If a picture's worth 1,000 words, this book--with its hundreds of breathtaking photos of America's National Parks--is a well-stocked bookstore. Accompanied by the words of poet laureate Mark Strand, These Rare Lands is a perfect coffee-table book for anyone who has enjoyed the wonders of nature's wildest places. From a storm over Sequoia National Park in California to the otherworldly stalactites and stalagmites of New Mexico's Carlsbad Caverns and an Atlantic sunset in Maine's Acadia, this is a book that draws you back again and again. Photographer Stan Jorstad's obvious love of nature comes through in the thoughtful approach he takes to his life's work, contained in the pages of These Rare Lands.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Terrible photo printing.......2003-09-14

The quality of the reproduction of the photos in this book is terrible. A fuzzy mess. The publisher did the photographer a real disservice in reproducing his work in such a poor manner.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pictures.......2003-01-04

A coffee table book sure to inspire you. This book was one of the things that really sparked my interest in nature photography. The stunning vistas and colors will capture your imagination and inspire you to travel to the beautiful places of this country!

5 out of 5 stars Awe-Inspiring Photos.......2002-01-12

Jorstad's photographic review of each of America's 54 national parks is an absolutely amazing look at some of the most beautiful places in our country. Jorstad visited each park several times, during different seasons. His visits enabled him to capture the light of each park, and provides the reader with incredibly nuanced and beautiful panoramas of each location. The pictures are accompanied by a lovely, lyrical text.

Overall, this book is a great investment for armchair travelers who want to experience the wonders of nature. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking pictures of nature's beauty.......2000-04-03

One of my favourite books with wonderful pictures by Stan Jorstad and intuitive texts by Mark Strand which helped me to understand more about the importance of the American National Park System and which overwhelmed me with its beauty. I was attempted to go there immediately and enjoy the pure beauty of nature again as I will surely do soon !

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Magnificent Panorams.......2000-01-02

Panoram Photography at its absolute finest. A treasure chest of fine images that would be appreciated by both the nature lover as well as the photographer. The breath taking views of our national parks are available to us at their peak of beauty through Stan's eyes. His photography in this book, which represents ten years of devotion, provides us with beauty that very few of us would ever be able to see. Thank you Stan!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Cruise Guide.......2007-05-17

I have used Stern's Guide for years. It is consistent and comprehensive.
I have not found any "wrong information" as suggested by another reviewer.

The menus do go on. However, cruising IS about eating and the examples are important when evaluating a cruise line.

Stern even differentiates between ships within a cruise line. He doesn't just rate the line.

It is a great reference book and offers lots of bang for the buck!

5 out of 5 stars An essential travel guide .......2007-05-09

This was the most complete cruise guide, I have ever read. It covers just about everything one needs to know about a cruise. It gave me all the details for every ship afloat. The rating system was most helpful and I especially appreciated the inclusion of menus, programs and photos for all the ships. The chapter describing what to do in every port of call in the world was also very valuable in planning my shore excursions.
    I highly recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Too much of the wrong information.......2006-12-09

I found the book had alot of information but was quite disorganized. The many pictures, endless diner menus and sample daily iternaries became overwhelming. When I tried to find specific information it became difficult. The ratings were not very elaborate. I would only recommend this book for people cruising for the food only.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but out of date.......2005-10-13

It's a good book, but some data about cruise lines and ships are out of date. The info about cruise ships are poor (it could be more complete and organized as in Berlitz guide). This guide is better for passenger asking for info about destinations (but the info on Brazil is also poor - there's no reference to important destinations as Búzios, Ilhabela, Florianopolis, Fortaleza, Recife, Natal and the paradise islands of Fernando de Noronha).

Few people can say they've sailed on more than 500 cruise ships, visited every major port of call in the world, and inspected nearly every cruise vessel in operation. With more than 35 years of cruising under his cap, Steven Stern is a certifiable sea dog with a wealth of personal experience to share.

Stern's Guide to the Cruise Vacation is an encyclopedic volume covering how to choose a cruise company, how to select your destination, how long to stay, what day-to-day seafaring is like, cruising for singles and with children, as well as cruising for joggers and tennis buffs. One chapter is devoted entirely to reviews of each cruise line and its vessels, including reprints of actual menus and day and evening activity plans, with photos when available. Stern uses "ribbon awards" like a star rating system to highlight the best of what each line has to offer in categories such as service, cabin spaciousness, activities and entertainment, good for singles, and food.

This guide also provides a list of all of the major ports of call with detailed recommendations for how to spend the usually short periods of 6 to 10 hours allotted for time ashore, including must-see sights and where to dine, swim, and soak up some sun. --Kathryn True

2 out of 5 stars A lot of information - but absolutely confusing.......2004-02-02

The book offers a vast amount of more or less useful information. On the pages with the ship reviews there are all medical facilities and personnel mentioned, but only by abbreviations. Unfortunately, the key for the more than 20 terms (like: N-3 = 3 Nurses) is to be found far away from the ship reviews. (It took me about 15 minutes to find it in more than 700 pages!).
In the extensive listings on cabin grades or alternative dining areas (in fact, most interesting information) another flood of abbreviations comes along. The fact that each line in the listing is labeled with A., B., and so on, as well as having abbreviations like A (for Asian food), CG (for Continental Gourmet), E (for elegant) and many others makes the reading extremely difficult.
The ship reviews concentrate on facts (from brochures) and give little information on the 'real' quality. Then there is a star rating; black stars mean that it is a luxury cruise ship, stars which are crossed out are for premium ships, hatched stand for standard and white stars for economy products. So it is possible that a ship has a 5-star economy rating - what can be confused with a premium product, according to ratings published in other guides. And to add to the confusion, there are ships with black AND crossed out stars, meaning that they are positioned between premium and luxury standards (Windstar for instance).
A good idea is to show daily programs and menues from various cruise lines and there are several photographs, showing the interiors - unfortunately, in b/w and of very poor quality (no contrast on cheap paper).
The book cannot be recommened for first-time cruisers who need a help to make their decision. For a marketing expert in the cruise industry - like myself - it might provide some interesting additional information.

Cathy Young, author of the brassy, bold Favorite Teenage Angstbooks Web zine has finally made her mark on the paper publishing scene as the editor of this stellar collection of teen cravings created to make you blush. In "Someone Bold," Sarah Dessen writes about a former fat girl who learns she deserves better than the first sweet-talking boy who comes along post-poundage. Victor Martinez writes poignantly about how desire can quickly be tempered by divisions of race and class in "The County Fair," and Jacqueline Woodson's story of two girls who loved and lost because of death and drugs won't make you blush so much as weep. And in a genuinely funny turn, Jennifer Armstrong's short riff about a girl whose love object isn't another person, but rather something with four wheels and a gearshift will leave teens helpless with laughter. And that's not all--Norma Fox Mazer, Rich Wallace, Ellen Wittlinger, Nancy Garden, Rachel Vail, Emma Donoghue, and Angela Johnson have also contributed their two cents about pounding hearts and sweaty hands, and the results are a truly strong chain of stories with no weak links. The sexy cover, high-caliber writing, and bite-sized reading pieces guarantee that teens will gobble up One Hot Second in about one hot minute. Like Michael Cart's similarly wise and provocative collection, Love and Sex, this is one book that won't linger on the shelf long before teens discover the tantalizing and oh-so-true words that lie within and compulsively share it (pertinent pages tabbed down) with all their friends. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

            Book Description

Sex. It’s on the minds of every teenager, whether they’re having it, not having it, talking about it, or just thinking about it. In this powerful collection, 11 acclaimed writers for young people capture the various expressions of desire–from first crushes to first times, and all of the charged emotions in between. Here, a sleek new teammate becomes more than a friend; a hopeful date feels his evening unravel; a pale boy delivers a sweet but terrible kiss; a wise girl discovers the real rules about love.

Jennifer Armstrong, Sarah Dessen, Emma Donoghue, Nancy Garden, Angela Johnson, Victor Martinez, Norma Fox Mazer, Rachel Vail, Rich Wallace, Ellen Wittlinger, and Jacqueline Woodson have crafted original stories that are as complex and provocative as desire itself. Because anything can happen in one hot second.

For the most part, the stories in this collection are mediocre. One notable exception is "Who Hears the Fish Cry?", which is excellent. (That's why I gave this collection two stars and not one.)

Either you'll like or dislike the stories here. Be prepared to read about sex between all genders: girls and boys, boys and boys, girls and girls. Quite a bit of that in a book that is supposedly for young adults. It's not everyone's taste, and definitely not mine.

5 out of 5 stars Young Adults Personal Discoveries.......2003-11-20

            "How's school today?

            - Fine!

            What did you do today?

            - Stuff!"

How often have "annoying" parents encountered this frustrating exchange of dialogue with their adolescents?

One Hot Second: Stories About Desire Edited by Cathy Young has some penetrating answers to these innocent questions.

Cathy Young has carefully chosen eleven award-winning authors to explore the angst and uncertainties of adolescent desire. Every short story is a little gem!

The all-embracing theme of the book is desire. Each individual essay illustrates how desire influences the fragile blossoming of love.

The eleven authors brilliantly describe a gripping synopsis of the microcosm of adolescent turmoil.

Every chapter touches upon a very special subject. Some are heart wrenching, while others are funny, visceral and downright uncomfortable. Stealing, dysfunctional families, crushes, straight, lesbian or ... love, rejection, first kiss, drug addiction, sports, poetry and more, are all covered in a direct down to earth style.

For example, in Rachel Vail's essay, "One Hot Second", Mallory discovers the weird impressions of her first kiss, utterly "wheew! disgusting!"

Or, Nancy Garden's heroin Penny, as depicted in "Loving Meagan," is not worried that she is a lesbian, but that she is attracted to the wrong girl!

"Who Hears The Fish Cry" by Norma Fox Mazer, captures the healing power of music.

Victor Martinez's "The County Fair", introduces us to Roybal who is in love with Carol. And Carol? Well?.

Written in the first or the third person, the dialogues run the gamut from quick, gritty, witty, to profound. Characters are so well developed they come alive.

As an added bonus, Cathy Young writes about her own experience and has asked the authors for their personal involvement with love. Their interesting answers are yours to discover.

After reading these precious gems, you would have to agree with Young's description: "Each of the fine writers in this collection honors the power of desire to push us forward into the unknown, to help us grow. Desire aches, Desire burns, And, thankfully it blooms."

One Hot Second:Stories About Desire is a must read collection for parents and adolescents alike.

5 out of 5 stars hot, smart, fun!.......2002-06-27

Great authors and great stories in this collection! I loved Rich Wallace's sexy, smart story called "Dawn." I also enjoyed the range of experiences explored in the book -- some quite tame and innocent, others with more heat and maturity. This is a thought-provoking and very fun collection.

5 out of 5 stars Tells the truth.......2002-06-22

Sometimes it's hard to put this stuff into words. The writers in this book do a great job of putting feelings into words. I loved "Someone Bold" the best. Of course I'm a huge Sarah Dessen fan, so that makes sense. Buy her books, too. Dreamland is my favorite.

            2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2002-06-13

I bought this book, hoping that it would be an exciting read. I was very disappointed! Most of the stories start off well but then the endings are very lackluster. After each story, I felt like I was missing something. I know that short stories are supposed to be concise, but that doesn't mean they have to be bland. After every story I thought, "Thats it????" Do yourself a favor and don't buy this book. It's a waste of time and money. The authors seem to cater to teenagers that adults have in mind. We're really more intelligent than people think.
