Book Description
For more than sixty years, The Wall Street Journal has prided itself not just on its serious journalism, but also on the whimsical and arcane stories that amuse and delight its readers. In that regard, animal stories have proven to be the most beloved of all. Now, veteran Journal reporter and Page One editor Ken Wells gathers the finest, funniest, and most fascinating of these animal tales in one exceptional book.
Here are lighthearted, witty stories of breakthroughs in goldfish surgery, the untiring efforts of British animal lovers who guide lovesick toads across dangerous motorways, and the quest to tame doggy anxieties by prescribing the human pacifier Prozac. Other pieces reflect on mankind's impact on the animal kingdom: a close-up look at the nascent fish-rights movement, the retirement of U.S. Air Force chimpanzees that once soared through space, and ongoing scientific efforts to defeat that most hardy enemy -- the cockroach.
Each of these fifty-odd stories -- from the outlandish to the poignant -- exemplifies the superb feature writing that makes The Wall Street Journal one of America's best-written newspapers. This charming and utterly captivating collection will be a joy not only to animal lovers, but to all those who appreciate artful storytelling by writers who are obviously having a wonderful time spinning the tales.

My dad is in the story on page 43. I get to go to work to help him catch the animals out of peoples houses. It is alot of work and sometimes dangerous but I get to learn alot about animals.
Beyond bulls and bears.......2004-02-06
No matter the state of the economy, the weakness of the markets, or the dudgeon of the editorial page, there's always one part of The Wall Street Journal that brings a smile -- the center column on the front page known in our household as the "nut box." "Herd on the Street" collects the best of a special genre of nut box stories, the ones about animals.
From dogs and cats to roaches, sturgeons, and Punxsutawney Phil, most every corner of the animal kingdom is represented here. The essays are almost uniformly well written, entertaining, and sometimes even educational. More than a few are laugh-out-loud funny, some are quite memorable, and one at least is unexpectedly poignant -- a contribution by slain WSJ reporter Daniel Pearl.
Animal lovers might well find themselves sitting down and reading this title from end to end. And certainly, people who otherwise have no sympathy with or interest in the Journal will find this worth the read. It would make a fine book to keep by your bed, or in a guest bedroom, for an end-of-the-evening treat before resting up in readiness for what The Street may throw at you in the morning.

New Love Old Problems, Part 6.......2006-04-17
Momo has walked in on a strange scene. Misao is asleep on the break room's couch, and Kiley is kissing her on her face. This is all the proof she needs to know that she can never replace Misao in Kiley's heart so she heads home to find Sae there, and horror of horrors, finds herself confessing her misery to her former enemy. Momo actually derives some comfort from Sae, especially when she tells Kiley that he should make his feelings knows to Misao...give her the chance to weigh in on his attraction.
Well, once Misao turns him down he discovers his heart is heavy with grief and that he can't quite face Momo at work. So, without further adieu, Kiley embarks on a walking quest to sort out his feelings. Meanwhile, Sae has suggested to Toji that the convenience store Momo works at has an opening, and she finds working beside her former lover to be...challenging, especially when he starts making advances on her.
Well, one would hope now that Kiley has confessed his love to Misao and has been shot down that he will move on and be able to be with Momo... but now with Toji in the picture again that looks next to impossible. But this ambivalence makes Kiley all the more likeable... if he just accepted things without second guessing he would be a dullard. Toji I can't quite wrap my brain out, it's been a year since the break up and he wants back with Momo like nothing happened, like he didn't' break up badly with her because of Sae... it's all too much to process, but it's still very good. Quite a worthwhile read.

Book Description
It's not easy being beautiful. The envy, the jealousy, the vicious rumors spread by your best friend. That's life for young Momo. While everyone thinks that Momo is a wild party girl, the reality is that she is shy and honest. Can Momo confess her love to her classmate Toji, or will her best friend Sae steal him away. It's a bittersweet drama of growing up and fitting in that will charm girls everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
My friend the Enemy, Part 6.......2006-04-14
Momo wakes up in a hotel room to find herself naked and with a man...and not just any man (certainly not her own man Toji), it's Goro, beautiful boy, model, and boyfriend of Sae...and it looks like he's gone all the way with her. As if being taken advantage of is bad enough, but suddenly the door burst open and in comes Toji, Kiley, and the school nurse Misao. Toji attacks Goro for all its worth and Misao comforts Momo, who doesn't know if she has lost her virginity or not but feels ashamed nonetheless.
At Misao's home Toji admits that he and Sae were in bed together kissing, but it stopped when he realized that she wasn't Momo. Kiley brings up the fact that it all seems too convenient, Sae being in his bed and Goro trying to bed with Momo. He believes they were the victims of a set up and decides to launch the ultimate revenge on Sae...to give her a taste of her own medicine, with Toji and Momo's help.
This manga just slipped from teen rating into adult, in my personal opinion. I mean, come on, a friend tries to get revenge on her friend by convincing her boyfriend to date rape her? And what's worse, in order to get back at her they hire an actor to make her think the same has happened to her? It seems that this is not something that Momo would go through with... I mean, sure she might get her revenge, but not by making Sae think she had been raped... just as she had for a while... Overall though, it's still a very good read, but this scenario made it fall a little short of perfect, in my opinion... I still plan on reading the story, but now I feel as if I need to expect the plot to be unbelievable, whereas it seemed entirely plausible before.
Peach girl.......2003-04-20
In the last volume you were left off with Momo waking up in a hotel room, not knowing where she was or how she got there, and finding Goro (a super hot model that is head over heals for sae: a vicious copier of Momo that only tries to steal every happy thing in Momo's life). In this volume, Momo is scared to death at the thought that she might have been "deflowered" by Goro. With the help of Kiley, they figure out that Sae is behind it all. Kiley has thought up a clever plan to get revenge against Sae, and all works out fine until something very wrong happens. I won't give away the ending but this is a book you surely don't want to miss.
Drama, Drama..........2002-12-26
Peach Girl #6 is one of the best books in the series. I got it before I got Book 5, and 4, and I still understood it!
It begins with Momo, waking up in a hotel room with Goro. he tells her they did the deed, and she doesn't believe him. Meaniwhile, Toji is runnning to the rescue. And MEANWHILE, Sae is there for the whole thing. I won't spoil it for you, don't worry! This volume is VERY dramatic, with a LOT of TLC from toji to Momo, and a LOT of unbelieveable things Sae has done. You will NOT BELIEVE how complex her plan was. This book may not be for everyone. It has some verbal profanity, and at the end there's something....distasteful. But the end is a super-duper cliffhanger....But it's an amazing book!
Peach Girl 6.......2002-11-21
Another good addition to the peach girl series. Though the books seem to be getting progressively less realistic, they're still fun.
Kiley's back!.......2002-11-19
When we last saw Momo, she woke up naked in supermodel Goro's room to him asking, "Are you happy Momo? I gave you what you wanted." In volume six of Peach Girl, the big question is, Did he or didn't he?, then What to do next?
As Toji runs to Momo's rescue, he luckily runs into (or rather, is run over by) Kiley and Nurse Misao. Putting aside the immediate question of why are Kiley and Nurse Misao driving together at 1AM, they rush into the hotel room where Goro is holding Momo, and the drama begins. With help from Misao's words of wisdom and comfort and Kiley's conniving brain, Momo and Toji are able to piece together what has happend during the night. Once the stories are cleared up, Kiley is at his all time best, pointing out that when dealing with Sae, head on approaches are futile; the best way to deal with her is to take revenge.
This volume of Peach Girl is full of more drama than comedy. However, the comedy made me (literally) laugh out loud. There is some verbal profanity in this volume, so some more sensitive readers may be offended. The sexual references that are common with Peach Girl are discussed frankly, including a shocking yet funny image of Sae closing the story. All in all, this is the Peach Girl you know and have come to love, only this time Miwa Ueda is not holding back.

Book Description
Tropical fish present some of the best examples of how new species evolve and how complex ecological communities are maintained. Their study has generated important new ideas on the roles of ecology and behaviour in the evolution of species and communities. This book brings together for the first time the results of widely scattered research on fish in tropical rivers, lakes and seas, research that has been stimulated by the splendid opportunities to observe the behaviour of fish in their natural habitats in the clear warm waters. The book opens with an overview of the ecology of tropical freshwater and marine environments and their associated fish faunas, and then presents a number of freshwater studies drawn from the African, South American, Asian and New Guinea tropics. Special consideration is given to the new man-made lakes which have provided large-scale experiments on the change of riverine fish communities to lacustrine ones, and to the great lakes of East Africa for examples of recent species evolution.

Book Description
We are all familiar with sugar as a vital source of energy. Yet the biological importance of the sugars extends way beyond their value as a cellular fuel. Introduction to Glycobiology reveals the true impact of the sugars on biological systems, explaining their functions at the molecular, cellular, and organismal level. With a new two-part structure, the book leads us through the essential principles and concepts upon which the discipline is grounded, before exploring the diverse roles of sugars throughout biological systems, including development, cell signalling, and protein trafficking. It also describes the importance of glycobiology in disease, and explains how an understanding of the link between the two is enabling us to develop new therapeutic strategies. Taking the student from the fundamental principles to the frontiers of the subject, and with more learning features to get the most from their studies, Introduction to Glycobiology remains the ideal resource for students and teachers alike. Online Resource Centre For Lecturers: - Full Colour figures to fully engage their students during classes. For Students: - Hyperlinks to the primary literature, and full articles from appropriate OUP journals, to facilitate access to these additional resources - 3D models of key structures, to help students visualize structures, and gain a proper appreciation of the link between structure and function. - Answers to problems, to aid assessment. - Updates - surveys of key developments in the field, provided on a six-monthly basis, to maintain the currency of the resource.

Book Description
There is currently a great deal of interest in carbohydrate research among chemists and biologists, in both academic and industrial laboratories. One reason is the involvement of oligosaccharide molecules in many recognition phenomena in the living world. Another reason is the growing demand for chiral synthesissugars are an amazingly cheap source of chirality but must be efficiently processed. Thirdly the role of conformation in carbohydrate interactions has stimulated much experimental and theoretical work. There are causal links between advances in each of these fields, from molecular orbitals to immunochemistry, so that no research worker in his narrow specialisation can afford to ignore what is going on elsewhere. Thus a body of knowledge has been built from what is now called the 'glycosciences'. This book attempts to describe glycosciences in their true perspective. Organic chemistry is the backbone of the presentation, but carbohydrate chemistry offers a wealth of supramolecular associations. This book is unique, among similar texts on carbohydrates, in that half its content is devoted to the description of important examples of such interactions. The opening chapters deal with the problems of configuration, conformation, derivatization, and modifications of monosaccharides, with examples on their utilization in total synthesis. The anomeric effectthe most popular of all stereoelectronic effects, and a gift to carbohydrate chemists and chemists in generalis discussed at length. The following chapters deal with oligosaccharides; the essentials of enzymic synthesis, with its high performances; and the sialic acids, which are at the forefront of carbohydrate research. The author describes recognition reactions, including blood group phenomena, interactions involving sialic acids, the active site of heparin, tumour markers, and selectins. The association of sugars with small molecules, notably with inorganic species, is the subject of another chapter. Throughout the book, great attention has been given to practical details especially in the description of experiments involving unfamiliar techniques. Many tables, figures, diagrams, experimental protocols and a survey of the literature up to March 1996 will help the reader to understand the salient facts and visualize a broad spectrum of ideas.

Not what I was looking for........2007-03-28
Because I was more into chemistry than physics in high school, I decided to brush up on physics and relearn the subject to help my kids in few years time. When the book arrived, I was truly disappointed. The book was almost like Physical Science class textbook which I took in 9th grade, which many of us had found it not difficult - and only requires light mathematical problem solving skills. I was rather looking for "Physics"-physics, not so "BASIC"-physics. I was looking for more mathematical problem solving guide, but, this book covers more of the basic theoretical questions and not enough of "heavy-math" involving problems which I had to deal with in my senior year physics class. And looking at the cover, well, I'll be darned, "BASIC Physics". duh... :P If only my 9th grade teacher had named the science class "Basic Physics", instead of Physical Science.
I find it very helpful.......2007-03-23
I needed to remind myself some basic physics. It does the work.
For the self disciplined.......2007-01-10
This book will help anyone who feels they do not comprehend as quickly as others it is a introduction to physics and provides a understanding what physics is. If your not sure what physics is and never took it in school this book will be helpful prior to you taking the course in college or highschool.
Physics Well Explained.......2006-11-29
Physics is well explained in this book and easily grasped with problems and tests. The only negative is the fact that some formulas are not proven.
Basic Physics: A Self-Teaching Guide.......2006-02-25
I found this book very helpful in preparing for my teacher certification test to teach high school science. It helped me recall many physical concepts that I had studied in college years ago. The book is written in language that is easy to understand. The fill-in-the-blank format helps to reinforce ideas. This is an excellent book.

Book Description
"I have laid a plan for something new, quite out of the beaten track." The result, A Sentimental Journey is as far from the conventional travel book as Tristram Shandy is from other novels. This volume includes the journal Sterne wrote for Eliza Draper which is essential reading for anyone
interested in the development of his comic and satiric genius.

As I pronounced the words great claims, he gave a slight glance with his eye downwards upon the sleeve of his tunic.-I felt the full force of the appeal.-I acknowledge it, said I-a coarse habit, and that but once in three years, with meager diet-are no great matters; and the true point of pity is, as they can be earn'd in the world with so little industry--by Laurence Sterne.

Journey of discovery.......2004-11-05
Even for modern readers, "A Sentimental Journey" (published 1768)is as startlingly innovative as Sterne's celebrated "Tristram Shandy". Sterne's ability to crystallize the minute details of experience - which may be down to a few seconds only - is reminiscent of Virginia Woolf's "To the Lighthouse". Indeed, Woolf admired this book.
This is by no means an easy read. The 18th-century prose is difficult; the book is larded with Frenchisms and Biblical or classical allusions; the complex, slow narrative often requires re-reading. But the rewards are great! It's wise, deeply comical, and incredibly perceptive.
There are several helpful reviews below dealing with the aspect of "sentimentality", and so I will just single out two things which appealed to me:
1. STERNE AND BODY LANGUAGE. Sterne shows an almost 20th-century appreciation of body language. In fact, I believe he might have been the first to identify it as such. His chapter, "The Translation", highlights the importance of being able to interpret subtle physical hints, like a language: "There is not a secret so aiding to the progress of sociality, as to get master of this _shorthand_, and be quick in rendering the several turns of looks and limbs, with all their inflections and delineations, into plain words." How visionary!
2. STERNE AND THE FRENCH. Ever since Shakespeare inserted a scene in "cod French" into _Henry V_, actually ever since the Norman Conquest and up to Monty Python and beyond, the English have revelled in mocking the French and their language. His Continental travelling gives Sterne the perfect excuse to do this. At one point he differentiates between "tant pis" (= "never mind" - where there is nothing to be gained) and "tant mieux" (= so much the better - where there IS an advantage). He also has a hilarious section on the grades of French swearing: first "Diable!", then "Peste!" and finally the words that he won't repeat. In all cases, Sterne carefully shows the social niceties of these expressions.
The protagonist, Yorick, has various adventures of lust and feeling with women and other typically travelish things like losing his passport that we can all relate to. He's tender, obscene, learned, funny, companionable, and above all, readable - if tough.
Not just for scholars.......2004-07-18
Like Sterne's other works, _A Sentimental Journey_ is extraordinarily playful. His works are the eighteenth century's postmodernist works of play. They have lots of textual puzzles and tend toward the absurd. For example, the Mr. Yorick of the _Journey_ is also a character in Sterne's major novel _Tristram Shandy_ and is also the name under which he publishes his own sermons (he was a clergyman). The text is very "fragmentary" and the novel even jokes about that itself, labelling parts of itself "fragment." In these ways, the _Journey_ is fun and modern.
But it is also indicative of an important eighteenth-century trend--sensibility or sentimentalism. All eras have their debates about the relationshp between the individual and society and this is one eighteenth-century answer. This opinion has nothing to do with "rights" but everything to do with "sympathy." Mr. Yorick, the "sentimental traveller," relates to other human beings through sympathetic physical responses, most notably the "pulses" and "beats" of his heart and hands for various women.
Therefore, this book is a good way to get into a very different historical mindset while at the same time seeing the roots of some of the literary forms of today.
Only clay-cold heads and luke-warm hearts can resist it.......2003-05-04
A Sentimental Journey is a fabulous book for so many reasons. Laurence Sterne was an immensely influential writer in the 18th century--his major works, Sentimental Journey and Tristram Shandy, were responses to the travel narrative and newly born novel, respectively. His writing is essential to scholars of the 18th century--he is referenced in Austen's Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey, Brown's The Power of Sympathy, Foster's The Coquette and Tyler's The Contrast. To understand and appreciate his novel is to have a better appreciation and love of the works that built their structures on his foundation. And yet it is original, as Yorick says himself, "both my travels and observations will be altogether of a different cast from any of my fore-runners."
Yet it is not solely for historical benefit that one should read Sentimental Journey. The adventures and amours of Sterne's semi-autobiographical Yorick are delightful. One of the most romantic passages I've read in a book occurs when Yorick inadvertantly takes the hand of a woman and describes in detail the thrill of merely holding it. Granted, hers is not the only hand he will hold, but he writes so wonderfully, candidly and engagingly that it is extremely difficult to hold his passions against the sentimental Yorick. His scene with the starling locked in a cage is pertinent and a touching commentary on slavery. What a guy! My only complaint is the editor of this edition does not feel it necessary to translate the French-of which there is plenty-making some passages difficult to understand at best. However, this is a sentimental journey that I will gladly take over and over.
Brilliant. Absolutely hillarious satire.......1998-11-17
Sterne befuddles and delights readers and critics alike in A Sentimental Journey. He takes the fashionable travel log of the time and satarizes it. Contemporary critics had a fit over its supposedly bawdy nature, yet some modern readers may over look its sublte innuendo. The form of the novel is quite unlike anything that had preceeded it, thus is important for any scholars. Most importanly, however, the book is funny and fun to read.
The amorous adventures of a gentleman in 18th century France.......1997-10-15
This autobiographical acount by Sterne of his amorous progress through France and Northern Italy is surely one of the most delightful books ever written. Composed as he lay dying of tuberculosis, the book nonetheless encaptures the author's renowned zest for life as well as the libertine spirit of the age in which he lived. The journey down through France to Northern Italy is the perfect vehicle for an excursion into the nature of human sensibility, and from the moment that this cultured Anglo-Irish cleric sets foot in Calais, the reader is treated to a seies of exquisite encounters with the fairer sex. Rarely has an author transmitted so well his understanding of the psychological complexity of women, or the pleasure he takes in their company. Engaging, perceptive and witty, this is a book whiich cannot fail to leave an imprint on the imagination.
