Nice map, but waaayyy too high level.......2005-08-06

This map looks nice, but if you're going hiking, you'll be better off with the free park maps given at the park. It's just way too high level, with 100-foot contours, and very little detail. It's also not waterproof or resistant.

Essential map for hiking and backpacking.......2004-10-27

This is the essential topographical map for hiking in Yellowstone. Trails Illustrated also sells some maps of particular regions of the park such as Tower/Canyon at 1:83,333 scale. (The map of the whole park is 1:168,500.) The bigger map is perfectly serviceable for any hike that you might want to take, and I can't find any place in the park where the big map would lead you astray. Still, if you like having the smaller scale, go for it.

The small maps do have the advantage of showing specific backcountry campsites. If you use the larger map, you have to coordinate with other books that show these sites.

Like other Trails Illustrated maps, this one comes with all sorts of practical information on the back side of the map. None of this will be new to you if you've read the usual guide books, but it's moderately useful having it repeated here. One very helpful feature of this map is that it shows the burn areas so that you can avoid moderately or heavily burnt forests.

The trail numbers on this map are coordinated with Day Hiking Yellowstone by Tom Carter. I don't have that book so I can't vouch for how useful it is. However, it's easy to coordinate the numbered trails with other books that I do have (such as Lonely Planet Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, Hiking Yellowstone National Park: A Falcon Guide, and A Ranger's Guide to Yellowstone Day Hikes).

The Book About Friendship.......2005-12-10

The Gift of the Girl who Couldn't Hear by Susan Shreve is a great book. This book is realistic fiction. This story takes place in Mary Wood Elementary School. The main characters are Eliza and Lucy. Lucy is deaf. This book is about how Lucy tries out for the school play; Annie .Eliza is helping Lucy get a part in the play. Lucy is trying out to be one of the orphans. On the day of the tryouts, there is a surprise twist!
This book is really about friendship. I like when I found out who made the play. It was exciting. I also like the part when Eliza found out what part she got. The thing that I did not like was when it ended and I wanted it to continue. I don't want to tell you the rest, but read this book to find out the exciting ending.
I would recommend this book to the people who have friends that are deaf and the people who like books about personalities. Also it would be a good book for kids that like mysteries. The ages between 9-11 would be good for this book. My opinion is that this is an exciting and interesting book.

The Great Book I've Read.......2002-02-01

This book is about this girl named Eliza, which thinks she looks fat and ugly when she looks at herself on the mirror. Then one day, she met the girl who could not hear and only read people's lips to understand them. They both wanted to play on a play, so they sign up and both were accepted on a play.
I would rate this book a 4 (****), because it seems boring but interesting to read. I like the book, even though it is not the setting that makes me like the book, it is about the story. I like both of the characters, and they are okay. I am just wondering how did Eliza's friend learn how to read people's lips, so she could understand what they are saying. The book is just so-so, I mean okay, and the author didn't really use a lot of descriptive languages.

I think that this is a wonderful heart-warming story that is suitible for all ages and should be givin an award for it's great details and creativity!

Taught me everything I needed beyond ap physics C.......2007-06-05

Background: I took ap physics C (both Mech and E&M). This was my primary book for learning the rest of the physics that is on the SAT subject test. It gave me the extra lessons I needed for an 800.

Although I was expecting Princeton to be a terrible choice when it comes to math and science (usually Barrons is better there), this book was surprisingly good. It taught me everything I needed for the test that was not either mechanics or e&m. I do not know how good this book is for those 2 topics however (which is 60% of the test). Princeton Review always have the best practice tests by far (only the offical book has better ones, and no duh, they are real). I do not recommend barrons for this test at all. the practice test for kaplan is the closest to the real one in terms of score, but its on the easy side, which is never good. The practice tests in this book was way harder than the real one, but its got the exact format and I still consider it the best for practice. You can probably add at least 50 points to your score on the Princeton.

I gave this book a 4 instead of a 5 because the practice tests overly emphasized calculation (just like all other physics prep books) and it gives you a lot of formulas you will never need. The SAT physics test is mostly conceptual. The good news is, there was not a single thing that I have not seen before because of this book. and again, it is the best of its kind even if its not perfect.

An excellent book to learn physics, not for the SAT II.......2006-01-31

This book is an excellent source to learn about almost every aspect of physics. It touches base on things that are not taught in the high school curriculum. I took a year of regents physics and am taking IB physics this year and the book helped a lot. However, the practice problems and in depth information in this book is NOT ON THE PHYSICS SAT II. I took the test a few months ago and the test is nothing compared to the book. Yes it will overprepare you for the test, but if you don't have time to read and study all of those pages, theres no reason to. I'm sure there are other books out that will teach you all you need to know. Again, excellent book, but for the person who just wants to ace the test and nothing more, its a waste of time and energy trying to understand it all. It is not an easy read for an average student. I got a 780 on the test and most of the questions are all on concepts, maybe about 8 percent of the test had actual math problems where you had to work stuff out, and you really don't need to know that many formulas. All in all its a great book to impress your physics teacher and grasp many concepts but not the best for the test.

While not flawless, an excellent book to use.......2005-06-27

I started reviewing with this book for the SAT Physics Subject Test only three days before I had to take it. While I had taken one year of regular physics in school, we never had to memorize the equations for our tests. This book did an excellent job of condensing all the information needed, and its explanations were clear and concise. The review problems were challenging but ensured a thorough understanding of the concepts, and the provided solutions to the practice tests were easy to understand.

I rate this book a four instead of a five only because of its practice tests. There are only two of them, and I found them to be harder than the actual test (althougth that's better than being easier). To give a sense of the score distortion, I made a 740 on the first practice test, and I made a 790 on the real thing. So although this book's tests aren't great indicators of how well you will perform on the real SAT Physics Subject Test, its review of the material is very good, and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

the modern translation to read .......2007-08-27

Just as relevant as Donald Frame's translation of Montaigne is his translation of Rabelais. Besides this is the only reasonably priced editon of Rabelais with his complete works along with annotations that I could find.

Looks Good On Paper.......2005-02-09

My dear pantagruelists, Donald Frame was a very learned man. His lucid but formal, mildly pedantic style was perfect for Montaigne, but it doesn't suit the good Doctor Rabelais.

Reading Frame's Rabelais = slow and tedious
Reading Rabelais in French = slow and delightful
Reading Cohen's Penguin Rabelais = quick and delightful (while still basically dependable as a translation)

Yes, if you want a crib to accompany your volumes of F.R.'s collected works in French, that would be Frame. Frame's notes are better (though not as thorough as the ones in my French paperbacks). But if you want to read the book, Cohen's negligible and occasional mistakes don't matter--whether you hear Rabelais's voice and ride apace on his wings of verbal fancy, that does matter.

(For what it's worth, I mention J.M. Cohen as an alternative, rather than Burton Raffel or Andrew Brown, because of how bold these other translators, from what I've seen, have been in "freshening up" Rabelais. I do admire Raffel when he is just clearer and more natural. But I figure that, if you were even mildly tempted to buy Frame's scrupulous tome, then Cohen is preferable for his relative willingness to let the chaotically learned Medieval and Renaissance period detritus reach the English reader's ears.)
