Possible Dangerous Message.......2007-04-24

Lang is spending the summer living in a small caretaker's cottage with his mother on the property of retired rock and roll legend Ben Nevada. His mother has been hired to do some cooking and caretaking around the property for Nevada, and Lang will also do some odd jobs around the property as part of the deal.

Lang's mother is one of the few people who knows that he is gay and that his friend Alex, who sometimes spends weekends with them when his stage acting career allows him to get away, is really more than just a friend. Lang hasn't even told his closest friends and his former girlfriend that he is gay. This is the summer he may finally have to let his secret out.

As if Lang doesn't have enough on his mind, Ben Nevada announces that the teenage daughter of family friends in France is coming to spend part of the summer with him. She has fallen in love with a grape picker whom her family thinks is below her. They hope that if they send her to live with Nevada, she might meet and fall in love with a more suitable young man who will make her forget about this French boy. Nevada wants Lang to agree to show this girl around and introduce her to young people around town. Lang refuses, but then when the girl arrives, he finds himself spending more and more time with her. Alex is even getting jealous of the amount of time Lang spends with Huguette. And Lang is feeling more confused than ever, mainly because he can't figure out what he feels about Huguette, but he suspects it may be attraction.

I really liked the relationship between Lang and Alex; they were a pretty devoted and stable couple and they dealt with the rest of the world around them pretty well. I also liked the glimpse into the life of a former rock star--it sounded like an exciting life but also a very difficult one.

However, I didn't like the thought that it would just take the right girl to turn a gay man straight, or that if gays tried hard enough to be attracted to the opposite sex, they could be. It seemed that this is the message some people could take out of this book.

Hello, I lied was the first "gay" book I ever read (had the courage to buy?) Reading it was a very powerful experience for me, and I re-read it several times so I could get a hold of all the emotions I felt after devoring it the first time. A truly touching story with real characters who aren't perfect that never deals in black and white Hello, I lied is a wonderful book, and one that I would recomend to any teen, especially if your gay or have a friend who is recently coming out. It's a honest book probably above all else.

A Great Book for any teenager!.......1998-08-28

I have read this book three times and still I love it! Every character in this book, from Lang, who is comfortable with his homosexuality but afraid of coming out to his friends, to the bitter ex-rock star Nevada, and the french Audrey Hepburn look alike Hugette who is sent to the states from France to distance her from her grape-picker boyfriend, are so human you feel a commection to them, even if you're not gay, rich, or a tennager. Just read this book!! You will not be dissapointed!

This book really helps you understand the math problems in chemistry. It's written in plain English, and the examples are clearly shown step by step. It helped me through my homework, and saved me on the exams. I highly recommend this book.

Please don't bother. This "book" is akin to a poorly written high school term paper. The author gives no credentials and has strange views (Phlegmatic people live longer than active ones because they don't use up as much energy). Save your $19.00 and invest in a credible book. Death To Dust What Happens To Dead Bodies? by Kenneth V. Iserson, MD, is a well written informational book that delivers not only a good value, but an enjoyable, and informational reference.

someone's high school term paper?.......2004-12-02

Not worth the money! It is 106 pages, large type-face, with lots of pages taken up with chapter titles, sayings, quotes. If the extraneous stuff was removed and the type-face was at a normal size, this would be a 30 page pamphlet. It reads like someone took most things from other people's term papers. Very superficial.

Not Bad.......2004-03-05

I had worked for a funeral home at one time, many years ago. I wish this book had been available then, since there were, and still are so many questions. More often than not, it's the family of the departed who want to know what really happpens and this book would have eased a lot of the tension. Morticians seem to have a mysterious aire about them, almost as if their work is a deep, dark secret. But there is little that is secret about the emblaming and dressing process here. The author covers just about every REASONABLE question one could have about the business. Anything further could be obtained through books devoted to the actual emblaming process. You might think this is a macabre little book, but undertakers have a difficult task, to make the deceased look as good as possible.

I got the book, and read it all the way through in one evening. I thought the book was pretty good. I would of liked for it to be a little more in depth. In one of the beginning Chapters I felt left hanging when the discussion between the man in the book and his sister regarding what they had experienced at the particular time when they realized they knew something about life while still alive, that only the dying or the dead know. Unless I missed something, I never got their answer, only there brief reactions. Otherwise, I thought the book was pretty informative.

First of all this book was typed with very small type..so if your eye sight isn't what it used to be, don't bother..unless you have a magnifying glass handy.

The contents of the book left me with more questions than answers. I wish the author would of been more in depth with the procedures of embalming such as the orafices are plugged up...well, with what? Also there must be a few mistakes made in the business of death...none were mentioned. Also alittle on decomisition would of helped me to understand the dying process.

This book left me hanging in my casket!

well structured anthology.......2006-06-01

Having enjoyed some of Wilde's plays and some movie versions of his work, I looked forward to reading his words, and I was not disappointed: Wilde's wit is well known and is fully on display in this collection. What I particularly enjoyed was tracing the threads and development of ideas through both his high points and decline. Terry Eagleton is a good choice to give the introduction, and he too does not disappoint. I may not be as careful a reader as a previous reviewer as typographical errors were not obvious to me.

The selections led me to buy this volume, but the book is ridiculously full of typos. I am looking for another Wilde anthology for that reason alone.

George Villiers, Second Duke of Buckingham (1628-1687) was one of the most scandalous and controversial figures of the Restoration period. He was the principal author of The Rehearsal (1671), an enormously successful burlesque play that ridiculed John Dryden and the rhymed heroic drama.
Historians remember Buckingham as an opponent who helped topple Clarendon from power in 1667, as a member of the "Cabal" government in the early 1670s, and as an ally of the Earl of Shaftesbury in the political crisis of 1678-1683. The duke was prominent among the "court wits" (Rochester, Etherege,
Sedley, Dorset, Wycherley, and their circle); he was closely associated with such writers as Butler and Cowley; he was a conspicuous champion of religious toleration and a friend of William Penn. No edition of Buckingham has been published since 1775, partly because his work presents horrendous
attribution problems. He was (probably) adapter or co-author of six plays (two of them vastly successful for more than a century) including one in French that appears here in English for the first time. He is also associated with nine topical pieces (variously political, religious, and satiric) and
some twenty poems of wildly varying type. The "Buckingham" commonplace book has previously been published only in fragmentary form. Almost all of these works present major difficulties in both attribution and annotation, here seriously addressed for the first time. This edition is a companion
venture to Harold Love's important edition of Rochester (OUP, 1999).
