Book Description
Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson transformed his field with an audacity that did not always sit well with his publishers. Gonzo Judaism embraces that same spirit, challenging today’s Jews to reclaim their rebel roots, even if the consequences of their actions are disquieting to the leaders of a largely complacent Jewish establishment.
Rabbi Niles Elliot Goldstein explores how this revolutionary drive can reshape and revitalize contemporary Judaism—a Judaism many find out of touch and irrelevant. His fresh, maverick approach urges us to take risks and think freely, but also to look back into the past in order to move forward into our future. Gonzo Judaism offers practical tools for creating a more accessible, meaningful, and celebratory Jewish life.
· Learn why the current nostalgia- and fear-based Judaism has utterly failed to resonate with the modern Jew.
· Discover how to gain inspiration both inside and outside the conventional synagogue setting.
· Become a “spiritual archaeologist” and recover powerful practices that have been lost over the centuries.
This isn’t your run-of-the-mill Judaica book. It is a bold, no-holds-barred manifesto that meets us where we are, a much-needed and daring work that re-visions Jewish identity, community, holidays, and ritual, written with both the credibility of an insider toiling in the trenches and the piercing insight of an outsider observing from the margins. Gonzo Judaism is required reading for anyone in search of an adventurous but authentic path toward spiritual growth and religious wisdom.

A Gonzo review.......2007-01-31
Okay! Wow! I devoured this book with ever-increasing hope that finally, a Leader in modern Judaism had finally "got" the idea that Jews had contributed the underlying values of Western Civilization and NOW it was time to come out of the closet and help this "Wounded World"- and, to stop just railing against hatred and violence, hunger and poverty, hypocrisy and corruption...that now it was time to once again contribute to civilization as responsible, caring Teachers of Humanity...to mend humanity!
But, the deeper I got into gonzoland, the more I saw a repeat of the old, automatic, "them-and-us" mentality...loathingly swiping at everyone from Jesus to Tom Cruise; from Rabbi Schneerson to Mick Jagger. The author's solution for the Elite People of this wounded world? - Join his cool club to keep alive a thousand years of old un-inspected solutions and rituals; to keep us smelling incense, looking good and going nowhere. However, I suspect that the author knows he is gleefully dicing with the devil and should get over his grumpiness, lift his game, and write a manual of how 12 million Jews can teach the remaining 6 billion schmucks the secret of success...to enroll the entire world into living a better, more productive, happy, ethical life! Leviticus 19:34.
C'mon Rebbe, time to teach. 5 Gold stars for enthusiasm.
Smart and Fresh.......2006-12-13
Goldstein's vision and approach to redefine a practice of Judaism seems like a breath of fresh air in the dusty conventional rabbinic world.
At last, somebody understood why young jews desert synagogues!
A Jewish Hunter Thompson???.......2006-12-05
This is an impassioned take modern Judaism, but can serve as a clarion call to those who would wish to rejuvenate their lives. Goldstein is passionate, and humorous.

You think Jews don't evangelize? Think again. In Judaism for Everyone Shmuley Boteach imagines a future in which his religion provides "a locus of spirituality for men and women of all faiths." This sounds like a pretty good future. "In some religions the purpose of life is to perfect oneself," Shmuley begins. "For Judaism the purpose of life is the healing of the world." So, in the same way that Buddhist and Hindu traditions have spawned global interest in Eastern meditation and yoga, Judaism's broad concern for the holiness of this world may catch on with gentiles. Particular traditions of observance such as the Sabbath, for instance, may help gentiles to heal the alienation and lower the noise level of modern life. Throughout this book, Shmuley describes Judaism in terms that are both startlingly fresh and strangely commonsensical, a balanced perspective that will appeal to many readers, not least those who enjoyed his bestselling Kosher Sex. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
The outspoken author of the best-selling Kosher Sex turns his energy and erudition to the core teachings of Judaism itself, presenting the Jewish faith as a source of inspiration and meaning to people of all religions.

Superb concise & totally a pleasure to Read.......2005-09-16
I love this book & will keep it for revisiting. A pleasure to read. The writer gives the depth of someone who understands Judaism while at the same time demonstrates a love & grasp of Torah. Uplifting to everyone both Jew & Non-Jew.
A wonderful book of advocacy for Judaism .......2005-05-16
Shmuely Boteach is a somewhat controversial figure in the Jewish world. He is a dynamic outreach person who some believe has gone too far in his outreaching. But his love of Judaism and his love of people are very clear in this work. He is the kind of spiritual teacher who does not content himself with spouting platitudes but aims to make a real difference in people's lives.
He dares to be different, and he dares to be outspoken. And he dares to say that Judaism is not getting its fundamental messages across to its own people as well as to others.
Boteach writes in a vivid way. And generally his spirit of wishing to reach out to help others runs all through the work.
He sees Judaism as a living faith that has a message for mankind which no only those born as Jewish, but others can rationally and emotionally adopt as their own.
This is a wonderful book of advocacy for Judaism and is highly recommended.
Judaism for Everyone?.......2003-01-04
This book takes the glory of Judaism and reduces it to some very simple ideas clearly meant to appeal to simple thinkers. This is not Judaism for everyone it is Judaism for no one.
The author's only objective is to appeal to a mass market so as to increase the books sales.
He shows no great thought whatsoever in this simplistic book. His interpretations and ideas are infantile; this author is by no means a great thinker.
I believe the author has forgotten what true Judaism is really about (it is full of complexities and contradictions that require great thinkers and learned persons to interpret and explain them properly and with great sensibilties for its many traditions). The author has learned instead what it takes to sell many books.
A breif example; his explanation of why Dairy and Meat together are not Kosher is a new one and is ridiculous one. Abraham ate dairy and meat. No Prophet has ever claimed in a dietary law that dairy and meat together are prohibited, you think the famed Rabbi should no this by now.
Unfortunately there is absolutely nothing of any value to learn about Judaism from this book.
A very disappointed reader.
A celebration of humanity and our relationship to God........2002-12-30
I'm an athiest and ex-Catholic who bought this book with some skepticism. Yet, I heard the author being interviewed on the radio, which piqued my curiosity. What a wonderful, life-affirming book this is! It is written with a joy and verve that celebrates Life and Living by trumpeting its positive message relating to man, his strengths and weaknesses, and his relationship to God. From the author's explantions of the Creation story, the duties of man and wife in marriage, and some of the Jewish Holidays, such as Rosh Hashanah, this book will inspire you and make you happy to be alive in the world. In my opinion, so much of organized religion is negative with its emphasis on sin and the life hereafter. This book contains an entirely contrary message -- that man is good, that his soul is not tainted with original sin at birth. Man is good because he was created in the image of God, who is here with us, now, in the present. This book offers a truly uplifting, spiritual experience for the reader -- even for a cynical old athiest like me. Thank you, Rabbi!
The latest and greatest hit by the world's greatest rabbi.......2002-04-24
H.R.H. Prince El-Hassan bin Talal of Jordan wrote: "In the modern world, it has become clear that people of all religions must bridge these differences and work together, to ensure our survival and realize the vision of peace that all faiths share". Yet, how do we put these beautiful words for world peace and harmony into real practice ? Is it enough to simply "tolerate" or "put up" with someone else's religion, barely trying to squeeze some vague common grounds out of one another's religious creeds ? The answer is a definite no, as this author shows us: we can easily go one step further. We can actually come to embrace one another's religions, by learning from them, and incorporate some of their principles and values into our everyday lives - which usually does not conflict with, but rather reinforces or enriches, the values or beliefs we may already be holding through our own religion. This step is extraordinarily exposed by H.E. Great Rabbi Shmuel Boteach, one of the world's greatest orthodox rabbis, and surely one of the top Halachic thinkers of the XXI Century. When he was appointed as Rabbi to Oxford University at age 21, young 'Shmuley' immediately embarked on an extremely challenging task, yet very successfully: to bring the students of Oxford - Catholics, Protestants, Mormons, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, and even Muslims - to share in the spirit of Judaism, through his marvelous creation which lives to this day, the renowned "L'Chaim Society". Students from all sorts of cultural, social and religious backgrounds came to experience the atmosphere and magic of the Holy Shabbat, the teachings of the Sacred Torah and the Holy Talmud, enriching their lives spiritually and culturally, yet without ever giving up anything from their own religion. Without any attempt whatsoever at proselytization, Rabbi Boteach has always worked to propose the great values and teachings of Judaism - universal values for all mankind - to those of other faiths. Indeed, to become just "a little bit Jewish", as shows us the author, can considerably enrich our daily lives, minds and spirits. This book, a true masterpiece not only in terms of intellectual work and rich content, but also for its superbly ravishing prose, is Rabbi Boteach's culmination in bringing Judaism to the world. It is a book truly "for everyone" who would like to learn more about Judaism, and maybe (no commitment !) put a bit of Judaism into their lives. Easy to read, fun to browse through, this book is great material for mind and soul alike.

Book Description
"So much hard work goes into the creation of a quality sermon, and upon its completion, it will be forgotten by some, remembered inaccurately by others, and cherished forever by a few. That is why it is such a blessing that Rabbi Irwin Groner, one of America's leading Conservative rabbis, has collected his sermons in book form so that we can all have access to them."
-Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People
"This wonderful collection of Rabbi Groner's sermons is inspirational and instructional. His teachings on faith, family, freedom, forgiveness, and the future are universal in their appeal and will touch the hearts and souls of people from every faith community. His sermons give us reasons to hope, questions to ponder, and inspiration to make ourselves and our communities better. Through these discourses, Rabbi Groner opens the doors of the synagogue for all to enter and experience a greater understanding of and appreciation for Judaism."
-Jennifer Granholm, Governor, State of Michigan
"Rabbi Groner's sermons speak 'from the heart to the heart.' They speak directly of the transcendent human yearnings for understanding and connection, for brotherhood and peace. The rabbi's words demonstrate his remarkable ability to understand our innermost fears and needs. The reader is then inspired to share in the author's vision: that our response to injustice and cruelty should not be rebellion, but faith in the power of each of us to help repair our battered world. Rabbi Groner's compassion and wisdom will help us live more courageous and worthy lives."
-Carl Levin, Senator, State of Michigan
A good sermon is an art, as much in the way it is put together as delivered. Renewing Jewish Faith is Rabbi Irwin Groner at the top of his form, and this moving, insightful, and lucidly written collection offers observations on Judaism and a lively presentation of the values of the Jewish faith.
The focus of Rabbi Groner's sermons is the central importance of the synagogue in the renewal of Jewish life-it is the institution in which Jewish values achieve permanence. He often argues that human nature cannot be understood exclusively in secular terms and that the religious dimension of human existence must be understood as the basis by which life itself acquires meaning. In this spirit, Rabbi Groner's sermons give voice to both the optimistic and pessimistic opinions about the future of Jewish life in the free world.
Groner addresses basic issues confronting Jewish beliefs and tradition in contemporary life. After the first section, "Folk," the book goes on to address faith, family, freedom, forgiveness, and future with sermons such as "When Life Is Not Fair," "On Attaining Maturity," and "The Challenge of Freedom."
Whether you are familiar with Rabbi Groner's writings or not, Renewing Jewish Faith is a timeless contribution to the study of human nature and a must-have collection of some of his best sermons.

I was disappointed in this travel guide-- Lonely Planet's is far superior. I didn't find much of the information I was seeking in the index-- as an example, there's no index entry for "Monteverde"-- one of the most popular destinations.

In a third collection of riveting young adult short stories, following Night Terrors and Trapped!, Lois Duncan draws on her experience as the award-winning author of more than 40 young adult suspense thrillers to put together a choice selection of tales about being on the brink. A dozen stellar teen novelists--including fresh new talents Ellen Wittlinger and Gail Carson Levine--have each contributed an original story in which a young person is on the edge mentally, physically, or psychologically.
In Graham Salisbury's "The Ravine," a boy teeters on the cliff of a high jungle waterfall, but then proves himself by refusing his friends' challenge to jump. In "Fine?" Margaret Peterson Haddix brilliantly depicts a young girl's sense of alienation from "normal" life as she waits in the hospital for a diagnosis of terminal illness. Alden Carter displays previously unsuspected comic talent with "Pig Brains," in which a boy goes way out on the edge to vanquish a bully with a well-planned gross-out. William Sleator, in "Unbalanced," makes us hope for more stories drawn from his experiences as a rehearsal pianist for the Boston Ballet. Terry Davis crafts a heartbreaking scenario for a cinematic episode about the flight of Hmong refugees from the Pather Lao. Other stories by Pete Hautman, Liza Ketchum, Winifred Morris, Gloria Skurzynski, and Rich Wallace explore different aspects of brinksmanship, in a collection (perfect for reading aloud) that will have teens tracking down the novels of these authors. (Ages 10 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
On the edge of the sea, drowning in a beach of quicksand...
On the edge of occupied Cambodia, waiting to cross the Mekong River to freedom...
On the edge of knowing your fainting spell may be due to a brain tumor...
On the edge of your toes in a ballet recital, waiting for the next sabotage...
The edge isn't always obvious. Rarely is it clearly defined. But in each of these twelve remarkable stories, young people find themselves in situations where -- mentally, physically, psychologically -- they are on the edge. Like her previous best-selling collections Night Terrors: Stories of Shadow and Substance and Trapped! Cages of Mind and Body, Lois Duncan's new anthology of original short stories by acclaimed young adult authors is an exciting mix of terror and thrills, humor and heartbreak. On the Edge: Stories at the Brink is a wild ride that will keep you on the edge...of your seat.
Customer Reviews:
Will keep you on the edge.......2000-06-08
This is an anthology (third in a series edited by Lois Duncan) concentrating on kids who are each "on the edge" in one way or another and how they deal with their individual issues.
As is many anthology books, the stories are hit and miss but most of them kept my attentipn and many I thoroughly enjoyed. Personal favorates include "Pig Brains," by Alden Carter about a boy using unusual methods to get rid of a bully (funny and gross), and "Fine?" by Margaret Peterson Haddix, about a girl reasessing her life while waiting in the hospital for a diagnosis of her terminal illness (touching and brave).
Many of the authors are new to me, but after reading their contributions I find myself wanting to check out their other works. This is a good book if you are looking to delve into the psychology of young adults today and discover some of the everyday - and sometimes not so everyday - hardships their endure. Overall an interesting read.

Book Description
Old World monkeys (Cercopithecoidea) are the most successful and diverse group of living nonhuman primates in terms of the number of species, behavioral repertoires, and ecology. Among our closest living relatives, they have much to teach us about the processes of evolution and the principles of ecology. This volume presents a broad, technical account of cercopithecoid biology including molecular, behavioral, and morphological approaches to phylogeny, population structure, allometry, fossil history, functional morphology, ecology, cognitive capabilities, social behavior, and conservation. It will be the definitive reference on this group for researchers, graduate students and advanced undergraduates in primatology, animal behavior, paleontology, morphology, systematics, and physical anthropology.

Customer Reviews:
Save your $$$.......2002-10-12
First off let me state that this book should have been named
"The anything BUT complete book of Devils and Demons".
Actually it has very little to do with Devils, Demons or anything of the like, this is just another one of those books that handles this fascinating subject in the uptight biased wore out judeo/christian manner that i for one am quite tired of, the author if we dare to call him that obviously wrote this book for a fast buck, i havnt read any of his other books and since reading this one i have no intention on doing so. His style is enough to give A person of even the strongest constitution a vein bulging headache. Like the title says, do your self a favor and save your $$$ for something more accurate and fulfilling.
An Utter Mess.......2000-11-13
From its misleading title--this volume is rather slender given its claim for being "complete"--to its lack of bibliographic notes and historical and factual unreliability, Ashley's tome is an utter mess. Poorly written and organized, with only a three-page index, this is a book that cannot be taken seriously. "Devils and Demons," in fact, seems like a haphazard collection of the author's notes on interesting trivia he happened to bounce on, without bothering to reexamine his sources or concern himself with the formalities of English grammar. For example, in his brief discussion of C.S. Lewis's "Screwtape Letters," Ashley describes Lewis's book as "a delightful collection of business communications between a minor devil called Screwtape and his boss," evidently forgetting that Screwtape was a "major" devil corresponding to his underling nephew, Wormwood, as anyone even slightly familiar with the literature of fictional demonology knows. Such sloppy errors that are sprinkled through Ashley's work brings the subject down to the level of tabloid journalism, and with the same level of reliability. The reader would best be served by searching for other, more scholarly books which are abundant in this peculiar area of study, such as the "Compendium Maleficarum" or Robbins' "Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology." But "The Complete Book of Devils and Demons" is a complete waste of dead trees.
A Sophomoric treatment of an Interesting subject.......2000-11-10
Leonard Ashley's pathetic excuse of designing this book for the "sound bite" and "limited attention span" generation is an insult and affront to his readers.
The book is nothing but a mish-mash and mosaic of information culled from the Internet that the author has so carelessly put together.
For beginners and the uninitiated- this might briefly prove interesting- but in general- this book is a sleeping pill in disguise.
Fascinating but hard to follow.......2000-08-20
The book is a good reference point for those looking into this subject for the first time. While the author provides a lot of information, her style in presenting it leaves something to be desired. The book format is put together in such a way that it makes it difficult for the reader to follow. There are also a lot of errors in grammar like misspelled words and run-on sentences. It seems the author would have noticed this, but I guess he was in a hurry. If you can live with the format then you may want to check it out. However, you may want to try "Encyclopedia of Hell" by Miriam Van Scott.
Ignorant, frivolous treatment of a fascinating subject.......2000-08-05
What a shame Leonard Ashley (who has no doubt spent some time looking into his subject) is unable to string an intelligent sentence together. This ridiculously pedestrian book demeans the fascinating subject of demonology through a nauseous trail of sloppy ideas, puerile humour and incongruous, misplaced anecdotes. A work of zero interest to even the most unsophisticated of students.

An excellent anthology of 17th century prose and poetry.......1999-09-25
A beautiful volume divided into two parts. The first contains the prose of writers such as John Milton and George Herbert, and the second, poetry by people like John Donne, Ben Jonson, and George Herbert. Each auther has his own bibliography. Even Francis Quarles emblematic poetry is encluded with the wood cuttings. For all of its beauty, there is a severe lack of female contributers and the the tone of the book is very religious.
Book Description
The publication of The Broadview Anthology of Seventeenth-Century Verse and Prose is a literary event; this comprehensive collection is the first anthology of the period to reflect the breadth of seventeenth-century studies in recent decades. Containing the work of over one hundred writers, from John Chamberlain at the beginning of the century to Elisabeth Singer Rowe at its end, The Broadview Anthology of Seventeenth-Century Verse and Prose has generous selections from the work of all major writers, and a representation of the work of virtually every writer of significance. The editors have included complete works wherever possible. A headnote by the editors introduces each author, and each selection has been newly annotated.
While material that has traditionally made up much of the 17th-century canon is well represented, there are two areas in particular in which scholarship of the 17th-century has changed, and both are reflected in this new Broadview anthology; first, the work of women writers has begun to move out of the margins, and in this anthology such work figures prominently, with extensive selections not only from canonical writers such as Behn and Bradstreet, but also from other writers (such as Katherine Philips and Margaret Cavendish) who have been receiving considerable scholarly attention in recent years.
Second, there has been a redefinition of literature to include popular culture (and a corresponding shift towards a more historical approach). In a radical departure from the exclusively "high" culture taught in previous generations, this anthology includes memoirs, letters, political texts, travel writing, prophetic literature, street ballads, and pamphlet literature. Writing from America as well as from the British Isles is here, alongside a full representation of the literary poetry and prose of the period, such as the poetry of Jonson; the prose of Bacon; the metaphysical poetry of Donne, Herbert, Marvell, and others; the lyric verse of Herrick; and substantial selections from the poetry and prose of Milton and Dryden. (While Samson Agonistes is here in its entirety, Milton's epic poems have been excluded, in order to allow space for other works not so readily accessible elsewhere.)

Book Description
The poet George Sandys is one of the most interesting figures of the Renaissance period, his life and career encompassing a number of varied aspects. As a colonialist leader in Virginia he and his colleagues pursued a lenient policy towards the Indians which nearly cost the colony its existence. Returning to England, and settling at Great Tew along with other poets such as William Chillingworth and Lord Falkland, he won limited favour at the Caroline court; although he was loyal to the king, and adopted a richly Laudian style for his religious verse, he was implacably opposed to the divisive and confrontational policies of the Laudian church, and became an increasingly outspoken critic of absolutist government. His last work, a translation of a Latin religious play by Hugo Grotius, was the first in a series of literary attacks by moderate Royalists on Archbishop Laud. This book, the first recent examination of his life and work, sheds new light both on an unjustly neglected figure, and on the literature of religious and political moderation prior to the Civil War. JAMES ELLISON is Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Strathclyde.
