Kayaking Vancouver Island: Great Trips from Port Hardy to Victoria
ASIN: 1550172646 |
Book Description
In their successful, internationally published book A Boat in Our Baggage, Maria Coffey and Dag Goering described their year-long, worldwide expedition by kayak. Since then, they have continued to travel many parts of the globe, including some of the last truly wild places of the British Columbia coast. Their latest adventure - a 1,000-plus kilometre journey circumnavigating Vancouver Island in its entirety - is detailed and illustrated in Visions of the Wild.
Coffey and Goering set off from their home on Protection Island, BC, in July 1999. For three months they confronted some of the most exposed, storm-battered coastlines British Columbia has to offer: infamous places such as Cape Scott, Estevan Point and the imposing Brooks Peninsula, all of which have become the sites of shipwrecks and fatalities. The voyagers experienced deadly currents, whirlpools and enormous waves, were buffeted relentlessly by wind and rain and spent many a wet, miserable camping trip ashore. But they also explored the serene waters of Nootka Sound, the Gulf Islands and the Broken Group Islands, where they saw stands of ancient rainforests interspersed with raw clearcuts, and spectacular vistas of ocean and sky juxtaposed with intricate coves, rocks and reefs. They had encounters with whales, bears, wolves, sea lions and puffins; and as they stopped at different Native villages, fishing ports and old homesteads, they made friends with many of the diverse people who call the island home.
Brimming with breathtaking colour photographs and compelling journal entries from all stages of their exciting kayaking journey, Visions of the Wild is at once an inspiring chronicle of the adventure of a lifetime, and a beautiful book of photographs that rejoices in the untamed spirit of Canada's west coast.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful!.......2006-04-12
This is a beautifully written book about the authors circumnavigation of the biggest Island off America's Westcoast. Having paddled a lot of the circumnavigation in parts gives them a huge advantage over non-locals since they know a lot of the good landing spots as well as the crux points and have friends along the path. This reflects in the book, where the reader gets the impression that these are two competent kayakers applying their skills to reach their goal. The pictures are stunning and very high quality. This book was the perfect primer for a paddling trip on Johnston Strait and the Broughton Archipelago for me - I could not put it down...
A Fun Read - But:.......2004-06-25
Great photos, and an entertaining narrative of their voyage.
But:
They had several close call/misadventures that all apparently resulted from Dag's decisions to paddle into known poor conditions, and good luck that allowed them to survive the predicaments they got into. Kayaking is great fun, but paddling a little boat in big water means you have to be willing to adapt your plans to stay safe. Maria seems to be the sensible one - she should be the skipper!
Boy-o-boy are they ever hyper-greenies. You know - harvesting trees is not mortal sin. Some people make their living in the timber industry in order for other people to have wood for houses, furniture - even kayaks. The book would be much better without the preaching.
Even with these caveats - it's a fun read and I recommend it.
Dag and Maria's wonderful adventure.......2003-02-10
I bought this book because I have just bought my first kayak and I can't wait for the days in the far future when I can go on such wonderful adventures as what these two, obviously wonderful people, have done. I have a love of British Columbia, and especially Vancouver Island, which their book reinforces with their descriptions of the scenery and the people of the Island, who I have found to be some of the friendliest folks in the world. A great read.
A Must Read for Outdoor Adventurers.......2002-12-03
"Visions of the wild" is a book that you will want to read again. Dag's outstanding photography makes it a good coffee table book to enjoy the pictures time and time again. Maria's simplistic writing style captures your attention, entertains and holds you throughout. It makes readers feel like they are on the journey with Maria & Dag exploring the waters around Vancouver Island. Reading this book, makes me feel like I am revisiting those places in the Pacific Northwest that I have previously travelled (by car and kayak). A great book!
A Must Read.......2002-07-29
My first thought after finishing this book was that I'd like to read it again....immediately! I found myself caught up in the magic and excitement of Dag and Maria's adventure, entertained by their humor and awed by their endurance.
Dag's pictures are a real treat. Beyond supporting the story, they are works of art on their own. Not only is this a teriffic adventure tale, it is a great picture book.
For those who like to venture into the wild, or read about those who do, this book will satisfy. If you can't be out there doing it, a book like this is the next best thing.

Hiking Tennessee Trails.......2000-09-05
I found this book to be quite interesting and informative. It discusses not only the trails themselves but their history. The physical descriptions of the trails are excellent, however I would have liked to see more detailed maps. It is a wonderful book to use as a reference.

The Education of Robert Nifkin is clearly the work of a disturbed mind. But then, if you've read Daniel Pinkwater's 5 Novels, or any of his other excellent titles, you already know that. This book, set in the 1950s, is filled with a typically Pinkwaterian cast of unique and hysterically funny characters. Robert Nifkin's dad, for example ("My father is a son-of-a-bitch from Eastern Europe"), is full of advice for his young son, like "What doesn't kill you makes you strong--or it kills you." And his teachers! His high school, Riverview, is populated by a collection of anticommunists such as his homeroom teacher, Mrs. Kukla, who warns him on his first day, "I can smell a Bolshevik a mile away--and I'm smelling one now." To avoid taking gym, the overweight Robert joins the ROTC, where he meets the only noncommunist of the bunch, the Marxist-theory-spouting Sergeant Gunter.
Robert isn't engaged by the primary method of instruction at Riverview (which is copying from the blackboard), so he stops attending, is threatened with expulsion for truancy, and convinces his parents to send him to the private Wheaton School. At Wheaton, instruction includes many trips to the library, the movies, and late-night sessions at Maxie's Bookshop, crowded with "loonies, lonelys, speakers, listeners, debaters, radicals, beatniks, artists, insomniacs, and chess players." Here, Robert's favorite teacher, Mr. Gerkowitz, asks about his postgraduation plans: "You, Nifkin, while slightly repellent, do not actually present yourself as a borderline case, so it is possible that some college will actually take you. Is this your desire?" Fortunately for us, it is--the book, set forth as Robert's college application essay, is the result. Pinkwater is surely today's funniest writer of books for young people, and readers seeking off-the-wall, irreverent humor won't be disappointed by this bevy of sardonic wit. (Ages 12 to 15) --Neil Roseman
Book Description
The Education of Robert Nifkin is the education of a beatnik. Set in 1950s Chicago and conveyed in the form of a college essay, Robert Nifkin details his journey from a mind-numbing high school that smells to the curriculum-free carnival of a private school ruled by bohemians, beatniks, and freaks.
Customer Reviews:
Just... good.......2007-07-04
Every child should have to read this book at least once. Every adult should read it twice.
Alternative Education.......2006-07-24
Daniel Pinkwater is perhaps the funniest writer of young adult fiction alive, but also not very well-known. His books are hard to find in bookstores, but prove to be a treasure and a laugh-out-loud treat when found. "The Education of Robert Nifkin" is no different.
The novel is written as a response to the following college application essay: "Characterize, in essay form, your high-school experience." Set in 1950s Chicago, the novel follows the title character through his first days at Riverview High School, a setting he soon comes to abhor. No one, teachers or students, seem to care about the missing education, the teachers indoctrinate the students against communists and Jews, and Robert finds himself destined to be a nerd. He soon stops going, and must face being kicked out and sent to an alternative school, where he has much more freedom, and truly begins to learn for the first time.
"The Education of Robert Nifkin" is a quick, funny read. Anyone familiar with Pinkwater's other writings will find familiar territory (and characters), and anyone familiar with Chicago will enjoy the references to landmarks and neighborhoods. The novel reads a little too much like a crazy quilt of stories, not necessarily focused or related, but enjoyable nevertheless.
Pinkwater Remix.......2005-08-19
The Education of Robert Nifkin reprises people, places, and themes from Pinkwater's other works. The Clark theater, Bughouse square, William Lloyd Floyd, a larger-than-life Eastern European father, Chicago, and Wallace Nussbaum (to name a few) all make return appearances from The Snarkout Boys, Alan Mendelsohn, etc. These are things obviously dear to Mr. Pinkwater's heart, and he crafts this new/old story well, just as he did in his early books. Reading it is a lot like going to your favorite restaurant and ordering the usual. No real surprises, nothing really new, but satisfying nonetheless. It did leave me yearning to see some of these familiar themes recast with new plots or people - more of a variation on a theme rather than a remix. Perhaps we'll learn more about the education of Robert Nifkin as he heads to St Leon's for college - Portrait of the Artist as a Young Shmendrik, perhaps?
very strong deja vu.......2002-08-20
I, too, have read Pinkwater's essays and some of his fiction. From what he tells the reader elsewhere, one can't help but wonder if this is his own (very thinly veiled) autobiography. If so, it's pretty dishonest to simply change the names and call it fiction. Writing fiction ought to take a bit more creativity and spark than that but sadly often doesn't. Revisiting the same old territory again and again (fat kid with wacky Jewish family hates school, but finds people and ideas he can relate to outside of it) may result in faithful readers buying anything you publish, but it doesn't do much to let you grow as a writer.
WHAT I REALLY WANTED WAS A NEW COLLECTION OF PINKWATER'S.......2001-11-26
NPR columns, particularly the ones when he was looking at
being a person-of-size in America, but since no new ones have
come out, I picked this up as one of his most recent young adult novels. I expect much of this is autobiographical but it is very funny and wise and has a two-page reading list that I believe may
actually BE a list of the books Pinkwater read in High School. Chances are if you are even reading this review, you have already decided to buy this book. So, go ahead.

Book Description
This monograph provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the optimization of elliptic systems. This area of mathematical research, which has many important application in science and technology, has experienced an impressive development during the last two decades. This monograph aims to address some of the pressing unsolved questions in the field. The exposition concentrates along two main directions: the optimal control of linear and nonlinear elliptic equations, and problems involving unknown and/or variable domains. Throughout this monograph, the authors elucidate connections between seemingly different types of problems. One basic feature is to relax the needed regularity assumptions as much as possible in order to include larger classes of possible applications. The book is organized into six chapters that give a gradual and accessible presentation of the material, and a special effort is made to present numerous examples. This monograph is addressed to a large readership, primarily to graduate students and researchers working in this field of mathematics. Much of this material will prove useful also for scientists from other fields where the optimization of elliptic systems occurs, such as physics, mechanics, and engineering.
Customer Reviews:
Soviet Satire at its Best!.......2007-09-22
You must read "The Life & Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin" prior to reading this book. This is essentially part II of that book.
This is some of the funniest and most biting Soviet satire I've ever read. Voinovich masterfully leads the reader through the chaos that was the Soviet Union. In my opinion, "Pretender to the Throne" is the better half of this two book series.
I highly recommend these two books to all Russian Literature readers! They are simply an essential part of any Russian Literature library. Northwestern University Press has, once again, published a fine book. All their books have durable, attractive covers and fine quality paper.
Satirical Bombardment.......2001-06-25
World War II is on and Chonkin is imprisoned in this sequal to his extraordinary adventures. Chonkin figures less prominently in this sequal. I think, the major character here is the social system itself. Voinovich does not spare anyone or anything: Joseph Stalin, the Soviet military planning, and the prison system--all are criticized. Bumbling bureaucrats continue to bludner like there was no tomorrow. For example, they capture and execute an honest junior officer as a spy, while the real spy continues to work undisturbed. And the bumbling of this sort is pittance in comparison to what has just gone on--the 1937/38 terror. Most outstanding people have been destroyed on no greater basis than wild accusations and Stalin's paranoia. It turns out that the most potent weapon in the war on the cream of society's crop is a simple pencil! Write an accusation on someone who works hard in his field and has his head in the clouds, not paying attention to politics, and that person is soon arrested and executed. Given this absurd atmosphere of repression and the pressure and fear put on the government by war, Chonkin must languish in prison on suspicion of being a descendant of a noble Russian family which is trying to overthrow the government and open the gates to the Germans!
Voinovich's satire is right on target. This book is funny and educational. If you live in a Western democracy you will, at a minimum, reap one important benefit from reading this--you will appreciate even more what you have in your country today. I assigned a number of Russian writers in my Modern Russian Politics class last year, and this is exactly what the impact was. Read Voinovich--his books are humorous and different.
Very good satire!.......1999-07-12
"Pretender to the trone" is the sequel to "The Extraordinary Adventures of Private Iwan Chonkin", and almost as funny (in a grim way)! Those who enjoyed "Iwan Chonkin" should also read this sequel. In the Russian edition I read, they were joined in one volume.
