        Book Description

Alexis de Tocqueville and Gustave de Beaumont's travels in America in 1831-32 have recently become the subject of renewed interest, as a C-SPAN special program has retraced the Frenchmen's journey by broadcasting each week from a different city along the route. Now the Tocqueville rediscovery continues with the publication of this unique guidebook. Comprised of fifty-five brief chapters covering each of the places Tocqueville visited, the book allows the reader to hear Tocqueville's words while following in his footsteps.

Each chapter includes a brief description of the city or town, an excerpt from what Tocqueville wrote about it, what he and Beaumont did there, and what sights can still be seen today. Also included are information on population and major industries, telephone numbers and web addresses for local historical societies and visitors' bureaus, and comparisons of the town as it is today with the way it was in Tocqueville's time. Replete with colorful anecdotes and fascinating detail and supplemented by one hundred illustrations--many of them Beaumont's original sketches--the book offers a unique blend of past and present, of practical tourist tips and thought-provoking historical insights.

The chapter on Newport, Rhode Island, for example, begins with the story of Tocqueville and Beaumont's arrival from Europe, half-starved and thirsty after a thirty-seven-day ocean voyage on which the ship's captain had badly mismanaged rations. (The inn where the apologetic captain treated them to dinner is still standing.) Among the Frenchmen's first impressions: Americans were "entirely commercial"--a conclusion based on the small town's extraordinary number of banks (five by Beaumont's count, among them the Citizens Bank, still open today). Newport, we learn, is also home to America's first synagogue, an enduring symbol of Rhode Island's unique beginning as a place of religious tolerance, and the nation's oldest library. Also explained is the origin of the pineapple as a symbol of hospitality (Newport sailors set them outside their front door to show their neighbors they had returned from the Indies and had fruit to share). The entry concludes with directions, suggestions on where to stay, and tips on tours by foot, car, or boat.

An invaluable guide to a journey of national self-discovery, In the Footsteps of Tocqueville is the perfect companion for armchair traveler and tourist alike.

From the entry on Ossining, New York:

"The Frenchmen relished the town's natural beauty. Ossining's views of the Hudson are spectacular and Beaumont captured them in his sketch book. (For a panorama of the river, go to Louis Engle Park at the foot of Sing Sing on Westerly Road.) At 7 p.m. each evening the duo went swimming in the river. Later, they socialized with the locals. (Beaumont complained that he heard a plethora of painful musical recitals by women in town.) But the people of Ossining were impressed with the two young men. The Westchester Herald described them as 'gentlemen of engaging manners, of first rate talents.' The house where they boarded still stands (34 State Street). Now a wood-working company, the house has gained additions and lost levels since 1831. It is made of Sing Sing marble, which is actually a pale limestone that was quarried by prison inmates... "

3 out of 5 stars Understand the suffering of many and come to terms with a father's death.......2006-04-07

This book is definitely a YA novel because you'll get your fair dose of angst and indecision about life as Danny tries to figure out what in the world he wants out of life. He is reminded by everyone of his noble father's death. He deals with addicts, paranoid old men, and a young single mom who doesn't want a romantic relationship with him. Throughout the story is the question, "Why did he truly drop out of his prestigous music university?"

This story is realistic in that there is no cliched clean-cut ending, but one still filled with unfinished stories and wonderings about the future.

              Book Description

In the eighteenth century, the phenomenon of animal regeneration captured the attention and imagination of the era's leading naturalists and intellectuals. Importantly, their research of the phenomenon spurred the transition from the descriptive science of natural history to modern experimental zoology. A History of Regeneration Research chronicles this crucial evolutionary period in the history of developmental biology, offering an insightful analysis of the milestones in regeneration research. The book is not only an account of leading researchers and their seminal discoveries in the field, but also brings together critical commentaries on the social context and philosphical commitments that shaded their interpretations. By strategically weaving content with context, the authors raise the discussion above the field of regeneration research; they explore the societal influences on the perception of Nature and shed light on the nature of the scientific enterprise itself and the way scientific discoveries are interpreted. Exploring new grounds, A History of Regeneration Research will be of great interest to historians of science as well as workers in developmental biology and medicine.

                  Book Description

This book is the product of a developing research focus on CMP at Berkeley. Its focus is on the important area of process models which have not kept pace with the tremendous expansion of applications of CMP. It specifically deals with the development of models with sufficient detail to allow the evaluation and tradeoff of process inputs and parameters to assess impact on quality or quantity of production. The important role of the mechanical elements of the process are included in such an "integrated model". The objective of the book is to introduce some background on the overlooked mechanical aspects of the process - including pad surface topography and abrasive particles. The "integrated model" can be particularly useful as one looks towards optimization of the process, design of consumables and, importantly, looking to minimize the environmental affects of CMP.

                      Book Description

The study of kinetic equations related to gases, semiconductors, photons, traffic flow, and other systems has developed rapidly in recent years because of its role as a mathematical tool in many applications in areas such as engineering, meteorology, biology, chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology, and pharmacy. Written by leading specialists in their respective fields, this book presents an overview of recent developments in the field of mathematical kinetic theory with a focus on modeling complex systems, emphasizing both mathematical properties and their physical meaning.

The overall presentation covers not only modeling aspects and qualitative analysis of mathematical problems, but also inverse problems, which lead to a detailed assessment of models in connection with their applications, and to computational problems, which lead to an effective link of models to the analysis of real-world systems. The book is divided into three parts: Part I presents fundamental aspects of the Boltzmann equation; Part II deals with the modeling of semiconductor devices as well as related applications and computational topics; Part III covers a variety of applications in physics and the natural sciences, offering a range of very different conceivable developments of mathematical kinetic theory.

Transport Phenomena and Kinetic Theory is an excellent self-study reference for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners working in pure and applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and engineering. The work may be used in courses or seminars on selected topics in transport phenomena or applications of the Boltzmann equation.

                          Book Description

This proceedings contains 72 technical papers presented at the Third International Conference on Discrete Element Methods, held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on September 23-25, 2002. Discrete element methods (DEM) include a suite of numerical techniques developed to model granular materials, rock, and other discontinua at the grain scale. Topics addressed include DEM formulation and implementation approaches, coupled methods, experimental validation, and techniques, including three-dimensional particle representations, efficient contact detection algorithms, particle packing schemes, and code design. Coupled methods include approaches to linking solid continuum and fluid models with DEM to simulate multiscale and multiphase phenomena. Applications include fundamental investigations of granular mechanics; micromechanical studies of powder, soil, and rock behavior; and large-scale modeling of geotechnical, material processing, mining, and petroleum engineering problems.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA DEPT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A051133. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: During the consolidation phase, reinforcement particles of Metal Matrix Composites (MMC's) tend to be non uniformly distributed. The result is that the material properties of the composite materials are not as good as those originally desired. Through large amounts of straining, homogeneity can be achieved. Finite element models of MMC's undergoing different thermomechanical processes (TMP's) to true strains of approximately 1.2 were generated. The models consist of particle clusters within the particle-depleted matrix. The particle clusters were modeled by either a smeared model in which the particles refine the grains in the cluster, or a discrete model of the particles within clusters. The smeared and discrete models qualitatively agreed with each other. The results suggest that the best TMP to reach a state of reinforcement particle homogeneity was a hot worked, low strain rate TMP.

                            Book Description

Dubbed the "God particle" by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon Lederman, the Higgs boson is a hypothetical particle which, like divinity, is all pervading but undetectable. Scientists around the world race to find this clandestine particle. This book is about a different quest to find a different particle. This too is all-pervasive and totally clandestine. By revisiting the key experiments of the past, those that have shaped physics as we know it today, and re-assessing them in the light of a new theory based on a prime particle, we confirm the existence of the elusive God Particle. It's a particle belonging to an as yet undreamed of class of matter, many orders of magnitude smaller than anything we have even imagined. The theory based on this particle ultimately leads to an overarching but simple proposition that all of the phenomena of nature can be described in terms of one particle, one force and one law.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This study investigates human error associated with 599 Naval Aviation maintenance-related mishaps (MRMs) in Fiscal Years 90-99. The Human Factors Analysis and Classification System Maintenance Extension (HFACS-ME) taxonomy was utilized to classify contributory human errors within a robust theoretical framework. Variable Poisson process models are developed to predict MRMs and relationships between the error dimensions are investigated. The results of this study show that the HFACS-ME taxonomy provides an adequate framework for the classification of MRM causal factors; that variable Poisson process models are suitable for predicting future mishaps, and that there are significant relationships between selected causal dimensions; sufficient to warrant further investigation. These results provide information regarding the predicted impact of MRMs on future operational readiness and mission capability. Through being aware of these aspects, decision-makers are armed with the knowledge to make better decisions concerning the preservation and allocation of the resources at their disposal.

                                  Book Description

This book represents for the first time The Wrongs of Woman; or Maria and Memoirs of the Author of "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" have been published in the same volume, but their history and reception have been inextricably linked since the publication of both in January 1798, less than five months after Mary Wollstonecraft's tragic early death. Designed as the fictional embodiment of Wollstonecraft's notions against patriarchy and for the rational and emotional independence of women, The Wrongs of Women tells the story of Maria, who makes a disastrous marriage and then must undergo confinement in a madhouse for her rebellion against it. Godwin's Memoirs of the Author of "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" honored Wollstonecraft's memory with a frank and detailed account of her life and death, but instead of the profound admiration he hoped to invoke, most contemporary readers felt shock at Wollstonecraft's sexual freedom and an odd mix of pity and wonder at Godwin's willingness to share such details of his wife's life with the world. The College Publishing edition includes an erudite and accessible introduction detailing the changing critical fortunes of both works, and in order to gain an appreciation for the rich cultural contexts of these texts, a selection of contemporary reviews appears in the appendix. In addition, Wollstonecraft and Godwin's other works and, uniquely, Gilbert Imlay's novel The Emigrants, are judiciously excerpted. Short essays throughout the text provide critical background material on such subjects as maternal breastfeeding, Gilbert Imlay, employment opportunities for lower-and middle-class women, marriage laws, and childbirth in the eighteenth century.

5 out of 5 stars excellent edition of this work.......2004-12-08

This is a classroom edition of two works important to people interested in early debates on women's rights, the history of intellectual ideas, and late 18th/early 19th century British fiction. Both _Wrongs of Woman_ and _Memoirs of the Author_ slightly predate most of Jane Austen's publication dates and are at the beginning of British Romantic literature. The books may be an acquired taste, more often read as class assignments than for fun, but really both are interesting for the common reader too. This edition is particularly good, highlighting a number of important issues-- including debates about breastfeeding in this period, the dangers of maternity and childbirth, and the limitations that women of the period faced. Austen doesn't tell you all of this in her novels, but Wollstonecraft's novel does, and Godwin's _Memoir_ of her tells in horrifying detail how she died from an infection probably due to using a male midwife (early obstetrician). Really, the editor's notes and details are the best that I've seen for readers who are not scholarly specialists--they are clear, helpful, and pertinent. ...And this isn't because I happen to know the editor and have an edition w/ the same series.
