5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to the naturally wild side of Florida.......2002-11-11

As a person who has spent a good deal of time in many of the places listed in "Exploring Wild South Florida: A Guide to Finding the Natural Areas and Wildlife of the Southern Peninsula and the Florida Keys" I can say that it is a thorough, accurate, and informative guide to the South Florida area. This book is specifically made for the person who likes to explore areas that are still predominantly in their natural condition. If you are looking for a landscaped park to hike through then you will be disappointed. If you are looking for places where you are likely to see endangered species, the only air conditioning may be a breeze, and you may see very few people (if anyone) during your hike then this is the book you are looking for.

Some places are truly remote and you may be on your own finding your way around (like the Florida Everglades) and some are less remote and may even have boardwalks through the forest to make your trip easier. The book starts with an extensive overview of everything you need to know about southern Florida - weather, what to wear, animals and plants to be cautious of, information on the various park systems, and anything else that you might have a question about when planning a trip.

One of the nicer features of the book is a section on the various habitats that you are likely to encounter in south Florida. The author does an excellent job of explaining estuaries, coral reefs, cypress stands, mangroves, marshes, hammocks and other habitats. She covers what qualifies them as a specific habitat, what you should look for and expect in each of them and general educational information on each of them.

She then covers special wildlife and unwanted pests before moving into the Federal Lands part of the book that actually starts the information on each site. When she gets to the specific sites she provides all the information that you will need to plan a trip there. She covers the local habitats you might find, wildlife, facilities, and complete contact information (worth the price of the book by itself).

A highly recommended read for those who think camping equipment should not involve the word Winnebego.

5 out of 5 stars Specialized, Specific, Useful, and Dry.......2001-06-10

My title sums the book up rather well. If you are going to South Florida with viewing nature and wildlife as one of your goals, you'll find the book extremely useful. If seeing the show at the Alligator Farm and the Seaquarium fills your need for nature, you probably won't need the book. Assuming you do use the book, you will appreciate the amount of detail it includes, though you'll probably wish for better maps and more illustrations! Despite this, highly recommended if you really want a book of this type.

4 out of 5 stars Good content needs more pictures.......2001-02-27

Overall this book is quite good, I think it is geared more toward people living in Florida than people like me who are planning a trip. I wish it had more travel info and maps. I also wish it had more pictures than it does, so you could see the places it talks about which would help out a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Usefull for planning a wildlife watching trip to S. Florida.......2000-05-19

We used this excellent book before and during our birdwatching trip to South Florida this spring. It was a useful complement to Bill Prantys 'A Birder's Guide to Florida'. In comparison to the latter book, you get more general information about the wildlife at different locationts and especially about facilities (e.g. bathrooms, food) at different wildlife refuges and parts of the Everglades National Park. In addition, there is a good introduction about different biotopes and 'special' animals and a stirring depiction of the passage of hurricane 'Andrew' over South Florida.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive guidebook for South Florida's natural areas.......1997-07-08

Wild South Florida does a pretty good job of describing the area for people planning to visit the Everglades or nearby regions. The author provides a comprehensive listing of national, state, and city parks that would interest anyone who loves the outdoors.

The author starts out by describing the different types of wild environments in South Florida and the wildlife that inhabit these places. A nice 16-page color picture section is included.

The information included for each area covers how to get to each park (the book also contains a map), how much certain places cost, and most importantly, the plant and animal life found there.

My one complaint is that, while the book covers the Florida Keys, it does not do it in as good of detail as it does mainland South Florida.

I found the book to be quite useful during my trip through the Everglades

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide.......2007-06-27

My friend and I did part of the trip last summer, and the guide was simply invaluable. We were in the major cities decribed in the book, and we took the train Irkutsk--Ulaan Baator. The book was very helpful both when we were planning the trip (has train schedules) and on the spot, directing us to places of interest. Overall, gives you a good idea what to expect. Start reading the guide at least half a year before the planned trip. You'll need good 4 to 5 months to arrange everything.

5 out of 5 stars Never showed up........2007-04-04

I bought it as part of a package deal, and it never arrived.

5 out of 5 stars Useful Along the Railroad.......2007-03-07

I used this book while traveling along the Trans-Siberian railroad and in planning my trip beforehand. It provides a great amount of quality information for planning purposes, but it is not complete. For example, when it lists the time table of trains, please note that it is only a sample of the most popular "tourist" trains. We found hundreds of trains going along the route, leaving at all times of day and night (of course we figured this out once we got there).
The translations were useful if you do not know the Russian alphabet. The pronunciation guide is good.
The best part of the guide was the section which gave you fun facts along the kilometer markings of the railroad. These made up a great portion of our entertainment while riding the train (4 days of sitting and looking out the window, chatting with other travellers, etc.). The little tidbits were very interesting!
The city guides within the book were an okay start to get familiar with the cities, but as with any guidebook which tries to cram it all in, it was not nearly complete.
My only con of the book was the large size of it. It is very thick, but I guess it must be (it has sooooo much info inside!)
I would recommend buying it if you are traveling along the railroad, or just as a great reference!

Have just finished the trip - this guide is fantastic the trip would have been a lot less without it. Every one around us borrowed it

5 out of 5 stars The best book for Trans-Siberian travelers.......2004-05-07

I have used this book multiple times while traveling the Trans-Siberian. During my first trip, it helped me to get my bearings and to plan the practicalities. On subsequent trips, I was able to enjoy the detailed maps and information about stops along the way. It is very accurate and detailed. I still found a previous version useful several years after publication. It does focus primarily on stops directly on the route. For those who with to travel further afield, I wrote the book ROAMING RUSSIA: An Adventurer's Guide to Off The Beaten Track Russia and Siberia. The Trans-Siberian Handbook is an essential book for Siberian rail travelers. I highly recommend it.

          Book Description

Epilepsy, Infantile Spasms, and Developmental Encephalopathy explores the nature and bases of infantile spasms - a major representative of the catastrophic developmental seizure disorders seen in early childhood. Although this topic has received considerable attention as a clinical disorder, the underlying pathogenesis of infantile spasms remains poorly understood. The aim is not simply to describe and label the clinical phenomenology associated with infantile spasms, but rather to work toward an understanding of the underlying mechanisms and of effective treatment strategies. The result is a volume with a high density of exciting ideas that can be taken to the bedside or to the laboratory for further study.

Approaching the subject from an interdisciplinary perspective, this book integrates clinical and basic science in its discussion of infantile spasms as representative of a common developmental brain disorder. It also provides experimentally testable hypotheses to direct further research, and presents reviews of the literature associated with suggested underlying mechanisms.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic "How-To" that deserves to be re-issued.......2000-11-27

The foreword to my hardcover version was written in 1965 in Wellington, NZ. Perhaps New Zealand was not the epicentre of the "swinging 60's" or perhaps people there just valued good, old-fashioned common sense, but this book is like a trip back to Britain of the 19th century, where the monograph was a highly respected form of writing.

This book does not attempt to get philosophical, whimsical or even overly didactic, yet it contains everything you could want to know about the basics of glass production and glassblowing for the science lab. Safety and health risks, workshop, tools, cleaning, equipment, ordering, stock control, technique, repair, design, composition and properties of the most widely-used glasses are all spelled out in a no-nonsense fashion.

This is a book that would interest the dilettante who had no intention of ever placing a piece of glass rod or tube near a flame, but who simply wanted to know more about a totally fascinating process that combines science, art and craftsmanship.

Anyone who has the responsibility for training lab technicians or Science students really should have access to this book. It's a complete classroom text and training course, but equally suitable for private study by individuals. Anyone leaning towards a more artistic use of glass and glassblowing, would also find the information here of tremendous use.

If one were compiling an encyclopaedia, this single volume would satisfy most folks as the sole entry for "glassblowing".

          Review
It's been a long time since I've sat in a classroom learning something new. I'm used to getting the latest book on a subject and doing it myself. So it's unusual that I would end up with a textbook on a technical subject that I am using for self-education. That's the situation I find myself in with this book.

Introduction To Object-Oriented Design And Analysis is designed to for use with a beginning course on the subject. So right away, you can expect the material to be presented in a formal, academic fashion. The author deliberately spends comparatively little time on introductory material and gets to the meat of the subject so that the reader can start to get some hands-on experience. Each chapter states the learning objectives up front, and ends with a recap of key terms and additional references. There are also review questions for the chapter, as well as problems to be solved. Scattered throughout the chapters are "Just In Case You Wanted To Know" sidebars that relate the subject being discussed to real-life situations. There are plenty of diagrams and illustrations to aid your understanding. There are also two case studies that are built upon throughout the book so that the reader can follow an entire project of OO analysis and design from start to finish. Finally, there is a CD included in the book that has a tool called ArgoUML that can be used to create your UML design diagrams.

I personally would recommend this book to someone wanting to learn more about OO analysis and design. If you are trying to make the transition to OO programming (such as with J2EE), you'll need to have a good grasp of this material. J2EE is not a rapid application development environment, and you need to have a solid system design in place before you start your coding. This book will give you the skills and tools you require to get there. It is a serious approach to learning, so if you prefer a lighter approach to a new subject, you should probably look for something a little different than what you'll find here.

          Conclusion

This is a book that will appeal to those who like a more academic style for their learning. If you take the time to answer the questions and follow the examples, you'll come away with an excellent understanding and grasp of the subject.
