Book Description
Human Ecology: A Theoretical Essay, by Amos Hawley, presents for the first time a unified theory of human ecology by a scholar whose name is virtually synonymous with the discipline.
Focused on the interaction between society and environment, human ecology is an attempt to deal holistically with the phenomenon of human organization. Beginning in the first quarter of the century, sociologists such as Park, Burgess, and McKenzie developed the study of human ecology to account for the dynamics of change in American cities. Over time, theorists have reached beyond the boundaries of sociology, drawing on the findings of economics, political science, anthropology, and bioecology, to understand the relationship of human beings to their environment. Hawley has successfully integrated the scattered theses of this wide-ranging discipline into a schematic whole.
The early human ecologists seized on the analogy of plant communities as a way of understanding urban communities. Hawley here maintains that the most important contribution to human ecology of the lexicons of plant and animal ecologies is the perspective of collective life as an adaptive process consisting in an interaction of environment, population, and organization. From the adaptive profess, he argues, emerges the ecosystem, a concept that serves as a common denominator for bioecology and human ecology.
Hawley has codified the theory of human ecology by a set of deductive hypotheses that establish its claims to coherence and comprehensiveness. His model charts a synthesis of ecological concepts ranging from adaptation and equilibrium through growth in temporal and spatial dimensions to convergence and openness. The essay underscores the critical importance of transportation and communication technology to the shaping of the human ecological system.
Human Ecology brings concision and elegance to this holistic perspective and will serve as a point of reference and orientation for anyone interested in the powers and scope of the ecological approach.

Parents get mad at their teenagers all the time, right? But what if your parents got so mad that they decided to have you killed?! That's what happened to the kids in Group 6, but they don't know it yet. They think that they've been sent to Coldbrook Country School in order to get straightened out. Sure, all of them admit to having caused their parents a few problems, but they're just normal kids. They have no idea that their parents hate them enough to kill them. Group 6 is about to find out exactly what's in store for them at Coldbrook. Will they survive? Hailed as groundbreaking when first published in 1983, this novel has been rereleased in hardback for a new audience. Robert Cormier calls it, "... an extraordinary novel, by turns harrowing and hilarious, almost relentless in its suspense ..."
Book Description
Now in hardcover for the first time, a book that has been hailed as a classic: As part of their high school orientation, a group of students hikes into the woods. What they don't immediately realize is that their parents do not plan for them to come out alive.
Customer Reviews:
The Grounding Of Group Six.......2006-11-17
The book was a suspence story of a group of kids going to a school to fix all the problems in their lives, but what they didn't know is that the school excluded the group to be killed in the forest behind the school. The group consosts of five members, Coke, Sully, Sarah, Marigold, and Nat. Nat is the groups leader and counseler to the woods in the back and is the one who is hired to kill the other four kids. The setting of the book is Coldbrook Country School in the middle of a large forest where only one road leads to it and there is a forest in the back.
The author has his way of keeping on the edge of your seat, as like an author for a horror story should. In fact, he only lays out the entire evil plot after he tells of the main characters past and their lives as a child. The author also tells the reader clues on just what the children are at the school for in the first place. Here is an example: Nathan is the softy in the group with no intention of killing the kids after he gets to know them a little more. Then he decides to help the kids over come the blundeing assasins that were hired to kill the kids and Nat after he was supposed to injure them.
The down side on the author's writing is the way he doesn't keep all that interested in the book at the starting of the story, you have to be diciplined in reading to actually want to finish up the book. The author may have some good parts in there, but it's too flopped around too much. The setting wasn't played out so well in the beginning either, it's hard to follow with a story without at least a place to visualize the action happening in the story. Allow me to give this book a good, solid 7 out of 10 in my book. Even though there is a complete understanding of the characters, the setting could use a little work and the story should be a little more straight forward.
been re-reading it for 10 years.......2006-05-21
I find it very interesting that a lot of the reviews for this book have been made by adults commenting about re-reading it years after the fact and still in love with it. There's a shelf of books in my office that I have been re-reading since childhood, books that I can never let go of, that I've bought second copies of 'just in case'. This is one of them.
AWESOME.......2005-07-12
I have read this book at least 30 times. I first read it when I was 13, in 1983 and it really made me think about who I was and who I wanted to be. I last read it last week at 35 and I am now passing it along to my 13 year old son. It is a book that should be read by everyone, teens and parents alike will get a kick out of this book.
The Grounding of Group 6.......2005-07-10
This was a super book when I was a teenager. Eventhough that has been some 20 years ago, I remembered this book and title. I let a friend borrow the book back in those days and never got it back, which was a bummer. The reason I bought this book again was for my teenage step daughter to read over summer vacation and as a great book to pass down from generations.
It's a book about a group of troubled teens sent off to a new school, after pissing off their parents.
Horrible! Ground this Book!.......2005-07-08
Five teens are sent with a chaperone into the wilderness to be killed. Their parents in effect hired a hit man. The most unappealing character was Marigold with her tiresome "Moi" bit. This is a horrible story!

Book Description
A comprehensive review of Physics C curriculum topics is followed by a diagnostic test and two Advanced Placement practice exams with answers explained. An introductory section consists of a review of vectors, basic calculus concepts, and strategies for problem solving on the AP exam. Physics C topics reviewed fall under two major headings: Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism. The Mechanics section covers topics that include Newton's laws, linear momentum and collisions, and universal gravitation. The Electricity and Magnetism section covers Gauss's Law, DC circuits with resistors and batteries, magnetic fields, Ampere's Law, and much more. This brand new Barron's title makes ideal preparation of the AP Examination in Physics C.
Customer Reviews:
Tough material - But you want to pass don't you?.......2007-06-23
I bought this book with several others to supplement my daughter's physics class. I also went back and collected the openly available free-response questions and the much more limited multiple choice questions from actual prior tests. By comparison this book is indeed harder than what is needed for the actual test. However, overall this is a great book as it will prepare you for the AP Physics C test.
This book is comprehensive and deals with each topic in detail - therefore there is no problem on this point.
However, I feel that the difficulty of the problems may not make it appropriate for someone studying the topic with less than a few months to go before the AP exam. It may be better in that case to try another guide (see my other reviews - Physics C by Mooney) in order to cover more topics - albeit in less depth. However, if you start early (or have a good grasp of physics already and are in need of excellent and challenging problems) this is the way to go. If you can master this guide, you will get a great score on the exam. Keep in mind, the "trick" to physics problems is to do enough in number and quality to be able to "smell out" what the correct answer should look like and to "see" the common pitfalls and avoid them. Once you do enough, you will realize that there are only so many variations on any one particular topic that can presented in a testing format.
For those of you that start studying early, buy this book and Physics C by Mooney and get to work.
very useful but decieving.......2007-05-31
This book is very useful and helpful for the AP. It gives an in depth explanation of each problem and the relating topic. But when using this book, keep in mind that THE BOOK PROBLEMS ARE MUCH HARDER THAN THE EXAM. I felt that the problems in the book were significantly harder and more time consuming that the AP problems. So if you purchase this book (which I recommend), don't get too worked up over the difficulty, the AP is much easier. Good for practice but bad for self-confidence :) Otherwise, excellent book, can be used in college as well.
THE BEST way to prepare.......2005-10-06
This is an excellent, comprehensive manual. 746 pages of length ensures that every imaginable topic on the AP physics tests (Electricity and Magnetism, and Mechanics) is covered. Excellent organization! The test questions in this book are harder than the actual test, which makes the actual test a breeze. If you go on in physics, this book is a good primer to get you ready for harder classes and harder problems. I used this along with Feynman's lectures for studying.
The only flaw: the numerous typos. I did get a kick out of the one on p62-63 that said to "Integrage" the function. Unfortunately, the errors are with pretty rudimentary stuff, and they could have benefitted from a more comprehensive proofreading. But when you only spend $12 on this wonderful book, the typos can be overlooked, and you see an excellent comprehensive guide overall.
One of the finest book on AP Physics........2005-08-31
It has many problems you can practice with. Most of practice books don't have more than 5 practice tests, so buy several books to study more.
And you definitely have to get this book. It clearly explains the concepts and gives good descriptions for everything.
I strongly recommend this book!
Good practice - Lots of typos.......2005-01-31
How to Prepare for the AP Physics C contains a good deal of very helpful problems that are harder than the problems on the actual exam. The difficulty level of the problems makes the AP exam rather easy in comparison. However, there are typos on nearly every other page. These errors range from the benign grammar and spelling errors to the downright atrocious mathematical errors. You do need to have a pretty good grasp on physics before you use this book so the errors won't confuse you. If you don't feel you have a good grasp on the material, consider buying the Princeton Review's review book, which is for both the Physics C and Physics B.
The book is good overall and especially helpful for the Physics C student considering it is the only review book devoted specifically to the Physics C AP exam.

Book Description
The greatest works by the father of modern theater
Brilliantly exemplifying his landmark contribution to the theater, A Doll House, The Wild Duck, Hedda Gabler, and The Master Builder are truly the greatest and best known works of Henrik Ibsen.
Customer Reviews:
Compelling classics.......2006-05-19
I had to read A Doll House and the Wild Duck for one of my classes, and this was the edition recommended to us by the professor. I was so caught up in Ibsen that I went back and read Hedda Gabler and Master Builder in my spare time, and was not disappointed.
For those who are not familar with Ibsen, his plays are studies of human interaction and psychology, and this collection slants towards the tragic (meaning that it's not quite over until someone dies). There's certain patterns readers will notice, how characters lives are inter-connected by past secrets or relations they haven't been quite honest about, and how a character's unfulfilled life is linked to past actions and someone else's meddling hand. But it's all very compelling, and once you've gotten the names straight and how everyone is related to each other, you're sucked into the drama of these lives.
Of course if you don't like your modern drama depressing then this might not be for you. But any serious playwright/drama student needs to read Ibsen, and this is a fine place to start.
Engrossing!.......2001-03-01
Ibsen is one of the most important playwrights to ever grace this earth, and it is not difficult to see why after reading this collection of plays. "The Doll House" is immediately fascinating, perhaps the easiest to understand out of this group of plays. It teaches the lesson that one must learn to stand on one's own, to carry out the cliché -- "to find oneself" -- but the lesson is not learned by the main character until the stage has been skillfully set in order to make the ending all the more compelling. The strongest play is perhaps "Hedda Gabler," whose upper class heroine, Hedda, is one of the most abstract and intriguing female characters ever written for a play. Devious and suffocating in her new middle class surroundings after marrying a rather dull man, her frustrations play out and alienate the other characters. The other characters are not merely accessories; they ARE the play when one juxtaposes them with Hedda. "The Wild Duck" is not as strong a play, and the dullest of the group, but is also worth a read. Overall, the collection is a quick and engrossing read.
Hedda Gabler.......1998-02-19
Hedda gabler is a tale of a woman in the victorian ages. She was recently married to a man who considered writing a book "The Brabant in the middle ages" an exiting topic. She is torn between the role she must portray and the role she wants. The play shows the fall from grace and the decline of Hedda Gablers power. It is a powerful play and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone who read the play and wants to help me with a staging essay. amieDicaprio@yahoo.com

Good Read.......2007-03-05
This was a pretty good book. I had to read it for my Approaches to Literature class, but actually found in easy and understandable.
Ibsen is Still Relevant.......2006-02-25
It is at least 50 years since I read these plays, but I have seen them performed during these years. I suggested "A Doll's House" to my book group because I believed that, though the play was written over 100 years ago, the subject matter would still be relevant. I was right. The women were so intrigued with the material, as well as the writing, that many of them went on to read the rest of the plays in the collection. The notes relating to the plays add to the interest and are enlightening.

Book Description
At the height of his career, the great Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen created a new drama of struggle between the inward needs of his characters and the demands of their social environments. In Michael Meyer's fluent, idiomatic translations, The Wild Duck and Hedda Gabler stand as masterpieces of naturalist drama.
