Book Description
Advances in technology have enabled the collection of data from scientific observations, simulations, and experiments at an ever-increasing pace. For the scientist and engineer to benefit from these enhanced data collecting capabilities, it is becoming clear that semi-automated data analysis techniques must be applied to find the useful information in the data. Computational scientific discovery methods can be used to this end: they focus on applying computational methods to automate scientific activities, such as finding laws from observational data. In contrast to mining scientific data, which focuses on building highly predictive models, computational scientific discovery puts a strong emphasis on discovering knowledge represented in formalisms used by scientists and engineers, such as numeric equations and reaction pathways.
This state-of-the-art survey provides an introduction to computational approaches to the discovery of scientific knowledge and gives an overview of recent advances in this area, including techniques and applications in environmental and life sciences. The 15 articles presented are partly inspired by the contributions of the International Symposium on Computational Discovery of Communicable Knowledge, held in Stanford, CA, USA in March 2001. More representative coverage of recent research in computational scientific discovery is achieved by a significant number of additional invited contributions.

Best On The Ground Guide.......2007-04-03
All of Shawn Hall's books are excellent. We have used them for several years to plan trips and then go find the locations he mentions. He gives the reader not only the history of the site, but what remains today of the ghost towns, old stage stops, and railroad towns.
A great resource for historians and explorers.......2007-01-30
Shawn Hall obviously has a love of history and it's preservation. "Old Heart of Nevada: Ghost Towns and Mining Camps of Elko County" is obviously the result of 1000's of hours of research and countless miles of off-road exploration. Hall's account of these now vanished towns is both factual and facinating as he provides the history, stories, and current state of dozens of now defunct towns, mines, and ranch sites of the area.
The text alone is worth the price for the facts and stories, but even better are the historical photos which can often be contrasted with the author's own photo's of the same area.
A must-have for any Nevada historian or explorer.

Some say that the reason teens are so addicted to horror stories is because disgusting monsters, ghouls, and tentacled amphibians psychologically and creatively personify a teen's innermost angst. Proving that there is more than a grain of truth to the theory, crowned king of teenage angst Paul Zindel plunges into the world of horror with style in Reef of Death, his third fast-paced, thrilling tale of smart teens battling the slime of the earth. Even the most reluctant readers will find themselves furiously turning pages to find out what happens to P.C. McPhee when he hops a plane to Australia to help his crazy uncle solve an offshore mystery. A tidal wave of adventure and a cast of villains--including the biggest, nastiest, man-eating fish on earth--await him Down Under. Teens who love being scared out of their wits won't want to miss Zindel's other two horrifying tales: Loch and The Doom Stone, both chosen as Recommended Books for Reluctant Young Adult Readers by the American Library Association.
Book Description
Seventeen-year-old PC can't resist his uncle Cliff's frantic call and is soon aboard a plane to Australia. Within hours of arriving, PC realizes that his uncle has gotten himself into an even more bizarre predicament than usual, and that Cliff is counting on him to unravel the threads of a mystery linking: a missing scuba diver, presumed dead; Maruul, a beautiful Aboriginal girl suffering from amnesia; a strange map based on a legend of a sacred treasure; an erie, seemly deserted ship; and a huge, horrible creature that lurks in the depths beneath the reef.
Trying to help the shaken young girl, PC and Cliff return to the reef where Maruul's brother vanished and take up the search for the Aboriginal treasure that will save the people of Maruul's tribe. But someone else is looking for the treasure too -- and when the two groups collide, a lethal game of hide-and-seek is played out beneath the deep and bloody water of the reef.

Reef of Death.......2007-04-10
The Book starts out in Austrilaia in present time .I thought this book was not the best I ever read but one of the best books. I would recommend this book because it has alot of action and mystery. Right in the very beginning of the book there is an attack on a scuba diver and they keep happening through the book. The characters of the book are PC (Peter Collins McPhee) Cliff , Helen (the grandmother), and Maruul. PC , Maruul, and Cliff wanted to stop the fish creature from killing more people so they set out but will they be able to stop this thing before it kills them too?, find out more of the details by reading this book.
reef of death.......2005-11-10
This book is one of the best books i have ever read. I liked this book because it is from paul zindel and also because it has non fiction charachters in it!
Another good book by Zindel.......2004-06-23
This book was exceptional and very difficult to put down. There is constant surprises and you never know what is going to happen next. Defiantly worth reading.
SEA MONSTERS ON THE LOOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-09-03
Paul Zindel's next book has giant sea monsters and stuff like that in this exciting book. PC's uncle Cliff invites him on a treasure hunt in Australia in The Great Barrier Reef. A girl named Maruul is also joining the hunt. Unfortunately, the treasure is guarded by a giant man eating fish {like always}. Pc, Cliff, and Maruul become invloved in a game of cat-and-mouse where winner takes all. The torture chamber scenes were also cool but the conclusion was the best. With the underawter submarine chase and the ginat robot. This is one of Zindel's best books.
review for reef of death.......2003-07-17
I recommend this book to anyone who likes horror and action. An example of horror is when the sea creature has killed Arnhen and is now ripping him to shreds. "It snapped at them as the girl saw Arnhem's torso float up to the surface, saw the white flash of spine and the circle of shredded, raw flesh." An example of action would be when Dr.Ecenbarger put a guard in the torture chair. A crab was put in a cage and then the cage was put on the guard's head. "The guard was dead only moments before the crab began the feast on his brain." In conclusion, I think anyone who likes horror stories and action, should read this book.

Still able to impart valuable lessons about conservation........2005-01-14
This book was first published in the English language in 1971 as the second in a series of several books - each with it's own specific topic. Some of the photographs may look a little jaded - by today's standards, but because this book would have attracted a 5 star rating in 1971 I believe it should still attract that same rating today.
"Life & Death in a Coral Sea" may be something of an over-dramatic title for some. After all, this is not a book about Sharks or tragedy - but about conservation, pollution and, above all, the protection of our world's underwater environment.
Packed with page after page covering all aspects of the book's main theme, I found the book all the more interesting because of the long passage of time since I read it last. My over-riding conclusion is that the content is as relevant today as it ever was. So much so, I would suggest no scuba diver's bookshelf is complete without a copy - but be quick, they will not remain available forever.
As with all the books in this series, it is also a good read.

Book Description
Coral reefs have shaped the surface of our planet far more than has any other ecosystem. They are dynamic systems, producing limestone at the rate of 400-2,000 tons per hectare per year, and influencing the chemical balance of the world's oceans. Coral reefs have been around since before the prairies or other ecosystems of flowering plants existed, yet they vanish about a million years before other groups of organisms each time there is a global mass extinction. They return after each catastrophe, however, following a long period of absence. Although coral reefs are the most productive communities in the sea, the fisheries of coral reefs are among the most vulnerable to overexploitation. Despite having the power to create the most massive structures in the world made by living creatures (including man), the thin veneer of living tissue of coral reef is particularly sensitive to natural disturbances and effects of human activities. Coral reefs are the first to go during periods of climate change, but they have always come back. This combination of attributes, creative power and fragility, resilience and sensitivity, makes management of coral-reef systems a challenge to science. Over 70% of the coral reefs in the Caribbean and Asian waters have been degraded, and perhaps a third of the 400 species of corals in Japanese waters are in danger of local extinction unless effective coastal management practices are established. This book presents what is known about factors that shift the balance between accretion and erosion, recruitment and mortality, stony corals and filamentous algae, recovery and degradation--the life and death of coral reefs. Insight into the factors controlling the direction of these processes is essential for appropriate management decisions.

Book Description
The book brings the up-to-date information about some aspects of regulation of flowering, especially about the role of gibberellins; about agricultural aspects of cytokinin functioning, namely their role in yield formation in cereals; about some signalling systems involved in cytokinin, auxin and ethylene signalling. It contains a review on auxin transport and on transgenic plants with modified levels of auxins and several papers concerning hormones and stress or hormones and cellular structures. As the workshop was held in Moscow, the book represents also a good source of information about research in Russia in the field of phytohormones.

Book Description
Pierre-Francois Verhulst, with his seminal work using the logistic map to describe population growth and saturation, paved the way for the many applications of this tool in modern mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, economics and sociology. Indeed nowadays the logistic map is considered a useful and paradigmatic showcase for the route leading to chaos. This volume gathers contributions from some of the leading specialists in the field to present a state-of-the art view of the many ramifications of the developments initiated by Verhulst over a century ago.

Book Description
In Myths of Modern Individualism, the renowned critic Ian Watt treats Don Juan, Don Quixote, Faust, and Robinson Crusoe as "individualists," pursuing their own views of what they should be. The original Counter Reformation myths saw the individualism of Don Juan, Don Quixote, and Faust as a problem to be quelled by death or mockery. However, the Romantic period, a time more favorably disposed toward myth, saw their dissension not as unacceptable disorder, but rather as admirable and heroic behavior. This incisive study traces attitudes toward these figures and the Romantic product Robinson Crusoe from disapproval to awe to skepticism, examining them as icons of such problems as solitude, narcissism, and the claims of the self versus the claims of the community. Pointedly, none of these figures marries or has a lasting relationship, save for the selfless devotion of a single male servant. Watt argues that the myths of Don Juan, Don Quixote, Faust, and Robinson Crusoe remain the distinctive products of Western society, embodying the most basic values of modern culture.
Customer Reviews:
A Quick Read.......2000-04-10
Watt examines four famous characters from Western literature who have been reincarnated numerous times: Faust, Don Quixote, Don Juan, and Robinson Crusoe. He treats each individually in the first half of the book, and makes comparisions and discusses recent reworkings in the second half. The depth and breadth of Watt's knowledge of his four myths is readily apparent. Still, though, it's an easy read, intended perhaps for the non-expert. Even if you haven't read the original works yourself, it's easy to follow. The book hints at provocative issues in the creation and meaning of myth as well as "individualism," though Watt's theoretical musings aren't as rewarding or complete as his close analysis of the four figures. The work of history and translation on the transformation of myth is a fascinating subject, but Watt's book suggests far more questions than it answers.
