These post cards don't look so great when you tear them out. The edges become rough when pulled out of the booklet, the cardstock is weak. The color is bright, the images are clear, but the composition of the photos isn't very interesting. Wouldn't have bought it if I could have looked through them in a store.

        Book Description

In a refreshingly light and conversational style, A Case for Nuclear-Generated Electricity provides a unique context for understanding the use of energy in our society and the positive role nuclear power can play in enabling our modern civilization. We need energy to power the technology that supports human civilization. However, continued reliance on coal, oil and natural gas and hoping that green alternatives will magically save the day are by themselves unrealistic long-term solutions.

This book advocates the use of nuclear energy for producing electricity. It speaks to the average American by addressing the current cultural bias against all technology and specifically nuclear technology. It shows technology, energy, and nuclear power in an enlightening context and examines our present energy use and future options.

Heaberlin describes, for the layperson, nuclear science and power reactor engineering to demystify nuclear energy and directly address the key aspects of the public's fears regarding nuclear power and radioactive waste. He discusses the current status of nuclear power and its potential future. His key message is that it is important to allow nuclear energy to play a role in the progress of the human species.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2007-06-09

Provides an excellent discussion of the basics of nuclear fission. Then it covers the primary objections
to nuclear power - cost, accident potential, waste storage, and theft of bomb material. He makes a well
thought out case for nuclear, especially since coal is our only other major fuel with sufficient reserves to support
our growing long term need for electric power.

5 out of 5 stars Why We Need Nuclear Power NOW!.......2007-04-26

With all of the furor about Carbon Dioxide, Ethanol, Solar and Windmill Power, etc., "Nuclear Power" is seldom mentioned. Yet it is the safest and most efficient source of electrical energy. And it does NOT create significant waste and pollution, especially when compared to almost all other sources of energy. The book offers the most balanced and technically accurate assesment of Nuclear Power, and should convince even the most rabid and/or ill informed anti-Nuclear fanatic that it is the best, and probably the ONLY way to go for this century. Our future will indeed be bleak without it. Well written, interesting reading, and very important for the future of our nation and the world.

        Bud Weisbrod

3 out of 5 stars When all you have is a hammer..........2007-01-10

Well written, often well argued. But it doesn't succeed. Throughout you are hit with bias so blatant that it leaves you shaking your head. Clearly after a lifetime trying to justify this technology, he's not going to back-pedal at all.

What do you do with the radioactive waste? What do you DO with the radioactive waste? WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE RADIOACTIVE WASTE? Failed to answer, sidestepped, minimised... It ruined an otherwise interesting book.

Nuclear Power - still NOT the answer.

5 out of 5 stars All You Need to Understand Nuclear.......2006-08-20

Although the topic is highly technical, it is written in a manner that is very understandable to a newbie reader. He explains some very complicated technical aspects in a clear and simple way using very helpful illustrations. This book is a great primer on nuclear energy. Covers the topic top to bottom. Kudos to the author.

        5 out of 5 stars first rate.......2006-08-14

As is my usual habit, I feel compelled to review the book before I have completed it. However, I think I have absorbed the core of the material, having read 2/3 of it at this point.

There is much that is excellent with this book and only a little I can find fault with. Let me dispense with the latter first and then discuss the good things.

I believe the author is a bit too informal in his style. I don't think prefacing sentences with "Well, ...", or making heavy use of the word "cool" to express enthusiasm, etc., really contributes to the book.

If you look beyond that, however, I believe the author does indeed do an excellent job of writing the material in a form that is easy and engaging to read by a layman.

The material gets a bit more serious and less conversational in the chapters on nuclear physics and reactor engineering, but I think they are written with a superb balance between technical soundness but avoidance of technical abstration beyond the level appropriate for the target reader.

I am an engineer in another field; I have never had a course in nuclear physics, and the material in chapters 4-5 was virtually all new to me, and yet I feel that just from the few hours I spend reading that material I have gained a good fundamental background (for a non-specialist) in this field.

My original motivation for reading the book was the fact that I am nearing retirement and have decided to take up the study of alternative energy in retirement.

In the 1970's I was adamantly opposed to nuclear power. However, when one looks at the alternatives we have today, including such factors as global warming, clearly nuclear power deserves a higher place on the list of future energy sources than it has had in the United States in the recent past.

I think probably its main weak point is its complexity. If our society devolves to a more primitive state due to such factors as incompetent leadership, international conflict, the threat of terrorism, and failure to create a new liquid fuel source to replace fossil fuels (since electricity is not a suitable form for some of our energy needs- transportation, chemicals, etc)in time to avoid disruption to our economy and society, then being able to continue to produce nuclear power may become a "recipe that we will have lost".

Hopefully, society won't proceed in that direction, and, if so, it seems likely that nuclear fission will play a crucial role in our energy supply for at least the next several centuries.

I have a lot more study to do on energy sources before I feel I have a more complete picture, but this book has been an incredible source for me to increase my understanding of this particular piece of the puzzle.

I started reading these books in 7th grade! I fell in love with all the characters and the story lines were awesome. Have mostley all of them.(missing just a few but read all of them!) I'm a freshman in college now but I still have these books in a box on my top shelf(cant seem to be able to give them away!)I will never be able to forget these books...they were just so awesome and hopefully one day when I have a little girl I'll be able to give these to her to read. This series was just so awesome and I had a blast reading them. I reccommend these books to any girls ages 11 and up!!
(Anyways..this book in praticular sticks out in my mind the most out of all of them cuz Conner on the front page is just SO friggen GORGEOUS!!!)

omg its very clear that conner has a thing for liz, i mean he writes stone heart for her and is extra nice to her. liz likes him to. poor jess, her life is so messed up and she thinks tia told her onpurpose to go to the wrong place when lila did not tell jessica because melissa did not tell her anything. will is a jerk. conner and liz should be together.

5 out of 5 stars so cool book!.......2002-09-07

this is a great book!!! its so cool! lol. its so obvious conner and liz like eachother! i luv conner 2! hes hott!

5 out of 5 stars This book is great!.......2002-08-29

The early books in this series were the best, and this one's no exception. Conner dumps Maria which made me happy cuz I never liked them together anyways, but the way he does it is soooo cruel. Liz takes a quiz in a magazine to see just how obsessed with Conner she is - and he finds it. Jess is still being tormented by Melissa and her followers. Liz convinces her that if she shows up at the pep rally and shows everyone that she doesn't cae what they think then everything will turn around for her and people will forget about the rumors. But Jess never makes it to the pep rally because Melissa tells her the cheeleaders are meeting at her house instead of the gym.
Conner has a gig at HOJ where he sings 'Stone Heart', a song he wrote about Liz.

5 out of 5 stars Third Book in the SVHSY Series.......2002-05-15

"So Cool", the third book in the Sweet Valley High: Senior Year series, primarily revolves around Conner McDermott, the antisocial chic magnet from El Carro H.S. When he gets a gig at the House of Java (where Elizabeth Wakefield works part-time), Conner's good friend Tia Ramirez considers it her duty to help out by secretly promoting his gig, knowing full well he doesn't want all the attention, but believing it's in his best interest.

In the meantime, before his Friday night gig, Conner decides to break up with his current fling, Maria Slater, because he's starting to get irritated with her. And although Maria and Elizabeth are good friends, Elizabeth can't help but be excited that's he free again. But will she proceed with her feelings--or has she learned enough about Conner by how cruelly he broke up with Maria that all previous feelings she had for him have vanished?

And speaking of being dumped, poor Jessica Wakefield loses two of her supposed best friends (Lila Fowler and Amy Sutton) to Melissa Fox, the insecure basket case whose been spreading false rumors about Jessica ever since she found out that Jess and her boyfriend, Will Simmons, had been seeing each other behind her back. Jessica is later literally dumped on her butt during a cheerleading routine when her above mentioned ex-friends were supposed to catch her in a risky cheer. Things really don't look good for Jessica at all in this series, and her new attitude is a little too out-of-character. The Jessica from the old SVH books wouldn't have allowed Melissa to ruin her reputation this way; the old Jessica would have had a lot more backbone and told Melissa when and where to get off. So what happened?

5 out of 5 stars Wisdom Beyond Years.......2003-03-28

Adults everywhere should have the wisdom Jason Summey displayed as a young teenager. High school dropouts are a terrible problem for society in general, but the perspective this young man presents in his little book is the unique view of a peer who sees and hears, first hand, the problems and difficulties that cause young people to make such a destructive decision. The way he describes the difficulties he encountered while trying to help is classmates is well worth the read. His compilation of reasons to stay in school that other students submitted, range from funny to serious to sad to just plain common sense. The value of this little book is evident by the fact that it is endorsed by everyone from Jason's principal, to his school superintendent, his congressman, the governor of his state and even President George Bush, Sr. It's a must read for anyone interested in education.

5 out of 5 stars Great for all kids.......1999-08-14

Knowing Jason Summey personally, i can tell you he is a great guy with a true passion for his work. I heard him give a speech on his program with his school and he is a truly amazing person. This book is the proof that there really is a spectacular reason to stay in school. Jason Summey has saved multiple pepole's careers, and this book is the proof. Thank you Jason Summey, you've helped me.

                      Book Description

Antisense technology is the ability to manipulate gene expression within mammalian cells providing powerful experimental approaches for the study of gene function and gene regulation. For example, methods that inhibit gene expression permit studies which probe the normal function of a specific product within a cell. Such methodology can be used in many disciplines such as pharmacology, oncology, genetics, cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and neurosciences. This volume will be a truly important tool in biomedical-oriented research.
The critically acclaimed laboratory standard for more than forty years, Methods in Enzymology is one of the most highly respected publications in the field of biochemistry. Since 1955, each volume has been eagerly awaited, frequently consulted, and praised by researchers and reviewers alike. Now with more than 300 volumes (all of them still in print), the series contains much material still relevant today--truly an essential publication for researchers in all fields of life sciences.

                                          5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2000-06-18

As a result of having had this textbook, courses (as opposed to McMurry and other *wimpy* textbooks), I learned Organic better than many of my colleagues. This book is outstanding, to say the least. The authors show mechanisms clearly and discuss synthesis in a way that gets you thinking like an organic chemist. This textbook sorta changed my life; it taught me how to think like a scientist. Definitely *THE* book for undergrad Organic courses, and an excellent reference book that should remain in the lab at all times.
