Toledano-New Orleans-144045
The Definitive Guide to the Architectural and Cultural Treasures of One of North America's Most Beloved Cities
The National Trust Guide to New Orleans is an indispensable resource for tourists, armchair travelers, architects, and anyone concerned with the preservation of one of the world's most fascinating cities. From the cast iron ornamentation in the French Quarter to the stately Greek Revival residences of the Garden District, this lavishly illustrated guide takes you on a neighborhood-by-neighborhood journey through the architectural and cultural treasures of the "Big Easy."
Providing a cross section of types and styles of architecture for each neighborhood covered, the guide pays special attention to architecturally important buildings once inhabited by notable persons. Photographs, drawings, engravings, etchings, maps, and other images created by earlier building watchers, show you the sites through the eyes of other generations. You'll find fascinating historical details about the buildings' architects, builders, and residents; up-to-date information on food, lodgings, and entertainment; and discussions of preservation issues that pertain to many of the sites.

another New Orleans book.......2000-10-16
I have probably twenty New Orleans books in my library. This one is essential--one of the 5 best. I am ordering extra copies for European business associates I met with in New Orleans.

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-11-17
Readers met Gabrielle, the half-Elf princess of Verdeau with a talent for healing, in Holly Bennett's The Bonemender. Now she's back in THE BONEMENDER'S OATH, along with many characters whom readers of The Bonemender will be glad to see back in its sequel. The war between Gabrielle's people and those of the mysterious Greffier across the Krylian mountains is done, but Gabrielle's struggle to keep her people together and herself alive, while keeping to the oath she swore as a bonemender, is far from over. She's not alone, however; she's got Feolan, the Elf she loves, Derkh, the boy from Greffier whose life she saved during the war, and her family.
Speaking of her family, Gabrielle's brother Tristan has troubles of his own. He's fallen in love with Rosalie, but he's not alone in wanting her as his wife. The dark and dangerous LaBarque wants Rosalie for himself, and he's crazy enough to do whatever it takes--unless Tristan can stop him in time, saving himself as well as Rosalie.
Aside from their personal troubles, there are politics to consider for the people of Verdeau. They want peace in the Kryllian Basin, after the war in which many of their people, including Gabrielle and Tristan's father, the King, were killed. However, the Greffaires might have different ideas about what is to come.
Objectively, THE BONEMENDER'S OATH is not an exceptional book. The writing isn't breathtakingly brilliant, nor the plot. Still, though, everything mysteriously comes together to make a powerful story that will grab the reader's attention and refuse to let go! I read this book in one sitting, and I know I won't be alone in that. It is recommended to have read The Bonemender before reading this novel; I don't know how confusing it would be to someone who has not read that, but certainly more so than to someone who has. THE BONEMENDER'S OATH will meet the expectations of readers of Holly Bennett's previous book, with the same great characters and way of drawing you in completely; it is a highly recommended read for fans of fantasy!

Customer Reviews:
Fantasy and Discrimination.......2007-05-18
I enjoyed the story, even though I think it is written more for middle school than for high school readers. It certainly begs for a sequel - which I see is now out, The Bonemender's Oath. I will be reading it to see how Ms. Bennett continues the story.
Good.......2006-08-11
I really liked this book and it was an easy read. The only part I didn't like was the info on elves, and how they live for, like, 800 years more than regular humans.
However, it is a very interesting book and it has an original plot.
Disappointing.......2006-07-17
When I picked up this book I was unsure whether I would enjoy it. The plot line was generic, a younge woman who is extraordinary with no real reason for it, but I thought that would leave room for interesting twists curtesy of Mrs. Bennett. I was sorely, sorely disappointed.
Let's start with the characters themselves; Gabrielle the protagonist is a boring character. She is a princess, an extraordinary bonemender, compassionate, unprejudiced, strong willed and strong minded, has a wonderful voice and is exremely beautiful. Therein lies the problem. Instead of giving us a multifaceted character that grows and learns to overcome their faults and problems Mrs. Bennette gives us a perfect character with a great lack of faults, or none at all to be honest. It is a lazy way to create a character as if to say "Here is the lead, have your pick of stuff to like about her." I was not rooting for Gabrielle I could not relate to her at all. I relate to quirks and faults.
Fealon and Danais are the elves. Feolan falls in love with Gabrielle and their romance is stilted and unbelievable. As is most of the book and their conversations.
Danais is the reason they meet Gabrielle when he is gored by a boar, very early in the story. This, which should have been interesting as Danais struggles for his life read as; oops blood. Good luck! Found a girl with crazy healing skills. HE LIVES! (Unessesary healer babble) It obvious that he will live. Gabrielle can do anything!
The most interesting character was Tristan, Gabrielle's younger brother. He was much more multifaceted and the only character I invested in.
I did not care about the characters, I did not care what happened in the convinent and loose ending and if one is not invested enough in the book to care for the characters and their future than the book isn't much good.
Over all: Generic, overdone plot, Flat characters, Slow climax, stilted speech. Boring story. I won't be reading the sequal.
One and a half stars out of five.
Great story.......2006-04-03
This is a wonderful story combining humans, elves, healing, friendship, prejudice, war, and love. Féolan and Danais, elves, trust their lives in the hands of a human healer, Gabrielle, when Danais is attacked by a wild boar. Gabrielle is a bonemender - a healer with unusual abilities, not seen in most humans. While recovering, Féolan approaches Gabrielle's father, the King, with some distressing news - the people of a neighboring country are mounting forces for an attack. Not sure whether or not to trust the elves, scouts are sent to evaluate the situation - never to return. The country starts preparing for war, including the bonemenders, while Feolan and Danais continue on their journey. But Gabrielle and Féolan's hearts are torn now that they are no longer together. How will either of them survive the upcoming battles? I am not usually a fan of the war/battle stories but it isn't the focus of this story. I thought this a delightful young adult story written well. Next up is The Bonemender's Oath.

Book Description
Neuroregulation is a challenging and rapidly developing field that holds the key to many currently intractable medical conditions from nervous and mental diseases to stress-related disorders. Advances in Neuroregulation mirrors the broad scope of research in this area with topics ranging from new concepts on the immune system and on the action of antidepressants to the evolution and development of the autonomic nervous system.
In addition, the latest research findings are presented for behavioural disorders and medical conditions such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Another area of emphasis is the body's responses to stress and the effect of neuroactive agents in the treatment of stress-related conditions.
Many chapters are devoted to the progress being made at the cellular and molecular level, including areas such as:
- the conditions for culture of different types of neural cells
- conformational diseases and the protein folding problem
- vasoactive intestinal polypeptide release from pancreatic islets
- the effect of melatonin and corticosterone on macrophages
Here, in a book that expands the frontiers of neuroscience, researchers into neuroregulation at the molecular and cellular levels as well as those working at the clinical and systemic levels will find important results relating to their field.

Book Description
This volume contains contributions presented at the IUTAM Symposium on
Smart Structures and Structronic Systems, held in Magdeburg, Germany, 26-29 September 2000. Synergistic integration of smart materials, structures, sensors, actuators and control electronics has redefined the concept of structures from a conventional passive elastic system to an active controllable structronic (
structure + elec
tronic) system with inherent self-sensing, diagnosis, and control capabilities. The Symposium was focused on the fundamental mechanics and electromechanics of structures and structronic systems, including smart materials, sensors, actuators, and control electronics. This book represents the symposium highlights, and consists of 43 papers presented by distinguished scientists from 15 countries. The editors sincerely hope that the book will serve as a milestone in this new emerging field and further promote the technology in both scientific research and practical applications of structronic systems.
Due to the multidisciplinary nature of structronic systems this book will be of interest to researchers and engineers from theoretical and applied mechanics and many other disciplines, such as structures, materials, control, electronics, electromechanics, manufacturing, computers, and mathematics.

Book Description
Immediate, dramatic, illuminating-through his own riveting story, Michael Datcher, a young black poet, argues passionately for a black man's right to security, family, and love.
In Raising Fences, Michael Datcher offers a view of young black men seldom seen in the media-men who long for loving, stable marriages, fatherhood, and homes in safe neighborhoods. In this emotionally raw and intimate narrative, Datcher reflects on his fatherless childhood in inner-city Los Angeles, his attraction to local gangs, his promiscuity, and, at times, his lack of faith. But he also writes of his deep desire-and the desires of other black men he knows-to escape a cycle that deprives children of what they need most and creates empty shells of grown men. Here is the story of one man's success in overcoming the obstacles thrown at him from birth. It is a powerful case for fathers, for family, for racial communication and understanding. And it is also a love story, a story of courage and faith. Its message is one we need to hear now more than ever before.
Customer Reviews:
The Urban Book Source.......2007-08-13
Raising Fences, a memoir, brings you on a tour through the life of an enduring Black man, while staying clear of the pimp-esque bravado. Datcher, born to a single mother who births him after being raped, but is given up for adoption, develops an obsession of being a great husband and father early in his life. Taken through his struggles with self-identity, female relationships, financial hardships, Datcher hides nothing, and tells all. If you are looking for a book that will do away with the Black man "playa" myth, this one is for you. A great poetic read from cover to cover.
Speak My Brotha.......2007-05-13
If like me you are a woman and have always wanted to know about the thought process of a blk man then this is the book for you. M. Datcher does a great job of navigating us through his mind and life. Great read and an important read especially for the women out there playing that trifiling baby daddy game.
Raising Fences: A Black Man's Love Story-An ASiS Book Club Review.......2007-05-07
RAISING FENCES by Michael Datcher is a gripping, realistic tale of a fatherless child's struggle into manhood. Mr. Datcher's writing style is remarkable. His use flashbacks and crisp and clear imagery allows readers to live vicariously through the author.
Readers will be drawn into this story as the author delves into intricate issues of African-American families such as broken homes, adoption, unprotected sex, surviving the streets, loveless relationships, having children out of wedlock and so much more. He does an excellent job of providing a male's prospective on these various issues.
The use of poetry incorporated in the book is an added bonus for poetry lovers, but may not be received well by readers who are not fans of poetry.
In this inspiring book, Mr. Datcher also shows readers that your past doesn't have to dictate your future.
Take a bow Mr. Datcher, for you have penned a masterpiece that not only is enjoyable to read, but educational and informative as well. This autobiography is highly recommended!!!
excellent.......2006-08-23
This book was amazing... I could not put it down... How have I went all this time without hearing about this book!?
Most books I love it is because in some way I can identify with the characters; not in this one... I loved it because it was raw, passionate and based on truth... truth of the relationships of our black men...excellent!
We Need More of This.......2006-07-14
This book is great and I hope that it will spur a new line of books in a similar vain by black men.
I can not put into words the feelings reading this book brought out in me. We as black women speak candidly about our emotions daily, but to see a black man, correction a strong black man do it brings such elation. My deepest respect to Michael Datcher for exposing the emotional side of a black man, and lets hope that there will be more powerful but tender works like this from Datcher in the future. I will be waiting.

Book Description
The Politics of the Earth provides an excellent and accessible introduction to thinking about the environment by looking at the way people use language on environmental issues. John Dryzek analyses the various approaches which have dominated environmental issues over the last three decades, and which are likely to be influential in the future: Survivalism - based on the contention that the earth has a limited stock of resources and prescribes drastic multidimensional action to prevent global disaster, receiving a reply from Promethans who deny such limits exist. Environmental Problem Solving - recognises the existence of ecological problems but views them as tractable within the basic framework of industrial society. Sustainability - defined by imaginative attempts to dissolve the conflicts between environmental and economic values. Green Radicalism - rejects the basic structure of industrial society and the way the environment is conceptualised and promotes transformation in human consciousness, economics and politics. John Dryzek provides a lively assessment of these various perspectives, their rise and fall, their interaction and impacts, and their strengths and weaknesses. His analysis of these discourses leads up to a concluding argument for a reinvigorated ecological democracy. The Politics of the Earth offers a new way of classifying and comparing the main strands of environmental politics. It is a fascinating and essential reading for all students of environmental politics and policy, and for anyone with an interest in environmental issues.
Book Description
In Deliberative Environmental Politics, Walter Baber and Robert Bartlett link political theory with the practice of environmental politics, arguing that the "deliberative turn" in democratic theory presents an opportunity to move beyond the policy stalemates of interest group liberalism and offers a foundation for reconciling rationality, strong democracy, and demanding environmentalism. Deliberative democracy, which presumes that the essence of democracy is deliberation -- thoughtful and discursive public participation in decision making -- rather than voting, interest aggregation, or rights, has the potential to produce more environmentally sound policy decisions and a more ecologically rational form of environmental governance.
Baber and Bartlett defend deliberative democracy's relevance to environmental politics in the twenty-first century against criticisms from other theorists. They critically examine three major models for deliberative democracy -- those of John Rawls, Jurgen Habermas, and advocates of full liberalism such as Amy Gutman, Dennis Thompson, and James Bohman -- and analyze the implications of each of these approaches for ecologically rational environmental politics as well as for institutions, citizens, experts, and social movements. In order to establish that democracy is ecologically sustainable and that environmental protection can (and must) become a norm of culture rather than a mere fact of government, they argue, new models of ecological deliberation and deliberative environmentalism are required.

Book Description
One of the key questions to have exercised green political theorists in recent years concerns the relationship of the environment 'agenda' and democracy. Both environmentalists and democrats have a tendency to think of each other as natural bedfellows but in fact there is little theoretical or practical reason why they should be. Indeed some theorists have argued that the environmental movement has grown from fundamentally authoritarian roots and it is arguable that the only really effective way of implementing environmental politics is by imposing them in an authoritarian manner. This book deals with the tensions between democracy and environmentalism from a variety of theoretical and empirical perspectives.
