It's old - in 7 seven years a lot can change
But it's, for sure, so good - all of the Routard Guides are excellent - that even being old it has lots of basic info that will not age in 7 years.
I didn't read it and as there are only a few left I hope to be able to get one before readers seduced by my inticing review might buy the few ones left.

What would you do if you had to leave your whole life behind you and move away because of war? This great book Willow Run is the story of Meggie Dillon, who has to move because her family needs money. Because Meggie's brother has gone to war. The family moves to a place called Willow Run. Here Meggie faces many obstacles when she finds out her brother is missing in action, then realizes she doesn't remember his face. Meggie also steals some icecreame from the icecream truck and then feels guilty, and wants to pay for the the icecream she had stolen, that means she has to face Arnold, the icecram man, who she and her friends think is a spy. This book is filled with friends, icecreme, letters, war, and truth. You will discover all of this and more in Willow Run.

Meggie (Margaret) Dillon is an eleven year old girl from Rockaway New York, who has to move to Willow Run Missouri, because her brother is fighting in war, so there family doesn't have as much money as they used to. Meggies dad has to work in a factory that makes B-42 Bombers for the war. Meggie is very emotional and she is very brave. Meggie has to face many obstacles in this book. Meggie is very truthful and is always writing to home and writing down her thoughts. She handles her situation very well and she acts very strong.

I definitely recommend this book and its companion, Lilly's Crossing. to kids ages nine to twelve. This book is definitely a page turner. Every time I put it down it was like I was stopping the story and the characters were just waiting for me to pick the book up again so they could continue their story. This book will also interest people who like history. It gave me a good impression of what it was like in that time during World War Two. I felt like I was in the story with Meggie. Does Eddie ever come back? Does Meggie remember his face? You find out what happens....

5 out of 5 stars A story about the power of friendship and hope.......2005-09-24

The year is 1944 when Margaret "Meggie" Dillon leaves her grandfather and her best friend Lily behind in Rockaway, New York and moves to Willow Run, Michigan, so her father can work at a factory building airplanes. Her older brother Eddie is fighting the war in Europe and Meggie misses him terribly. To make matters worse, her new house looks like a long box with few windows and no grass or trees in the yard. Her home in Rockaway had been near the sea; she used to hear the call of seagulls and breathe in the fresh, salty air. All she has to remind her of home are a few seeds from her grandfather's vegetable garden.

Slowly Meggie begins to make friends and rebuild her life. She meets Patches and Harlan, along with other kids who are in a similar situation. Their parents brought them to Willow Run so they could find better work in a factory building war planes. Meggie knows that this arrangement is not permanent because everyone keeps telling her that it is just for the duration.

Patricia Reilly Giff fills the book with vivid details that keep the reader anchored in time. Meggie is always entering wartime jingle writing contests and watching war newsreels at the movie theater.

Giff, a former reading teacher, is the author of many books for children, and several of her novels for young adults were named ALA Notable Books and ALA Best Books, including THE GIFT OF THE PIRATE KING, ALL THE WAY HOME, and NORY RYAN'S SONG.

Meggie Dillon lived during uncertain times, just like many young people today. Readers will learn about the power of friendship and hope to pull us through difficult times when they pick up a copy of WILLOW RUN.

              Book Description

Changing Classes tells the story of Willow Run, a small, poor, ethnically-mixed town in Michigan's rust belt, a community in turmoil over the announced closing of a nearby auto assembly plant. As teachers and administrators began to find ways to make schooling more relevant to working-class children, two large-scale school reform initiatives swept into town: the Governor's "market-place" reforms and the National Science Foundation's "state systemic initiative." Against the backdrop of a post-fordist economy, the author shows complex linkages at work as society structures the development of children to adulthood.

                                        Book Description

The general context of this book is applied to systems in n-dimensional space. Emphasis is placed on a general approach to control theory, independent of optimization, and demonstrates a novel approach by converting a given dynamical system into a control system, in order to obtain a deeper understanding of its mode of action. The contents of the monograph include: a presentation of the basic concepts and results of control theory, the typical and classical behaviour of control systems, techniques for transforming dynamic systems into control systems, and the systematic approach to study control systems in applications, as shown in many examples.

                                        Book Description

The Disenchantments of Love, published in Spain in 1647 by Maria de Zayas, is a stunning collection of stories about women's amorous experiences in a patriarchal and imperialistic society during the turbulent seventeenth century. Now available for the first time in English translation, the ten exemplary novellas are set within an encompassing frame story that continues from the first collection, The Enchantments of Love: Amorous and Exemplary Novels, published in 1637. Both collections of love stories were immediately popular because of the novelty of their plots and the gender of their author.

What is new in the disenchantments is the deliberately feminist purpose stated in the rules for telling stories: only women are to narrate "true cases intended to disenchant women about men's deceptions," pointedly denying men the opportunity to dominate the storytelling. In the frame, however, the subtly ironic commentaries on the stories highlight the differences between masculine and feminine points of view. The conclusion of the frame reiterates the exemplary message that women are safe from men's physical and psychological abuse only in the sisterhood of the convent.

These ten sensational and bizarre tales focus on the ways lovers deceive women in order to "get their way," through magic, cross dressing as women, and rape--to the torture and murder of innocent women at the hands of their protectors--their fathers, brothers, and husbands. The graphic depictions of women's mutilated bodies are unprecedented in Western literature, as is the meticulous description of domestic violence that has traditionally remained private and hidden. A fascinating dimension of these fast-paced narratives is what they suggest through omission, silence, and ambiguous detail: the untold story that fires the reader's imagination.

During the 17th Century, Spanish authors were mostly men. The women who wrote during the period usually were confined to the traditional writings of the era. Although Maria de Zayas y Sotomayor escapes from the norm of her time and really exposes the hardships women dealt with. Her stories will make you laugh, cry, and love. They are so beautiful. I have to thank my Spanish Literature professor for suggesting I read it.

This book is not only enlights one of Spain, but of women in general. I highly recommend this novel.

This book was one of the most amazing books I have ever read. The trials the women go through in this book because of the love they had for their men are nothing short of extraordinary. I would recommend this book to anyone who is ready to understand that women had to go through more than cleaning house. After reading this book you will never think about men or women during this time period the same.

One must keep in mind the time period of the book, which was the Great Depression. One must also remember that any kind of pervasive, endemic change on the scale of industrialism is bound to provoke a reaction. The stellar aspect of this book is the exhibition of a high order, intellectual critique of Modernism of a kind not usually originating from the South. Another stellar aspect of this book is the multitude of angles the attack is delivered from (historical, philosophical, religious, artistic). The one thing they all have in common is an astounding degree of rhetorical sophistication - these agrarians knew their adversary and were relentless in scourging it. For this, we owe them great thanks. That having been said, I doubt the Southern Agrarians could have ever conceived of man terraforming Mars, mining one of Jupiter's moons, or any of the things that we take for granted as inevitability. I never wish to be thought a better conservative than Edmund Burke, and he once remarked that when history has spoken, an opposing virtue may become not only immoral but perverse. It would seem that the record of history is against the agrarians. If man is to have the room and the land and the freedom they sought, it will have to be on the other side of the industrial Modernism they so hated and feared. Perhaps upon a green Mars, newly primed and ready for settlement?....

I would not go so far as to say any of these gentlemen is absolutely correct in their work, but this collection is extremely important if you want some understanding of the southern mind at the begining of the Great Depression. This is very much a regional book and will have little interest to anyone who isn't searching for some meaning from the South. It is great reading however. Although the essays in the book are not connected, the general theme is one of a general distrust of the modern industrial world where people have no connection to place and stable values and ideals. There is a definate feeling of longing for the agrarian South of old that was slowly slipping away at the time. Very interesting.

5 out of 5 stars The Agrarian South Vs. The Industrial North.......2004-02-23

These southern writers of I'll Take My Stand, sounded like farmers, but were mostly professors who originated from the south. Many of them lived and taught outside the south, but still had Dixie on their minds. All of them were connected in some way with Vanderbilt University. These are southern gentleman writers with flowing prose and show that the south is not completely anti-intellectual, though one writer says that southerners were not into learning just for learnings's sake, like in the north. I will say anti-intellectualism does shield people from bad ideas and keeps them to the tried and true old ways.

In general, the argument is that the agrarian culture of the south was superior to the industrial culture of the north. Farmers were self-sufficient and were able to remain independent from the government and the money economy by growing their own food, making their own clothes, and building their own shelters. The ideal farming which preserves the southern culture is pre-dominately subsistence farming and does not depend on money crops and the boom and bust economy. The King Cotton cash crop was criticized because once it was over-produced and prices for it fell, farmers fell into never ending debt. One writer mentions that farmers should not be into farming to get rich, but to preserve an agrarian lifestyle.

It is also mentioned that farm work was not as mechanical as the factory work of the North. It was claimed that the South had more time for leisure to support a richer cultural life than the North. The North is accused of money-grubbing, emphasizing economic concerns over quality of life concerns. One writer regrets that the South did not become a hot spot for higher learning, like the North East had become. If only the South hadn't been invaded by Yankees, their culture would have developed more and became permanent!

There are some complaints about cars and how the roads are detrimental to farming life and the agrarian culture of the South. In general, the authors were concerned with preserving this culture and were worried that since they lost the Civil War, they would eventually lose their culture to the industrial culture of the north. It is a good book to find out about what life was like for southerners after the war--what pressures and problems of survival they had and the poverty they faced.

There is some discussion of the civil war. One author saw the war as war between two cultures that were diametrically opposed to one another. The north needed the south to live off of and so it could not let her go. It is also interesting to note that the south did not like tariffs because they were detrimental to farmers, but the north did.

The problem of slavery is presented as something that was forced on America by England, since England was making a fortune off the slave trade. The south was not blamed for having the pre-dominate share of slaves until about 1830 when a fanatical abolitionist by the name of William Lloyd Garrison started circulating "stories" about "evil" slave owners who mistreated their slaves terribly.

The agrarian south and its culture is a ghost of its former self, but some of these issues live own with writers like Wendell Berry who advocate going back to the farm and becoming more self-sufficient, while being less southern and more racially egalitarian. Luddites will like this book. The book shows convincely that if technology changes, it changes the culture and many people won't like those changes. The writers often seem justifiably bitter about the way things turned out for the south, with their nation and culture being conquered and all. And what can I say? The book is bedrock conservative, sometimes stultifyingly so, you'll have blow the dust off this one!

                                        5 out of 5 stars Southern Schizophrenia.......2003-01-06

As an expatriate Southerner, I admit that much of this work makes me a bit dewey-eyed, especially "Cousin Lucius." That said, the whole idea of the book is a foolishly romantic view of a mythical Southern Past. Every reasonably literate Southerner is familiar with Faulkner's line that "the past isn't dead, it isn't even past." I reject that. Southerners do not live with their past, they live with, one might say in, a mythically remembered past. The antebellum South was much more like Olmstead's critical descriptions than the happy place described by the slave-holding oligarchs. 300,000 mostly poor men died in the rich men's attempt to preserve their pretenses. In the aftermath, both the white and black poor of the South were sentenced to peonage for a century while the scions of the pre-war big men feasted on Yankee table scraps. That is the truth. The Agrarians describe a society they wanted to see because Southerners just couldn't bring themselves to see the ruin of poverty, ignorance, and xenophobia that surrounded them. Atlanta may indeed represent what a quarter million Confederate soldiers died to prevent. But there really wasn't an Atlanta as romantic Southerners want to remember it.

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary collection of essays........2002-06-28

In spite of the title (it comes from the chorus of "Dixie"), this book is not about the War, or a celebration of the Old South. It is rather a collection of essays in support of the Southern Agrarian movement centered at Vanderbilt University in the 1920s and 30s. The unique thing about this book is the uniformly high literary quality of the essays. Take a look at the table of contents. One would be hard-pressed to find another collection of essays by such an ensemble of writers, poets, and historians. Anyone interested in who we are and how we got here as Americans should read this book.

The views expressed in this book may not ultimately make sense when considered from the point of view of an economist. Nonetheless, after reading it, you'll wonder whether there might not have been an alternative to either the brutal, dehumanizing calculations of the socialists in their various guises, or the materialistic worship of progress and the almighty dollar that capitalism brings us. It is a book with an old-fashioned humanism and dignity that is seldom encountered anymore. The modern reader may be startled, for example, to be presented with the idea that education is something more than the vocational training it is today, but rather a course of personal development in which the pupil comes to understand his place and role in society, in which the pupil becomes cultured, if you will. Nowadays, "culture" means that we play Mozart to our children in utero, so that when ill-mannered little Brandon grows up, he'll be one leg up on the competition for that lucrative securities analyst job on Wall Street.

I can well remember reading "The Life and Death of Cousin Lucius", from this book, in school growing up. Many of the essays stick with you, and stand up to multiple re-readings.

Even if you don't agree with a call for a return to a rural, agrarian society (and I don't, but even that fact makes me sad after I read this book), it's well worth reading.

                                                          Book Description

This study of the US Army Ranger takes the reader through the distinct stages of training and acceptance, including the Ranger Indoctrination Program and Ranger Battalion training, and details the developments in Ranger weaponry, equipment and clothing since the early 1980s. Using first hand accounts, it shows what it was like to fight in Panama in 1989, in raid missions in Iraq in 1991 and Somalia in 1993, and brings the unit up to date with the 3rd Battalion's deployment to Afghanistan in Operation Enduring Freedom. It also covers the culture of the Rangers, from their special language and terminology, to the rites of passage that lie behind the formal training program.

My wife purchased a stack of 14 Osprey books as my anniversary gift (one per year). All the books deal with the modern military and most have some references to the ongoing war in Afghanistan since I deployed there in 2004. Of the books, three were by Mir Bahmanyar and each was unworthy of Osprey's otherwise fine standards.

This book didn't not provide an objective look at Rangers, but rather a 'rah rah' account of their lives and missions. Some of the pictures were evidently personal photos and poorly chosen. I understand the desire to infuse personal photos to capture the Rangers' daily lives, but they showed these fine young men as clowns. The web is awash with great photos of Rangers in training and in action, but they chose to use pictures of hazing and guys in a bar? Granted, it's a part of the troops' lifestyle and fits under that chapter title, but the web and Army is awash with much better, more professional pictures of Rangers in training and in action.

Slanted, unprofessional, and hard to read. Pass on this one.

As one who does not know much about the Rangers, I read this book to learn. I found it to be informative, and the pictures are great; but it seems to not have as much information as it could. What I mean is, for example, as far as the specifics of, let's say, training, it does not give much. There are times where the detail is great, and it definately pays homage to the Rangers and allows the reader to understand the mindset and culture; however, I just felt that it was not as informative as it could have been. Regardless, for someone who is looking for information, or at least a starting point of information, this book is a worthy addition to anyone's library.

A concise, effective book that provides all the basics for building a good oral argument. The advice is practical and presented in a succinct little book that can be read in one sitting. Although it lacks material on the academic aspects of oral argument, it is full of practical advice and great ideas for presenting effectively. Well worth the time and money!

In order to prepare for oral argument in an important federal appeal, I ordered numerous books on oral advocacy. This book may be "little," but it was actually the best of the five books that I read. (Second best was "Winning on Appeal" by Judge Ruggero J. Aldisert). It was somewhat surprising that this book was best, because it was the smallest of the lot and, to some degree, is geared toward law students participating in moot court competitions, rather than to practicing lawyers. But this book had the most practical suggestions and I skipped over the parts applicable to moot court competitions (coordinating argument with a partner, etc.) I also liked the fact that this book had practical suggestions about dealing with "stage fright." Some of the other books I read suggested that if you don't feel totally comfortable with public speaking, perhaps you should find someone else to argue your appeal (gee, thanks). This is the book that I read over again the night before oral argument, and its upbeat tone and concrete suggestions really calmed my nerves. I highly recommend this book to any lawyer preparing for oral argument or for any law student participating in moot court.

"Helen Caldicott has been my inspiration to speak out."—Meryl Streep

Our planet is desperately ill and must be healed. If the human race does not change its present behavior, the ecosphere may be doomed within the next ten years. A renowned anti-nuclear activist for twenty years, Helen Caldicott here turns from the arms race to the race to save the planet, laying out the grim details of ozone depletion, excess energy consumption, pollution, and global warming. The causes: public apathy, corporate greed, and the cynical manipulation of political leaders.

To save the planet we need to change the way we think and behave. Closer contact with, and appropriate reverence for, nature will help to provide simple answers to seemingly complex problems.

If You Love This Planet describes in easy-to-understand language the scientific and medical consequences of the greenhouse effect, ozone depletion, deforestation, species extinction, toxic chemical pollution, nuclear waste, food contamination, and the ever-present threat of nuclear war.

Caldicott, a physician by training, also gives us a prescription for cure—and a cause for hope. We must learn energy efficiency, we must organize politically (voting, she suggests, should be compulsory), and we must hold corporations and governments accountable for their actions. Above all, she says, our fight for the planet will draw its greatest strength from a love for the Earth itself.

All thinking persons now recognize that the deepening crisis of climate change requires urgent action to transform the global economy to a condition whereby most energy is supplied without carbon. All serious energy analysts, including the International Agency Agency (in the public sector) and the World Energy Council (in the private sector) recognize that this clean-energy revolution cannot conceivably be accomplished without nuclear power as a leading and expanding source of such clean energy. All around the world, governments representing some 80% of humankind are comprehending and acting on this reality. Indeed, Ms. Caldicott's own country, Australia, which for decades has been content to burn coal for its electricity, is now moving rapidly to embrace the use of nuclear power. Unfortunately, Ms. Caldicott, long known for her hysterical and myth-ridden anti-nuclear tirades, cannot possibly grasp this truth. Thus, she couples her well-founded concerns about the planet's future to unrealistic prescriptions, which if followed, would propel us into the very catastrophe she fears. This doctor may have diagnosed the disease, but no one should listen to her foolish nostrums concerning the cure. This must be said without qualification: When it comes to climate change, Dr. Caldicott is a quack.

It'll change the way you look at the world. It'll even make you a bit scared and depressed. Why's this a good thing? People who are scared are people who will fight for change. Everybody should read this book. If everybody read this book, the world would SERIOUSLY be a better place.

You might assume from the title that this book is devoted to environmental issues and solutions. You'd be partially right, but this book is much more. Caldicott also goes into the birth and development of the American corporate machine and of the equally significant public relations industry. Instead of just explaining what's wrong with the planet and what you can do about it, she educates us about how we got where we are, and how our culture of conspicuous consumption came to be.

This book is a real eye opener and will cause you to question some of your most basic ideas about American society.
