Excellent!!.......2002-05-20
Every page has a color picture on it! Divided by neighborhoods, it has great maps and walking tours. Excursions outside of Miami to National Parks and Fort Lauderdale are included. The different islands of the Keys are discussed in detail. There is also a section on hotels by price range and restaurants.
What a gorgeous book!.......2000-04-12
Usually with a travel guide, you need to use your imagination. You can't actually see what attractions look like, the maps aren't always clear and the descriptions are as short and succinct as possible.
That is definitely not the case with this book which is stuffed chock full of gorgeous pictures. The maps are colorful and detailed. Full pages are spent on various attractions and excursions that in other guideboks are written up in a mere paragraph.
If you're looking for a hotel recommendation or a write up on a place to eat, this probably isn't the right book for you. But, if you want to know what to do aside from sleeping and eating, buy this book.

More Clovermead, please!.......2004-06-30
The only bad thing about this book is that it ends.
Clovermead lives in a wondrously imaginative, entrancing world filled with action and adventure. She is a Satisfying Character. The people and the world of this book linger in your imagination long after you have shut its covers.
One can only hope it is The First In A Series.
Clovermead - David Randall.......2004-06-29
I found this book thoroughly entertaining and highly recommend it to anyone in the mood for a whimsical, exciting, articulate read. David Randall clearly has a gift for creative writing. The quality of Clovermead brings to mind fantasy classics like Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles and Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. Can't wait for a sequel.
Rousing, delightful and thoughtful.......2004-06-28
Clovermead, a twelve year old girl with tomboyish fantasies, in a wild land before firearms, is soon swept up in malevolent plots and a raging war --between rival kingdoms and rival gods --of which, astonishingly, only she proves to be the key to resolution. Her once beloved father fails her as a protector and as a moral example. Her new barbarian friend Sorrel is really kind and helpful, but no omnipotent superman. Snuff, the evil priest of the evil Bear god, Ursus, is ominously sardonic, but it's no joke when he's after Clovermead. The monstrous Bear god is genuinely nightmarish when his tooth is in Clovermead's mouth, and his will begins to take over Clovermead's mind. High up in the icy north, the benevolent goddess, Lady Moon, does not directly drive events, but...? The story begins in Clovermead's childhood home in the chill of autumn, and unrolls in desperate flights through dangerous wilds and more dangerous people in the terrible cold of winter, in the shadow of the Bear. It warms us, too, when Clovermead is at last under the covers in a safe, warm bed before a toasty fire.
David Randall can devise and tell a rousing tale, fantastic but realistic. His characters are no wooden emblems, but are complex and divided as we are. (Even the Bear god develops an admiration for Clovermead, who is growing up fast.) His language is varied, supple and effective; he writes neither down nor up for readers who may be twelve, eighteen or eighty. His evocations of nature, and hints about morality and religion, don't obtrude in the tale, but deepen it. A seizing story. A fine book!
Fun and engaging.......2004-06-02
Clovermead is an excellent read. The heroine is both believable and likable and really does seem to be the age she is written as. Everything she does makes sense and has its own logic - the decisions she makes stem from her character, not from the demands of the plot. This is true of most of the adults in the book as well. The book is also very well-paced. Digressions into the backgrounds of other characters are also interesting and flow naturally from the story.
The surprise at the end didn't actually surprise me, but it should still be a genuine surprise for those in its targeted age group. And for the kids who do get it beforehand, they will probably feel proud of themselves for getting it, and not let down by figuring it out early.
Overall, it's a good, tight, and engrossing narrative. It feels neither contrived nor cobbled together like many other fantasy books I have read.
a surprisingly good read.......2004-05-29
When I first picked up this book, I wasn't sure what to expect. The market has been flooded with heroine-takes-charge kind of books which, after a while, tend to run together.
Randall has a beautiful way with words; reading Clovermead is a pleasure, not just an adventure. Clovermead, our protagonist, is well-drawn and engaging. The overarching battle in this story is one between the nuns of Lady Moon and the bear-priests of Lord Ursus, but everyone, including Clovermead, get swept up in the conflict leading to unforeseen results.
The heros, the enemies, and those that play both sides are all complex characters, and the plot line doesn't miss a beat.
Overall, a very fun read.

Book Description
Phoma is a genus of fungi within the Coelomycetes. These fungi are commonly and frequently recovered in culture from all ecological situations, but are very difficult to identify. There has been a great need for a practical manual to aid such identification, and this book will fill that gap. It provides line drawings and keys for the identification of common pathogenic and saprotrophic species of Phoma in vitro, with references to additional diagnostic literature and documentation of the numerous synonyms formerly used in the phytopathological literature.

Book Description
Cycloaddition reactions are among the most important tools for synthesis in organic chemistry, since these reactions are vital to the modern synthesis of natural products and biologically active substances.
Metal catalysis plays an increasingly important role in these reactions, often allowing several stereocenters to be selectively created and integrated in the target molecules. Kobayashi and Jorgensen's handbook provides numerous examples of metal-catalyzed reactions, including [2+1], [3+2] and [4+2] cycloadditions. Important reactions such as carbo- and hetero-Diels-Alder, carbocyclic, cyclopropanation and 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions are discussed. A large number of experimental procedures gives a concrete idea of the use of metal-catalyzed cycloaddition reactions in modern synthesis.
The book is aimed at chemists in industry or academia, who want to effectively use cycloadditions in their work.

Paperback. Demonstrates the wide scope of cycloaddition reactions, including the Diels-Alder reaction, the ene reaction, 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions and [2+2] cycloadditions in organic synthesis. The author, a leading exponent of the subject, illustrates the ways in which they can be employed in the synthesis of a wide range of carbocyclic and heterocyclic compounds, including a variety of natural products of various types. Special attention is given to intramolecular reactions, which often provide a rapid and efficient route to polycyclic compounds, and to the stereochemistry of the reactions, including recent and developing work on enantioselective synthesis.

Book Description
This volume contains the 90 papers presented at the 3rd IFAC Symposium on Modelling and Control in Biomedical Systems held in Warwick, UK from 23-26 March 1997. Significant work in the field of biomedical systems analysis and design is taking place throughout the world and the opportunities for technological interchanges offered by symposia like this one are extremely valuable for the progress and stability of effort and vision in this important human-centred field.
The symposium was multi- and inter-disciplinary in nature with the choice of topics solicited covering the major systems' components and functions of complex physiology. The remit was also extended, on this occasion, beyond mammalian physiology to that of biological systems. Therefore, a special session was devoted to the modelling and control of botanical systems with the aim of providing an exchange of ideas with biomathematicians.

Book Description
Where the boundary lies between falsehood and fiction, between an actual untruth and an admitted invention, has set off many debates in intellectual circles. In classical studies, this issue has gained prominence through the upsurge of interest in the ancient novel and through recent work on the rhetorical character of ancient historiography. This pathfinding collection of essays charts the borderland between falsehood and fiction in the ancient world, especially by considering how far "lying" was distinguished from "fiction" at different periods and in different genres. The areas covered are early Greek poetry (E. L. Bowie), Plato (Christopher Gill), Greek and Roman historiography (J. L. Moles and T. P. Wiseman), and the Greek and Roman novel (J. R. Morgan and Andrew Laird). Michael Wood and D. C. Feeney discuss the literary critical questions involved and draw connections with contemporary debate. All Greek and Latin passages are translated into English, and the collection is designed to be accessible to students of literature and history generally, as well as to Classicists.
Book Description
Christopher Meyer was Ambassador to the United States from 1997 to 2003, during which time he was an eyewitness to and participant in the events following 9/11 and the preparations for the Iraq war. A riveting and candid memoir of life behind the diplomatic scenes, Meyer's book is an honest account of what he saw, what he heard, and how he felt.
Customer Reviews:
D C Confidences.......2007-01-03
An interesting insight into to the world of diplomacy and politics. Christopher Meyer's biting yet diplomatic comments on the behaviour of our leading politicians and their accolites, including our own Prime Minister and the President of USA, proved an absorbing read which I found difficult to put down!
A British View of the Inside of the American Presidency.......2006-03-28
This book has two strong points to recommend it.
First, with the poor quality and lack of depth in modern news reporting you don't know the story until the books come out.
Second, this book is written by a Briton who was closely associated with the Blair and Bush governments while the decision were being made regarding the war in Iraq. This is important because as a non-American Mr. Meyer doesn't have his own political axe to grind. He is neither a Bush hater nor a Bush lover who thinks that Bush can do no wrong.
One critical issue that he addresses is the decision to invade Iraq. Most of the Bush haters seem to believe that the president came to office with the intent of a war in Iraq. Mr. Meyer says no, but the details are too complex to list in a short review like this one.
All in all, this is a most interesting book that presents an outside view of the American presidential seen. It is well written, a fairly easy read, and seems fairly balanced.
THE INSIDER.......2006-01-20
Sir Christopher Meyer resigned as British ambassador in Washington just before the start of hostilities in Iraq. He has started a new career as chairman of the Press Complaints Commission, but his frequent appearances on television since he left the diplomatic service have been almost exclusively in connexion with his privileged insights into the origins of the war. The title of the book is a slight misnomer - most of it is indeed about his time as ambassador to the USA, but the first few chapters are partly concerned with his early life and career and partly with a personal issue that burns him up, namely his second wife's grisly experiences with German justice in obtaining access to her children from her first marriage.
In Britain the book has given rise to a good deal of comment for supposedly disparaging or even attacking prominent politicians, and I noticed that he had to appear before a parliamentary committee to respond to such points. These allegations are simply balderdash, and the politicians concerned have no business being so thin skinned in my own opinion. John Prescott's malapropisms are the stuff of legend, and the ones that Meyer records are not only relevant but vintage efforts too. They make Prescott look ridiculous, but nowhere near as ridiculous as his own over-reaction did. In any case Meyer's overall assessment of Prescott is fair and far from unfavourable, and he is not afraid to tell a similar story about himself - after three years of shuffling along presentation-lines he was overcome with a kind of catatonic amnesia, forgot his wife's name and introduced her to the puzzled grandees by various alternatives including `Christopher'. As for the other seemingly contentious matters, I find it difficult to imagine that even Jack Straw himself supposes he has very many groupies, and to find anything sensational about an account of seeing John Major partly dressed sets the qualifying-bar for sensation as low as I can ever recall. In fact the book seems to me conspicuously fair-minded in general. A British civil servant is required to be professionally neutral, but even when I knew him 40 years ago I never recall Christopher showing any particular political inclination. He has a strong streak of irreverence, but he is not a committed scoffer either. He has a fairly traditional sense of awe in respect of Churchill for instance, he was obviously impressed with Mrs Thatcher, and Blair's strongest opponents would be hard put to it to deny that he is what Meyer finds him to be - a bit of a genius in some ways.
The style of writing is light and informal, at least until we get to the really serious chapter entitled `War'. It is entirely free of the portentousness that one tends to associate with Whitehall mandarins called Sir Hector this and Sir Herbert that, but there was a time when no senior civil servant would have used `aftermath' to mean after-effect or `cataclysmic' to mean disastrous, just as there was a time when no eminent publishing house would have put a full stop in the name Harry S Truman. The early chapters are interesting in their own right, and the author comes across basically as the man I used to know all those decades ago, even looking 20 years younger than he is. I'm in no position to form an opinion about the clearly distressing issue of his wife's treatment by the German legal process, apparently supported by its British counterpart. Everyone seems to be wrong except Catherine, but for all I know that may be the truth of it. When it comes to the medical problem that he discloses near the end of the book, all I can do is to offer him my sincerest wishes for a full and speedy recovery.
The climactic section of the book is obviously the build-up to war in Iraq. Whatever one thinks of the ambassador's conclusions, this is an account such as nobody else could have given. This is the full-dress professional writing now, and the style changes noticeably. He sees reason to suspect that future historians will not deal very kindly with Bush and Blair over the issue, but however that turns out future historians will have a document to work on that they had no right to expect. Far from attacking the politicians I feel that Christopher gives them a good deal too much benefit of a good deal too much doubt. Be that as it may, he presents his evidence and his reasoning with scrupulous fairness and admirable clarity. He sees Blair as being convinced of the case for pre-emptive action before Bush was, he does not buy the usual caricature of Bush (nor do I), and he finds against allegations that war was decided on from the outset and the rest was lies. He fairly obviously believes that Blair's basic analysis is right but that the war was botched through haste. He was there and I wasn't, of course, but I wonder whether he has also - like the Blairs as he rightly says - been seduced by the proximity and glamour of America, to which he was a latecomer. Blair's stories about the WMD's take some explaining away, and it surely will not do to say that all the Washington hawks sincerely believed that Saddam was implicated in 9/11. What does `sincere' mean in this context? To me it means that they were letting their passions run away with their brains: a moment's rational reflection would surely have told anyone that Saddam was not likely to give assistance to an organisation that liked him little better than it liked America and that would give him problems he didn't need at a time when he didn't need them. I also wonder how this `sincerity' squares with the suspicion, stated some chapters earlier, that the attack on Iraq was displacement activity - Al Qaeda were elusive, so bomb someone and be perceived to be `doing something'. That is a view that seems more than persuasive to me.
This is the main section of the book, but there is a lot more to it, and the author's mindset makes his way of telling it all illuminating as well as highly readable. The squawks of outrage seem to have died down and I hope he took no notice of them. If Christopher has anything more to say on the Iraq war between adjudicating on press complaints, I shall be more than interested to hear it.

Former New York Times Atlanta bureau chief Applebome argues that the South is the region which is increasingly defining the whole United States. The roots of the major national debates on conservative politics, race, guns and states' rights are in the South--debates which the South once was losing, but has now reshaped. In a chapter on George Wallace, Applebome traces the 1994 Republican take-over of Congress back to Wallace's racially charged campaigns that lost the white South for the Democratic party, changing the American political landscape. Applebome makes race the central issue, but also explores other southern influences like country music and Southern Baptism, and lets Southerners talk for themselves.
Book Description
In “one of the best portrayals of the South in years” (Washington Post), the Atlanta bureau chief of the New York Times travels from catfish farms and neo-Confederate gatherings to casinos and country music festivals and examines the reasons behind the region’s growing influence. Index.
Customer Reviews:
Well written, but extremely biased.......2004-12-16
Mr. Applebome is excellent in his writing (I am a writer myself, for whatever that's worth) and has a good eye for appearances and a facility for describing them well.
Having said that, I must add that his political prejudices stick out like sore thumbs. An earlier reviewer commented that Applebome "doesn't like Republicans." I'll add an amendment to that: He doesn't like white Southerners, unless they happen to share his northeastern liberal views. His attitude toward said white Southerners is smug and condescending in the extreme, i.e., he is often at great pains to describe in sniggering terms the hairstyles worn by white Southern males, and also how they dress. He seldom does this when describing Southern blacks, whom he sees as eternally downtrodden and put upon. Also notice that he often quotes Southern whites literally, being careful to include grammatical errors and "amusing" (read: ignorant) regionalisms. He does not do this with the speech of Southern blacks.
To sum up, he is a good writer, but he makes little attempt at any kind of objectivity or balance.
Home Is Where The Heart Is.......2004-01-23
Enough has been said in the previous reviews of this book, either for or against, to give people a sense of how others feel about it. My one contention with the whole work is this, Mr. Applebome, a Yankee living in the South, is an outsider looking in. To me, the book is the equivalent of me, a native Georgian, walking into your house and saying "I like the painting over the mantle, but the color of the walls is atrocious." In the end, it doesn't matter what I think of your home, you're the one living there. The times I've been "up yonder", I've quickly realized how different Northerners were from Southerners, but, since I don't live there, I don't worry how "those people" think and do things. One review recommended this book to people thinking of moving to the South, if you're one of those people wanting to move down here, just remember, you're only visiting, don't try to change us or our ways, it won't work. If you want to know why, it's for this simple reason, a homemade cat-head bisquit stuffed with ham, egg and cheese (with extra salt just in case you didn't get enough in the ham and eggs while cooking them) will always taste better than a bagel with cream cheese. If the State of the Union and where we are headed and how things are looking country-wise is important to you, you might, and I stress "might" enjoy this book. If you only concern yourself with your own life and your worries don't extend past your own front yard (i.e. you mind your own business and let the rest of the world take care of itself) then pass it by.
Prescient, persuasive, provocative and astute........2003-06-11
Mixing fact and anecdote with a keen eye and ear for the rhymes and reasons that shape and have shaped the fabric of the american south, Applebome's book acheives a kind of birds eye view of a world whose influence has been obscured in myth and misunderstanding. Applebome clearly knows his territory well, and has put in the miles of travel and years of study to reach a level of insight that goes beyond anything else I have read on the subject. His polymath's approach includes a wide spectrum of topics from the political to the musical--and he shows us how and why the south has emerged from its volatile history to a place where it now stands at the vanguard of so many trends and developments in our society. This is readable and entertaining scholarship from someone who has lived with his subject and come to know it like few others. Very highly recommended.
Doesn't have a clue about the true South.......2002-07-02
This book was discovered in the bargain bin at a book outlet and after reading it I know why it was there. The author is a yankee who lived for a time in the South and now knows all about being Southern. It made for a good laugh everytime he used the term Neo-Confederates for Southerners who honored and celebrated their Confederate heritage.
The only thing he seems to understand about the South is how important Southern politics has become in America but this is not worth reading this book.
Save your time and money and pass on this one. I paid ...too much. One of the few books I tossed away.
Thoughtful - for a Yankee.......2001-08-14
Mr.Applebome, time in The South and Southern wife notwithstanding, is a Yankee, and, therefore, simply cannot help himself; he must toil to make the world go round. As a Southerner and a member of some of the groups at which he looks down that Yankee patrician nose- no, sorry, not the Klan - I know what it is like to spend your life having to be twice as good to be thought half as much of because of a Southern accent - fortunately, it wasn't that difficult. Applebome got it right very early in the book when, quoting Faulkner, he said "you wouldn't understand, you'd have to be born there." He was right, and he doesn't understand.

A Must-Have for Environmental Economists.......2000-04-22
This is a book that every environmental economist should have in collection. It covers a wide range of issues from the many aspects of biodiversity to its assessment and conservation. Its content is systematic and somewhat technical, and yet accessible for non-biologists. I use this book as an aid for research, and I've found that the case studies to be quite helpful.

An invaluable addition to the "biodiversity" bookshelf.......1998-10-21
"Biodiverity II" is a fascinating and important collection of essays on nearly every facet of biodiversity. What makes this book so rich is that each essay is written by the leading expert in his or her field. And you don't need to be a scientist to enjoy Biodiversity II--I'm not, and I found it very accessible.
