          Book Description

          When her brother David finds a strange book, Kat Anderson is shocked to read its plan for her future as the last guardian against the evil Clan of Black Rings, with David her sworn enemy! Finally she understands why her grandfather insisted she take her martial-arts training so seriously. The years of training have made her a formidable foe, but she’ll need the spirit of Toho, her Samurai warrior ancestor, to help. And what part will the mysterious newcomer who claims to be her father play? Rick Hoberg’s vivid artwork and Gary Reed’s compelling story make Spirit of the Samurai a white-knuckle ride.

          Kat and David Anderson have a pretty typical brother and sister relationship. Meaning they like to fight with each other. The difference between them and other siblings is that they've been trained to fight by their grandfather since they were little kids. Kat's focus has always been on skill and agility. David is more about strength and force. They both like to win.

          The only family Kat and David know is their Grandfather. He has taken care of them and raised them ever since they can remember. Kat isn't sure how he supports them all without a job. He spends most of his time in his Dojo, or in the building next door to it. Kat and David aren't allowed in the Dojo, but their Grandfather often takes them to the other building to train. Although he calls it teaching.

          It's a good thing that Kat's had a lot of "teaching," because she's going to need all of it and more. When their family turns out to be legendary, and the legend comes to life, no one is quite prepared.

          SPIRIT OF THE SAMURAI: OF SWORDS AND RINGS is a fun, action-packed adventure, and very vividly written. A story that gives a whole new meaning to family history and family reunions. And one that ends way too quickly! I'm ready to read the next one, now.

          In the Seattle suburbs Grandfather raised his two grandchildren, fourteen years old David and thirteen years old Kat Anderson with four simple kind rules on treating and respecting others and one other, the adult mantra to obey him that that he expects both to follow. However, recently David has been constantly angry at his younger sister and has even instigated fights though her martial arts training usually overcomes his brute strength advantage. However this time he attacks her from behind and it takes Grandfather's intervention to stop him.

          When David enters their Grandfather's dojo without permission, Kat follows. He shows her a book that provides the history of Japanese Samurai, especially about two rival clans, the Toho and the Black Rings, that fought one another. Grandfather arrives, but David insists on learning the truth as he says they are descendents of Toho and the kid wears three of the four Black Rings that he also found. Finally David touches the Swords of Toho and Hiro of the Black Rings. Whereas David becomes possessed with evil, his sister touches the Toho sword and becomes the last guardian battling against her sibling who wants her dead; on her side is Grandfather and Kyosha the Samurai who has just arrived claiming to be her Father.

          Targeting elementary school children, this is an action-packed Samurai fantasy starring a young female teen whose opponent in a life and death struggle is her older brother. The story line is filled with action while illustrations enhance the first-rate plot. David's nastiness comes out before he is possessed so young readers will root for Kat to defeat him during their sibling battle.

          When I was six months old, I dropped from the sky -- the lone survivor of a deadly Japanese plane crash. The newspapers called me Heaven. I was adopted by a wealthy family in Tokyo, pampered, and protected. For nineteen years, I thought I was lucky.

          I'm learning how wrong I was.

          They say your life begins on your wedding day.

          Here's what happened on mine:

          I lost the person I love most.

          I learned that everything I knew about my family was a lie.

          Now I'm being hunted. I must fight back, or die.

          My life ended that day.

          The old Heaven is gone.

          Finally, an actual book with an Asian heroine! If you think about it, there are no actual Asian or Indian figures, not to mention Native American, Middle Eastern, or HIspanic figures, in American pop culture. Movies or books that COUlD be about someone from any race, and don't pertain to any particular culture, are usually about White people. Now, I'm not prejudiced. Being Asian and having experienced prejudice and ignorance in my lifetime, I really shouldn't be. I know this book really HAD to be about a Japanese girl, but it is nice to actually read a book about someone who is Asian.
          That being said, it's time to move on to the actual book.
          When I first picked this book up, I expected it to be some sort of weird time travelly novel, what with the whole samurai thingy. I felt the title was a bit misleading, which is why I gave the book three stars.
          I also gave the book three stars because it wasn't really substantial literature. I understand not all teen novels are very substantial, and by that, I don't mean short, I mean, well, substantial. The Clique novels are substantial. Books by Meg Cabot are somewhat substantial, but not really. This series is VERY low on that meter. It was good to occupy your time with, but not something very memorable, nor was it very well written.

          Never, in my entire life, have I read anything more stupid and absurd than this book! I bought it because I thought it would be thrilling and I'd learn something about the samurai and their culture and way of thinking.
          Well, I did a little, but that's all there is to this book.

          The stupid protagonist - when knowing that she's hunted by people who want to KILL her - prefers to go shopping instead of waiting at home where she'd be save!!! Farther she has a horribly ennerving obsession with the movies - and not even good ones. That girl is just plain spoiled and I don't understand how any sensible person can identify themselves with this silly little girl in this silly little book.

          If you thought of buying this book - DON'T!
          Just go with Francine Pascal's "Fearless" Series which is similar to this one but with a convincing main character and very thrilling and interesting plot lines, covering espionage and romance as well as usual teen angst... spiced with the fact that the main character can't feel fear!

          5 out of 5 stars Awesome new series for grrrll power (and more).......2004-02-13

          I was a little bit doubtful about this series when I picked up the first book, thinking that it would be too much like the Francine Pascal Fearless series - but Samurai Girl stands on its own two feet and provides an enjoyable read that keeps me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next book in the series (just finished book 3 and about to start book 4).

          Heaven is an amazing character, but is also very human. She was the only survivor of a plane crash when she was only six months old and has lived a safe life full of luxury and anything she ever wanted. Then her adoptive father brings her to America to marry the son of his business rival and Heaven finds herself in the country that she has always wanted to visit - except nothing is as it seems. At the wedding ceremony a warrior that appears to be a ninja disrupts the ceremony and kills Heavens brother. Fleeing from the wedding Heaven finds herself living in L.A far from the only family that she has ever known, and studying the ways of the Samurai.

          This series is full of amazing characters that are so real that they seem like they could be people walking down the street. The best part about these books is that you get to feel what Heaven and thinking and see things through her eyes, but you also get to learn what other characters are thinking as you get inside there heads at the ends of various chapters. I can't wait to see how far Carrie Asai is going to take this series!

          If you like these books and haven't tried them yet then you shoud definitely try the Fearless series by Francine Pascal, and you may also like to try the Tomorrow series by John Marsden if the action and danger appeals to you.

                    Book Description

                    This treatment provides an exposition of discrete time dynamic processes evolving over an infinite horizon. Chapter 1 reviews some mathematical results from the theory of deterministic dynamical systems, with particular emphasis on applications to economics. The theory of irreducible Markov processes, especially Markov chains, is surveyed in Chapter 2. Equilibrium and long run stability of a dynamical system in which the law of motion is subject to random perturbations is the central theme of Chapters 3-5. A unified account of relatively recent results, exploiting splitting and contractions, that have found applications in many contexts is presented in detail. Chapter 6 explains how a random dynamical system may emerge from a class of dynamic programming problems. With examples and exercises, readers are guided from basic theory to the frontier of applied mathematical research.

                        Book Description

                        This book is devoted to the theory of topological dynamics of random dynamical systems. The theory of random dynamical systems is a relatively new and fast expanding field of research which attracts the attention of researchers from various fields of science. It unites and develops the classical deterministic theory of dynamical systems and probability theory, hence finding many applications in a very wide range of disciplines from physics to biology to engineering, finance, and economics. Recent developments call for a systematic presentation of the theory. Topological dynamics of random dynamical systems is the first book to deal with the theory of topological dynamics of random dynamical systems. It presents in detail the solutions to the most fundamental problems of topological dynamics: linearization of nonlinear smooth systems, classification, and structural stability of linear hyperbolic systems. Employing the tools and methods of algebraic ergodic theory, the theory presented in the book has surprisingly beautiful results showing the richness of random dynamical systems as well as giving a gentle generalization of the classical deterministic theory. Mathematicians working in the theory of dynamical systems, stochastic dynamics, as well as those interested in applications of mathematical systems with random noise, will find this timely book a valuable reference and rich source of modern mathematical results and methods.

                          Book Description

                          This book is the first systematic presentation of the theory of dynamical systems under the influence of randomness. It includes products of random mappings as well as random and stochastic differential equations. The basic mulitplicative ergodic theorem is presented and provides a random substitute for linear algebra. On its basis random invariant manifolds are constructed, systems are simplified by smooth random coordinate transformations (random normal forms), and qualitative changes in families of random systems (random bifurcation theory) are studied. Numerous instructive examples are treated analytically or numerically. The main intention, however, is to present a reliable and rather complete source of reference which lays the foundation for future work and applications.

                          Book Description

                          For centuries, astronomers have been interested in the motions of the planets and in methods to calculate their orbits. Since Newton, mathematicians have been fascinated by the related N-body problem. They seek to find solutions to the equations of motion for N masspoints interacting with an inverse-square-law force and to determine whether there are quasi-periodic orbits or not. Attempts to answer such questions have led to the techniques of nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory. In this book, a classic work of modern applied mathematics, Jürgen Moser presents a succinct account of two pillars of the theory: stable and chaotic behavior. He discusses cases in which N-body motions are stable, covering topics such as Hamiltonian systems, the (Moser) twist theorem, and aspects of Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theory. He then explores chaotic orbits, exemplified in a restricted three-body problem, and describes the existence and importance of homoclinic points. This book is indispensable for mathematicians, physicists, and astronomers interested in the dynamics of few- and many-body systems and in fundamental ideas and methods for their analysis. After thirty years, Moser's lectures are still one of the best entrées to the fascinating worlds of order and chaos in dynamics.

                          This book presents some of the research results for which Moser is famous. (He is the "M" of the KAM trio). The mathematical level is far too high for someone like me with only an introductory knowledge of differential equations and dynamical systems. This is not an introductory or expository work, but a reference for the research mathematician.

                            Book Description

                            This book contains the lectures given at the Second Conference on Dynamics and Randomness held at the Centro de Modelamiento Matemático of the Universidad de Chile, from December 9-13, 2003. This meeting brought together mathematicians, theoretical physicists, theoretical computer scientists, and graduate students interested in fields related to probability theory, ergodic theory, symbolic and topological dynamics. The courses were on:
                            -Some Aspects of Random Fragmentations in Continuous Times;
                            -Metastability of Ageing in Stochastic Dynamics;
                            -Algebraic Systems of Generating Functions and Return Probabilities for Random Walks;
                            -Recurrent Measures and Measure Rigidity;
                            -Stochastic Particle Approximations for Two-Dimensional Navier Stokes Equations; and
                            -Random and Universal Metric Spaces.

                            The intended audience for this book is Ph.D. students on Probability and Ergodic Theory as well as researchers in these areas. The particular interest of this book is the broad areas of problems that it covers. We have chosen six main topics and asked six experts to give an introductory course on the subject touching the latest advances on each problem.

                              Book Description

                              Stochastic differential equations play an increasingly important role in modeling the dynamics of a large variety of systems in the natural sciences, and in technological applications. This book is aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers in mathematics, physics, the natural sciences, and engineering. It presents a new constructive approach to the quantitative description of solutions to systems of stochastic differential equations evolving on well-separated timescales. The method, which combines techniques from stochastic analysis and singular perturbation theory, allows the domains of concentration for typical sample paths to be determined, and provides precise estimates on the transition probabilities between these domains.

                              In addition to the detailed presentation of the set-up and mathematical results, applications to problems in physics, biology, and climatology are discussed. The emphasis lies on noise-induced phenomena such as stochastic resonance, hysteresis, excitability, and the reduction of bifurcation delay.

                                  Book Description

                                  The relation between mathematics and physics has a long history, in which the role of number theory and of other more abstract parts of mathematics has recently become more prominent.

                                  More than ten years after a first meeting in 1989 between number theorists and physicists at the Centre de Physique des Houches, a second 2-week event focused on the broader interface of number theory, geometry, and physics.

                                  This book is the result of that exciting meeting, and collects, in 2 volumes, extended versions of the lecture courses, followed by shorter texts on special topics, of eminent mathematicians and physicists.

                                  The present volume has three parts: Random matrices, Zeta functions, Dynamical systems.

                                  The companion volume is subtitled: On Conformal Field Theories, Discrete Groups and Renormalization and will be published in 2006 (Springer, 3-540-30307-3).

                                    Book Description

                                    Random perturbations of Hamiltonian systems in Euclidean spaces lead to stochastic processes on graphs, and these graphs are defined by the Hamiltonian. In the case of white-noise type perturbations, the limiting process will be a diffusion process on the graph. Its characteristics are expressed through the Hamiltonian and the characteristics of the noise. Freidlin and Wentzell calculate the process on the graph under certain conditions and develop a technique which allows consideration of a number of asymptotic problems. The Dirichlet problem for corresponding elliptic equations with a small parameter are connected with boundary problems on the graph.
