    Book Description

This book is based on proceedings from a February 2004 Santa Fe Institute workshop. Its contributing chapter authors treat the ecology of predator-prey interactions and food web theory, structure, and dynamics, joining researchers who also work on complex systems and on large nonlinear networks from the points of view of other sub-fields within ecology. Food webs play a central role in the debates on the role of complexity in stability, persistence, and resilience. Better empirical data and the exploding interest in the subject of networks across social, physical, and natural sciences prompted creation of this volume. The book explores the boundaries of what is known of the relationship between structure and dynamics in ecological networks and defines directions for future developments in this field.

My book,"Fastback beach" was about three boys named Larry, Spider, and Miles. These three boys are about to commit a crime. Therefore, the crime would be to burglarize a black, shinny, and sleek convertable mustang. In order for there plan to be successful they had to comsume a slim jim. As a result, their plan turned out to be successful. The consequeces in this crime was that when they took off with the convertable mustang, they all went on a cruise to the beach in Florida. While their adventure, Spider began to do donuts on the moist beach sand. While doing the donuts on the sand they stopped the mustang in order for them to exchange seats. Miles yelled out "Stop" and they did. As soon as they stopped a light shinned in Miles' face as a deep voice said, "Kid's hurt. Call an ambulance." Miles heared someone talking on the radio. Miles Jon Derkach was charged with theft over five-thousand dollars. Pleaded guilty. After this they were all sentenced to serve one-thousand hours in communitty service. During this time, they had the tome to relize what the had done

          Book Description

Mutualistic interactions between ants and plants involve rewards offered by plants and services performed by ants in a mutually advantageous relationship. The rewards are principally food and/or nest sites, and ants in turn perform a number of services for plants: They disperse and plant seeds; they protect foliage, buds, and reproductive structures from enemies such as herbivores and seed predators; they fertilize plants with essential nutrients; and they may sometimes function as pollinators. In this book Professor Beattie reviews the fascinating natural history of ant-plant interactions, discusses the scientific evidence for the mutualistic nature of these relationships, and reaches some conclusions about the ecological and evolutionary processes that mold them. Mutualisms involving single pairs of species are the exception rather than the rule; usually arrays of ant species interact with arrays of plant species. Variation generated by this complexity results in variation in the function and the effectiveness of the mutualism. The result is that at any given time and place some or all of the interacting species may experience full, intermediate, or episodic benefits, or no benefits at all. This highly dynamic picture is unlikely to be confined to ant-plant mutualisms, but rather may be representative of a host of other kinds of species interactions. This important work is the first broad and thorough treatment of the subject of ant-plant mutualisms. Its natural history, experimental approach, and integration with contemporary evolutionary and ecological literature will appeal to a wide variety of biologists.

                Book Description

This book contains proceedings from the Seventh International Conference on Domain Decomposition Methods, held at Pennsylvania State University in October 1993. The term "domain decomposition" has for nearly a decade been associated with the partly iterative, partly direct algorithms explored in the proceedings of this conference. Noteworthy trends in the current volume include progress in dealing with so-called "bad parameters" in elliptic partial differential equation problems, as well as developments in partial differential equations outside of the elliptically-dominated framework. Also described here are convergence and complexity results for novel discretizations, which bring with them new challenges in the derivation of appropriate operators for coarsened spaces. Implementations and architectural considerations are discussed, as well as partitioning tools and environments. In addition, the book describes a wide array of applications, from semiconductor device simulation to structural mechanics to aerodynamics. Presenting many of the latest results in the field, this book offers readers an up-to-date guide to the many facets of the theory and practice of domain decomposition.

                    Book Description

Scientists and engineers are increasingly making use of simulation methods to solve problems which are insoluble by analytical techniques. Monte Carlo methods which make use of probabilistic simulations are frequently used in areas such as numerical integration, complex scheduling, queueing networks, and large-dimensional simulations. This collection of papers arises from a conference held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in 1994. The conference brought together researchers across a range of disciplines whose interests include the theory and application of these methods. This volume provides a timely survey of this field and the new directions in which the field is moving.

                          Book Description

Conference held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, March 1997.

For the first time, the official published version of this proceedings is available only in CD-ROM format. SIAM decided to provide the proceedings in this format to allow authors to expand their presentations, to allow for the use of color, and to provide a format that is searchable and easily portable.

The papers included on this CD-ROM reflect the content of the meeting. The main themes of the conference included combinatorial optimization, data-parallel languages, large-scale parallel applications, message-padding, molecular modeling, parallel I/O, parallel libraries, parallel software tools, parallelizing compilers, particle simulations, problem-solving environments, and sparse matrix computations.

The conference focused on open questions and future trends in computer architecture and software support for parallel computers. It provided a unique forum for researchers interested in scientific computing issues associated with applied mathematics to present and discuss these issues as they relate to parallel computing in science and engineering.

                              Book Description

This book brings together contributed papers presenting new results covering different areas of applied mathematics and scientific computing.

Firstly, four invited lectures give state-of-the-art presentations in the fields of numerical linear algebra, shape preserving approximation and singular perturbation theory.

Then an overview of numerical solutions to skew-Hamiltonian and Hamiltonian eigenvalue problems in system and control theory is given by Benner, Kressner and Mehrmann. The important issue of structure preserving algorithms and structured condition numbers is discussed.

Costantini and Sampoli review the basic ideas of the abstract schemes and show that they can be used to solve any problem concerning the construction of spline curves subject to local constraints.

Kvasov presents a novel approach in solving the problem of shape preserving spline interpolation. Formulating this problem as a differential multipoint boundary value problem for hyperbolic and biharmonic tension splines he considers its finite difference approximation.

Miller and Shishkin consider the Black-Scholes equation that, for some values of the parameters, may be a singularly perturbed problem. They construct a new numerical method, on an appropriately fitted piecewise-uniform mesh, which is parameter-uniformly convergent.

                                  Book Description

A train station becomes a police station; lands held sacred by Apaches and Mexicanos are turned into commercial and residential zones; freeway construction hollows out a community; a rancho becomes a retirement community—these are the kinds of spatial transformations that concern Mary Pat Brady in Extinct Lands, Temporal Geographies, a book bringing together Chicana feminism, cultural geography, and literary theory to analyze an unusual mix of Chicana texts through the concept of space. Beginning with nineteenth-century short stories and essays and concluding with contemporary fiction, this book reveals how Chicana literature offers a valuable theoretics of space.

The history of the American Southwest in large part entails the transformation of lived, embodied space into zones of police surveillance, warehouse districts, highway interchanges, and shopping malls—a movement that Chicana writers have contested from its inception. Brady examines this long-standing engagement with space, first in the work of early newspaper essayists and fiction writers who opposed Anglo characterizations of Northern Sonora that were highly detrimental to Mexican Americans, and then in the work of authors who explore border crossing. Through the writing of Sandra Cisneros, Cherríe Moraga, Terri de la Peña, Norma Cantú, Monserrat Fontes, Gloria Anzaldúa, and others, Brady shows how categories such as race, gender, and sexuality are spatially enacted and created—and made to appear natural and unyielding. In a spatial critique of the war on drugs, she reveals how scale—the process by which space is divided, organized, and categorized—has become a crucial tool in the management and policing of the narcotics economy.

This book makes a significant contribution to an understanding of the literary history, social evolution, and spatial definition of the Southwest.
