but stimulating and exciting, area of theoretical biology and biophilosophy: The problems and complexities explicit and implicit in individuating biological organisms. What is a biological individual? By what necessary and sufficient criteria are entities to be counted as spatiotemporally discrete living things? Dr. Wilson tackles these questions and many more. He fleshes out classical views of identity and persistence, including Aristotle and John Locke, and dovetails his ruminations with more contemporary (and decidedly pertinent) philosophers such as David Wiggins. Dr. Wilson contends that the commonsense or folk idea of a biological individual fails when applied to frighteningly disparate forms of life, such as colonial organisms and fungi. This is (as of this writing) the only book devoted to this subfield of biophilosophy of which I am aware, and as a work of metaphysics and theoretical biology, it is a must-read for students of phlosophy of biology and theoretically-inclined students of the life sciences (particularly those working at the organism level).
How many time zones are there in the Soviet Union?.......2001-10-03
Maybe that title should be "were" rather than are....oh well. Anyways, I haven't read the book, but Jack Wilson is my philosophy professor at Washington & Lee University and he really seems to know what he's talking about.
By the way, there are (were) 11 time zones in the Soviet Union.

Book Description
This work examines the conflict between movements and regimes using dynamic mathematical modeling methods. Most of the deaths from political violence in the world in this century have not been caused by war, but by conflict between governments and dissenters. It is hoped that scholars will improve their understanding of these conflicts, and thus help to reduce the costs.
Book Description
In sailing westward in 1492, did Columbus defy the prevailing belief that the Earth was flat? Was Thomas Paine an atheist? Was Truman plucked from obscurity to be FDR's running mate in 1944? Are presidential campaigns nowadays far dirtier than they were in the past? Is Hillary Clinton the most active or influential First Lady ever? Not so, says Paul Boller, in this delightfully informative look at some of the most common myths and misconceptions about the American past. As he did in his bestselling They Never Said It, Boller provides us with a cornucopia of historical correction, debunking myths that range from the trivial--for instance, George Washington did not have false teeth made of wood (they were made of ivory)--to the pernicious (FDR did not know in advance that the Japanese planned to bomb Pearl Harbor). We learn that most educated people in Columbus's day knew the world was round (it was Washington Irving who first portrayed Columbus as defying a coterie of flat-earthers); that Washington's famous Farewell Address was mostly written by Alexander Hamilton; that the Pledge of Allegiance was penned by Francis Bellamy, a devout socialist, in 1892 (and it was intended as a paean to big government); that Thomas Paine was not an atheist, but a deist (as were Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin), and his Age of Reason attacked both organized religion and atheism; that Truman was far from an obscure politician in 1944 (he had been on the cover of Time in 1943 for his Senate work uncovering waste and fraud in the war industries, and a Look magazine poll placed Truman among the ten figures who had contributed the most to the war effort); that presidential campaigns in the old days were more vituperative than recent ones; and that several First Ladies were more influential than Hillary Clinton, most notably Eleanor Roosevelt and Edith Wilson (the latter played a crucial role in her husband's administration from 1919 to 1921, after he suffered a massive stroke). Boller doesn't simply debunk each myth, but instead provides us with much fascinating history surrounding each case, so that the reader is treated to intriguing discussions of many singular episodes in American history, including the Kennedy assassination, the McCarthy hearings, the events leading up to Pearl Harbor, and Watergate. And finally, if the book provides many eye-opening surprises and amusing passages, there is also a serious side of Boller's exploration of American myth. As he shows, much misinformation has been cooked up for political or ideological reasons. By debunking these tales, Boller warns us to question what we hear and what we think we know about America and about our leaders, past and present. The chronicles of American history are strewn with legends, fables, folklore, misconceptions, and outright lies. Patriotism has set many a tall tale in motion, but so have political partisanship and ideological zeal. For everyone who loves history--or the truth--Paul Boller has given us a candid and absorbing look at the American past that helps us get a good sense of where we have been and who we are as a people.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent layman's book.......2005-02-08
This may not be a "scholarly" tome, that just makes it readable. In the various chapters he relates on what is commonly believed is false. The Jefferson/Hemmings controversy will never being agreed upon by all. Some reviewers have claimed there was a right-wing biased, but if he was right-winged biased, then why did he defend Elanor Roosevelt from charges of infidelity. If he was so conservative, then how come he did not write so fondly of Joseph McCarthy as Ann Coulter has done?
Written by a Emiritus Professor of History, you can rest assured of this book's accuracy. I highly recommend. Even as a professional historian, I find this a delightful break from harsh "scholarly" tomes.
Hillary and the Indians.......2004-06-19
This book is conservative Boller's cash cow. All he has to do is take grade school myths and "debunk" them using the encyclopedia. Who really thought Columbus was trying to prove that the world was round? Not since Kindergarten have I thought on such a precious issue. Let's face it, only conservatives who rarely read books actually believe such things. Chances are, if you believe, or care, that Columbus was trying to prove the world round, you probably also believe it rained for 40 days and 40 nights and a big boat with a male and female of every species on the planet could fit onto the Titanic.
Boller also intends to "prove" that the Indians were not "one with nature" but polluters and warmongers like us. Is his chortling at this supposed myth supposed to be an implicit justification for our ancestors horrible treatment of them or our pollution of the environment? Such is the implication.
In any case, the brainwashing is so thinly veiled as to be almost embarrassing, not that a conservative would be able to lift the wool from their eyes. In the very title we have his real thesis: "Clinton = questionable," and the names of the chapters inside follow suit "environmental pollution = OK," "Hillary = lazy lesbian."
Attention readers, leave it to the gullible students at the University where this guy teaches to sink their wooden teeth into questions of orthadontal history. A better book: Man rises from the dead: Not so! Man lives inside a whale: Not so! Frogs rain down from the sky: Not so! Man feeds a whorde of beachnicks with 10 fish: Not so!
A little clarification on Jefferson.......2003-11-08
I am writing this just to clarify what was revealed by the DNA evidence with Thomas Jefferson. It was concluded that beyond a doubt a Jefferson impregnated Sally Hemmings. It could have been Thomas, or any of his brothers, cousins, sons, father, etc. With all the Jeffersons who surely visited Monticelo, it is impossible to say with any degree of certainty that T. Jefferson was indeed the father of Sally Hemmings's child. Although (insert opinion here) does it really matter? I think one of the most beautiful things about Thomas Jefferson was that he realized his wrongs and understood them as well as anyone else. He claimed that slavery was a trap for not only the slaves, but the slave holders! For him, slavery was an addiction that he could not and did not ever overcome. Read his writings some time and you will find this is true.
Excellent.......2003-06-28
More people need to read books like this. It is short sweet and full of interesting little known facts about US(North American) history.
ok for some basics........2002-11-11
Not So! is Paul Boller's attempt to uncover American myths. The porblem is that there seems to strict coherance to the book and mearl a collection of tales. Some of the stuff is actually interesting such as chapter 2 entitled 'Pre-Colombia America' about how things like warfar and environmental damage being caused by American Indians before European colonialization and chapter 33 called 'losing China' about how America did a pretty good attempt to prevent China from becoming the world's largest communist state. However, there are other chapters that are too obscure that take away from more of the serious chapters. Examples are chapter 8 called 'George Washinton's False Teeth' and chapter 16 entitled 'President Fillmore's Bathtub'.
Overall, Not So! is OK but it could have been better if there was more cohesion.
Book Description
Ever wonder what it would take to turn all of your dreams into reality? In
The Life You Imagine, All-Star New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter shows how you can use the same game plan that helped an eight-year-old boy who fantasized about playing baseball for the Bronx Bombers grow up and become MVP of the 2000 World Series. With the help and support of both of his parents, Derek developed a practical program that would assist him in achieving all of his personal and professional aspirations-and now he shares his secrets to success so that you can get closer to living your dream, too.
In this inspiring, information-packed book, Derek provides you with the ten lessons that have guided him throughout his life on and off the field, from his dream of being a gifted, hardworking athlete to his goal of becoming an active community leader. Using personal stories from his own life as a student athlete in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and as a Yankee team player, Derek writes about the simple steps that put him on course for success, including:
* Setting your goals high and finding the right role models
* Being serious but still having fun
* Challenging yourself daily and not being afraid to fail
* Surrounding yourself with a strong supporting cast
Filled with rare family photos and pictures of Derek playing for the Yankees,
The Life You Imagine is an intimate look into the life of a superstar athlete -- including the remarkable relationship he has with his family, what it's like to play with the Yankees, and how he's used his baseball celebrity to found the Turn 2 Foundation, a drug and alcohol prevention program for kids.

Great book and great lessons for kids. Shows what can happen when you are ambitious enough and try hard enough. Great book about Derek and where he came from and where he wants to go!
Derek Jeter.......2006-12-05
After reading the first couple of pages I knew right away that this book would be a good one. The reason Derek Jeter became so well known is because he started very young knowing what he was going to do in life. Throughout high school and college Derek Jeter was an outstanding athlete and student, but at times he did have those people that said that he couldn't do it and that he couldn't make it to the major leagues. This book would be recommended to those who look at Derek Jeter as an idol and also are athletes. Reading this book could change the way you look at Pro athletes and maybe even inspire you to do better.

Book review mod 1
Over the summer I read a few books. One of those books was The Life You Imagine: Life Lessons for Achieving Your by Derek Jeter. I choose this book because I'm a Yankees fan and love Derek Jeter. This book is a great book for someone who needs a role model. Derek Jeter is an amazing role model he had strait A's growing up. In this book Derek Jeter tells you how he grew up and how hard it was for him and how he never stopped trying to get what he set his goals for. This book is wonderful it shows you how any body can do it. His dream his whole life was to play short stop baseball for the New York Yankees. This book is one of those books that will inspire a person to go out and try harder then every one and get what he set out for. That's how good this book is, your are into baseball and trying hardest any way. This book is written well and will show you how a person who really like really tries his hardest and never gives up and will do what ever he has to, just to get what he sets out for. If there was a rating for this book it would get a 10 out of 10 or 100 out of 100 or 5 stars. That's just my opinion. This book is just like I said be for just one of those books that just makes a person want to do something good in life or achieve a goal or something. In this book Derek Jeter said that he would write all of his goals down and check them of as he achieved them threw out the year. This book is wonderful inspiring and just an all around baseball lovers dream book, if I was to recommend this book to anyone it would defiantly be a YES! This book is one of my favorites and would hope it would be one of yours as well. =]

The life you imagine.......2006-06-05
This book starts off as derek jeter stating that he wil play for the New York Yankees when he is 8 years old. They discuss the 10 rules about how to live you life and what to do. Growing up derek had alot of racial problems with his parents. He had one black and one white, and he had a sister, they were a really close family.
growing up there were many racial problems in his town. He went to college in Kalamazoo michigan. He played baseball there and now hes making millions doing what he loves. He said he loves to wake up every morning knowing he loves his job.
Derek is always saying set your goals high so you are always working toward them. Not too high to where you cannot reach them but just high enough that you have to work at it to get to them.
This is one of the greattest books i have ever read. I will give 2 thumbs up. It was a very interesting book becuase i lvoe baseball and i want to be exactly like derek jeter.
The Life You Imagine.......2006-05-21
The Life You Imagine by Derek Jeter and Jack Curry starts with 8-year-old Derek Jeter dreaming about playing baseball with the New York Yankees. It gives the 10 steps he followed to achieve his dream, and explains how anyone can use these steps to become successful.
Derek Jeter is currently the starting shortstop for the New York Yankees. He is a dedicated, hardworking athlete and an amazing role model in the community. He is very involved in his family and believes the values his parents raised him with are the reason for his success. He was raised in Kalamazoo, a small town in southern Michigan.
When he was growing up, he had racial problems with some of the kids is his small town. This was a big deal for all of his family, and he and his sister were often fighting with some of the other kids in town. Racial issues were, and still are, a huge problem in his life.
As a role model, Derek felt the need to contribute to the community, so he started a foundation called Turn 2 that helps prevent drug and alcohol abuse in kids. They have a yearly banquet to raise money. His dad is a huge helping planning fundraisers, and both him and his dad put in a lot of time and hard work to make these yearly events perfect. You have to respect all of the hard work done for others and know that he is doing this without self-benefit.
By reading this story, you should know that Derek Jeter is someone who should be respected for all of his hard work and dedication to doing something he loves. This is a true story about a professional athlete who strived for his dreams and achieved them.
This story is very adamant about setting your goals and setting them high. Derek's philosophy is that if you set your goals high, that makes you push yourself harder in pursuit of reaching them. After you reach these goals, you have to set newer, even higher ones. I believe in his theory and I have tried to live my life following his lead. I liked this story a lot and it had a big impact on me.
Book Description
Following World War II, the onset of nuclear weapons, long-range jet bombers, and ballistic missiles radically changed American foreign policy and military strategy. The United States Air Force, led by men of far-sighted vision and uncommon dedication, accepted the challenge of organizing and leading a massive research and development effort to build ballistic missiles.
In the quarter of the century since, these weapons have constituted one of the tree legs of the strategic triad, the basis of America's strategy of deterring nuclear war, yet they have received less attention from the public and within the Air Force than the more glamorous manned bombers of the Strategic Air Command or the missile-launching submarines of the U.S. Navy. This volume attempts to correct the imbalance by telling the story of development of Air Force ballistic Missiles.
It concentrates on the first generation of ballistic missiles: the intercontinental Atlas and Titan, and the intermediate range Thor. Although the effort to develop rockets has a longer history than commonly assumed, the modern history spans the relatively short era from 1945 to 1960. During this brief interval, missiles advanced from drawing board to alert status, where the next generation now remains poised to deter war.

Avoid this Guide.......2007-02-13
This study guide is rife with errors. Even if someone were to give you the book at no cost, you should still not read it. It does more harm than good.
Not an adequate study guide.......2002-07-04
I feel that this book was not a very adequate study guide. I have studied from many CLEP test preparation books and found those easy to study from. This book was not easy to use and did not cover a lot of the information that was on the test. I would not recommend using this book to prepare for the American Government CLEP test.

This book is a sad excuse for a study guide. It is a copy of pages from another book and lacks an expaination of the answers given for the sample tests. I have passed 6 CLEP exams but this is the first one I ever failed. I knew all the material in the study guide, too bad the guide had nothing to do with the test.
Excellent preparation for American Government CLEP exam.......2000-07-28
I used this book of sample tests to prepare for the American Government CLEP exam. While I read a basic introductory American Govt text and supplemented that reading with more detailed info in a college textbook, I found the time I spent working through these tests was the most beneficial. I fully believe it contributed the most to my success on the test. I would highly recommend it to anyone preparing for the test.
Product Description
The American Government CLEP test covers the Government and politics you would learn in a 101 class. You will learn how a bill becomes a law as well as a review of some of the most important Supreme Court cases of all time. A quick review of the Amendments to the Constitution and you will be on your way to passing this test. This study guide also includes flashcards.

WORTHLESS!! DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!.......2006-10-03
This book is worthless, if you study it by itself you will not pass!!
Too Basic.......2006-05-12
I bought this book hoping it would be the only thing I would need to pass the test. Well I was way wrong. There is no way that I would of been able to pass the test just by using this study guide alone. Overall this purchase for me was a complete waste of money. If you want to get good info to help you pass the CLEP exam I strongly reccomend that you look somewhere else. Don't waste your money on this junk.
Pretty much worthless.......2006-04-01
This "book", which is really only a couple dozen pages, was written by a University of Phoenix employee and quickly runs through the core of US Government. Many of the main facts are mentioned, though nothing essential is explained; detail is far from the manuals forte. There are lists of the Amendments, all abbreviated, and so too are lists of some of the major Supreme Court cases. This means that you'll have an idea of what is/was entailed, annnd that's about it. I received a stapled printout practice exam with this that appeared to have once been a part of the manual (or was being added). In it were several questions on things not covered nor hinted in the rest of the materials. All in all, the best advice that was written on its pages was to find other resources.
Not worth the money.......2006-03-22
I paid almost $40 for this and received an emailed PDF file. It is only 39 pages long; 25 pages have information on American Government. As such, it does not cover the subject comprehensively enough to pass the CLEP and would probably only be useful as a review after reading and understanding a regular textbook. It looks more like a student's organized study notes than something that was written by an expert on the subject. If you do buy it, don't depend on it alone.
One plus to this book is a 50-question practice test. The questions aren't phrased much like the actual questions on the test, but another practice test is always good.
American Government is a harder-than-average CLEP (Most people score 5-15 points below their usual score with the same amount and intensity of preparation). The main difficulty lies primarily in the wording of the questions and answer choices, not necessarily the difficulty of the subject matter itself. They won't just ask a straightforward question with a straightforward answer. You have to be able to pull from your knowledge of several different facts in order to answer one question, which is why you need a much more comprehensive book to study.
I studied the Cliff Notes American Government book and Microsoft Encarta for 2 weeks and got a 68. I recommend the Cliff Notes over this book.
Disappointed...........2006-02-03
I purchased this study guide to help prepare me for the American Government Clep Exam. Though the guide was fairly thorough in covering the topics that it outlined, I believe that it failed to cover the brunt of material found in the exam.
I was disappointed to find out that even though the guide touched on most of the topics in the exam, it failed to cover the material in-depth enough to properly prepare someone to answer most of the questions.
With that being said, I did pass the Clep Exam, but I only passed with a 58 (a score of 50 is passing, 80 is perfect). If the exam had not been packed with almost 20 questions about graph and chart interpretations, which had little to do with politics, I am sure I would have failed. Thank God for the easy questions.
Anyhow, I would recommend that anyone searching for a comprehensive American Government Clep study guide search elsewhere. Good luck with your tests, and I hope you find a better study aid than I did.

Book Description
-- Michael A. Mares, Oklahoma Museum of Natural History
Tropical habitats may contain more than a third of the world's plant and animal species; Costa Rica alone is home to one of the highest levels of biodiversity per unit area in the world, and stands at center stage in worldwide conservation efforts. Within such regions, the use of state-of-the-art digital mapping technologies -- sophisticated techniques that are relatively inexpensive and accessible -- represents the future of conservation planning and policy. These methods, which employ satellites to obtain visual data on landscapes, allow environmental scientists to monitor encroachment on indigenous territories, trace park boundaries through unmarked wilderness, and identify wildlife habitats in regions where humans have limited access.
Focusing on the rich biodiversity of Costa Rica, the contributors demonstrate the use of geographic information systems (GIS) to enhance conservation efforts. They give an overview of the spatial nature of conservation and management and the current status of digital mapping in Costa Rica; a review of the basic principles behind digital mapping technologies; a series of case studies using these technologies at a variety of scales and for a range of conservation and management activities; and the results of the Costa Rican gap analysis project. GIS Methodologies for Developing Conservation Strategies provides powerful tools for those involved in decision-making about the natural environment, particularly in developing nations like Costa Rica where such technologies have not yet been widely adopted. For specialists in such areas as geography, conservation biology, and wildlife and natural resource management, the combination of conceptual background and case examples make the book a crucial addition to the literature.
