Great Map, Decent Book.......2006-06-17

Thinking about heading out to Hungary? "Globetrotter Travel Pack Budapest and Hungary" by Brian Richards is a good place to start.

The map is why I bought this one. It is big, with a plainly designed appearance. Major roads are shown, but the map maker kept it clean of confusing lines and symbols. Use the mileage chart to get a rough idea of how far cities are from each other. It is 1:600,000. You'll also get insets of Pecs, Lake Balaton, the Budapest transit system, Keszthely, the Tihany Peninsula, a calendar of major events, and a smattering of factiods and pictures.

The book is for first-time visitors. Read about the basic history, with details about the major sites and why they exist, and information regarding the regions of the country, complete with captioned pictures. Among the more interesting aspects are the sidebars. Joszef Rippl-Ronai, the artist, is in there, as is curious bits about coffee and cake, goulash/gulyas, and a writer's cafe.

If you are looking for an easy, quick and colorful overview of Hungarian travel, buy this book. It is relatively fresh, as should any book be of that general European region, in light of the economic and social changes.

I fully recommend "Globetrotter Travel Pack Budapest and Hungary" by Brian Richards.

a vade mecum for the protein biochemist!.......2000-10-17

I perform so much protein purification and yet i still find this book to be a helpful reference for pointing me in new directions in the lab. although some of the sections are not terribly useful, they describe each major type of chromatography in a reasonable way and also discuss what to do with your protein once it is purified (e.g. mass spec, library screening); again in a way that is understandable!

A must book for biochemist that intend to purify proteins.......2000-06-14

This is a must book for biochemist and people that intend to become one. It gives a vast background on most biochemical methods used for the purification of proteins, including the history behind the methods. Not to mention the availability of comments on most topics, that help in understading the limits of the various procedures.

A book that I found difficult to get interested in.......2007-08-15

I felt like I was reading the sports pages for the first 140 pages. Too many stats, facts and figures. The storyline didn't flow, the plot was sluggish and languished for the most part. The story of Moe Berg's life should have packed some punch! I expected more pizazz. His life warranted it, but the book didn't deliver.

Good Biography, Unusual Person.......2006-01-22

This interesting biography covers a most unusual person. Moe Berg (1902-1972) was a talented linguist, ballplayer, and U.S. espionage agent for the OSS (forerunner of the CIA) before and during World War II and briefly for the CIA after the war. Author Nicholas Dawidoff describes Berg's mysterious life, including New Jersey boyhood, studies at Princeton and Columbia, and years as a second-string catcher for the Dodgers, White Sox, Indians, Senators and Red Sox. Even as a player Berg was better know for his linguistic skills and stealth than for his baseball exploits. Then readers learn of Berg's years as a spy, which probably began when Berg toured Japan with other big leaguers in 1934. The author describes Berg's secret wartime activities, including his 1944-45 mission to ascertain the status of Nazi nuclear research. We also read of his later years, when except for brief CIA assignments, Berg chose to freeload off relatives and friends rather than employ his superb linguistic and legal talents (he had a law degree). A Overall, Berg was an enigmatic man, and this biography, written two decades after his passing, fails to uncover much about him - perhaps Berg would have wanted it that way. Still, this is an interesting and nicely researched biography.

Not a pleasant person.......2005-04-07

Moe Berg was completely unpleasant. I found myself wondering why I should care about his life. He was a mediocre ballplayer, a mediocre scholar and a mediocre spy. His talent was that he was pleasant to be around. Why write a book about him?

Why read about him? I wondered that. My reaction was, "So what?"

A REAL-LIFE JOHN LE CARRE CHARACTER.......2004-06-11

Moe Berg is truly one of the most interesting, and enigmatic, characters in sports history. What always fascinated me was how, after WWII and no longer in baseball, Berg never worked. He would stay at friends and relatives' homes throughout the country, reading multiple newspapers, and maintaining strict control of those papers. My guess, and this would make for an interesting investigative study, is that he stayed on the OSS/CIA payroll and was working for them, in some capacity: Dissecting the news, dealing with Communist espionage - or who knows, maybe he was working with foreign elemnets. Berg was something. He has to be considered a major hero. Surely the fact that he was an ex-ballplayer makes him stand out from the other heroes under "Wild Bill" Donovan, as does the fact that a Jew was sent to Nazi-controlled Finland to get German scientists. This is a terrific story. (...)

A Trudge.......2002-07-24

I'd been anticipating reading this book for some time, but getting through it was a chore. Dawidoff's writing and research are thorough. Berg left behind a wealth of personal material and many who knew him were still alive and available by phone or personal interview to Dawidoff. Hundreds of anecdotes and details about Berg's life emerge from these resources, and Dawidoff marches them all past the reader. The question is "Why?" Berg never becomes very interesting. It is well-known that he was a mediocre major league catcher. He was not much better as a spy, excelling mostly at running up large expense accounts. His tradecraft was abysmal; making and keeping notes to himself about briefings he received is such a fundamental error as to be ludicrous. After more than 300 pages it remained hard for me to take Berg seriously in any of his endeavors. In the end this is the biography of a moderately interesting obsessive dilettante, whose avoidance of normal human contact except on his own often strange terms seems almost pathological. Dawidoff tries valiantly but a New Yorker profile of about one-tenth this length would have been a sufficient account of Moe Berg's mildly curious life.

Major Rusiecki tells the story of a pitched and decisive battle that unhinged the German plan for a swift and successful counteroffensive in December 1944 (a battle that was the key to the counteroffensive later called the Battle of the Bulge). A lone regiment of the 99th U.S. Infantry Division, the 394th, successfully defended a critical road intersection, the Losheimergraben Crossroads, for 36 hours from 16 to 17 December 1944. This valiant defense incurred a delay from which the 6th SS Panzer Army, the main effort of Hitler's Wacht am Rhein counteroffensive, could never recover. When the 394th finally withdrew on 17 December, the Germans already had to shift their focus farther south, to St. Vith and Bastogne, a move that sealed their eventual defeat. The battle for Losheimergraben is, in fact, the most significant action that occurred in the early hours of the Battle of the Bulge.

This book is a very well researched and well written account of this phase of World War II. It is obvious that Mr Rusiecki cares about this subject and has chosen to preserve a very important part of our countries history. Before reading this book, I was unaware of the critical part this battle played in winning the Battle of the Bulge. I'm sure the surviving members of the 99th Division are very proud of this book

In Environmental Governance, Lamont C. Hempel considers the nature of global environmental change and the institutional responses needed to manage it. While environmental problems are increasingly transboundary in scope and significance, governance remains sharply fragmented and territorial. For political institutions to cope successfully with growing biospheric crises, they must become "glocal" in design and operation-some of the environmental authority presently invested in sovereign states must be redistributed to both supranational entities and local communities.

Using political theory, applied policy analysis, and case studies, Hempel explains how major and sustainable improvements in the quality of life will require significant but achievable innovations. A Superb Book.......2003-11-26

This excellent book looks at the essence of environmental change on a global scale and the institutional responses required to manage it. While governance continues to be accutely territorial and splintered, the extent of environmental problems is increasingly transboundary. This book, while very interdisciplinary, is firmly grounded in political theory and applied policy analysis. Dr. Hempel successfully and forcefully demonstrates how changes such as the adoption of green technologies, human population stabilization, and the adoption of sustainable lifestyles are both necessary and achievable. It is a powerfully pragmatic examination of the global problems facing all human beings, and how to overcome them.
