      5 out of 5 stars A gentleman-hunter and naturalist records his thoughts.......1998-03-03

Frederick C. Selous was one of the giants of Vitorian Africa and in this work, written at the urging of President Theodore Roosevelt, he compiles many of his most keen observations about life and wildlife in Africa. Fascinating not only as a period piece, Selous's thoughts are remarkably prescient about the state of game in Africa even today. Though it was written before the rise of the commercial poaching that has ravaged so much of the continent, the book gives an excellent insight into the need to carefully observe, record, and interpret the ecological signs found in the wild. Clear and lively in style, the tales told within encompass everything from dietary habits of hyaena to the effects of sleeping sickness on agriculture. Especially interesting are the authors remarkably forward-thinking ideas on race relations, ideas that would not become the rule in southern Africa for over 75 years. An altogether satisfying read.

5 out of 5 stars My comments on this Selous book........1997-03-14

I have read plenty of elephant hunting volumes in the likes of Bell, Stigand and several others but this Selous book is different. It's not entirely an account of Selous' adventures with his rifle but rather as the first portion of the book's title suggests, an informative wrap-up of the ways and characteristics of various African game. Selous is a unsurpassable raconteur when it comes to telling of big game, as this book proves. There's a chapter on Selous' search for the elusive inyala antelope, and it is of great interest. A book well worth parting with your cash for. Simply a true must-buy !

                Letting Go

The four Tillerman children finally have a home at their grandmother's rundown farm on the Maryland shore. It's what Dicey has dreamed of for her three younger siblings, but after watching over the others for so long, it's hard to let go. Who is Dicey, if she's no longer the caretaker for her family?

Dicey finds herself in new friends, in a growing relationship with her grandmother, and in the satisfaction of refinishing the old boat she found in the barn. Then, as Dicey experiences the trials and pleasures of making a new life, the past comes back with devastating force, and Dicey learns just how necessary -- and painful -- letting go can be.

At the beginning of summer, Momma had abandoned them and them later been traced to an asylum where she lay unrecognizing, unknowing. So Dicey Tillerman, her brothers James and Sammy, and her sister Maybeth had spent the summer on their own on a long and difficult journey to find a home with the grandmother they'd never met before. Now that they'd moved in with Gram, their troubles, Dicey hoped, would be over. Dicey had watched over the younger kids and brought them through--now she wanted to be just a little bit selfish, to refinish the old sailboat she'd found in Gram's barn, to earn a little spending money, to adjust to Gram and to her new life in the Chesapeake Bay country that had once been her momma's childhood home. Yet even with the building of new ties and a new life, old problems and sorrows did not go away by themselves. None of the Tillermans, and especially not Dicey, could forget about Momma. Nor could Dicey easily relinquish her need to watch and worry over the three younger children. Though she felt a growing bond with feisty, seemingly eccentric Gram, who talked of reaching out...and letting go, it took a crisis to help Dicey understand what such things might mean. This story is a sequel to "Homecoming."

                5 out of 5 stars Dicey Song.......2007-05-30

We all remember Dicey in the book Homecoming. Well, now she is back along with the whole gang. Now they have bigger problems and more trouble. Dicey wants to make boats and that's it. But she has to go to school and she has to take a home economics class. Even thought she would rather be building boats than sewing hems. James is also in school he is getting excellent grades and is even making friends. Sammy is all the same but he is starting to get in fights again. With Maybeth, she is having a hard time in school. Teachers are sending notes home and kids are making fun of her. But Maybeth does find a new talent. But these are the small problems because worse are happening at home. There mother still hasn't gotten better and they have to get money form welfare to support them. Gram isn't happy about the money but they need it. Even with all this bad they still manage to find good times. Everyone is settling down in there new home. Everyone is making friends, even Sammy. But not everything is good. This book is great for people who love to read. There is another book after this on to find out what happens between Dicey and Jeff.

5 out of 5 stars Finally finding a real home..........2006-12-12

Abandoned by their mentally-ill mother, the four Tillerman siblings have - against all odds - located the grandmother who didn't even know they existed. They've persuaded her to let them stay with her in Maryland, and they're finally beginning to make a home together as family.

But 13-year-old Dicey finds it hard to let go. She's been taking care of her younger sister and brothers all her life, and suddenly she's being told to live her own life. Nonetheless, Dicey gives it her best try, finding new friends Mina and Jeff, taking on a part-time job at Millie's grocery store, and standing up against an unfair teacher.

Then, just as Dicey is beginning to accept and enjoy her new life, she learns that her mother has been found...

                                  Book Description

This book outlines one of the vast and fruitful fields in protozoan microbiology and formulates the principles of obtaining biologically active substances from cultures of Protozoa. The correlation between composition of selected flagellates' cell components (polyunsaturated fatty acids, membrane surface glycophospolipids, intercellular polysaccharide, beta-1, 3-glycan) and their biological effects in experimental animals, is the main topic of the book. As the book's content shows, the Protozoa are gradually acquiring their place among traditional producers of biologically active substances. The row of producers of BAS can be extended by including non-parasitic representatives of the Protozoa (the phylum Sarcomastigophora). Representatives of the phylum Ciliophora are emerging. This book has been addressed to undergraduate and postgraduate students and young scientists to provide orientation in the field, especially in the sequence of studies which lead to obtaining biologically active substances and primary evaluation of their biological effects. This book may also be of interest to pharmacologists and manufacturers.

                                    Book Description

The unique properties and applications of transition metal compounds have long fascinated both physicists and chemists. This volume presents theoretical and experimental studies for a deeper understanding of the electronic and vibronic properties of these compounds. In particular, an introduction into properties of spin sublevels of dd*, dÂ*, and ÂÂ* states is given, and a modern ligand field theory based on the Angular Overlap Model is presented. In experimental case studies it is shown how to characterize different types of electronic transitions using modern methods of laser spectroscopy. Consequences of spin-orbit coupling, zero-field splittings, spin-lattice relaxations, chromophore-matrix interactions, Herzberg-Teller/Franck-Condon activities, and localization/delocalization properties are treated.

                                        1. Good history of cremation, appears to be well researched. 2. The balance of the book is a rehash of problems funeral homes and cemeteries have had over the last 25 years, and the philosophies of anti-funeral personalities. (Jessica Mitford fans will applaud wildly). Some errors of fact appear to indicate a lack of depth in understanding and background. 3. Tending to our dead in the 21st century is summed up in the final two pages as " What your have been seeing is what you will see in the future." Not the best use of reading time

                                        Book Description

Fabulous letters from the vagabond Beat poet to his friends—among them Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

For all his charm and intelligence poet Gregory Corso lived a vagabond life. He never held down a regular job. He rarely stayed very long under the same roof. He spent long stretches—some as long as four or five years—abroad. Many of his letters came from Europe—France, England, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Greece—as he kept in touch with his circle of friends—among them his best friend Allen Ginsberg and a steady supporter, Lawrence Ferlinghetti. He left (or was left by) a number of girlfriends and he fathered five children along the way. He was apt to raise a bit of a ruckus at poetry readings and other public events. No one could be sure what he might do next except that he would write poetry and get it published and that it would be widely read.

When the idea of a book of selected letters was first proposed, Gregory had some reservations about it. Would the book reveal too much of his private life? But then with typical hubris he said the equivalent of "let it all hang out" and "all" does hang out in An Accidental Autobiography. The book is indeed the next thing to an unplanned self-portrait and gives a lively sense of the life Gregory Corso led, marching to his own drummer and leaving in his wake such marvelous books of Beat poetry as The Happy Birthday of Death, Elegiac Feelings American, Long Live Man, and Herald of the Autochthonic Spirit.

Bill Morgan, who is extremely conversant with the Beats, has done an admirable job collecting letters from libraries and various individuals across the country and then selecting and organizing them in a progression that spans Corso's lifetime. In addition to Morgan's introduction and commentary, the book includes a special foreword by poet and rock star Patti Smith as well as a number of photographs.

This book fills in great holes in Corso's biography. Not only do we get an account of major periods of his adulthood, but for the first time his childhood is explored. The letter to his father is especially revealing. A major biography still needs to be done of this poet, among America's most important poets, and almost certainly the most important surrealist poet America has produced. It is especially interesting to see earlier drafts of now famous poems. The drafts are not nearly as good as the finished works, which to my mind proves that Corso was a conscious artist, and not the naif that he is often portrayed. Corso said the most important part of writing a poem was the editing. This voluminous group of letters probably gives first drafts of something like eighty poems. They are nowhere close to the hard sharp brilliance of the finished works. This book is indispensable to anyone who likes Corso's poems. It offers a very revealing insight into the biographical background. I am still hoping an excellent biography will come forth, and especially one that deals with the Catholic church, and Corso's foster families. Sadly, many of the people that Corso knew are dying off, so this project looks more and more remote with each passing year.
