This did not help me at all. It is filled with definitions that don't help (heroin?) and is missing definitions that might (LDC MDC Systems theory, horizontal/vertical integration, etc.) I would give it a zero if I could.

I should have known better than to purchase the Compass Guide to Michigan. I owned a travel bookstore for 9 years and I chose not to carry this series in my store. Lots of pretty pictures, lots of history (yes, that is important), but not enough practical info. Plus, these guides are heavy! I think the only other guide available was the Moon Handbook to Michigan. Moon Handbooks are wonderful guides, but they are not updated often enough and the shopper must check the publication date; in this case I think it was 2002. So if you are looking for a lot of information about lodging, restaurants and activities, the Compass Guide is not the answer. Hopefully, Moon will update their handbook to Michigan soon.

                    Book Description

It is 1969, and Ruba has just moved to Mississippi from Haiti to live with her Grandmother Jones. This world is very different from her old life, where she spent days beachcombing with Ba, her maternal grandmother, and learning the lore of magic and history that she holds close. But magic isn't welcome in her new grandmother's house. Ruba struggles to understand her strange surroundings and the hate that comes at her from some of the white people in town. It isn't long before Ruba finds herself threatened by the KKK and drawn into the fight for civil rights. But a hurricane barreling toward the coast changes everything, bringing Ruba and her family a measure of justice and a new acceptance.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing and powerful story.......2006-07-12

Ruba lived in Haiti with her maternal grandmother, Ruba Cleo, who taught Ruba the traditions of the women warriors of Dahoney, Africa, from whom they are descended. But when Ruba Cleo dies battling a storm sent by the Stormwitch, Zashar, Ruba has to move to Mississippi to live with her paternal grandmother, Maizie Jones.

But the Mississippi of 1969 is a far different world than Haiti. It's an explosive world of civil rights and desegregation and the Ku Klux Klan. It's a world where a black person could be killed for crossing the wrong person. And Grandmother Jones is very different from Ruba Cleo, or at least she seems so at first. She wants Ruba to become a good Christian and to give up the "witchcraft" she learned from Ruba Cleo. She also wants Ruba to keep her head down and say "Yes, ma'am" or "Yes, sir" when talking to a white person. But Ruba, a descendent of proud African warriors, can't do either, as much as she wants to please Grandmother Jones. Soon, Ruba finds herself fighting evil on two fronts, as she runs afoul of the local Klan wizard, just as the Stormwitch approaches with the most powerful storm that Ruba has ever known.

A powerful story told in an accessible way, Stormwitch brings to life both the devastation of Hurricane Camille and the horrors of segregation. It has elements of both fantasy and historical fiction. It's a stroke of brilliance to show a segregated Mississippi through the eyes of a strong black female, who not only grew up away from the culture of segregation and discrimination, but who has the pride that comes from knowing that she is descended from a long line of female warriors. The contrast makes the horror of being a black person in segregated Mississippi that much more real. And through Ruba's grandmother and friends, we also see the perspective of the people who did grow up there, people who are trying to change things in their own way.

In the wake of last year's Hurricane Katrina, the story of another hurricane that devastated the Gulf coast is so much more meaningful than the author could have envisioned when she wrote this book.

5 out of 5 stars Linda Zielinski, Children's Picturebook Price Guide.......2006-05-25

Being from the South, this is a perfect book. A great blend of culture, history, and family. I loved the way it was written and look forward to the new book by Susan Vaught.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-08-06

This is not a fantasy containing the usual elements. Ruba's journey from Haiti to Mississippi is absorbing, her gradual mastery of her powers fascinating. The book touches on civil rights as well as magic, and the final confrontation in which Ruba is facing the violence of human beings and of the weather is extraordinary. Strongly recommended for reluctant readers of middle grade age, sure to appeal to every reader who likes fantasy and a sense of historical time and place, this is a must for all school library shelves.

5 out of 5 stars A book that should not be missed.......2005-06-30

It's not often you find a gem of a book like STORMWITCH. It is a fabulous mixture of magic and historical fact. From the first time I picked this story up, it was a book that I could not put down. I highly recommend STORMWITCH to all readers, whether you like fantasy, action/adventure, history, or just an incredible read that you can't walk away from.

5 out of 5 stars Good empowering story.......2005-04-09

It's hard to find non-stereotypical stories with elements of fantasy that include strong African Americans. Ruba is wonderful, empowering character with great strength. Although the book is set in the South I appreciate the author's inclusion of Ruba's Dahomey tribal roots- that she is the last of the female warriors from a once fierce African tribe.

The text was easy to read, the story was exciting and the author doesn't tread tired old territory when including incidents of racism.

Finally, a fresh approach and an engaging story that allows my daughters to see girls like themselves in the spotlight! Stormwitch has been a good addition to our personal library. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Surpassed my expectations!.......2007-09-29

I could go over and over about the exceptional quality of the content presented in the Feynman Lectures, but I think millions of readers have already taken care of that. So I'm gonna focus on something that really distinguishes this edition from the others (besides, of course, all the corrections made to the previous editions): the physical characteristics of the books.

I was impressed at the quality of this collection. The books are all covered with a smooth red fabric wich really gives them a sophisticated look. They will look great anywhere. I placed my collection on the top of a shelf and I gotta tell you, that big red box really stands out.

The books are somewhat big and heavy, but that doesn't interferes with a confortable reading. You're not gonna have to place it on a table while reading it.

Now, I know this review may have sounded quite futile (why the hell is this fellow talking about how the book looks!?), but since everyone knows about how great and enlightening the Lectures are, I thougt I'd go on about some details that rather we admmit it or not, we care about.

So this is it: these books are beautiful, provide a comfortable reading, and they're THE FEYNMAN LECTURES ON PHYSICS!

4 out of 5 stars open your mind.......2007-07-30

I wasn't a natural in math or physics, but I was interested in learning more than one might learn at a junior college's first year physics program. And so I bought these books.

Feynman has a very interesting way of looking at things. Sometimes it is so unique that it opened my eyes to a whole different way of seeing problems presented in a more traditional fashion. A real conceptual eye-opener. And for this alone, the books are worth it. He also makes you want to learn more, by giving you a taste of things to come.

At other times, he is frustrating because he has a way of seeing that I couldn't understand. Maybe more mathematical than conceptual, but that wouldn't quite capture it. Sometimes he just presents things as straight forward that really aren't.

He's also sort of funny, in a strange way. It seemed like he was jealous of Einstein's discoveries -- like they were too easy for all the fame they gave the man. You can tell he's proud of his own intelligence.

But his comments on relativity, along with some other sources, helped me understand some key points. Like the principles that Einstein held inviolate, leading to his surprising conclusions. Or that objects travel to minimize their "proper time" in space time -- which you'd never hear in any other 1st year book. Stuff like that make these lectures great.

As others have commented, this should be a companion to a traditional text book, not a replacement.

5 out of 5 stars A graduate students point of view........2007-07-04

Physics Majors!, spend the money on these books, but not until you are 1/2 way through a calculus based physics introduction, at least at the level of H R & Walkers's "Fundamentals of Physics." I agree with many other reviewers, these are not the best books from which to initially learn the subject. But I truly wish that I had read these when I was first studying Quantum Mechanics & Electrodynamics from Griffiths' and Mechanics from Marion & Thornton.

Feynman is most helpful by putting things in perspective and speaking to the aspiring physicist in you. By reading Feynman, you can get a better sense of how to ask questions about physics. As a graduate student, I really appreciate *how* Feynman teaches, I believe reading these can make anyone a better physics lecturer. There is a lot of material, don't be afraid to pick and choose. I highly recommend the chapters on optics in Vol 1. Between reading Feynman as an undergrad and Landau as a graduate student, all of the aspiring physicists out there should be set.

5 out of 5 stars How does each electron pass through two slits at the same time? It must move discontinuously........2007-05-27

In this book, Feynman uses more than twenty pages to discuss the mysterious double-slit experiment. He regards it as "a phenomenon which is impossible, absolutely impossible, to explain in any classical way." His analysis implies that each single electron must pass through two slits at the same time. But how in hell does a single electron pass through two slits? Feynman provides no answer. In fact, it seems evident that the single electron can only pass through the two slits in a discontinuous way. Therefore, its motion must be not continuous but discontinuous. Such discontinuous motion is imaginable and comprehensible. It has actually been lucidly expounded in a recent book Quantum Motion - Unveiling the Mysterious Quantum World. A more popular introduction God Does Play Dice with the Universe can be found at my name (i.e. [..]).

Once we realize that motion is discontinuous and random in reality, we may finally understand the mysterious quantum world, where an electron can pass through two slits at the same time. Even Feynman might be satisfied with this answer.

Having undergone an Honours level Physics course, it was extraordinarily enlightening to discover Richard Feynman's view of Physics from these volumes many years later. Some 40 years after they were written, there is a huge value to the student (and past student ) still. Forget the "Surely You're Joking Mr Feynman" etc. These are the ultimate testament to Richard Feynman's understanding of physics and his ability to explain it. Unreservedly recommended to Feynman fans with a bit of Math to help understand it.

                          Book Description

Irresistibly charming or shamelessly deceitful, remarkably persuasive or uselessly verbose, everything one loves to hate--or hates to love--about "French lovers" and their self-styled reputation can be traced to eighteenth-century libertine novels. Obsessed with strategies of seduction, speculating endlessly about the motives and goals of lovers, the idle aristocrats who populate these novels are exclusively preoccupied with their erotic life. Deprived of other battlefields to fulfill their thirst for glory, libertine noblemen seek to conquer the women of their class without falling into the trap of love, while their female prey attempt to enjoy the pleasures of love without sacrificing their honor. Yet, despite the licentious mores of the declining Old Regime, men and women are still expected to pay lip service to an austere code of morals. Since they are constantly asked to denounce their own practices, their erotic war games are governed by a double constraint: whatever they feel or intend, the heroes of libertine literature can neither say what they mean nor mean what they say.

The Libertine Reader includes all the varieties of libertine strategies: from the successful cunning of Mme de T_____ in Vivant Denon's No Tomorrow to the ill-fated genius of Mme de Merteuil in Laclos's Dangerous Liaisons; from the laborious sentimental education of Meilcour in Crebillon fils's The Wayward Head and Heart to the hazardous master plan of the French ambassador in Prevost's The Story of a Modern Greek Woman. The discrepancies between the characters' words and their true intentions--the libertine double entendre--are exposed through the speaking vaginas in Diderot's The Indiscreet Jewels and the wandering soul of Amanzei in Crebillon fils's The Sofa, while the contrasts between natural and civilized--or degenerate--erotics are the subjects of both Diderot's Supplement to Bougainville's Voyage and Laclos's On the Education of Women. Finally, Sade's Florville and Courval shows that destiny itself is on the side of libertinism.

Never before has such an impressive selection of 18th century French libertine literature been assembled in English translation. The reader surveys the entire genre of this "philosophical," sometimes very erotic literature (from Denis Diderot and Crebillon fils to the divine Marquis de Sade). To my knowledge, at least two of the pieces have never been translated: Choderlos de Laclos' "On the Education of Women" and Vivant Denon's "No Tomorrow." Denon's piece is a particular treat and is perhaps the crown jewel of the collection. Of course, substantive essays by noted dix-huitiemistes are also included before each piece. For those who love the 18th century or merely are afficiandos of erotic literature, "The Libertine Reader" should definitely be on your bookshelves.
