Book Description
Philadelphia is America's most historic city and is well known for Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the Philadelphia Museum of Artone of the finest in the world. Few realize that alongside these treasures, the city is home to more than one hundred permanent collections open to the public, including the largest number of historic house museums in the country. Philadelphia's collections range from the Mummers' Museum and the Academy of Natural Sciences' Dinosaur Hall to the Norman Rockwell paintings at the Atwater Kent Museum and the Franklin Institute, whose walk-through model heart has thrilled visitors for decades. Other museums include the house where Edgar Allan Poe wrote his most famous tales, the colonial naturalist John Bartram's forty-five acre garden in the heart of the city, the innovative Please Touch Museum for young children, and Lemon Hill, one of many exquisite houses in Fairmont Park.
In Museums of Philadelphia: A Guide for Residents and Visitors, Laura C. Waldron provides a brief account of each museum along with highlights and interesting facts about its collection, in addition to its street address, website, phone number, hours of operation, and admission charge. A series of visual codes provide useful information at a glance. A locator map shows every museum, and each entry indicates which museums are nearby to make trip planning easier. Whether you live in the region or are visiting for the first time, this guide will help you make the most of your time in one of America's great cities.

Teens are always fascinated by the idea of running life on their own, free of parental interference. But what happens when reality sets in--when the laundry piles up, the sink overflows, you run out of money for food, and your little sister starts getting very sick? In A Door Near Here, winner of the annual Delacorte Prize for Best First Young Adult Novel, Heather Quarles shows readers that "no parents" is no fun. The mother of the four Donovan kids has taken to her bed and bottle, only stumbling out of her pigsty of a room occasionally in search of more vodka. Katharine, the eldest at 15, tries to keep her brother and sisters clean and fed and in classes, but things are slipping out of her control--especially when 8-year-old Alisa decides to run away from school in search of the kingdom of Narnia. Katharine can't turn to their cold and selfish father for help, so the four siblings cling to their secrets--terrified that an adult, seeing beneath the appearances they are desperately trying to uphold, will alert Social Services. When a kindly teacher begins to ask questions, Katharine panics and lashes out with an accusation that could well destroy this concerned man--only to be met with an act of breathtaking forgiveness. Both teens and adults will find the poignant resolution of this compelling novel utterly engrossing. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Without even noticing, 15-year-old Katherine has become the head of her household. She hasn't had time to notice. Her single mother, an out-of-work alcoholic, has been in bed for weeks, leaving Katherine and her three younger siblings to band together and fend for themselves. But it has gotten harder and harder to maintain any sort of stability. There's no time for housework, food and money are running out, and the kids' teachers are starting to get suspicious. Worst of all, Katherine's youngest sister, Alisa, seems to be losing her grip on reality; she is obsessed with finding a door to the imaginary land of Narnia. And the longer they all struggle to maintain their pretense of normality, the more they have to fear--and to lose.
Customer Reviews:
Family's Downward Spiral.......2007-06-05
Things are going extremely badly in Katherine's life. It really all started back when she was five years old. Her brother Douglas was four and her sister Tracey was three. That's when their father moved away from them and their mother to live with a new girlfriend, soon to be a new wife. That's the first time Katherine can remember her mother going on a drinking binge.
Now it's ten years later and Katherine has one more younger sibling, Alisa, who is eight and has a different father than her siblings--a father whose identity no one knows. Katherine's mother has lost her job, the one thing she has lived for and worked at for years. She has fallen into a deep depression and hasn't left her room for weeks, except to buy alcohol and occasionally to eat. She doesn't recognize her children and is doing nothing to support them.
Katherine, Douglas and Tracey are scared. They know that if anyone finds out about their mother's condition and the way she is neglecting them, they might be taken away. Most likely the three older children would go to their father, but he wants nothing to do with Alisa. They are terrified their little sister will be split up from them and placed in a foster home unless they cover up their mother's problem. But their food is almost gone and their mother is still not working, so they have no money. They are hungry and desperate and can't seem to keep things together at home. Alisa is becoming withdrawn and focused on a fantasy world. Then a teacher at Katherine's school becomes suspicious. He seems to want to help, but can any adult be trusted with this secret?
I liked the way the siblings were able to bond together and support each other when they needed support the most, and I especially liked how protective the three older kids were toward Alisa. I thought this was a pretty realistic portrayal of the lengths kids will go to when they are in a disfunctional situation and all they feel they have is each other. The ending was a bit too easy for my taste, and seemed to break the realism that had been built up over the course of the story.
Creepy, touching, intense..........2007-05-16
Here is a story of what we would all like to hope is what every teenager's life is NOT like. Let us pray that teenagers (smoking ones, by the by) will not be forced to take control of their households due to neglect. In this frighteningly touching and emotional book, that's exactly what happens.
You'll have read the story-line already. Katherine is forced to take over her family when her mother... doesn't. Actually, that's not quite true. Several times in the book, Katherine has the inner argument regarding what to do in such a situation. In what is a very teenage-like frame of mind, she decides not to call social services. While some may find this pig-headedly stupid, it's not. It's simply a teen looking at things in the worst possible way. Katherine fears that if she told someone, social services would split her family up.
There are two parts to this story. The first is the realistic, real-world one. The family is running out of money. Three teens and an elementary school kid are trying to live their lives as though nothing has changed, but with money, food, and resources running out (the book opens with bad plumbing, and has a part with no electricity), things are becoming considerably tougher to handle. Here you see the ties of family (which bind both way, when it comes to the mom) in their best and worst ways.
The other aspect of this story is the fantastical one. Alisa, the youngest member of the family (and the only one born to a different, unknown father), is becoming obsessed with C.S. Lewis' land of Narnia and wants to go there. She believes this is the answer to her problems and to her family's problems. Regarding her mother's physical and mental state, the eight-year old writes in a letter that she wants Aslan (Narnia's king) to help her. Alisa's story is chilling and sad, because through Katherine's eyes we see how she seems to be falling apart. Katherine is of course concerned, and ultimately, Alisa's obsession leads to the climax, one that will leave you with tears in your eyes.
While the religious aspect is one people love to bring up (same for the Narnia series, which is sort of the origin here), I found that it was neither too obvious nor too heavy. It was not insulting to either religious or non-religious people. This book is simply a piece of fiction. Let us remember that, though there is much with the religion teacher in the book.
"A Door Near Here" is a great book. It's that simple. It's well-written, has the perfect amount of feeling and emotion, and is interesting. There's an air of mystery to it, but mostly the reader is just sucked in and can't stop reading. The characters are so vivid and real, it's almost like you know them. From the first line, you're hooked.
Highly recommended to all teenagers. It's a wonderful book.
A very good book.......2007-03-15
This book is beautifully written with a heartwenching plot. The story pulls you in as Katherine (the oldest of four kids) struggles to keep the household working. However, I could not enjoy the book as much as I would like. The main character (Katherine) was not a very likeable character. Her naiveté and ignorance concerning her mother was annoying and her selfish ideas to keep all help at bay, even at the expense of her siblings made me want to shout at her. However, the fact that the author created such feelings in me is a sign of great ability. Above all, the subplot with Alisa and her search for Narnia and Aslan was sweet and I was very happy to see the religious overtones. C.S. Lewis' books are so religious that it would be a disgrace to the series and his memory to not have the subject brought up.
a Door near here..........2006-10-26
Being the oldest daughter of a sudden alchoholic mother isn't all that easy. Katherine, being the oldest, struggles to keep her family of three other siblings together. This book shows what hope can do, and not to give up. It deals with real issues and I strongly recommend it to anyone who doesn't beleive in miracles, for this is a book that surely portrays a miracle in the making.
apparently the kid's like it... but I dont.......2006-07-05
Katherine's mother lost her job and decides to drown her sorrows in the bottom of a bottle. And then another. And another. Soon she becomes an alcoholic, only leaving bed for food, more booze, and to go to the bathroom. Katherine is left to take care of herself and 3 siblings, making meals, making sure they get to school, and hiding her mom by telling everyone she is "sick." Soon the food and money begins to run out and a nosy teacher runs in.
I thought this book was stupid. If my mother was using my dad's child support on her booze and not feeding me and my sister I would tell everyone, teachers, police, social workers. I'd make sure she was locked up.
Also, the end of the book the crazy kid who kept trying to run away to Narnia never got help. SHE NEEDS HELP!!! SHE'S SEEING THINGS!!! Instead of getting real help they assume that her looking for Aslan was really searching for God. Yeah right.

Customer Reviews:
The best!.......2002-08-31
I recently completed my honors project for Dr. Tidwell at University of Toronto, and took two years worth of his organic chemistry courses... I have to say that they were the most enjoyable and understandable courses I have taken in my life, in fact I completed these courses in the top percentile of my class with very little studying on my own- I learned everything in his lectures! He wrote the authoritative book on Ketene chemistry, which all the researchers in that field use, and I used on my honors project. I think that he has a very good skill in presenting concepts in physical organic chemistry that has been honed with hard work over many years, and is also due to an obvious love of chemistry. I can't tell you about this book because I haven't read it yet, but when I can get the money (a little pricey for your average canadian graduate student...), I will hopefully complete my review.

Book Description
This monograph presents a comprehensive coverage of three-dimensional topology, as well as exploring some of its frontiers. Many important applied problems of mechanics and theoretical physics can be reduced to algorithmic problems of three-dimensional topology, which can then be solved using computers. Although much progress in this field has been made in recent years, these results have not been readily accessible to a wider audience up to now. This book is based on courses the authors have given over several years, and summarises the most outstanding achievements of modern computer topology.
Audience: This book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers whose work involves such diverse disciplines as physics, mathematics, computer programmes for spline theory and its applications, geometrical modelling, geometry, and topology. The illustrations by A.T. Fomenko, drawn especially for this work, add great value and extra appeal.

Totally Bewitching!.......2001-06-23
Unlike the first reviewer, I fell in love with "The Witching Time". The author, Jean Stubbs, manages to evade the cliches that seem generally inherent in a story line that revolves around witchcraft. Sure, there is the obligatory stone circle and the fight between the the forces of Light and Dark, but it's done with intelligence and a lot of humor. The main character of Imogen Lacey is someone you can relate to. She's good looking without being intimidating...intelligent, but capable of making bad choices...and all-in-all, a very likeable person. In fact, all of Jean Stubb's characters are fully formed individuals. Some you like...some you hate, just like in real life. As for the village of Haraldstone, well, I'd live there in a heartbeat. And to give Stubbs her due, she does manage to make the reader feel as if they DO indeed live among the inhabitants of this quirky little hamlet. This is more than a story about witches. It's a rich blending of the fantastic, mixed with a good old fashioned "Who-Done-It". Take these elements and combine them with a touch of romance and the meaning of true friendship and what you come up with is story telling at it's best. Yes, this may be light-hearted fluff to some, but if you are in the market for an entirely enjoyable mental vacation, then this book has your name on it. I personally rate this in my top 10 books of last year. I work at a library and read over 400 books last year, so this is no small recommendation. At the least, if you are still not certain, go to your local library and check it out. I think you are in for a most pleasant surprise. Enjoy.
A Well Intentioned Let Down.......2000-03-27
This author writes well, and manages to set up the opening situation with a grieving woman who decides to move and start a new life. The manner in which the witches become involved in her life seemed to be intentionally unemphasized, the main character's reactions rather washed out. From there, her descriptions of the characters and making the plot move forward are wonderful. Unfortunately, it seems as though the author is not truly emphasizing the role of the "good" witches so much as the "feminine" role, much more general. It just seemed as though the reader is set up for something exciting and meaningful to happen at the climax, and the climax is over before it starts. Leaving the reader puzzled and unsure of what has just happened. In my opinion, it was a feeling that I had been prevented from completing the transformation into the world of the book. As before stated, the author is technically very talented at description, but the story line seemed shaky, and perhaps the author needed to do some more research into the subject at hand.
