Book Description
This book contains clear, concise explanations for over 2,200 aquatic habitat terms. This glossary was developed to encourage the consistent and standard use of terminology used by workers who conduct inventories and analyses of aquatic habitats. Standardization of terms and definitions provides a common language for habitat work and ensures the applicability and accuracy of inventory methods. With growing demands for the multiple-use of aquatic resources, the importance of aquatic resource inventories and knowledge of the complex interactions of hydrology, hydraulics, and geomorphology is extremely important to understanding the overall effect of biological, chemical, and physical factors on an entire ecosystem. While hydrologic processes and aquatic habitats exhibit consistent patterns, terminology and methods for aquatic habitat inventories vary among organizations, agencies, and disciplines. The resulting confusion and misunderstanding limit exchange and comparison of data. Researchers and managers are hindered from sharing data because terminology and methods are not standardized. With the rapid development of computer programs, the need for standardization of inventory systems has grown in concert with increased opportunity for data analysis at the local and landscape scale. The book was prepared with a broad perspective on aquatic habitat terminology. Because of the interactive and integrative nature of aquatic systems with the landscape, it includes many terms from the disciplines of remote sensing, meteorology, hydrology, hydraulics, and geomorphology. Inventory and analysis of aquatic ecosystems have evolved from a localized approach to a watershed or landscape perspective and so are intertwined with ecology, meteorology, hydrology, hydraulics, and geology. This book is intended for researchers, educators, managers, writers and all others concerned with habitat protection, conservation, and restoration.

A very well glossary.......2000-11-10
Through his book, Glossary of Aquatic Habitat Inventory Terminology, Neil B. Armantrout has attempted to standardize the terms and definitions used in inventorying and analyzing aquatic habitats. This is a difficult task due to the variety of disciplines involved. Hydrology, climatology, geomorphology, meteorology, and ecology are just a few of the fields contributing terms to this glossary. In many instances, terms associated with aquatic habitats have different meanings within different disciplines and organizations.
In every field of science, the ability to exchange and compare data is critical. This can not be done if researchers and scientists do not share a common language. Armantrout's glossary is an effort to facilitate scientific exchange and prevent misunderstanding. Over 2,200 aquatic habitat terms are defined. Where appropriate, more than one definition is provided. Definitions are brief: usually no more than one to three sentences. Occasionally, a definition will be accompanied by an illustration, though this is infrequent. A typical page contains twenty-five to thirty terms with plenty of space between terms. The result is a glossary that is easy to access and read. Many of the entries contain "see" references to other terms. These terms appear in italicized print and are quite numerous.
This glossary is recommended to academic libraries, large public libraries, and those special libraries devoted to the biological and physical sciences. The book's approach is wide ranging. Consequently, researchers from diverse scientific fields will find it useful. Input from the members of several scientific societies was received by the compiler of this glossary; yet, it is not overly technical and will appeal to amateur naturalists as well as students writing research papers.

Great Book!.......1999-06-22
Hi, I am working at ILISA Spanish Language Institute in San Jose, Costa Rica and I just want to say that this book helps our students a lot by giving them helpful inside information and thus by getting to know all the ins and outs about this fantastic country. Thanks!
User Friendly format but not as thorough.......1998-12-02
Good if your looking for nice hotels although one big inaccuracy. Hotel La Mariposa in Manuel Antonio is not nearly as wonderful as they described it, much nicer hotels are available. Good background info on the country.

Book Description
The Economics of Nature Management takes a unique portfolio management perspective on the worldwide deterioration of the natural environment. For many emerging countries, nature conservation boils down to the purely economic decision of investing limited funds in nature potentially at the expense of investing in other necessary imperatives such as education or infrastructure. As a result, the authors see the function of the book as twofold. First, to measure environmental services and biological assets and second it demonstrates how it applies the economic theory of nature management through case studies.

Book Description
This book relates language testing practice to current views of communicative language teaching and testing. It builds on the theoretical background expounded in Bachman's a href="/elt/global/isbn/0-19-437065-8/"Fundamental Considerations in Language Testing/a and examines the design, planning, and organization of tests. The book is divided into three sections which discuss 1) objectives and expectations, the context of language testing, and the abilities to be tested; 2) the process of test development, including blueprints, resources, operationalization, and scoring methods; and 3) ten examples which illustrate the principles discussed in Parts One and Two.
Customer Reviews:
Test development concepts and procedures for the real world.......2000-10-08
Bachman and Palmer have targeted this book halfway between theory and practice, with an audience whose interests are practical but not limited to classroom testing. The book is divided into three parts: the first is concerned with presenting their model of testing theory, the second provides a step by step account of how to develop tests for real life contexts and the classroom, and the third provides ten case studies of different kinds of tests, worked out in greater or lesser detail according to the model they present earlier. The book is therefore useful for students beyond a practically oriented teacher training level, and is suitable to introduce the concept of test development as a team effort, a project planned and managed by a team leader. At the same time, it is simple enough for those on applied linguistics or language teacher education courses who do not have the time or interest to pursue theoretical issues in detail. It presents one model, that of the authors, which draws a great deal on Bachman (1990) Fundamental considerations in language testing. It does not compare or evaluate different models in the way McNamara (1996) does. All of this makes the book accessible and useful, hence its popularity in the sales figures. The emphasis they place on keeping an eye of the context of situation and an analysis of language use and related factors as the basis for test design are very useful and sound. Also, the procedures given for developing tests are easy enough to follow. However, the book has at least a couple of things that might make it a bit difficult to follow, at least until you get used to it. For a start, the language used by the authors tends to be a bit dry and abstract. For example, for they call the planning stage of test development `design', the writing stage `operationalization' and the use and review stage `administration'. They use the abbreviation TLU for target language use situation, a way of referring more or less to the sociolinguistic concept of context of situation. The use of terms like `channel', `form', `language' and `type' in the section on the communicative context may be a bit abstract for some. Despite the many examples of real situations used to illustrate their concepts throughout the book, the writing remains uninspiring, and it might have been better to use more colloquial language, a la Steven Pinker or Jean Aitchison. In addition, the structure or organization of the book with its three sections requires that some ideas are presented not in one section, but are found in smaller bits throughout the book. For example, the material on `quality control' for tests, the plan for the evaluation of usefulness, is split between the theoretical coverage in section one, the actual `how to do it' in section two, and the various case studies in section three. Overall, however, I found their approach sound, and the book is certainly a very useful one. I would recommend its use in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in applied linguistics and in language testing.

Book Description
Built around the case studies of eight students who have had difficulty learning to read and write and for whom traditional methods of testing have proven inadequate,. this innovative book allows the reader to think along with the author during the administration, recording, observation, and analysis of students' actual reading and writing. In this way future and practicing teachers learn how their daily classroom activities can yield valuable insights about what students can do, how they learned to read and write so far, and what possibilities exist for alternative instruction in the future.
The book describes eight students and gives examples of their work, then shows what testing they have undergone and what authentic measures can do for them. It highlights the limitations of standardized tests regarding the lives and learning of real students. And it gives teachers the tools to supplement or refute standardized test results with careful analyses of authentic reading and writing performances. A listing of literacy tasks commonly used in standardized tests helps teachers analyze what test scores mean, or don't mean, by connecting the actual reading or writing required on them to language processing theory.
For teachers, reading specialists, and others looking for realistic ways to help children learn to read.
Customer Reviews:
If You Have a Reading/Writing Challenged Child - Read This!.......2000-11-16
I read this book with the greatest interest because my child is one of the case studies used by Jay Simmons. I found the book very interesting not only because I was eager to read about my child but also because I found the entire book to be of interest as the parent of two learning disabled children. As the parent of two children with reading/writing weaknesses, I am always searching for information to assit them and also to assit me in being better prepared for working with my school district. I am going to request that my school board and current principal read Jay's book in the hopes that they can see areas where they can improve on meeting the needs of our district's children. I would recommend that anyone with a child who has reading and writing problems read this book before your next I.E.P. meeting. It will give you some very helpful knowledge.

Book Description
This volume contains papers that were presented at HYP2006, the eleventh international Conference on Hyperbolic Problems: Theory, Numerics and Applications held at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, France, July 17-21, 2006. This biennial series of conferences has become one of the most important international events in Applied Mathematics. As computers became more and more powerful, the interplay between theory, modelling, and numerical algorithms gained considerable impact, and the scope of HYP conferences expanded accordingly. The field is currently in interaction with a variety of scientific domains, including fluid dynamics, physics, electromagnetism, chemistry, biology, road and network traffic, and engineering. Many of these papers present new effective numerical methods and their application in various contexts.
