The word tropics conjures images of swaying palm fronds and white sand beaches. That is surely part of the picture, writes Italian science journalist Marco Lambertini in this fine environmental handbook, but keeping such a view is "reductive and risky," ignoring as it does the low temperatures, aridity, choppy seas, fogs, torrential rains, and general unpleasantness of so many tropical areas. Lambertini offers a fine survey of the many environments that make up "the tropics," which include not only coral reefs and monkey-dense hardwood forests, but also deserts and savannas, areas both rich in flora and fauna and almost unpopulated. Lambertini stresses the diversity of life in the world's tropical areas, offering accounts of several indicator species from aricas to zebras. He also observes that this diversity of life is in ever-increasing peril, and that "we are faced with a life or death struggle for the conservation of tropical wildlife and their habitats." The destruction of the tropics--whereby, for instance, only five percent of Brazil's original Atlantic forest now stands, many of the world's coral reefs have disappeared, and deserts have encroached on once-fertile grasslands--is not merely unfortunate, Lambertini insists; it also amounts to the depletion of an irreplaceable genetic bank. His guidebook makes for a catalog of the riches the tropics hold, and a highly useful reference. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

Every year hundreds of thousands of travelers head for the Tropics to thrill to the raucous call of a howler monkey booming across the emerald cathedral of a rainforest, or to marvel at a brightly colored clown fish gliding fearlessly among the stinging tentacles of a sea anemone on a coral reef. Ranging from South and Central America to Africa, Southeast Asia, Oceania, and the Caribbean, A Naturalist's Guide to the Tropics provides engaging overviews of the geology, climate, soils, plants, animals, and major ecosystems of the Tropics. The book is beautifully illustrated throughout with color plates, photographs, and drawings.
Whether you're a first-time visitor or a veteran of many trips, this convenient guidebook can help you plan your vacation and serve as a knowledgeable companion to answer the many questions that may arise during the course of your journey. Why are tropical birds and fishes so colorful? What is an atoll, and how do they form? Why are tropical soils red and sterile, while rainforests are lush and green? Why does Madagascar have lemurs but not monkeys? Special features of the book include chapters on the conservation status of the Tropics and how to prepare with "caution without obsession" for tropical dangers such as infectious diseases and charging rhinoceroses.
The first comprehensive introduction to the natural history of the Tropics worldwide, A Naturalist's Guide to the Tropics has been completely revised and updated by the author and the translator to reflect the most current information available.

* first field guide in English to cover all the world's tropics, not just specific regions or countries
* more than 350 illustrations, many in color
* sturdy flexibound cover and compact size ideal for travelers
* boxes in text define scientific terms or explore side topics in more detail, such as "What Is Biodiversity?" and "Why Is Tropical Fauna So Colorful?"
* discusses tropical dangers and precautions to cope with them, such as vaccinations to obtain and foods to avoid

4 out of 5 stars Interesting (sans the "planet Earth is doomed" bit) .......2007-09-15

This book handles the broad topic of tropical ecology well. I especially enjoyed the maps showing the distribution of earth's tropical flora and fauna. The author seems knowledgeable enough and his observations harmonize well with those of other authors who have tackled the same subject. The text wasn't exactly spell-binding, but I was more interested in the information anyway.

As I progressed into the book the decidedly unorganic scent of an eco-elitist began to emerge. The author stopped hinting at mankind's planet-killing ways near the end of the book and donned the mantle of a unabashed treehugging lobbyist. Unexpected? Not really. Annoying? YES! Yeah, we all get it! We are hurting the earth! Please, for the love of all living things, can someone write a book on ecology without the obligatory "Look I AM a naturalist and I say we take care of our fragile planet" rant?!

If you intend to read this book for information about the tropics, you probably won't be disappointed. If you're hoping to avoid self-declared manifestos on the environment, skip the "Evil megacorporations of economically well-off nations will be responsible for the death of us all!" parts.

            4 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2005-12-31

This series focusses on three Wiccan girls trying to make it through normal life while all the while using and running into magic. This series was particularly special to me as I am a young Wiccan myself and to see a book like this that shows Wicca in such a lighthearted and acceptable manner is simply wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars The Beginning of the End..........2003-10-05

            '"And so it ends."'

Now, I'm not usually one to waste my time soaking up the end of a series, but "Initiation" by Isobel Bird was one exception. I have to admit, this was one dramatic and overall astounding conclusion to "Circle of Three," and I would reccomend it to anyone. Whilst Cooper and Jane are busy with their 'Bitter Pills' plans, Kate and Annie are undergoing thier final initiation as witches. Cooper, who didn't make the initiation class, seems to be wasting away her sorrow in her hard-rock guitar; but Kate and Annie are more interested in which coven they will join and what the right choice is. Little does the circle of three know, their choices will soon merge into one as the conclusion of the fifteen-book series comes to an end. And as it draws near, Annie fears that the circle of three she, Kate and Cooper had formed is really going to break up after all. But the end is full of surprises, like Cooper's decision to become initiated and the forming of a brand new coven. Like I say, this is truly the beginning of the end. I hope to see more books by Ms. Bird, but if not, I'm glad I read the Circle of Three. This is truly excellent for all young Wiccans who need a good read, a good laugh, and time to enjoy themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent series of teen novels on eclectic Wicca.......2002-08-08

I must say, this entire series has been surprisingly informative and interesting (there are even a couple of ideas that I'm interested in adapting for public rituals). I'm a 29 years old practitioner or Wicca (I've been studying for 12 years), and although these books are aimed at teenagers, I've read them all, and so have many of my friends (ages 22 to 35).

As the series evolves, we see the personal growth and studies of three teenage friends as they struggle with adolescence and with their increasing interest in the pagan religion which is Wicca. This series presents their experiences as members of a study group organised by an eclectic coven (a year and a day of studies, possibly leading to initiation) and as members of their own "circle of 3", how their friendships and personal goals develop with time, how they become stronger, more mature individuals, how their families and friends react to their interest in this path, etc. The books are informative in the ways of eclectic Wicca, if I had children I'd feel completely comfortable in letting them read them, there is no gratuitous sex or violence or any such thing. Very well done, highly recommended!

            5 out of 5 stars A powerful conclusion.......2002-05-09

I was glad to see an extra-large book to tie up the loose ends in this series in a great finale. It lessened the blow of this possibly being the end of the series.

The whole series is well written, character driven, mostly realistic, and well worth reading.

            5 out of 5 stars A Great Finale~maybe!.......2002-04-27

1st of all i would just like to say i am NOT 1, i am 14, there was just a problem with the regular review form. Lol. But anyway, this last book was a great finale for The Circle Of Three series. I can't believe it's over. It may not be, but there's usually a title for the upcoming book and even a passage, but it was not there. Basically, Kate, Annie, and Cooper have to deal with their Initiation...Kate will have to decide between her life in wicca, or being in Wicca for an old flame...Annie must choose the right coven also, but the upcoming wedding and her new sisters will show her what's the real path, one which will let her find her way....Cooper was not offered initiation in The Challenge Box, but finds renewed faith, but it may be broken once more... Each witch-to-be will together face a shocking revelation, including facing rejection...but the question is for all of you who haven't read the book yet, will they find the light to their destined paths? This may be confusing, but once you read Initiation, you'll understand. This was a great read, which i recommend to all who have read the others in the series. Buy it soon!

Monitoring Ecological Impacts provides the tools needed to design assessment programs that can reliably monitor, detect, and allow management of human impacts on the natural environment. The procedures described are well-grounded in inferential logic, and the statistical models needed to analyse complex data are given. Step-by-step guidelines and flow diagrams provide clear and useable protocols which can be applied in any region of the world, a wide range of human impacts, and any ecosystem. In addition, real examples are used to show how the theory can be put into practice.

4 out of 5 stars Handy, easy to read, and durable version of the Periodic Table.......2006-09-13

In an age when you can do a quick web search and come up with hundreds of versions of the periodic table of the elements, why get a stand alone chart for personal use? Well, there are a number of good reasons. There are times when you are reading, studying, or taking a test when you can use a printed resource and don't have immediate access to a computer. Presentations of the periodic table vary in scope and purpose, even when the layout is the same. Sometimes the extra information can be daunting for students and at other times they leave out key information. If you can find a good online periodic table, you should stay with it. Pearson publishes one on Factmonster that is interactive and is quite good.

However, for personal study this is a handy resource. It is small enough to fit in your notebook or can even act as a bookmark in your chemistry text. Yes, I know your textbook has a periodic table inside the front cover, but flipping back there while trying to read can be a pain. Having this right with you can be quite handy.

The back of this chart has a list of conversion factors and relationships as well as a list of fundamental constants. It is not meant as a comprehensive resource, but as a handy quick reference. For that I recommend it to those interested in having a durable, easy to read, and informative personal sized periodic table of the elements.

                  1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money.......2003-01-17

I ordered this to have as a reference for my teenagers, who had been curious about what some chemical abbreviations stood for. THIS DOESN'T NAME THE ELEMENTS !!! It gives the abbreviation, atomic number and atomic mass arranged in typical format, but if you want to know what "Hf" or "Tb" or any of the others mean, you're out of luck.

This guy has quite a story to tell. It's nice to read a journal of an another brain tumor patient. Having a brain tumor myself, this book makes me realize how good my situation really is. His story is inspiring, and I really like his writing style. I read this book in one night.

5 out of 5 stars Worth reading if you know someone with a brain tumor........2006-02-07

I read this book when my mother was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme IV. It was very quick and easy reading, which is good during a time like this. It tells what this guy experienced from the beginning symptoms, through surgery, and recovery. It helped to reaffirm that what the doctors were doing for my mom was the "standard" procedure for this type of cancer, and helped to familiarize me with the terminology that I was both hearing from the doctors as well as reading simultaneously in this book. Although people experience different symptoms from this cancer, much of it is the same. Because this guy was able to write about what he experienced, it helped me to understand more of what my mom was going through... with the loss of words and thoughts, inability to do simple everyday activities that we take for granted, the craniotomy, and treatments - radiation and chemo. I would recommend this book to anyone who is caring for someone with this tumor.. It's affordable, quick reading, and it will help give you more insight on what the patient is going through.
I would like to say that my mom has undergone 2 craniotomies, she is walking again, becoming easier to understand, and has the best attitude towards life. She's got too much to live for to let this little thing called "cancer" get in her way. :-)

If you or a loved one is dealing with a tumor or a cancer this is the book to help you get through it. It details the authors personal problems and medical problems. It is a real page turner and very informative. A recommended read for everyone!!!

3 out of 5 stars An Essential Book on the P-47.......1999-05-31

Warren M. Bodie's book on the Seversky aircraft and the P-47 Thunderbolt is a very well researched work that contains a lot of surprising material and corrects errors present in older sources. The book is primarily a technical and development history, although it includes a summary of combat operations. It is rich both in text and in pictures, and makes an effort to put things in their historical context. The author has strong opinions and expresses them with a lot conviction. A weakness of the book is the meandering writing style, which imparts a certain repetitiveness and a lack of chronological order. It is also clear that while the author has all the facts about the P-38, P-47, Lockheed, Seversky and Republic, he makes some serious errors when stepping outside this field, including some that could easily have been prevented. Perhaps some corrections are in order in the next edition --- but this one is certainly worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars THE reference book about the P-47 - period........1998-09-01

This thoroughly researched book traces the industrial/developement history of the P-47 and its Seversky predecessors. The author gives very interesting insight on the decision making process within the Air Force and the industry. Of course such a detailled book about the development and technical aspects of the P-47 precludes the author from going in depth in the operationnal history of the type, but that's what most other books about the "Jug" are covering. Especially foreign service of the type is lacking, a trait typical of most american authors. To help prospective buyers, I would compare this excellent work about the P-47 with an 1980 book about the P-51 by former 8th AF ace Leonard "Kit" Carson, titled Pursue and Destroy. M. Bodie has also written a very good book about the P-38. Paper quality and photo reproduction are excellent. To sum up, if you're interested in the P-47, buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding reference of the mighty P-47 Thunderbolt.......1998-07-21

I have been studying the great fighter planes of the WWII European Theatre for over 15 years. Based on historical facts and pilot stories, I have come to admire the Thunderbolt. It is the forgotten fighter, in my opinion, for the more glamorous P-51. However, Warren Bodie shows how the "Jug" came into being as well as how its pilots used it. While his writing style may wonder a bit, his incredibly factual presentation of the greatest fighter-bomber of all time will answer every question you ever had about the Thunderbolt.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE difinitive work on on Republic's "JUG".......1998-07-15

As a "JUG" buff of many years, I can say hands down this book is the most comprehensive resource on the development and war-time history of the P-47! A must read for the Thunderbolt fanatic!

                        Book Description

This intensely interesting—and troubling—book is the product of a lifetime of reflection and study of democracy. In it, John Lukacs addresses the questions of how our democracy has changed and why we have become vulnerable to the shallowest possible demagoguery.
Lukacs contrasts the political systems, movements, and ideologies that have bedeviled the twentieth century: democracy, Liberalism, nationalism, fascism, Bolshevism, National Socialism, populism. Reflecting on American democracy, Lukacs describes its evolution from the eighteenth century to its current form—a dangerous and possibly irreversible populism. This involves, among other things, the predominance of popular sentiment over what used to be public opinion. This devolution has happened through the gigantic machinery of publicity, substituting propaganda—and entertainment—for knowledge, and ideology for a sense of history. It is a kind of populism that relies on nationalism and militarism to hold society together.
Lukacs’s observations are original, biting, timely, sure to inspire lively debate about the precarious state of American democracy today.

                        1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2007-04-02

The author seems to have some good ideas and I agree with much of what I think he is trying to say. The problem is the man can't seem to maintain a train of thought long enough to complete a decent sentence. I've never seen so much paraphrasing in a book. It's almost as if he's trying to write in stream of consciousness. I had an easier time reading Ulysses by James Joyce! Where was the editor?

He really lost me when he started bringing Darwin into scene. Darwin was not a social scientist. His writings have been used by social scientists in order to support their thesis or disparage anothers. This is wrong and very unfair to Darwin and evolutionary science in general. Most of these types have never actually read Darwin. They are simply transmuting what others have written about the subject.

                        Don't bother.

                        2 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Effort.......2005-10-22

This book would be more aptly titled "Musings of a Disappointed Old Man." Lukacs now belongs to the negativist school of the modern man that has been exemplified by Allan Bloom and Jacques Barzun in recent years. It's hard to believe this book was written by the man who wrote the then insightful "A New History of the Cold War."
Among other flaws, this book was in bad need of an editor. It reads like a rough draft of random musings and asides that never got consolidated into coherent thoughts and theses. Lukacs' vast knowledge of history seems to have overwhelmed his ability to coherently analyze and express his current fears, frustrations, and disillusionment with the state of man. He apparently sees the Roman Catholic Church as the last best hope.
A sad effort from a once fine scholar and innovative thinker on 20th century history.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Study for the Future of The World As We Know It........2005-06-28

This critical analysis of U. S. politics and "democracy" is written by an eminent historian who devoted many years to writng a six-volume history about Churchill and his importance to the outcome of World War II. He wrote FIVE DAYS IN LONDON (in May 1940) pivotal to the success of WWII in favor of the Allies, and THE DUEL between Churchill and Hitler.

He is a man who lives and breathes history. He feels that the current form of American democracy which had its roots in the 18th Century have changed drastically to a dangerous form of populism. History today is written for entertainment or propaganda and depends more on public opinion than on actual facts.

The machinery of publicity (the media) has caused the United States president to rely on nationalism and militarism to hold our society together. The decline of privacy (Big Brother cameras everywhere, even out on the Interstates which traverse this country) and the rise of criminality make for a dark future, full of fear and hatred.

The division between the two major political parties, Democrats and Republicans, make for a bad choice of bedfellows. The very material order (or disorder) of the world is not at all the dundament but the consequence of what many people think. Mayors, public officials, government workers, Governors, Presidents -- all are in power because of their popularity and not their ability. In America, you get where you are by who you are or who you know. It's sad what this world has become since 1945 when our future seemed secure. Nothing is secure today and 9/11 proved it. Those terrorists died in the plane crashes, but there are double that amount in U. S. A. today waiting for their turn to be suicide bombers, whether in planes, trains, or public transit.

3 out of 5 stars The Degeneration of Democracy into Populist Nationalism.......2005-05-07

Those expecting a thorough, organized treatment of democracy and populism will be somewhat disappointed by this book. Lukacs, an eminent conservative historian, wanders disjointedly over the political landscape of the last two hundred years making any number of observations, assertions, and rather blunt criticisms of other chroniclers of the era, including historian Richard Hoftstadter and Hannah Arendt, the author of "The Origins of Totalitarianism," described as a "muddled and dishonest writer." A burden is placed on the reader to sift through the fragmented commentary to separate substance from overstatement and inconsistencies and to locate, if not construct, main themes.

The subtitle, "Fear and Hatred," gives some indication of the direction that the author is headed. It is thought processes and psychology that are important in a mass democracy: "our concern must be with how people think, how they choose to think, including how they are influenced or impressed to think and speak." Fear and hatred are central concerns. He rejects the Freudian notion that they operate subconsciously, rather than being purposely chosen.

The author tags 1870 as a time of fundamental rearrangement of political forces. The rise and attraction of socialism and nationalism basically shoved aside the older liberal, conservative debate, though that debate lingers today. Interestingly, and probably correctly, he points out that none of the political parties in the 19th century US were truly conservative. The rise of socialism, or the Welfare state, merely reflected the new Darwinian perspective of constant social "progress." The author's assertion that the entire globe is now socialist is not much of an overreach.

But the emergence of populist nationalism is more relevant to understanding the 20th century. Nationalism is not synonymous with patriotism; it is a mutation of patriotism. It is "aggressive" and based on a vague "myth of the people" that takes on feverish religious overtones. Nationalists are anti liberal. They take offense at liberal open-mindedness and tolerance, especially for foreigners. For the author, 1914 represents the time when the weakness of socialism relative to nationalism finally became clear. "... class consciousness melted away in the heat of nationalist emotions and beliefs."

Populism, at least as it has evolved in the last century, is a mutant form of democracy. Tocqueville already saw mass conformity to public opinion as a problem for democracy. But Lukacs is more concerned with the manipulation of public opinion. The media of 1914 pandered to nationalistic sentiments. In addition, the US government got into the propaganda act by creating departments to promote the War. Ultimately, "nationalist hatred [trumped] class hatred."

Hitler clearly demonstrates where populist nationalism can wind up. He fanned hatreds for the "enemies of German nationalism both within and without." The author explains that the old "Right," at one time, feared popular sovereignty. But that has been reversed in this century as the Right has assumed the populist nationalism mantle, appealing to and creating a fierce nationalism within populations. And that is the basis of the Right's advantage over the Left - a main point of the book. The Left and Democrats have never been sufficiently nationalistic.

It is a conceit within the Right that they support a higher morality. The author, a true conservative, is having none of that. Clearly, the cultural products of the US have smashed social and moral standards worldwide. The author decries the "stunning transformations of personal and sexual and civilizational behavior" within American culture. So-called conservatives have been prime promoters of technology and "progress," and more importantly economic policies of neoliberalism, which give global corporations a free hand in upsetting the social order by such actions as offshoring jobs without the hindrance of environmental or labor regulations. The impacts on families, whom conservatives claim to value much, and communities have been profound, not to mention on the environment.

Surprisingly, the author has a blind eye about other aspects of capitalism. For example, his claim that 20th century nationalists shared with socialists a dislike, even hatred, for international financiers and capitalists. Or his contention that corporate executives do not form a new aristocracy. What is a plutocracy (which surely exists in the US) other than a moneyed aristocracy? There is little evidence that the populist Republican Party favors restrictions on international capital. At one time the Pat Buchanan wing of the Republicans showed some interest in those areas. On the other hand, the minimal social disapproval of white collar crime is noted - surely, a conservative contradiction.

The author is concerned that parliamentary democracy is at risk in the US due to a large deficit in the free flow of useful information. The press no longer performs a role of assimilating and reflecting the political views of the public. As with other media, its focus is on entertainment. He is especially concerned about the potential for the public being manipulated by television, which now dominates news and entertainment, through the subtle distortion of words and speech. There are only limited avenues for unaltered oppositional voices.

As the author suggests, there has been a degeneration of democracy into nationalist populism in the US. There is one slight reference to the original populists in the US, the farmer revolt in the South in the late 19th century, who correctly identified oppression by business and government and attempted to ameliorate their situation through economic and political means - a true democratic effort. The measures taken to suppress that movement were extreme, and not discussed by the author.

The author misses the opportunity to reflect on the difficulties that truly ground-up democratic action faces. It seems that pseudo-democracy, or the kind of populism that the author discusses, is really all that can be "successful." But that is a result of manipulation by elites. It is not deliberative, and is usually fanatical. He does recognize that spectacular sporting events encourage "accumulations of hatred," which can be exercised politically.

Unsurprisingly, the author can only hope for some sort of revival of true conservatism. The chances of the Left successfully combating the forces of the Right are virtually nil.

                        3 out of 5 stars self-indulgent.......2005-03-01

Imagine: a civil war re-enactment - a cannon is loaded and fired - a startling flash and boom - but when the smoke clears, nothing has really happened.

Similarly, when John Lukacs announces that the two elected monarchs of the modern world are the Pope and the President of the United States, or that Hitler was not a dictator, but a populist, you might think "Wow! what an original thought!" But after a little reflection, you realize that there is really nothing there: no information, no insight, no new way of looking at things. It's all fake, a simulacrum of historical thinking.

There is no new research here. Many of the ideas are not even fake original: for instance, everybody has long known that the new conservatives aren't conservative in the old sense. The familiar theme of how democracy is at risk from demagoguery is not really elaborated or explored in any depth.

If you find yourself agreeing with Lukacs, you haven't understood the book. A lot of it is plain wrong: Hitler was a dictator, and was not a populist, and his power was not based on popular sovereignty. Lukacs' proposal that right wing politics is based on hate, and the left-wing politics on fear, falls apart in his hands. And he shows no understanding of Darwin or Freud.

But you have to stop arguing with every quirky definition and out-of-the-blue digression (Women are the potential salvation of the world, through their special capacity for love? Gee...) This isn't a reasoned work of scholarship, it's an existential outburst.

So, why a three? I guess an intelligent, hard-working writer like Lukacs earns the right to let his hair down, finally, and publish a totally self-indulgent rant. We get to see all the chaotic stuff going on in his head, that doesn't get expressed in his more disciplined work.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent outdoor adventure.......2007-02-22

Made me want to canoe through the wilderness... and not! Beautiful country, the trip of a lifetime, but pretty harsh at times. I'd read this years ago and just bought the paperback of it. I recently saw an article about taking their family to Yellowstone, written by these authors and published in a parenting magazine. The great writing in that article and knowledge of "things outdoors" reminded me of this book. I had to read it again. It's that good.

                                5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book.......1998-01-04

I read this book the same week that I read Paddleing the Vermillion Sea and Running the Amazon. Although Water and Sky will never get the coverage and sales of the other two, it is vastly the superior book. Without the angst and pretense of Waterman or Kane, Kesselheim tells a warm story of adventure, conducted on a human scale by credible people. This one deserves to survive as a classic.

5 out of 5 stars This is the very cadence of paddling in the far north.......1997-11-29

For those of you who yearn to paddle in the barrenlands of Canada this book is for you. Alan and Marypat paddled down the Peace River and wintered over on the shores of Lake Athabasca. They traveled north on the Dubawant and Kazan Rivers to finish in Baker Lake. Danger - if you read this in the winter months it will lead to severe cabin fever!
