Book Description
This comprehensive, illustrated guide explores the natural history of the Southern Rocky Mountains -- a rugged area that includes the Sangre de Cristo, Sawatch, Never Summer, San Juan, and other spectacular ranges.
Drawing from the field work of hundreds of scientists as well as her own observations, Audrey Benedict describes the geography of the region, its fascinating geologic story, its climate and weather, and its plant and animal communities. The region's major ecosystems, from the shortgrass prairie and scrublands to woodlands and forests, grasslands and meadows, wetlands and aquatic environments, and finally alpine tundra, are described in detail. The emphasis throughout is on the unique adaptations of the major species of plants, mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians and how these organisms interact within their environment.
More than a hundred line drawings and black-and-white photographs complement the text, contributing to this guide's usefulness both at home and in the field. Anyone visiting this scenic and richly diverse region will find the book an invaluable resource.
Customer Reviews:
Very complete, strong example in this category.......2005-02-05
Benedict draws from countless sources and personal experience in this book to assemble the most complete handheld book on the Southern Rockies. If you live in Colorado and consider yourself a naturalist, this should already be on your shelf, and in your backpack as you trek around. I use mine so much I had to tape the cover to protect it. The writing is crisp and factual, yet engrossing. Coverage is complete: from geology to ornithology, botany to meteorology, it's all here in ample detail for the interested lay person. Highly recommended... one of the best in class.

Book Description
On the afternoon when Angel Allegria arrives at the Poloverdos’ farmhouse, he kills the farmer and his wife. But he spares their child, Paolo–a young boy who will claim this as the day on which he was born. Together the killer and the boy begin a new life on this remote and rugged stretch of land in Chile.
Then Luis Secunda, a well-to-do and educated fellow from the city descends upon them. Paolo is caught in the paternal rivalry between the two men. But life resumes its course . . . until circumstances force the three to leave the farm. In doing so, Angel and Luis confront their pasts as well as their inevitable destinies–destinies that profoundly shape Paolo’s own future.

Can a killer love?
Is Angel's murder strike just what Paolo needs to gain his strength?
When Angel snatches the lives of Paolo's parents, Angel takes Paolo into his world. When an intelligent traveler discovers their house on the very edge of Chile, he teaches Angel how to love.
The first trip Paolo ever takes turns out to be a suicidal nightmare.
What kind of trip does this turn out to be?
THE KILLER'S TEARS tells a wonderful story of the love between a young child and a murderer. It has a wonderful word choice and is very well put together. A great read!!!

A different sort of story.......2006-04-08
How often does this scenario occur - a man comes and murders your parents, spares you, and then decides to become your father? This story is odd. The murderer and child grow to love one another. The murderer is consumed with guilt and love at the same time. Eventually he must pay for the sins of his past. I feel better at least that the boy in the story seems to grow up into a well-adjusted man, and learns to love a good woman. In some strange way, the love of the killer made the boy's life better, and his life as a man reflects that.

Book Description
Due to the reinforced risk and safety-analysis of industrial plants in chemical and energy-engineering there has been increased demand in industry for more information on thermo- and fluiddynamic effects of non-equilibria during strong transients. Therefore, the 'Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft' initiated a special research program focusing on the study of transient phenomena in multiphase systems with one or several components. This book describes macroscopic as well as microscopic transient situations. A large part of the book deals with numerical methods for describing transients in two-phase mixtures. New developments in measuring techniques are also presented.

The Princeton Review realizes that scoring high on the AP Physics B & C Exams is very different from earning straight A’s in school. We don’t try to teach you everything there is to know about physics–only the strategies and information you’ll need to get your highest score. In Cracking the AP Physics B & C Exams, we’ll teach you how to
·Use our preparation strategies and test-taking techniques to raise your score
·Focus on the topics most likely to appear on the test
·Test your knowledge with review questions for each physics topic covered
This book includes 2 full-length practice tests, one each for Physics B and Physics C. All of our practice questions are just like those you’ll see on the actual exam, and we explain how to answer every question.
Customer Reviews:
Five stars for Physics B; Three stars for Physics C.......2007-06-24
There is very little to add to what the previous reviewers have said regarding the Physics B portion of the material in this book. It is indeed an excellent study guide for that exam.
I would rank the book a little lower on its coverage of the Physics C material. Let me preface the following by saying that I bought this and several other textbooks, guides, and multiple choice questions, and free response questions (the latter two available either for free or for purchase off the AP services web site). In addition, I attempted to teach my daughter the subject on our own time given the complete lack of effective instruction by her physics teacher at school. It became clear to me that the Physics C exam is written to test "cleverness". The Physics B part can be passed by sadly only knowing the right formula and how to plug in the numbers - this cannot be done on the Physics C exam. The Physics C exam is not about complicated formulas nor long derivations. You need to get the answer within one or two steps - if not, you are on the wrong track. In order to do this, you need to have seen a similar type of problem before. This book doesn't do that effectively on its own - but if you've got a decent physics instructor, the combination of both will suffice for the exam.
It is clear that the book is primarily concerned with Physics B and supplements a little extra (as needed) in the mechanics and E&M section for the harder Physics C exam. As a stand alone "text", it will fall short of the mark for the tougher Physics C exam. In summary, if you are going at this alone, buy this and the Physics C guide authored by Mooney. If your in a decent class, then this book will suffice.
another compliment.......2007-05-24
This book is great:
+lessons are concise but very thorough
+all examples and questions have answers and most have explanations.
+it's easy to distinguish between [B] and [C] topics
-But be sure to check central for a thorough list of topics on the test
-There are a few mis-edits or explanation with computational errors. These are rare but can give you a headache for a few minutes until you figure out the error.
Conclusion: If you read a section, and comprehend it, you won't be baffled by any question in that topic come test day (I mean it).
Great Book With a Few Shortcomings.......2007-05-15
The book was everything I expected it to be. I particularly liked how it taught a topic that was immediately followed by a sample problem. Comparing this book to the Kaplan one, I found this book to translate rather difficult concepts into much easier ones. The one thing that I would change is a stronger Gravitation section. This seemed to be my weakest area out of all of them.
At times too thorough, at times too sparse.......2007-05-15
This book's strength lies in the many practice questions it offers, and the thorough explanations of each that it offers. However, sometimes new content is thrown into the body of the questions, so to make sure you have mastered the all of the material you sometimes need to do all of the questions in addition to reading the text to make sure you are familiar with everything that the AP tests. Also, some sections of the book (most notedly the ones on electricity and magnetism) go into too much detail, while others (on waves, fluid dynamics, and nuclear physics) I did not felt went into enough detail for me to feel comfortable that I knew the material backwards and front. Another flaw of the book is that there are an incredible amount of typos- sometimes its just annoying misspellings in the text, but more often than not they are flaws in the practice questions- just minor things, but enough to take precious time away from last-minute cramming. I also caught an algebraic mistake in one of the explanations to the questions, that resulted in them providing the incorrect answer. I am giving it four stars, though, because in the end it did prepare me well for the test (I took Physics B) In fact, there were exactly two multiple choice questions that were almost exact repeats of problems this book has, which was a pleasant surprise.
Great study guide for a tough test.......2007-03-26
This book was required for my daughter's physics class last year. The teacher of her AP Physics class has a very high pass rate on the AP Physics exams with the majority of her students scoring 4 or 5. She attributes this success to this book. My daughter scored a 5 on both the B and C tests. Now my son is prepping to take the AP Physics B exam and once again this book is required. I didn't even pause when he asked for a new copy of the latest edition.
Update: My son recently competed in a regional scholastic competition and took first place in physics. He's a junior taking the AP Physic B class and took first place against second year (AP Physics C) students. He used this book to prepare for the competition.

The Raymond Chandler Papers brings together the correspondence and other previously uncollected writing of America's undisputed master of crime fiction and creator of the iconic private eye Phillip Marlowe, revealing all aspects of the great artist's powerful personality and broad intellectual curiosity. Featuring a selection of Chandler's previously unpublished early writings -- including a gripping piece about his combat experiences in World War I -- and an abandoned profile of the infamous mobster "Lucky" Luciano, The Raymond Chandler Papers is a must-have for all true fans, and an important contribution toward understanding the life and work of the enigmatic man Evelyn Waugh called "the greatest living American novelist." "[M]akes clear the private Chandler was just as powerful, and his wit was as cutting as Marlowe's...." -- Roger Lowenstein, The Wall Street Journal" "For the Chandler fan, The Raymond Chandler Papers ... is a treasure-trove." -- David Lehman, The New York Times Book Review
Customer Reviews:
Intelligent, Hilarious, and Sometimes Sad .......2006-08-08
Raymond Chandler wrote his letters, for the most part, late at night after a day of drinking. The letters provide an insight into the man who created the quintessential fictional PI, Philip Marlowe, and elevated what he called formula writing into a class of literature recognized by his contemporaries as art. The letters range from his laugh-out-loud take on science fiction--"Did you ever read what they call science fiction? It's a scream. It's written like this: I checked out K19 on Adabaran III, and stepped out through the crummaliote hatch..." to the sadness he experienced when his wife of more than thirty years passed away. I enthusiastically recommend this book. Even people who hadn't had the good fortune to read his classic mystery novels will be highly entertained.
Repeat material.......2001-07-18
I was surprised that so much material from a previous collection ('Selected letters of Raymond Chandler', ed. McShane, 1981)is repeated in this book. Maybe I didn't do my homework, but I don't recall this fact being mentioned in promotions or reviews. When you're paying (as I did) [price] for a book, it's disappointing to keep coming across previously published letters. Chandler's writing is still great, but I'm sure he'd have something to say about this practice.
So good it'll make a bishop kick in a stained glass window.......2001-06-29
What a fun collection this is! Another book of letters by another famous author I read recently was embarrassingly boring--it never should have been printed. But Chandler's style and pithy observations make this collection a treat. Though a loner and a lush, he maintained cordial relations with his colleagues, and his comments on the passing scene are keen. From acerbic observations on life in southern California, to wry descriptions of his cat's habits, to sometimes generous and sometimes acerbic appraisals of agents, publishers, and fellow writers, his prose is absolutely sparkling.
His coverage of Oscars night in the mid-Forties for The Atlantic magazine is a masterpiece of scorn for the glitterati. Around the same time he accurately dismisses the new medium of television's supposed threat to the book industry. People who tune in to watch "fourth-rate club fighters rub noses on the ropes are not losing any time from book reading." Just as frequently, Chandler comes across as thoughtful and a good friend--not at all Marlowe-ish, though you get the feeling he could be a tough guy if need be. If you read only one book of collected letters of a famous author this year, etc.
Poet Laureate of the Loner.......2001-05-25
Chandler had probably never seen most of the people with whom he corresponded in his letters, but his opinions on everything from the plight of the writer in Hollywood to the merits of housecats are not only witty and memorable, but also indicate an extremely thoughtful man and first-rate analytical mind. The only problem I had with Hiney's editing is that a bit more could have been explained--although some of the context of each letter is provided, additional information would have been helpful. I believe I would have appreciated Chandler's observations even more had this been the case.
Book Description
Using state papers and manuscripts of the period, Anne Chambers reveals the woman behind the legend and presents one of history's most remarkable women against the turbulent political environment of her time. What emerges is a woman who challenges our predisposed sense of convention, who, over four hundred years ago, was one of the first women to break the mold and make a unique contribution to history.
Customer Reviews:
Grace's Biography.......2007-08-24
Anne Chambers is the authority on Granuaile O'Malley, and she has written the definitive scholarly work in this biography on her.
Inspiring!.......2007-02-18
Anne Chambers' book provides a fascinating and inspiring glimpse into the life of an extraordinary Irish woman. Ms Chambers does an excellent job painting a picture of life in Ireland during the 16th century and the role of women in Ireland through the ages. Anyone traveling to Ireland or interesting in Irish history and the role of women in Irish society will benefit from reading this biography.
Much too dry and fact oriented.......2007-01-04
It's my fault really but this book is just not what I was looking for and I could not get through it.
Granuaile.......2006-07-01
This book was excellently written. To the person who said the anti-christian statements were not true- Let me guess? Your a christian right. Thats the problem with christians, they still deny the truth no matter what. Christianity has always been a man's religion and its the most degrading religion to women and womens rights that has ever existed. I'm glad this author had the guts to be more unique and unconventional to tell the TRUTH. Sorry Christians. I know you never appreciate that.
Beware of the anti-Christian, radical feminist rants in this book.......2006-03-27
I'm an O'Malley, so you can bet I was looking forward to this book. However, with all due respect to the author, at least in the early going, this book contains some anti-Christian, radical feminist claims that put into question the integrity of the rest of it. For instance, on page 17-18 (paperback edition) the author states: "The writings of the early Christian saints, such as Paul, John, Ambrose, Jerome and Augustine, reflected the degraded position of women in Roman society. Augustine wrote of the 'horrible beastliness of women'..."
Not surprisingly, the author can not substantiate this claim and therefore does not give reference to the original source documents in her endnotes as she does with other claims. Don't get me wrong, there is no doubt that the period in which Granuaile lived was male dominated, and at times, shamefully so. However, that doesn't give an author a license to try to right any injustices by yet another injustice.
It's a shame that the apparent good intentions of this author were laid waste by her seeming desire to bash males and Christianity. A biographer should, at the very least, seek, know and uphold the truth, and then tell the good, the bad and the ugly in an even handed way. This isn't too much to ask.

Book Description
As president, Abraham Lincoln received between two hundred and five hundred letters a day—correspondence from public officials, political allies, and military leaders, as well as letters from ordinary Americans of all races who wanted to share their views with him. Here, and in his critically acclaimed volume Dear Mr. Lincoln, editor Harold Holzer has rescued these voices—sometimes eloquent, occasionally angry, at times poetic—from the obscurity of the archives of the Civil War. The Lincoln Mailbag includes letters written by African Americans, which Lincoln never saw, revealing to readers a more accurate representation of the nation’s mood than even the president knew. This first paperback edition of The Lincoln Mailbag includes a new index and fourteen illustrations, and Holzer’s introduction and annotations provide historical context for the events described and the people who wrote so passionately to their president in Lincoln's America.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating slice of Civil War-era life.......2007-05-04
This book, a sequel of sorts to Mr. Holzer's 1993 volume 'Dear Mr. Lincoln,' gathers together even more letters than Americans from all walks of life wrote to the President. Mr. Holzer is a Civil War and Lincoln expert, so he really knows his stuff. As he explains in the foreword, many of the letters he had decided for various reasons to leave out of the original volume are now included here. What makes this collection of letters so special is that many of them were never even seen by President Lincoln, and of the ones seen, many of them were never endorsed or answered. It was for that reason that Mr. Holzer originally thought such letters didn't merit being included, but then he realised the value of including them, particularly since many of them were written by African-Americans. They'd already been ignored once, and didn't deserve to be marginalised and written off again nearly 150 years later for the same reasons they'd been excluded before.
People wrote to President Lincoln because they felt that he was a man of the people and would therefore understand their hopes, dreams, worries, and fears. He didn't appear to them like some out of touch government bigwig who didn't care for the common people; due to his humble origins, they felt as though he were one of them. The subjects include the issue of equal pay for African-American soldiers, old widowed mothers wanting their sons, their sole source of support, back from the Army, a Harvard professor warning him that his oldest son Robert was doing pretty poorly at school, people writing to him about their warfare-related inventions, people (a number of them his relatives) wanting jobs in government (even local government), people who sent gifts (such as socks, scarves, gloves, hams, and flags), people requesting he appear or at least send a speech to their charity balls, congratulations on his re-election, warnings of assassination plots (such as the letter from the less-than-literate West Virginia man who hid inside of a wheat bin to eavesdrop on a conversation between some suspicious characters he worked with), and a man who wanted to start a Lincoln Club (but only on the precondition that the President rescind the Emancipation Proclamation!). Among my favorites were the letter written by Karl Marx (and signed by many of his colleagues) congratulating him on his re-election and lauding him for being such a friend of the common people and freeing the slaves, and the long threatening religious diatribe in verse (so long it was written by two different people) sent all of the way from New Zealand.
Though most people are traditionally used to studying history through the eyes of the ruling classes and the leaders of government, the people who supposedly make history, this book gives a valuable look into what life was like for ordinary American citizens during the Civil War. In many cases, the view of history provided through the eyes of the common people is even more interesting, and far more personal, than studying the exploits of a bunch of heads of state.
Worthy sequel to Holzer's first volume about Lincoln's mail.......1998-07-24
I had bought Harold Holzer's 1993 book "Dear Mr. President" and enjoyed it tremendously. That book dealt with the mail that ordinary and famous people from around the world sent to Abraham Lincoln during his term as U.S. President. Now, Holzer has produced a sequel book, "The Lincoln Mailbag", which contains even more letters written to Lincoln. A large number in this new volume consists of mail Lincoln never even saw, such as correspondence from black Americans. These two books by Holzer offer a fresh, new insight into the world of President Lincoln which is far more interesting than the ordinary, standard Lincoln biographies which seem to pop up every 6 months or so.
Book Description
Since the end of the Cold War, conflict prevention, conflict resolution, peace-keeping and peace-building have risen to the top of the international agenda. The second edition of this hugely popular text charts the development of the field from its pioneers to its contemporary exponents and offers an assessment of its achievements and the challenges it faces in the changed security environment of the early 21st century. The book has been extensively revised and expanded. Existing material has been thoroughly updated and new chapters added on peace-building from below; reconciliation; responding to terror; gender issues; the ethics of intervention; dialogue, discourse and disagreement; culture and conflict resolution; and future directions for the field. The first part offers an original and comprehensive survey of the theory and practice of conflict resolution in contemporary conflicts. It gives a clear picture of the state of the art in preventing, limiting and ending violent conflicts, post-war reconstruction, peace-building and reconciliation. Drawing on up-to-date statistics of conflict and contemporary case studies, the book explores the scope for conflict resolution and also the formidable obstacles it faces. The second part enters into the controversies which have surrounded conflict resolution as it has become part of the mainstream. Addressing critiques of the field, the authors argue that a new form of cosmopolitan conflict resolution is emerging that is neither a marginal and visionary enterprise nor a tool of the powerful, but offers a hopeful means for human societies to transcend and celebrate their differences.Contemporary Conflict Resolution 2nd edition is essential reading for all students of peace and security studies, conflict management, international politics and related disciplines.
Customer Reviews:
Best summary available.......2007-07-24
This book does for the field what Mitchell's "The Structure of International Conflict" did so brilliantly years ago -- it compiles, condenses, and examines the breadth of the field, hitting key topics in a short space without sacrificing depth. I recommend it highly as an introduction to the field for undergraduates, graduate students, academic generalists, or practitioners looking for keys ideas in Conflict Resolution gathered into one place.
supplemental reading.......2003-12-06
The density of the writing reflects, perhaps, the complexity of the topic: dealing with large-scale, deadly conflict (i.e. war). The book covers conflict resolution theory as well as violent conflict escalation and settlement. Case studies are used to good effect in Preventing Violent Conflict, Working in War Zones, and Ending Violent Conflict. If you're interested in this topic, I would recommend this as supplemental reading.
I read this for an introductory, graduate-level class on Conflict Resolution Theory. I think this book would also be useful for students of international relations, industrial psychology, political science, international development, and sociology.

Creating Massachusetts.......2002-03-03
Have you ever wondered why the state of Massachusetts can now support such a high population density? Have our periodic droughts ever piqued your curiosity as to where the water for the city of Boston comes from, when the towns around it must observe water restrictions? What happened to the cholera-laden wells that used to water Massachusetts and keep its population down? This professional report to the people details step-by-step the razing of the pleasant town of Enfield and the creation of a 10-mile-long reservoir in the former Swift River Valley. One accidental effect was the restoration of a wilderness area to which the eagles, long gone from massachusetts, have returned.
A wonderful look at complex human/environmental interaction.......1999-07-22
This small paperback offers a surprisingly detailed look at the history behind the creation of the Quabbin Reservior, created in the 1930s in Western Massachusetts to supply Boston with drinking water. It also takes a look at the state of the reservoir today, which has become an oasis of carefully-managed wilderness in the midst of thickly-settled central New England. Despite a subject that could lead a writer to academia-inspired pedantry, it has an almost storybook quality that makes it as pleasurable to read as it is informative. For anyone interested in a WPA-era tale of a massive, government-sponsored public works project, or with an interest in the politics of environmental preservation and manipulation, it's a good investment.
