Book Description
Glacier National Park presents one of the most prime forces that formed this planet--glaciation. Enjoy the flowered meadows and the green terraced slopes. But, it is the dramatic carving of rock that we see here as a great force of nature.
Glacier National Park, located in northwestern Montana on the Canadian border, was established in 1910. Canada and the United States expanded the National Park concept in 1932, when they formed Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.

Customer Reviews:
Keep the map, leave the book at home.......2003-07-17
You'll need at least one or two other guides if you're going to Costa Rica for the first time. This book directs you to spend most of your time at the major resorts. That's great for anyone with unlimited funds but the rest of us have to be a little more realistic. One the up side, the map was great.
not much info.......2001-09-02
This guide book was cheaper than the lonely planet book and contained a map, which was nice. However, the book itself is not that great. There isn't much information and lots of the smaller places to see aren't mentioned, or if they are it is just a very little bit. The major stuff to see is here, and the restaurant descriptions are good. But if your wanting to do something off the beaten path this book will not provide you with the information you need. Sometimes having more than one guide book can be helpful, this would make a good secondary guide book. It isn't all bad, but you'd be better off with the lonely planet book. The map was a nice feature and it did come in handy several times.
Smooth trip to Costa Rica thanks to Frommer's.......2001-03-11
My entire family (ages 29-60) just returned from an 8-day vacation to Costa Rica planned on recommendations made by this book. I'm glad to say that every hotel and every restaurant met our expectations. This is a must read for those planning trips to Costa Rica!
This Book Was Excellent!.......2000-03-22
We went to Costa Rica to get married in front of the Arenal Volcano and I have to say it was the best vacation of our lives. We lucked out and the volcano erupted just before we said our vows. IT was also one of the clearest days of the year. This book helped us immensely. The map was invaluable. The descriptions of each place were dead on. The writer clearly knows every town intimately and we couldn't believe the amount of detail. We're going back next Christmas and we'll be taking this book along!
Frommer's 99 Costa Rica.......2000-03-17
This book does not really cover the less expensive places to stay and eat. For those of us who like to "rough it" a bit the book is really not that helpful. The Lonely Planet Costa Rica book has served us better.

Book Description
This is the first detailed treatment of the long-standing, previously unresolved controversy surrounding the nature of senescence in clonal cultures. Part historical review of the literature, part detective story,Sex and Death in Protozoa presents a comprehensive but entertaining discussion of the sometimes contradictory evidence for protozoan senescence and the rejuvenating effects of sex in these organisms. Drawing on Hermann Muller's "ratchet model," Dr. Bell demonstrates in a quantitative fashion how genetic recombination (an intrinsic part of the sexual process) can eliminate the deleterious effects of accumulated mutations in clonal cultures and provide the rejuvenating effects associated with mating. This well written account by one of the leading authorities in the field is indispensable reading for those interested in the genetics and cell biology of protozoa, and more generally, those researchers and students interested in the phenomenon of senescence.

Book Description
In a sail-powered canoe, on foot with a pack-donkey, playing house in a derelict silver mine, Stevenson celebrates the romance of life as a voluntary inland castaway. From canalside Belgium and darkest rural France to the wild west, he gazeteers history, landscape and inhabitants with equal enthusiasm, despite being taken from a madman; in his youthful relish and supreme disregard for discomfort, this precursor of Kerouac and Chatwin joys in his life on the open road.

What to do when you answer the door and the wolf is there........2007-01-08
I want to keep my review short because, if you have not read this book, reading my review will take up some of the time in which you could be reading the real book. When "Moving Violations" was first published, I heard a review of it on NPR. John Hockenberry is an NPR alum so I expected the book to be almost as good as the review led me to believe. I ordered it from Amazon and devoured it in almost no time. It was actually better than the radio review had led me to expect. A month later, I got a call from Seattle that delivered horrific news. My 21-year-old son had been in a contest with gravity and gravity had won. Although he had just had 18 hours of surgery, there was no way to know if he would ever walk again. Through the years since that time, I have read "Moving Violations" many times. It initially gave me entrance to a new world and was much more helpful to both my son and I than all the rehab publications combined. I knew, from the moment I answered that phone call that both my son and I had crossed into the Twilight Zone and nothing would ever be the same again. The Twilight Zone, however, had at least one map. My son's journey was, and continues to be, unique (as all such journeys are). I did feel, from the very beginning, that we had a preview of some of the directional signposts and even some of the scenic overlooks. I cannot help but think that our family has been living and learning about this new life in a richer way than would never have been possible if we had not read this book. As soon as my son came home from rehab it became clear that he had lost his will to live. I had a captive audience and started reading "M V" aloud. It is well written and mirrors many of the dilemmas in the life of a young male with spinal cord damage. I think it only took two days for my son to get interested enough that he started reading it himself. This book was truly one of the first things that helped him recover his will to live. Living with a catastrophic spinal cord injury is not even at the bottom of the list of interesting travel sites, and while I cannot believe that anyone would take that path voluntarily, "M V" is proof that, along with the horror, there can be adventure and possibilities in life; possibilities that could be so easily missed. So...READ IT! While spinal cord injury may never be a part of your personal life, sooner or later something awful could be. As the Eagles remind us, "The wolf is always at the door." In whatever guise the wolf presents itself, you will have learned something useful about what to do when or if the wolf appears.
The book changed my life........2005-10-12
From buying it (i think) 2 days early and reading over a very nice summer weekend in june 1995, i knew this book was - just- different. Amazing use of the language, probably the best crip biography to date (and it's well over a decade now. Based my Honors Thesis in College on what Hockenberry wrote in this book, traveled miles and miles to see his off broadway play, speaking dates across the country, and even got to know myself - and him, better as well, he ain't on nbc anymore, but this still stands as probably one of the must reads in disability studies or crip liberation.
Unforgettable Stories That Continue To Resonate With Me.......2005-02-24
Read this book almost ten years ago. Still can't stop thinking about it. Did all this really happen? Is it happening still? Funny, sad, courageous, all of that, and more than that. Poetic, quixotic... almost other-worldly. Spun from the mind of a visionary, a comic, a journalist, with voice as warm as maple-syrup, familiar and self-deprecating, surely in this account we know what it's like to be Hockenberry, as certainly as he lets us know what it's like to be anyone else he writes about, talks about, covers with an excellence and professionalism rarely matched in journalism, and the chip on his shoulder which still gets him the job he wants, the location he wants, and then run out of town on a rail, that is, after they run him into town on a rail. The 1990 ADA cuts both ways, this book will stay with you, long after the prosaic rocks skips and eddies endlessly on a modern day Walden Pond, that is one man's life... on wheelies.
If you read only one book this year, make it this one, and
be sure to laugh with the author, in all the right places.
Coming to Terms with Disability.......2004-10-23
This book contains the memoirs of John Hockenberry, a well-known journalist who is disabled. Hockenberry takes us through a blow-by-blow account of the accident which left him paralyzed from the chest down. He explains the nature and extent of his injuries and describes his experiences in the rehab hospital where he learned how to manage the needs of daily life from his wheelchair. He then takes us through the details of his young adult years, his education, marriage, and career. The only aspect of the book that I did not like was that Hockenberry occasionally gets a little heavy-handed with philosophizing. The extensive self-analysis, however is understandable, since this is very much a book about coming to terms with his life-to-date and his culture.
It was the 1980 eruptions at Mt. St. Helens that got Hockenberry his big break with NPR. Hockenberry was covering the reports for a local radio station in Eugene, Oregon, where he was living at the time, and his reports drew the attention of the national NPR news editors. They never suspected that their intrepid Oregonian journalist was in a wheelchair until the day he was not able to phone in a report before the deadline because he couldn't locate an accessible phone. NPR found that Hockenberry was quite talented at finding, writing, and reading news stories, and brought him to their headquarters in D.C. Later, Hockenberry was chosen to be the Middle East correspondent for NPR, stationed in Jerusalem. It was there, far from home and the Americans with Disabilities Act legislation, where Hockenberry faced tremendous challenges that taught him much about the human family.
Although I had listened to countless news reports from Hockenberry on NPR, I never knew about his disability until I heard him giving an interview on NPR about this book. The thought of someone who is paralyzed from the chest down voluntarily navigating through a war zone, managing to transport himself through terrain where wheels can't go, is simply mind-boggling. Hockenberry doesn't tell these stories to boast about his strengths- -instead, his goal is to explain how he is an ordinary person with his own foibles and problems. But his problems aren't insurmountable, thanks to his creativity and determination, and to the willingness of others to meet him partway at times with compassion or a shift in habits or expectations. He's not asking to pull less weight than others because of his disability, but only to be allowed to pull the weight in the ways that he is able, without barriers placed in his way.
Working in Jerusalem gave Hockenberry a unique vantage point for observing the US and its relation to handicapped people. He writes "It is very American to make these ironclad distinctions between the individual merit of a person and opportunities for advancement that have to do with family connections, wealth, wheelchairs, race, and other intangibles...In America the primary virtue is in doing something `despite the wheelchair,' or `even though you are black or a woman.' Succeed by incorporating what makes you different into your goal and you are perceived as having cheated." Later he notes "In America access is always about architecture and never about human beings. Among Israelis and Palestinians, access was rarely about anything but people. While in the U.S. a wheelchair stands out as an explicitly separate experience from the mainstream, in the Israel and Arab worlds it is just another thing that can go wrong in a place where things go wrong all the time." Hockenberry notes how far people in Jerusalem were willing to go out of their way to help him when the terrain was inaccessible, and contrasts that with his experience trying to use the New York subway, where most people refused to even look at him, let alone offer to assist him in stations without elevators.
Having lived in the Middle East myself for five years, I think Hockenberry was probably right about Israelis and Palestinians more readily acknowledging the humanity of situations involving access for wheelchairs. But I'm not sure that non-disabled Americans are intentionally uncompassionate. As Americans, we are taught that disabled people wish to be independent and don't want any attention drawn to their special circumstances, and they don't want us to push their chairs or grab their white canes. We assume that because there is a law guaranteeing access for all, that access exists and is sufficient and already present in the buildings where it is required. Once the law has been put in place, we assume any needs have already been met. Most of us are unfamiliar with the needs of disabled people- -we don't know how to act around disabled people, what we should do, and what we shouldn't, so perhaps that's why we try not to see the disabled. In that respect, this book fills a dire need: it brings us into the day-to-day life of a remarkable yet ordinary disabled person, introducing us to his life story, dreams, and desires.
Really had an imact.......2003-07-26
I shared some of John Hockenberry's book with folks at an elderly home in Alphabet City, NYC. They enjoyed his writing as much as I did, and I'm sure many of them could relate to his experiences in a wheel chair. Hockenberry's words were inspirational to all of us.

Very nice book with hundreds of wartime action-photographs.......1998-07-08
The book contains hundreds of photograhps of mainly the BMW R12 and some of the R75. All photographs are taken in Worldwar II and represent valuable historic information on how these bikes were used in combat. It also reveals the strategies being used by motorcycle companies and shows some of the human suffering of this era. Furthermore it contains valuable technical information, drawings and exploded views of the BMW R75. Highly recommended to anyone interested in this part of the history or for those who are involved in BMW R12 or R75 restoration.

Book Description
Laid out like a dictionary A-to-Z (much like Ambrose Bierce's
Devil's Dictionary),
Liberwocky takes a close and comedic look at how liberals use and abuse language to manipulate the citizenry and their attitudes. Having forty years of political and media experience, Gold sees through the trickery of today's political rhetoric. And in this book, he exposes their techniques, their verbal twists and devious turns of phrase, in a way that is both provocative and hilarious. Including sections such as: "Truly Stupid Liberal Ideas" (poking fun at the U.N., Peurto Rican statehood, and voting rights for felons) and "The American Liberal's All Time Enemies List" (fifty conservatives liberals love to hate), this book-both mocking and informative-is an enjoyable romp through the language of modern politics.

Not Worth Reviewing.......2007-08-15
Preston Enright has already given this blather as much serious consideration as it deserves. I merely wish to defend the honor of Ambrose Bierce and his "Devil's Dictionary" from the smudge of comparison with this sophomoric imitation.
Try listening to actual liberals........2007-08-13
Rather than using the filter of Victor Gold, people can listen to real life liberals and decide for themselves what they mean. The most popular liberal radio host is Thom Hartmann. He has several books on Amazon, including Unequal Protection: The Rise of Corporate Dominance and the Theft of Human Rights I think the title is self-explanatory. In fact, I think this whole war on liberals is a diversion constructed by corporate propagandists. The Big Business elite need to keep Americans divided to they can continue exploiting the people of the country. I'm sure some right-wingers like bashing liberals because they themselves are making a comfortable living off the anti-social enterprises of King Coal, Big Oil, weapons contractors and the like; but a fair amount of those who have been "Hannitized" or "Limbaughtomized" are simply unaware that they are shooting themselves in the foot.
For them, viewing the award winning documentary The Corporation might be a useful effort to break free from the various deceptions and thought traps that Victor Gold and other "perception managers" lay out in books like "Liberwocky."
I felt cheated.......2005-02-24
The author and publisher use every trick possible to expand this "book" to over 200 pages (huge font, blank pages, etc.). It should be less than 50 pages long and sell for less than half the price.
A conservative dictionary.......2004-12-05
The author of this tongue-in-cheek dictionary of favorite liberal terms doesn't have the ascerbic wit of Ann Coulter, but his writing is definitely a "kinder, gentler" version of hers. Nonetheless, his definitions may cause liberal eyebrows to rise, and liberal gorge to rise, especially when he skewers Senator Clinton and her "secret" diary. It's all in good clean fun, though, and should be taken that way by every reader. I know that's not possible, because liberals really don't have a well-developed sense of humor, but they should try, anyway!
Alice Knows.......2004-08-23
Liberwocky by Victor Gold is funny indeed. But as one makes the journey through all the definitions that have become acceptable in media vocabulary, Liberwocky becomes profound and then frightening.
Alice In Wonderland has held up for a long time as a valid insight into the world of politics. Again, Mr. Gold has demonstrated how aptly it applies to the conversations of today.
It is frightening to realize as one reads, that words, ideas, reports, tales, myths, have become so much a part of what one hears that one has accepted them as they come. I breathe a sigh of relief that I read this before I started believing it all. Habits are hard to break. Now I must start challenging the liberals in my life.

Book Description
Facts, Not Fear is a guidebook countering the irresponsible claims of environmental extremists, giving a more balanced view of the many environmental issues encountered today. In simple, non-technical language, authors Michael Sanera and Jane Shaw explain the myths and facts concerning many major environmental topics, and show you how to set the record straight.
Each of the 20 topical chapters was reviewed by acknowledged experts, and include answers to questions about the environment commonly asked by children and suggestions for easy-to-do activities.

An excuse for inaction.......2006-11-23
They claim to base their claims on scientific research however scientific research can be biased in itself. In addtion the research they make a huge generalization after reading about one scientific study for each issue. How can they claim DDT was banned becuase of advocacy, not scientific research? Migrant workers are exposed to cancer-causing levels of pesticides...even though the average person is not--therefore we need to think about all people being affected. Just because some problems have improved in the US, it does not mean they have improved globally. A tree is NOT a renewable resource becuase the genetics of each tree is unique...the fact that humans cut down "good" trees means we are weakening forests' genetics by selecting "bad" traits. Basically everything in this book does not offer both sides. Instead they accuse people that present a "gloomy" picture to be "tilted." This book is also outdated. Some issues they criticize in the book are now looked at differently, thanks to scientific research and advocacy. If they have such problems with advocacy, why don't they attack tobacco companies for God's sake?
Refreshingly Rational.......2003-02-13
I am not a parent, but even I found this book to be a nice reference and an enjoyable read. It is rare and refreshing to find a book that treats environmentalism from a rational perspective.
Naturally, environmentalists are quick to attack it, as they should--such applications of reason and sound judgement threaten their agenda.
The information is thoroughly cited: you won't find the vague references to mystery "sources" prevalent in environmentalist books.
a balanced book?.......2002-10-22
Well researched, according to Sanera and Shaw, now means that you don't have to cite your sources. It means that one sentence claiming schools are creating "environmental crusaders" out of our children can be followed by a sentence outlining that 30 states have mandated environmental education and that means they are obviously enviromental crusaders. While it would be nice to think of this book as balanced, they need to do a lot more to convince anyone that they provide this so called balanced approach.
While I agree that the larger processes need to be discussed before the activism or clean-up can start (and they would probably say we in the US don't need either of those two things), they obviously need to go back and do some science research of their own. And yes, they need to do science research. They extoll their book as being enough of a resource to teach parents how to teach their children science, and it hurts me to say this, but if many of the elementary teachers in our country don't think they can teach science well, it is an injustice to our children to have parents with no scientific background teaching our children watered down, mislead ideas.
It is good to read something that points out flaws in extreme enviromentalism, but not surprising to see that their text suffers from the same flaws they claim envionmentalists "suffer" from. Exaggeration, taking facts out of context, over simplifiction and appealing to parents as equals in search for a higher truth are only some of the techniques they employ.
Add Balance to your view of the Environment.......2002-04-08
This book highlights the other side of issues like Deforestation and Global Warming in a world where the mainstream media doesn't acknowledge that another side exists. The point of this book and another excellent resource entitled "Junk Science Judo," is that statistics can be manipulated by anyone with an agenda and that it is generally those groups with an agenda that are making the all-to-common alarmist statements. If you have children, the information in this book can help you to address their concerns and add a little balance to their views.
A useful resource.......2002-01-22
As a parent who is also a teacher of high school Environmental Science, I found this book very informative and solid. The textbooks I am required to use in teaching environmental issues are unfortunately very biased and one-sided. I cannot in good conscience teach children that their world is doomed, and this book presents a balanced look at problems and presents possible solutions where needed. The graphs are extremely telling and useful. While much so-called environmental "science" is really pushing a socialist political agenda, this book presents statistics and facts in a way that is accessible to all. It is a useful resource for both parents and teachers of all ages of children.
