Book Description

“How do you thank the person who gave you a vantage from which to see the world?”

This question is more than the opening statement of Father Nature: Fathers as Guides to the Natural World—it is the resounding theme that runs through each of the essays in this tribute to fathers and fathering and to nature, the connection that ties them both together.

The nineteen personal essays in Father Nature explore the fierce love between fathers and their children and the ultimate need to express this love through nature. There are stories of fathers who take their children fishing, hiking, ice skating, and berry picking, as well as stories about the significance of birds and animals, tidepools, rivers, and tree houses. Beneath each story lies an even greater lesson: Like nature, fatherhood can be difficult, terrifying, and challenging in ways that may never be fully understood.

Editors Paul Piper and Stan Tag divide Father Nature into three distinct sections. “Fathers” contains essays by sons and daughters recounting the ways their fathers shaped their lives and perceptions of nature. The essays in “Fathers and Fathering” describe the transition from being a son to becoming a father. Finally, “Fathering” explores the challenges, dilemmas, and rewards of fathering itself. A closing essay connects all three sections with a daughter's consideration of the impact of her father's death on her own life and love of nature.

Both poignant and entertaining, Father Nature is an inspiring tribute to fathers who shared one gift that can be passed down for generations—a profound love and respect for the natural world. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars varied voices of fathers, kids, and ties with nature.......2003-06-17

A moving and varied collection of essays about the importance of fathering in our contemporary culture, with a unique perspective that ties fathering to learning about life through the natural world. There are fishermen, but also robin-watchers, beach-walking, daughters' viewpoints, and a whole range of parenting experiences. The voices are varied -- sad, funny, emotional -- and all sincere. A beautiful, finely edited collection.

                        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Eleventh Book in the Making Out Series.......2002-06-24

For supposedly being a book about 19-year-old Benjamin Passmore (one of my favorite characters in the Making Out series), "Ben Takes a Chance" seldom revolves around him. Instead, it follows the various love problems brewing among the other Chatham Island teens. For starters, Zoey Passmore was found making out with Aaron Mendel in "Nina Shapes Up" (#10) while she was still dating Lucas Cabral (major déjà vu here; remember her cheating on Jake McRoyan at the beginning of this series in "Zoey Fools Around"?). Next is Aisha Gray and Christopher Shupe. He's recently proposed to Aisha and has been pressuring her to give him a yes or no answer before he ships out in January. (He's in the army.) Personally, I don't think they should marry, but we'll see.

And, although Benjamin had been debating for the past couple of books whether or not to proceed with the experimental laser surgery that may or may not restore his sight, the actual operation doesn't start until the end of this book. Major disappointment! From what I assumed from the synopsis on the back of this book, it should have occurred within the first dozen or so pages. Perhaps the result of his operation will be in the succeeding book, "Claire Can't Lose" (#12). I hope. (fingers crossed)

So, overall, this was a pretty good book (thus my 5/5 rating). However, I was a little bummed Benjamin was rarely the star of this book. I would think something as important as regaining one's sight would entail a few more pages or chapters than what was allotted. Still, "Ben Takes a Chance" is worth reading if you're into the Making Out series.

4 out of 5 stars Claire and Aaron belong together.......2002-02-20

Aaron is quite sneaky. He wanted that confrontation between himself and Lucas to take place. Lucas is so blinded by the anger that he doesn't see it. However, I am sure that Claire knows what it really going on for she plays games more than a little bit.

I am pulling for Benjamins surgery to be a success. I do not know what to say about Jake or Lara.

And, oh yeah, please be believe Aaron wants Claire every bit as much as Claire wants him. He likes Zoey cause she is naive and untouched.

                        5 out of 5 stars Ben.......2000-12-15

This whole series is great!I finish each book in about 2 1/2 hours.I can't put them down! And Ben is by FAR my favorite character! If you haven't,I definately suggest reading these books.

                            Book Description

Biologists have already identified thousands of new gene sequences, and genome sequencing efforts are speeding up the discovery process even further. With this explosion of sequence information comes the need to understand how genes work in concert in order to fulfill the cells functions. The yeast two-hybrid system--used to identify protein-protein interactions--is one of the most powerful and versatile methods for characterizing a protein's function. It has become an essential tool for both academic researchers and those in biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. This volume presents work by pioneers in the field and is the first publication devoted solely to the yeast two-hybrid system. It includes detailed protocols, practical advice on troubleshooting, and suggestions for future development. In addition, it explains how to construct an activation domain hybrid library, how to identify mutations that disrupt an interaction, and how to use the system in mammalian cells. Many of the contributors have developed new applications and variations of the technique. Chapter topics include characterizing hormone/receptor complexes, identifying peptide ligands, analyzing interactions mediated by protein modifications, and dissecting the cell cycle and other complex genetic networks. The Yeast Two-Hybrid System is the single complete resource for scientists interested in this powerful research method.

                                      Book Description

Plasmids are closed, circular pieces of DNA which are able to self replicate and are carried by many bacteria. They provide unique functions for the bacteria, e.g. by allowing them to sexually replicate and to pass on genetic material between each other. Plasmids are also responsible for the genetic factors that give resistance to antibiotics, and provide the enzymes needed to break down poorly metabolised food resources. The author has provided an up to date treatment of the structure, function and application of plasmids suitable for undergraduates and medical students. An original teaching perspective is employed in that plasmids are examined as living organisms with either a symbiotic or parasitic mode of survival. This gives a very important frame-work for understanding the structure and function of plasmids in an evolutionary context.

                                            Book Description

Linear plasmids of microbes represent a heterogenous group of extrachromosomal genetic elements initially assumed to be rare and peculiar. However, we now know that they are fairly frequently occurring plasmids in bacterial and eukaryotic species. Viral strategies to avoid shortening of the linear molecules during replication imply a common ancestry. Linear plasmids may be beneficial, neutral or detrimental for the respective host; functions include production of protein toxins, specific catabolic capabilities, antibiotic resistance, pathogenicity factors, and senescence induction.

Microbial Linear Plasmids constitutes the first attempt to comprehensively assemble current knowledge of different types of such elements, highlight recent developments in the field, and challenge the distinction between viruses and linear plasmids.

Beginners will love The Harper Handbook. My edition is just over 600 pages, chock-full of information. The handbook alphabetically references terms that relate to literature, from terms you know (metaphor) to those you might not (prosopopoeia). The explanations it gives are concise, but very helpful, often with examples. For example, if the book is discussing pastoral dramas, it gives a list of six plays, with publication dates and playwrights. In the back of the book there is a "Chronology of Literature and World Events" that puts a date on many events in the world, Britain, and the US. There's also an index of people mentioned in handbook entries.

                                                Book Description

With its wealth of information and skilful display, the book is a very useful companion for any traveller through this crowded territory. ENGLISH HISTORICAL REVIEW By the time of the Conquest, the Normans had been established in Normandy for over a hundred and fifty years. They had transformed themselves from pagan Northmen into Christian princes; their territories extended from England, southern Italy and Sicily to distant Antioch, and their influence had spread throughout western Europe and the Mediterranean. Duke William's victory at Hastings and the resulting Anglo-Norman union brought England into the mainstream of European history and culture, with far-reaching consequences for Western civilisation. These specially commissioned studies are concerned with the achievements of the cross-Channel realm. They make a major contribution to an understanding of the hundred years that witnessed great change and major developments in English and Norman government and society. There are surveys of the two constituent parts, of Normandy under the Angevin kings, of the place of kingdom and duchy in the politics and culture of the North Sea, and of the parallel Norman achievement in the Mediterranean. There are overviews both of secular administration and of the church, and a study of 'feudalism' and lordship. Within the broad field of cultural history, there are discussions of language, literature, the writing of history, and ecclesiastical architecture. Contributors LESLEY ABRAMS, MATTHEW BENNETT, MARJORIE CHIBNALL, CHRISTOPHER HARPER-BILL, ELISABETH VAN HOUTS, EMMA MASON, RICHARD PLANT, CASSANDRA POTTS, DANIEL POWER, IAN SHORT, ANN WILLIAMS. Maps, genealogies, time lines.

Publishing in Anglo-Norman studies has grown tremendously in the past thirty years, since the Norman Conquest was introduced as a special subject at the University of London, and the editors conceived this anthology as an overview of the present state of the field, with emphasis on topics in politics and culture - and not much at all on military matters, covered in detail by the essays in Strickland's Anglo-Norman Warfare (1992), to which this might be considered a companion volume. The eleven contributors, all well-known specialists, include Marjorie Chibnall on "Feudalism and Lordship" and Lesley Abrams on "England, Normandy and Scandinavia," both of which are excellent. Elisabeth van Houts's survey of historical writing is also very useful.
