      Book Description

Want to know where in New Jersey you can go fossil hunting? How about cranberry harvesting? Perhaps you'd like to find the most accessible Garden State fishing areas for people with disabilities? Or maybe you've just been wondering how Double Trouble State Park got its name?

Now in its third edition, this updated guide—the first of its kind for New Jersey—lists over 250 parks, forests, and natural areas in the Garden State, from national, state, city, and county parks to nature preserves run by nonprofit groups, arboretums, and undeveloped wildlife management areas. Wherever you live in New Jersey, you can find a beautiful place nearby for picnicking, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, boating, and a host of other outdoor activities. All are open to the public, and most are free or charge only a small fee. Michael P. Brown divides the state into six regions along county lines and includes helpful maps, so outdoor enthusiasts can easily plan excursions.

For each park, the guide provides up-to-date, practical information about locations, phone numbers, fees, hours, seasons, acreage, regulations, handicap access, special facilities and activities, campsites, swimming and boat launching sites, restrooms, playgrounds and picnic sites, hunting and fishing, and hiking. This edition also includes broadened coverage of mountain biking and horseback riding.

Ellen Wittlinger, author of the Printz Honor Book Hard Love, mines the turbulence of young adulthood in this modern-day epistolary novel (think smiley-face emoticons and IMs) that examines the weird summer between high school and college. The story begins when 18-year-old, Boston-born, singer-songwriter Chloe visits a college in Connecticut as a prospective student and meets the dreamy singer-actor Julian from Florida. Both primed to say good-bye to high school and hello to the rest of their lives, the two share an intense, somewhat smooch-filled weekend that blossoms into an online romance. Inconveniently, Chloe already has a boyfriend. And both of them have prom, graduation, and summer jobs to contend with. A bouquet of ill-timed roses exposes Chloe's secret tryst and wrecks prom, but the revelations don't stop here. Chloe's sister Genevieve comes out as a lesbian via e-mail and Julian's sister e-announces her Las Vegas wedding to a man no one has met. The reaction of Chloe's parents to Gen's coming out is both comical and wince-inducing. (If she grew her hair long again would her heterosexuality be saved?) But, with the help of a few instructional books, everyone comes around in the end.

While typical teen confusion runs rampant, Wittlinger's characters are intelligent and considerate--always following honest outbursts with heartfelt apologies. Despite the large cast of characters shooting off e-mails, IMs, letters, and postcards--all depicted with distinct fonts or handwriting--the novel manages to be cohesive and effectively multi-layered. Cleverly, Chloe's subject heads are lines from songs by Dar Williams, Greg Brown, John Prine, the Indigo Girls, and more, and a "playlist" is included in the back. Book Description

"I'm not picking Cartwright just because I met Julian there. For all I know he'll change his mind and not even go! Although that would be a shame because I want him to be the father of my firstborn child. KIDDING! :-}"

While on a college visit, Chloe meets Julian, another prospective freshman, and infatuated, the two high school seniors begin a long-distance relationship. Chloe is thrilled that she'll have a boyfriend at college, although she doesn't know how to break the news to Eli, her best friend whom she's sort of dating.

As Chloe and Julian prepare to meet again, they must face the question of whether their relationship is based on who they really are or who they imagine each other to be.

      2 out of 5 stars Can't Anything Ever Work?.......2006-09-07

I read this almost two years ago, so if I can't remember some peoples' names or I ger a few details wrong, don't be too harsh.
This book was mostly substandard in the world of young adult literature-- containing the typical stories of teenagers in 'love' with no real twists save for their seemingly odd tastes in music, which felt not like a heartfelt new touch to the genre but rather like a gimmick. But what truly dismayed me about this book was the fact that the author seemed to say that NO relationships ever worked. The main character Chloe's relationship with her first boyfriend didn't work, her relationship with Julian didn't work, and the 'third guy' seemed to be a cliche of misunderstandings commonly found in this sort of literature. I could understand why she wouldn't want to be with any of these three guys or would at least be confused about things, but what about her sister's relationship? Couldn't the author at least have presented the audience with SOME hope in the fact that some relationships do work, especially considering that her sister and her sister's girlfriend were old enough to make something like a life partnership believable? At the end of the book, none of the main characters are in happy, definite relationships, which seems pessimistic and unnecessary.

      5 out of 5 stars A Senior Girl's Must.......2005-12-21

i loved this book. it really captured my feelings heading off to college. it has the usual girl problems but it also delved into things like lesbianism, abortion ect. this book let me know that i am not alone in feeling scared. anyone going off to college should take a look.

3 out of 5 stars All Sizzle No Steak.......2005-08-18

This book had good potential but kept letting me down! It tried to be edgy with the music you've never heard of and the lesbian sister and it just came accross as trying too hard. The heroine is a bit drippy and doesn't know her own mind. She seems a lot younger than 18 and since I can't respect her, it's really hard to like the book. Get it from the library ... I doubt this will be read more than once.

      4 out of 5 stars ........2005-02-01

"Heart On My Sleeve" is about a girl named Cloe and a guy named Julian. They get to know each other a little bit when they go to a college orientation. They keep in touch though e-mails, letters, postcards, and IMs. As the story progresses, they meet again and they are so shocked to find out who one another actually are.... Will Julian and Chloe still end up going to the same college together as planned?

5 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining Read.......2004-12-16

I thought "Heart On My Sleeve" was a very good book. I chose it primarily because of the e-mail format writing style that so far only a few authors have explored.

This is a coming of age story that gives you the transition of a teenage girl towards the end of her senior year in high school on to her first months of college towards the end of the book. The storyline is very relatable for those of us who have had their heart broken, those of us who've fallen in love with someone for who we think they are, and it's also a story of thinking you know everything about your family and not really knowing as much as you thought.

I think this book is worth the money because it's a good, fast read that has a surprising ending you may not expect.

              Book Description

The global loss of biodiversity has led to a renewed interest in the underlying mechanisms that explain spatial differences and temporal change of diversity. This book synthesises recent advances in our understanding of interactions that enhance or diminish coexistence among competing species. It features an innovative, spatial view of competition and coexistence. The chapters are logically grouped and stitched together by the central organising principle of spatial distribution and mobility of competing species and their resources. The text also covers ecological modelling and experimental evidence in the search for general principles across ecosystems, from lake plankton and rocky shore benthos to grasslands and insects.

                  Book Description

This volume considers how media firms, as well as entire industries, exist and persist over time despite what often seems to be intense competition for such resources as audiences and advertisers. Addressing competition within and among media organizations and industries, including broadcasting, cable, and the Internet, author John W. Dimmick studies the media industries through the niche theory lens, developed by bioecologists to explain competition and coexistence. He examines the targets of the different media--audience, advertisers, money--and how they compete, using examples from a variety of studies.

Each chapter incorporates relevant economic constructs into the analytic framework. This approach includes the use of economics of scale to explain selection and firm mortality in newspapers and movie theaters; the application of the transaction costs concept to explicate the rise of advertising agencies; the employment of the strategic group concept in analyzing the niche breadth strategy; and themeasurement of gratifications-utilities.

A comprehensive overview of the determinants of media competition and coexistence, Media Competition and Coexistence: The Theory of the Niche offers unique insights for scholars, students, researchers, and practitioners in media economics, management, and business.

                    Description:
Forty-six years of vegetation response to mesquite removal at dry, low elevation sites on the Santa Rita Experimental Range in southern Arizona was only slightly different than the vegetation dynamics where mesquite trees were left intact. Only the density of threeawn grass species (Aristida spp.) was greater in the mesquite removal areas: and that difference persisted even after the cover of mesquite was no longer different between treatment and control areas. Cover of shrubs and perennial grasses, and density of all other perennial grasses did not differ between mesquite treatments throughout the study period. Mesquite cover on treated areas was not different than untreated areas 40 years after tree removal. The long-term results support the interpretation that vegetation dynamics at these dry locations, are not limited by the abundance of neighbouring mesquite. Alternatively, mesquite abundance is self-limiting at levels less than would influence grass abundance and precipitation anomalies may override any effects of neighbouring mesquite. Practically, these results suggest that areas with = <350mmyear^-^1 of annual precipitation and <20% mesquite cover may have very little potential for increasing grass abundance through the removal of mesquite trees.

                      Description:
Ants and land crabs are common inhabitants of many coastal and insular communities across the tropics and subtropics, and yet direct evidence of interspecific competition between ants and land crabs has only recently been documented. I conducted a series of observational and manipulative experiments to further elucidate the mechanisms of competition, as well as coexistence, in these two groups in an archipelago of small Bahamian islands. Diel baiting trials demonstrated a significant temporal difference in foraging activity between the land hermit crab, Coenobita clypeatus (Herbst), and ant Brachymyrmex obscurior Forel, suggesting this is one mechanism underlying their coexistence on small oceanic islands. Reciprocal manipulative baiting experiments, in which one of a pair of species was removed from baits, documented that aggressive interspecific interactions underlie patterns of complementary distribution and temporal turnover at rich food resources. This was true for competition between hermit crabs and B. obscurior, and between B. obscurior and a second ant species, Dorymyrmex pyramicus Roger. Negative species associations at baits were found to be common throughout an archipelago of 69 small islands. A trade-off in exploitative and interference abilities may be a second mechanism allowing species coexistence on these small islands. Interspecific interactions such as competition and predation may occur commonly between ants and land crabs and have important consequences for the structure and function of tropical and subtropical insular ecosystems.

                        Description:
The paper identifies conditions under which asymmetric equilibria may exist when carriers compete in designing their network configurations in a game-theoretical framework. Two carriers are assumed here, which are allowed to play three different strategies: point-to-point (PP), hub-and-spoke (HS) or multi-hub. We find two main stable outcomes, which depend on the size of the internal market. First, when the internal markets are small, PP network strategies are played by both carriers, while for a specific subset of parameters a collusive equilibrium in a HS configuration can be derived. Second, when the size of the internal markets is large, asymmetric configurations, where one carrier chooses a HS strategy and the other chooses a PP strategy, are the only stable equilibria. The result can be used to describe the coexistence of alternative business models that have recently emerged in the aviation industry: the established full-service model based on the HS system and the recent low-cost model based on the PP system.

                          Description:
The coexistence of woody and grassy plants in savannas has often been attributed to a rooting-niche separation (two-layer hypothesis). Water was assumed to be the limiting resource for both growth forms and grasses were assumed to extract water from the upper soil layer and trees and bushes from the lower layers. Woody plant encroachment (i.e. an increase in density of woody plants often unpalatable to domestic livestock) is a serious problem in many savannas and is believed to be the result of overgrazing in 'two-layer systems'. Recent research has questioned the universality of both the two-layer hypothesis and the hypothesis that overgrazing is the cause of woody plant encroachment. We present an alternative hypothesis explaining both tree-grass coexistence and woody plant encroachment in arid savannas. We propose that woody plant encroachment is part of a cyclical succession between open savanna and woody dominance and is driven by two factors: rainfall that is highly variable in space and time, and inter-tree competition. In this case, savanna landscapes are composed of many patches (a few hectares in size) in different states of transition between grassy and woody dominance, i.e. we hypothesize that arid savannas are patch-dynamic systems. We summarize patterns of tree distribution observed in an arid savanna in Namibia and show that these patterns are in agreement with the patch-dynamic savanna hypothesis. We discuss the applicability of this hypothesis to fire-dominated savannas, in which rainfall variability is low and fire drives spatial heterogeneity. We conclude that field studies are more likely to contribute to a general understanding of tree-grass coexistence and woody plant encroachment if they consider both primary (rain and nutrients) and secondary (fire and grazing) determinants of patch properties across different savannas.

                            Description:
The population size structure, growth dynamics and mode of competition among adult trees (>=4 cm DBH) of six abundant tree species in a 5 ha study plot of a temperate deciduous forest in the Dongling Mountains in northern China were investigated using diffusion and growth dynamics models. In the year of 2000, two dominant species, Quercus liaotungensis and Betula dahurica accounted for ca. 68.69% of the total basal area and 52.71% of the total density of adult plants. Q. liaotungensis, Populus davidiana and Acer mono exhibited inverse J-shaped DBH distributions whereas Betula dahurica, B. platyphylla and Salix caprea had unimodal DBH distributions. One-sided interspecific competition was detected between some species combinations at the scale of the 5 ha study plot, and the competitive effect was mainly size-dependent rather than from species-specific interactions with large individuals in the canopy layer out competing smaller individuals in the understory. Symmetric competition was found between Q. liaotungensis and A. mono only. However, considering the straight line relationship of G (t, x) -D(t, x), which suggests that competitive asymmetry is very low or absent, combined with the relatively low mortality of trees with a DBH larger than 4 cm, we speculate that asymmetric interspecific competition was not important in structuring this tree community. Regeneration characteristics of each species are most likely important in regulating species coexistence and stand dynamics in this forest.

A collection of selected famous coding theory papers written in 1974. Easier than collecting the papers individually, plus Berlekamp's comments make interesting reading.

                                                        Book Description

With charming urbanity and lightness of touch, Thierry Paquot argues the case for those few snatched moments of rest taken during the day in an elegantly illustrated book that will make a handsome gift for any occasion. This refreshingly original contribution to the literature of relaxation is a wonderful, sometimes erotic philosophical read that encourages us to cherish the age-old tradition of the siesta, which has ancient roots in antiquity yet is yielding even in Mediterranean lands to the tyranny of the 9-to-5 workday.
Whether a heavy sleep or a five-minute doze, an afternoon nap or a mid-morning daydreaming, the siesta comes in many forms, all of which permit us to relax and reflect in the midst of a hectic daily schedule. More than that, the siesta represents the art of living ― an assertion of human autonomy in an increasingly corporatized and globalized culture. Each chapter muses on a different aspect of the siesta and celebrates the importance of “unconstructed” time as depicted in painting, literature, and philosophy throughout history. These moments of rest are a hidden muse responsible for many of our cultural monuments, and allow an intertwining of the intellectual and the erotic in everyday life.
The book is punctuated with 16 illustrations depicting the art inspired by the siesta. The Art of the Siesta is a celebration of those fleeting moments when the mind is free to reflect, enjoy, and recover. As Paquot writes, “the siesta is a means for us to reclaim our own time, outside the clockmakers’ control. The siesta is our liberator.”

Nice idea, a treatise on the afternoon nap, but ultimately pointless.
