Customer Reviews:
Good, but not always accurate.......2007-05-24
This is a handy little book to carry around Yosemite. It's suggested hikes are great.
I did find at least one error. The hike to Sentinel Dome tells you to "continue around the base of the dome on your left (west)" which is virtually impossible. There is no trail there. I finally gave up and hiked back to the trail head and spend the rest of the time down the road at Glacier Point. I found out later that I should have gone right, not left, around the base of the dome.
The hike to Vernal Falls is described well, but the author doesn't mention that from the footbridge at the base of the falls it is 100 yards to the Vernal Falls Viewpoint. I found it out later. If you've gone as far as the footbridge, you might as well enjoy the view slightly further up.
In spite of a few problems, I recommend this book for families and causal hikers.
Good Guide for Our Family.......2007-05-09
This guide was helpful as we planned our family vacation. It gave basic needed info, such as length of hike, type, facilities, etc... with distances and difficiculty easy to understand. A must when doing this with kids who have limited energy. It helped us out!
Mid Week or Off Season Only.......2005-12-13
Visiting Yosemite National Park should top the "to do" list of any outdoor enthusiast in California. It is famous for its scenic wonders: stunning waterfalls, giant sequoia trees, and imposing walls of granite. Unfortunately, most of us can only spare a few days for a trip to this grand park. Multiple short day hikes therefore offer the best approach to exploring all Yosemite has to offer and Suzanne Swedo's book is an excellent place to start.
This book describes some of the classic Yosemite Walks including the trails to Vernal Falls, Glacier Point, Lembert Dome and the Mariposa Grove of Sequoias. These walks are classics because they feature world class scenery, and if you do them on a summer weekend you are likely to share the trail with thousands of tourists from all over the world. Fortunately Swedo also includes hikes to lesser known gems like Chilnualna Falls and the Tuolumne Grove of Sequoias. Still, if you want to avoid the crowds, these trails are best explored mid-week or during the off season. That said, this book, like the trails it describes, provides a lot of bang for the buck. It is well worth the price if you are planning a visit to Yosemite.

Customer Reviews:
Yosemite Day Hikes by Stream Side.......2007-04-20
Robert Stone writes hiking guides with a strong bias towards the typical day hiker. This is fine and his books easily fit the schedules of most national park tourists. While Ms. Scott is correct in noting that some of the longer classics in the park, notably Half Dome and Clouds Rest, are not included in this book, many nice hikes are. These include Lembert Dome, May Lake, and the very strenuous climb to the lip of Yosemite Falls. Hike distances range from 1/2 mile to 10 miles. Approximately 1/3 of the hikes described are between 2 and 3 miles. What separates this guide from the many other day hiking guides available to Yosemite is that Stone has a strong preference for stream side hikes. Walks along Upper Yosemite Creek and to Foresta Falls are simply not found in other guides of this sort.
I've done about half the hikes described by Stone and they are all winners. That said, I cannot give this book five stars. In the first instance, while the maps are well drawn, I prefer north to always be at the top of the page and Stone's maps in this volume are presented in a variety of different settings. I also found that on occasion, the routes he describes are actually longer than the mileage he provides. For example, he begins the hike to the top of Yosemite Falls from the Lodge, not camp 4, but this adds about a mile to the trip. Still, this is a nice book with lots of pleasant diversions from the typical drive through the park. If you are looking for pleasant day hikes, this is a decent volume.
Excellent book for the day hiker.......2006-05-03
While I can agree with SOME of the comments in the reviews above, this book does contain some fairly good hikes.
The hike up Yosemite falls, while not THAT long (8 miles or so) is a fairly good hike, you gain 2700 feet in elevation, and it's at least what I would consider pretty much an all day hike.
The book contains fairly good maps and directions for each hike, I was a bit disappointed with some of the hikes (having lower Yosemite falls listed as a hike is a bit of a joke) but overall this book has been well worth the money.
Only for beginners.......2000-12-28
This is a fine guide if you have never hiked before in a National Park, or if you merely dabble occasionally in the sport. The maps are excellent, as are the trail descriptions, elevation gains and driving directions to the trail heads. Most of these hikes can easily be completed by even the most unfit hiker, children, or eldery people.
However, this is *not* the guide to purchase if you are a serious hiker. I was bemused to see that this book doesn't even contain the quintessential Yosemite hike, Half Dome. Nor does it contain the second-best hike in the park, the Four-and-a-half-mile-trail. In fact, none of the hikes profiled in this Guide are lengthier than a few miles and none would be considered even semi-strenuous. Heed this advice if you're a serious hiker and consult a different guide. But if you're just a casual weekend athlete, or have children in tow, this is a well-written and adequate book for your needs.
A short and informative guide for beginners.......2000-04-05
If a short hike is what you're looking for, this is the right book for you! The hikes are short and accessible. You find all the information you need; the maps are good enough, the pictures exquisite... In short, a good book mainly for beginners. For more challenging hikes or longer backpacking trips, look somewhere else...

Customer Reviews:
A good book for east to moderate day hikes........2004-09-17
This book is indeed a good, quick overview for easy to moderate day hikes in Yosemite. If you are not familiar with the park, it is an excellent quick study on where to spend your time hiking. A few notes of caution: the distances listed can be misleading because the figures are generally for one-way in only, so you will need to double them to get the total distance of the hike in and out. Also, there are some errors in elevation gain. The Happy Isles to Vernal Falls hike (a beautiful one indeed), for example, is listed as a 400 foot elevation gain, but in fact, the hike is a 1,000 foot gain for the 1.6 miles up (and up is the word) trail. Lastly, the book could do a better job of explaining that many waterfalls and some smaller lakes (like Mirror Lake) are likely to be pretty dry by the fall.
If you are a dedicated, serious hiker who wants to scamper well over a dozen miles in a day, climbing 4,800 feet up to the top of Half Dome, then no, this is not your book. For most visitors, it will be a good guide.
Good book for beginning hikers.......2003-09-30
For all the novice hikers out there, this is your book!

Take your laptop with you.......2003-06-26
This is a very useful book. BUY THE PRINT EDITION. The digital version does not allow you to print out the hikes you may want to take - making the digital version completely useless unless you intend on taking your laptop along on the hike. While I can understand that the authors don't want you to print out the book and sell it, by not allowing printing of the hikes you'd like to take you must either memorize the details or buy another book so you don't go off track (or trail as the case may be). Buy the book, preferrably at the park. Yes I know the trails are well marked and all you really need is the information for the trail head, but it would have been really nice to take the 2 or 3 pages of the information along (without the whole book) - which would have made this book really useful instead of a novelty for ebook geeks. I don't like reading books on the computer anyway.

Basic Techniques for Observing and Studying Moths & Butterflies (Memoir No. 5)
William D. Winter Jr.
Manufacturer: The Lepidopterists' Society
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 0930282078 |
Book Description
The Lepidopterists' Society's Basic Techniques manual is a 446-page book (including 82 pages of Appendices) packed with information for the study of Lepidoptera no matter what the reader's interests are. The introductory chapter tells where and when to look for butterflies: best bets are disturbed areas, edge zones (roadsides, railroad verges) and openings in the forest. Since each group of species has it's own habits and flight times, it is best to try different times, seasons and habitats.
Other chapters describe photo techniques, gardening for butterflies, and collecting methods. The latter subject is expanded to show how to obtain maximum scientific information within proper environmental guidelines. Both beginners and experienced students of Lepidoptera will find this book to be a valuable reference.

Practical guide that you take right into the field!.......2003-11-30
This book has some of the best details I've come across in terms of the biology, habitat, predators/hazards, defenses, night observation, and tools of the trade for collecting, rearing, photographing these insects. It's written in layman's terms yet has so much information that you can really learn a lot. There are great pictures throughout (more are B/W but there is a section of color plates with incredibly good detailed pictures). One of the things I really like about this book is that the species of caterpillars, moths/butterflies are relatively common species that I've seen around our gardens here in Virginia so there's immediate relevance. This is definitely a good companion to a field guide as the sub-title suggests. A field guide will give you the highlights while this book will really enable you to dig in deep and learn about these marvelous, beautiful beings.

Nyah Scores With First Novel.......2006-09-19
Freshman author Nyah has scored with her thriller of a novel called "Butterflies in Winter". It is an engaging story of political intrigue and romance set in Minneapolis where the main character, Molly Everest, is an employee of the state's lottery commission. What Molly uncovers raises the horror-level to the heights of a Ira Levin-type conclusion. Will anybody believe her? ( Remember Rosemary's Baby and The Stepford Wives?) There is a parallel plot of romance involving Molly's physical attraction to a mysterious co-worker named Andre. All I can say is the ending will leave you with nightmares! Worth a read!!

Customer Reviews:
book review.......2007-01-12
I ordered this book for my 11-year old daughter, the content was not too mature for her. However, the cover shown online is not the cover on the book that I received. The pastel colors with butterflies was appropriate, the blood-dripping dagger hovering over a white flower all against a black background is not appropriate. I do not judge a book's contents on the cover, but I would not have purchased this for my daughter if I had seen this cover. She won't pick up the book because of the cover and is afraid of the content even after reading the introduction and cover information. I am a disatisfied customer.
Strong on The Textures.......2005-11-09
Tara has done a great job at illustrating exactly how strange a new community, and high school, can be for the unfortunate soul who has to move in the midst of her high school career. The world of boys is portrayed as convincingly alien -- and a little bit dangerous, tempting, &/or thrilling, and the novel slowly builds to a climax that is both sad and artfully drawn.
Parts of the book moved too slowly for me -- I wanted more dialogue and less inner thoughts -- but that may reflect my own biases and not be your experience at all. There may be a male/female thing going on here with that, as Tara does allow you to enter into the thinking of a teen girl with great thoroughness and believability. She clearly remembers it ALL...
The book is a must-read for any teen whose family has uprooted them to move to a new, and supposedly wonderful, community. If you've ever felt like a misfit and all wrong in comparison to the perky people around you, you'll find a lot to relate to in this fine book.
Good book for girls........2005-08-08
For some inexplicable reason, my girlfriend made me read this. She insisted I had to. So, now, to make her happy, I have read it and I am reviewing it, as she requested.
The book is good. I am a guy, though, so it's not really my thing. It's definite chick stuff. I know Amy (my gf) loved it, though. She never shut up about it. So, if you are a girl, read this. If you are a guy, buy it for your girlfriend (and then be prepared to read it yourself. Luckily, it reads quickly.)
All I can say is thank God high school is over.
Read this now!.......2005-08-08
There are a lot of books for teens. Most of them are okay. Nothing great, but interesting. What I like the most about this particular book, and what makes it better, is that the characters aren't perfect. They are real. They act like regular people. The stuff that happens to them happens to normal people. It's what high school is ACTUALLY like.
Seriously awesome! .......2005-08-05
One of my favorite books of all time. All of my friends have borrowed it and read it, and we all love it. If you like Judy Blume, or Sarah Dessen, or Hailey Abbott, you will love this. I am a huge fan and I hope she writes a new book soon.
(Also, I have a huge crush on Tim. I know. I am such a dork, huh?)

Book Description
Fritjof Capra, bestselling author of
The Tao of Physics and
The Web of Life, here explores another frontier in the human significance of scientific ideas—applying complexity theory to large-scale social interaction.
In the 1980s, complexity theory emerged as a powerful alternative to classic, linear thought. A forerunner of that revolution, Fritjof Capra now continues to expand the scope of that theory by establishing a framework in which we can understand and solve some of the most important issues of our time. Capra posits that in order to sustain life, the principles underlying our social institutions must be consistent with the broader organization of nature. Discussing pertinent contemporary issues ranging from the controversial practices of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to the Human Genome Project, he concludes with an authoritative, often provocative plan for designing ecologically sustainable communities and technologies as alternatives to the current economic globalization.
Customer Reviews:
This is an eye opening book.......2006-10-21
As in Capra's other books, he provides a easy to understand and compelling look at living systems. In this book he takes a substantial leap forward in providing a broad based look at the evolution of the field and the impact on systems that we are now experiencing in our world. He also provides examples and references to successful examples of what we can do if we have the will to do so. What a powerful reference and one that I refer to regularly. If there was but one book to understand living systems and how the science has evolved and the impact on our world, please read this book. I can not recommend it more highly.
As wide-ranging and thoughtful as Capra's other books........2005-02-23
This is a valuable successor to Capra's earlier books, all of which seek to discuss matters of critical societal and ecological concern within the framework of scientific analysis and understanding.
The book is in two parts. The first three chapters provide a brilliant summary of current thinking about the nature of life, mind and consciousness, and social reality as an emergent property of social organization seen as a complex adaptive system. It's very good but not easy to read. The remaining four chapters and epilogue can be read separately, although they rely on the theories in the first part. They form a wide-ranging critique of the current governance of organisations and of globalisation, with what amounts to a very detailed case study of how these structures produce the fundamentally dishonest and very dangerous commercial drive to GM foods. The final chapter offers broad guidelines for reshaping the current political and economic framework to bring economic incentives into harmony with the needs of society and the natural world.

One Caution.......2006-12-18
This is a terrific collection of Kafka's stories followed by fine critical essays on a number of them. One caveat: Contrary to the implication in the previous reviewer's comments, this edition does NOT contain the famous long story "Metamorphosis." Had there been a "Search Inside!" option, we would have known that Norton did not "select" this great work to be among the "selected stories."
To read and reread .......2006-01-08
A 'Critical Edition' of this kind provides layers of interpretative richness to add and enhance those the reader makes on their own. Camus said of Kafka that he demands to be read and reread, that in short the essence cannot be given in a single reading or interpretation but that the text is an invitation to open and endless reinterpretation. This characteristic it might be said belongs to all great art both through the generations, and in the heart and mind of the individual at various stages of their lives.
Kafka however with his ambiguous indefinite narratives which at once seem so abstract and so realistic- which tend always toward parable and symbol seems especially suited for the rereading.
The great stories of Kafka, " The Metamorphosis" " The Judgment"
"To a Penal Colony" "The Hunger Artist" "The Country Doctor" all seem to take us on a trip to a place we vaguely fear going to and which we come to understand as not where we want to be yet where we almost preternaturally had to get to.
The depth of this the irony of it holds us in thrall with its terrible beauty.

Powerful........2000-05-02
Franz Kafka is a true genius, there is no other way to put it. The stories are very powerful and "intoxicating" is the oly way I can put it. This book would have gotten a 6, only for the fact that the book lacked more stories and better translating; this is the publisher's fault. This book is a great one to start with for people just picking up on Kafka's works.
