Customer Reviews:
Remarkable illustrations, superbly rendered; slightly nasty........2000-11-24
First, I don't recommend this for the average Joe. It is too free, too open, too nasty. What is the point in showing animals sphincters? The only thing more revealing would have been dissections, which by the way the author has graciously left out. Its good art work, don't get me wrong. There are some really neat animals, some I have never heard of. So it has its ups but surely, also has its downs. 368 Animal Illustrations is a superbly rendered convenient archive of remarkable illustrations gatherd around 1766 by Georges-Loius Leclerc, Compte de Buffon, a natural scientist from Montbard, France. Buffon's pictorials range from the domestic cat and the Great Dane to our more wild mamals, such as the unique looking Lion-Tailed Macaque, who belongs to the primate family. No matter which of the 368 illustrations you happen to be looking at, you will notice the life-like detail and splendid qualities with which each has been created. The pictures printed within are rich with the exact detailed quality of the original copper plate engravings from which they come, and were created and chosen by Buffon himself. Each carefully chosen depiction is precisely accurate and neatly displayed in a natural setting deemed suitable for its subject. Although several of the illustrations are somewhat revealing in their poses, let's thank Buffon for skipping those he could have chosen of the much more revealing anatomicaly dissections.

Thanks for a great Book Bob!!!.......2006-01-19
I think this is a wonderful book that takes you on a walking tour through Standard Addition in Carlinville, IL. I spent a lot of time with Bob while he was writing about Carlinville's unique Sears Homes section. His book takes you from the square and back with restaurants and stop offs and this is just Carlinville. I haven't investigated the other walks in the book yet.
I have two copies and it's not just because I'm talked about and interviewed in the book.
Good job Bob!

Customer Reviews:
Understandable.......2007-05-20
This book was pretty good, not the best but 4 stars is too low.
The scenario is that the very fat boy Jim, gets teased a lot a school (ovbiously because hes fat), lives with his mother and aunt pol, (his father dies a few years ago) and Jimmy has one secret that pretty much no one knows about: his cooking. He is a very good chef, and plans to open up his own resturant one day but is too embaressed to tell anyone what he thinks. His school coach (father patrick) has seen the abuse that Jimmy has taken from his classmates and offers to help in order for Jimmy to cook for him at a fundraiser for a well to be built to help poor people. Jimmy starts having these weird dreams, and then fiqure out he wants to swim. His classmates see this, and tease him even more, but Jimmy can never stand up for himself. I won't tell you anymore, so you can find out for yourself, but this book talks about important issues about bullying, learning to stand up for yourself, going after your dreams and not being afraid to show who you are. It also contains a huge twist that no one expects, and the only thing ill tell you about that is that Jimmy has family problems that are quite sad, but he learns to deal with them and accept who he is. (This book also contains a litttle bit of romance as well!) I would highly recommend this book, because it really captures you tino reading it and you can learn a few important lessons from it. This author really knows how to write, and if you don't read this book you'll be wishing you did the rest of your life :)!
Sad, deep and a little poetic........2004-12-25
I like the way it is written. It's easy to understand, yet you can feel the pain the boy has endured. Definitely something you can learn from it, poetry-wise, since it has this certain style that makes me like it.
A good book, but not the best.

Book Description
An omnibus edition celebrating a great scientific mind and a legendary American originalincluding a live recording.
Richard Feynman (1918-1988) thrived on outrageous adventures. In the phenomenal national bestsellers "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!" and "What Do You Care What Other People Think?" the Nobel Prize-winning physicist recounted in an inimitable voice his adventures trading ideas on atomic physics with Einstein and Bohr and ideas on gambling with Nick the Greek, painting a naked female toreador, accompanying a ballet on his bongo drums, solving the mystery of the Challenger disaster, and much else of an eyebrow-raising, hugely entertaining, and astounding nature. One of the most influential and creative minds of recent history, Feynman also possessed an unparalleled ability as a storyteller, a delightful coincidence celebrated in this special omnibus edition of his classic stories. Now packaged with an hour-long audio CD of the 1978 "Los Alamos from Below" lecture, Classic Feynman offers readers a chance to finally hear a great tale in the orator's own voice.
Customer Reviews:
Inspirational.......2007-09-06
The stories in this book gave be belly laughs, and they also made me think.
curious indeed.......2007-03-08
This is a wonderful read....a chance to listen to a great scientist with a wonderful quirky mind. It is all interesting, some of it very touching, but the part on the investigation of the Challenger explosion is a classic study in bureaucratic malingering.
Witty and interesting.......2006-11-10
A interesting view of life through the eyes of a down to earth genius.
Two books in one + CD..........2006-03-15
I have purchased almost all Feynman books so far.
Be forewarned. This book is a compilation of "Surely your joking..." and "What do you care what..." plus a bonus CD audio recording of a talk which was "in-te-res-ting" ( a Feynmanism).
If I had realized this, I would only have bought this book instead of all three.
For a more global and thorough exposition of his life, consider Gleick's '93 book "Genius".
For those wondering if they should find anything out about Feynman... There was a student that was asked if he wanted to come along to hear Feynman speak. "No. I'm going to study instead." Years later he was still kicking himself for passing up the opportunity. Feynman has this effect. Once you find out about him, you'll probably want to have done so earlier.
What's in store for you is a look back from the 20's to the 80's through the eyes of a physicist that married his sweet heart against the advice of family and lost her to tuberculosis a short time before a cure, rubbed elbows with the greats Einstein, Bohr, Dyson, Schwinger, Fermi etc, patrioticly worked on anti-aircraft defenses, helped build the atomic bomb, was bold enough to look at it directly behind a windshield that blocked the harmful ultra violet, cracked safes, deciphered Mayan hieroglyphs, learned to speak and taught in Portuguese, ironed out the problems in Quantum Electrodynamics, went around Caltech acting weird from a concussion for three weeks before any one noticed, "Well, next time say something!", he scolded. The '65 Nobel prize: "You'll raise more of a fuss if you refuse it.", learned to draw, play drums, inspired nanotechnologists, quantum computing research and after surviving 10 years of cancer helped trackdown the problem with the Space Shuttle Columbia and lastly said: "I'd hate to die twice. It's boring!"
Book Description
In most versions of the Hippolytos myth, Phaidra is depicted as an utterly debauched character, a woman reduced to shamelessness by the power of Aphrodite. In Euripides' Hippolytos, however--informed by the playwright's moral and religious fascination--we find a Phaidra resisting the goddess of love with all her strength, though in the end unsuccessfully. Phaidra becomes a tragic foil for Hippolytos, making his superhuman virtue at once believable and understandable. Robert Bagg's profound translation of this Euripidean masterpiece is idiomatic, natural, and intensely lyrical, designed not only to be read but performed. Unlike most versions, Bagg's Hippolytos sustains the dramatic tome and dynamics to the very end--even after Phaidra's death--and the moving scenes between Hippolytos and Theseus, and later Hippolytos' death-scene with Artemis, receive here unprecedented plausibility and power.
Customer Reviews:
Hippolytus makes the mistake of scorning the goddess of love.......2002-07-29
"Hippolytus" is set at the palace of Theseus at Troezen, where on each side are statutes of the goddesses Aphrodite and Artemis. This classic Greek tragedy by Euripides opens with Aphrodite declaring her power over all mankind and her intention to ruin Hippolytus, the son of Theseus and Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, because he alone has had the audacity to scorn love. Instead, the young prince has devoted himself to hunting and Artemis, the chaste goddess of the hunt. As the instrument of Hippolytus' downfall, Aphrodite selects his stepmother Phaedra, by making her fall in love with him.
What becomes interesting in Euripides' telling of the tale is how Phaedra resists the will of Aphrodite, having resolved to starve herself to death rather than ever reveal her infatuation. However, Phaedra's secret is revealed when in a state of semidelerium she confesses to her nurse. The nurse, out of love for Phaedra, tries to solicit an appropriate response from Hippolytus, who is horrified that his stepmother wants him as her lover. Mortified that her secret is now known, Phaedra hands herself, but trying to spare the reputation of her children she leaves a note accusing Hippolytus of having tried to rape her. When Theseus returns from a long journey only to find his wife dead at her own hand and his son implicated in her suicide, he pronounces a deadly curse upon Hippolytus.
Ironically, despite the tragic fate that awaits him, Hippolytus is not a sympathetic figure. Certainly his devotion to Artemis does not require him to spurn the ways of love and an Athenian audience would not look kindly upon him as a martyr to the idea of chastity. Of course, this is a story by Euripides, which means readers have to look for another level of meaning. In this regards "Hippolytus" is similar to "Medea." The latter dealt with how the Greeks in general and the Athenians in particular viewed foreigners, while the former deals with the stigma of illegitimacy. After all, Hippolytus is the bastard son of Theseus and the Queen of the Amazons. Consequently, it seems reasonable that Hippolytus has a real hatred for Aphrodite since it was the goddess of love who was responsible for the illegitimacy that makes him unlike other men. Meanwhile, Phaedra becomes the truly tragic character in the tale, who has her dignity taken away from her by a vengeful goddess and a friend with the best of intentions, surely as potent a combination of dangerous characters as you can find in literature.
Another consideration is the portrayal of Theseus, generally accounted the wisest and best of the heroes of classical mythology. Yet in this story the man whose objectivity and sense of fairness made him give Oedipus a resting place (at least as the tale is told by Sophocles in "Oedipus at Colonus") gives way to an angry impulse worthy of Heracles. If we take into account how highly the Athenians esteemed Theseus, then "Hippolytus" again shows the frequent trend in Euripides' plays to attack the city-state in which he lived. It is this implicit critique of Theseus that Jean-Baptiste Racine makes more central to the tale in his Neo-Classical version of the story, "Phaedra." These two plays, "Hippolytus" and "Phaedra," make a very interesting analog for students of drama, classical or otherwise, looking at how the telling and retelling of a tale can reflect the changing societies in which such stories are told. Seneca's version of "Phaedra" can be used towards this end as well.

With an Interpretation of the Myth of Dionysius by Manly P. Hall
In this illustrated reprint of the rare Masonic monograph, Da Costa expresses his belief that modern Freemasonry derives its origin from the Dionysian architects and gives a valuable and comprehensive outline of the opinion of ancient authors on this subject. As the laws of nature and moral rules deduced from them were explained in fables, they were impressed on the memory by symbolical ceremonies which were termed Mysteries. Mr. Hall interprets the central myth of the Dionysian Mysteries and explains the secret metaphysical doctrines of this cult.

Commonality between Eastern and Western Creation myths........1999-07-19
"There is a mystical truth behind every physical fact even as there is a moral force behind every aspect of universal law"..."the letter of the law killeth but the spirit of the law giveth life". Hall's visually sumptuous interpretation of classical Greek creation myths is breathtaking. Both thrillingly readable and footnotely scholarly, his revelation of the common origins of the myths of East and West unfolds with the timeless rhythm of the Music of the Spheres!

Book Description
This book is a new reading of Euripides' Hippolytos, a central play for the study of both Euripides and Greek tragedy. Professor Goff approaches the play through the techniques of modern literary criticism, including deconstruction and feminism, bringing new light to this influential text through her analysis of the play's language. She organizes her study around five critical issues: gender, desire, violence, language, and the status of poetry and drama. Throughout she takes care to situate the play within the historical and cultural context of fifth-century Athens. This provocative book will interest classicists and students of drama and literary theory; transliteration of Greek words and a glossary of key terms make it accessible to all.
Customer Reviews:
Utterly Horrid - Deserves Fewer than Zero Stars.......2001-12-15
Barbie attempts to impose the ultimate in moral relativist "readings" on Euripides, as if Euripides did not have a brain and a will and a purpose -- as well as an intended message, moral, and view of the world. Goff never comes right out and says it (despite all that beautifully written King's English -- funny how a work so subversive in theme adheres so strictly to grammatical standards), but her implication is that everything Euripides had to say about everything was a function of Raw Barbarian Male Aggression. There are snippets of truth in her "reading," no doubt -- but she misses and ignores and twists and destroys so much more. This is one more work in a steady stream of nihilistic nonsense oozing from American liberal arts departments. One shudders to think that Barbie probably recites this stuff to students in her classes, too. A reader using this toxic waste to appreciate Euripides' work is virtually guaranteed to never pick up another Greek play. So, yes, do the world a favor and buy a copy of this book -- and then toss it out after recognizing its deep silliness.
