              A living nightmare . . .

Elizabeth Wakefield never imagined that her  evening of volunteer work at Sweet Valley's  hospital would turn into the most horrifying night of her  life. But when a strong hand clamps a  chloroformed rag over her mouth and she is pulled from her  car, Elizabeth's hellish ordeal  begins.

When she regains consciousness, Elizabeth  finds herself tied to a chair in an isolated shack.  She has been kidnapped by Carl, a lonely and  disturbed orderly from the hospital. Elizabeth doesn't  know what Carl wants from her, but it's clear he's  on the brink of insanity. Somehow Elizabeth must  escape before it's too late!

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The first REAL SVH Thiller.......2006-12-26

A classic storyline with the most memorable characters involved. SVH #13, "Kidnapped!" has composed within it substance, thrills, and drama--all of the key elements necessary to make this into one of the most desired and most-renowned SVH book in the series!

Of course the abduction occurs in the previous book, SVH #12, "When Love Dies," Elizabeth Wakefield encounters a terrifying reality when Carl, an orderly from the hospital, whom she is bearly acquanted with, holds her prisoner in his isolated shack. The drama unfolds as Elizabeth tries to understand from this man why she has been taken and what his purpose with her really is: what does he want from her? What is he planning on doing to her once he gets what he wants? Elizabeth is filled with anger, pity, but most of all fear. In talking with Carl, it's understood that he has no intention of letting her go and that it is up to her to find a way to get away from him before it is too late.

The setup of the book was amazing. The "chapter shift" from Elizabeth to Jessica was a great buildup and added great suspense for the reader. A truly novel concept, one that allows the reader to follow along with the storyline and hang in there for the climax of the story.

A couple of noted flaws to point out: 1.) Of course it is ridiculous to believe that the police would automatically give up their initial search of a minor so easily as after a day or two. Elizabeth running away? Come on! It doesn't fit her character, and any detective, who did victimology on the victim, in this case, "sensitive, down-to-earth" Elizabeth Wakefield would never fit the profile of a classic runaway. 2.) Having the people closest to Elizabeth find her in her third day of captivity? Wow. We need detectives like that were I live.

Other than that, a true classic that any SV fan would appreciate. 5 stars regardless of criticism.

3 out of 5 stars Whitewashed and walled away.......2006-06-11

Loneliness and mental illness are themes that have been explored at length by Kate Williams and Francine Pascal, author and creator, respectively, of the Sweet Valley High series in various books, yet perhaps no other story so successfully blends these issues with elements of the thriller, set within the still more conventional traditions of the romance, as Kidnapped! book number 13 - the story of Elizabeth Wakefield's terrifying ordeal at the hands of a lonely and mentally deranged man named Carl. When she is kidnapped, readers are thrown into as much turmoil as what Jessica, Elizabeth's twin, and Todd Wilkins, Elizabeth's boyfriend, suffer when they learn of her plight. Who is Carl, and what does he want with Elizabeth? Moreover, how could something this dangerous have happened to Elizabeth and in a place like Sweet Valley of all places? Readers who have grown used to teenage drama played out within the confines of safe, sheltered suburbia, will be irrepressibly moved to ask these questions as they journey in the dark with Elizabeth in her first few conscious moments immediately after her abduction. The danger inherent in Elizabeth's situation is, of course, Carl.

Very few of the core characters in this series have deliberately been created to be pathological and dangerous: even the antics of the worst of the bullies (for example, Bruce Patman or Lila Fowler, even Jessica herself) are never allowed to cross the boundary separating petty, immature vindictiveness from absolute psychosis. True threat always comes from the genuine outsiders and misfits of Sweet Valley - displaced characters who, though burdened with an impenetrable past, have no future in the series and no real ties to any member of the core cast. In this context, Carl becomes the perfect villain: disturbed, unpredictable and unstable.

Ironically, it is his childish understanding of what constitutes friendship and companionship that renders Carl one of the more dangerous characters readers will ever encounter in this series. He simply does not understand, or sympathise with, Elizabeth's terror, and why she cannot be happy being with him in a small shack, tied to a chair. Unlike the character of Jack, in Showdown, book 19, Carl's deranged thinking isn't because of drugs: he is genuinely mentally ill. His compassion for Elizabeth's discomfort or hunger is very much mitigated by his fierce anger at her attempts to escape, and readers are always lead away from sympathising too much with Carl's loneliness when we consider how distraught Elizabeth, Jessica and Todd are throughout the entire ordeal.

Twins playing at being twins is a game with which readers of this series are familiar, but in this story, it is a ploy that becomes the door into freedom for Elizabeth. Carl's fate, more unhappily, is the opposite: yet how else a conventional thriller/romance accommodates such a character is a consideration that escapes both the author and the reader. Carl's mental illness never appears resolved, nor his loneliness. And we are left to wonder exactly what kind of place is Sweet Valley after all?

                    Book Description

This is an introduction to statistical mechanics, intended to be used either in an undergraduate physical chemistry course or by beginning graduate students with little undergraduate background in the subject. It assumes familiarity with thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, the kinetic theory of gases, quantum mechanics and spectroscopy, at the level at which these subjects are normally treated in undergraduate physical chemistry. Highly illustrated with numerous exercises and worked solutions, it provides a concise, up-to-date treatise of statistical mechanics and is ideally suited to use in one semester courses.

                    Download Description

Statistical mechanics is the theoretical apparatus used to study the properties of macroscopic systems - systems made up of many atoms or molecules - and relates those properties to the system's microscopic constitution. This book is an introduction to statistical mechanics, intended to be used either by advanced undergraduates or by beginning graduate students. The first chapter deals with statistical thermodynamics and aims to quickly derive the most commonly used formulas in the subject. The remainder of the book then illustrates the application of these formulas in traditional areas such as the ideal gas and less traditional areas such as the quantum ideal gas. Highly illustrated with numerous exercises and worked solutions, it provides a concise, up-to-date treatise of statistical mechanics ideal for use on an 8-12 lecture course.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction.......2006-09-01

While looking for a suitable textbook for a one-semester course on Statistical Mechanics, I found this little gem by Prof. Widom, a recognized authority in the field. It was a pleasure to read, clear, all the classical topics well explained, very understandable.
Several excellent textbook on the subject are available, but none conveys so much in so little space (THE SPACE you have available in an undergraduate lecture course), yet with no compromise on rigour or clarity. At the beginning, I was a little uneasy by the choice of skipping a discussion of the (difficult) foundations, jumping directly to the Boltzmann distribution as a starting point. Now I totally agree with it, it is the best for a first introduction, and if time is left (rarely) one can profitably add a discussion on fundations at the end of the course.

3 out of 5 stars Woodrow Wilson Lite.......2007-03-29

I am reading all the presidential biographies in order and just finished this book.

Overall, I thought it was just "okay." I like my books to be in chronological order. This book was organized loosely chonological, but by topic. It made following the chain of events rather difficult. Also, the auther wrote the dates like this: 29 March 1917. Rather than March 19. That was a stumbling block and a distraction.

This read more like a textbook than a biography, which made it rather flat and dull. He devoted page upon page to the intracacies of war finance, but breezed over and barely mentioned the death of his wife and his debilitating series of strokes in the twilight of his administration.

If I can identify with the subject of a biography and feel as if I KNOW the subject, I can say "this is a great book." And, as corny as it may sound, I feel sad at the end when the president dies. In this book, there could have been several instances where I could have "felt" the book -- when his first wife dies, when he dies, etc. I didn't feel that at any point in the book, which means I didn't get close to Wilson.

If you are reading all the presidential bios like I am, this is a good book to get a general idea of what Wilson was like so you can move onto Warren G Harding. You'll probably need to go back and read the multi-volme bios available on Wilson to really FEEL him or to undertsand the complexities of the events leading up to and including WWI.

3 out of 5 stars Slow Paced and a Bit Disjointed.......2003-03-21

The writing in this book is good, but in places it jumps around in time. It is also slow paced and not light reading. However, it covers Woodrow's life pretty well for a one-book volume.

5 out of 5 stars Mister, we could use a man like Woody again!.......2003-02-13

"God helping her...she can do no other!"

Unlike our current prez, Wilson was no war monger. He earnestly sought peace even as he committed our boys to the 20th centuries first horrific war. This is his story and I highly recommend it.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Don't Forget Woodrow Wilson.......2002-07-22

Kendrick A. Clements "Woodrow Wilson" delivers what it promises -an excellent introductory study of our 28th president - in just 223 pages of text. Some readers may want more intimate details about Wilson and the people in his life; for them there are 11 additional pages of pertinent bibliographical information. Clement's brief book, nevertheless - billed as the 'best available one-volume biography' on Wilson - provides the reader with that essential information that prompts many historians to rank Wilson in the top tier of U.S. presidents. We learn, for example, that Wilson (our only Ph.D. president) was one of just a handful of our truly intellectual presidents - i.e., he loved books and ideas and was a voracious reader of books and a prolific writer of books. He was the son of a Presbyterian minister who'd instilled in him a love of his fellow man and a desire to serve his fellow man. Wilson - like Theodore Roosevelt before him - came to believe that the federal government is an organ that must be involved in helping those unable to help themselves. As president he pushed through legislation that protected workers, women, and children from abuse and exploitaton in the workplace. He believed in the capitalist system and in the prerequisite free market conditions; consequently, he fought against any practices employed by business or industry designed to create monopolies or restrict free competition. As president he felt obligated to be deeply involved in both legislative and executive branch activities - in order to better realize his domestic and foreign affairs goals. Wilson was a decent man with a wide range of significant accomplishments: after acquiring his Ph.D. (political science) at Johns Hopkins University, he distinguished himself in a number of capacities - as a college/university professor, university president (Princeton), governor (New Jersey) and U.S. president (2 terms). While he was in office women got the vote, the Federal Reserve Bank was established, the mechanism for funding government activities was changed (the graduated income tax was adopted to suplement less effective tariff and excise tax revenues). When U.S. entry into World War I became unavoidable, Wilson vowed that the war should end with something positive - namely, with a non-punitive peace (provided for in his '14 Point Plan' for peace)and with the creation of an organization that could prevent world wars in the future (he proposed the League of Nations). Because U.S. congressional opposition was more powerful Wilson failed to achieve these goals - but he did win a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. Nevertheless, Wilson was correct in warning the world that a punitive peace would cause serious trouble in the future (aka Adolph Hitler), and he was correct in predicting that the world would eventually be forced to create a collective organization of nations (aka the United Nations) to resolve international disputes and to punish nations who violate international law. We now see that Wilson was also important as the transitional president who helped the United States abandon its 19th Century isolationist positions - and he did his best to push the country into the modern era (20th Century) when it would eventually accept and assume its duties and responsibilities as a leader among nations.

5 out of 5 stars Wilson the peacemaker.......2001-07-31

Woodrow Wilson. Here was a president who put himself in the middle of European power politics in order to achieve the goals he had in mind. This book helps to suggest a man of action and persuasion at a time when most Americans were fed up with affairs that didn't concern them. Woodrow Wilson is regarded with respect, but at the time he was proposig the League of Nations as the answer to the world's problems, he was criticized left and right. We now know that his policies for peace and security were right, and if Wilson was president today, we could be made certain that the world would be at peace. This book, which was written in such a way as to paint a picture of a daring, courageous president, is by far one of the better books on Wilson that I have ever read. I would recommend this account of our 28th president to both the serious student of American Presidential History, and also to the laymen reader. Book Description

This book is what the title says. It is the distillation of what the Pardeys have learned in 150,000 miles of sailing on board their two cutters, Seraffyn and Taleisin and on scores of other boats they have delivered or raced. Lin and Larry tell how they have sailed in comfort and safety without large cash outlays on a pay-as-you-earn-as-you-go plan and by simplifying.

A sailor who relies on expensive equipment - radios, radar, safety harnesses, emergency flares, or liferaft - is risking disaster. A sailors reliance must be on self first and on electronics and mechanics last. For example, do not count on your safety harness to keep you attached to the boat. Do, however, learn the how, why, and what of not falling overboard in the first place. Know the proper layout and gear that will eliminate the need to take risks in any weather.

How to learn basic sailing and seamanship, to choose a boat and equipment designed for safe, comfortable voyaging: how to learn m! aintenance and repair, inspection of rigging and equipment, sailing without an engine - these are what the Pardeys teach.

This is an essential book for coastal and offshore sailors alike.

In its first edition, this invaluable text has seen nine reprints. Now Lin and Larry have updated and revised the information to make it current and a valuable addition to any sailors library right up to the millennium.

It is common in the Pardey line of book for chapters to be repeated. I would like to see a new book from the Pardey's that is up to date with new material throughout. Still a great book for easy reading and many tips.

It's wonderful to keep this dream alive for those of us with moderate means. I'd recommend this book, along with FitzGerald's Sea-steading, as basic reference volumes for simple sailing.

I read this book fifteen years ago, then bought the new edition because someone borrowed my old one. Yup, as the previous reviewer said, the Pardyes have only updated this edition, adding maybe 30 percent new info. But their message is as modern as today. Only by knowing how to get along without al the fancy gadgets can you be have a chance to feel completely in charge of your cruising life. You may never need to get along without your engine, or without your electronics, but if they do fail you will not feel stuck,if you think through what they say. By the way, I happened to go to their website and am amazed at the wonderful life they have made for themselves, a small but grand cruising boat and a boatyard and home in New Zealand that makes a perfect safe haven that I would love to have for my later years.

This book is so old it should not be sold anymore. The so called "updates" are simply token and the whole book is too old to be of help. Also, the people are so spartan they really don,t relate to the modern cruiser..ie.. they spend time on the merits of kerosene lights. When they finally retire to land I sure they will end up in a trailer park.

                                          Book Description

What really went wrong in Zimbabwe? The promise of liberation, human rights, democracy, development, and prosperity have been shattered by greed, state-sponsored violence, and tyranny. Yet the discourse on Zimbabwe has been polarized along racial and political lines. There is need for a critical analysis of Zimbabwe beyond these polarizations.

Horace Campbell looks at Zimbabwe's problems today, including the recent state and ruling party violence against citizens as manifestations of and deriving directly from the masochist, militaristic, and gender-biased conception of liberation which is deeply imbedded in the post-independent state. In his exploration and analysis of Zimbabwe's experiences, from the transition to independence, to the crisis ravaging the country today, Campbell places issues like Zimbabwe's involvement in the Congo, executive lawlessness, the land crisis, homophobia, and the politics of intolerance into perspective.

Chapters like "Soldiers in Business," "The Siege of Ikeka," and "The Limits of Military Intervention" provide fresh information on some of the motives behind the military intervention in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the futility of the presence of the Zimbabwean army in the Congo.

Campbell also argues that the politics of emancipation, militarism, and patriarchy are exhausted models of liberation and suggests new models of liberation for economic prosperity, human rights, political tolerance, non-discrimination, peace, and stability.

While this book is a serious and critical analysis of the Zimbabwean situation, it is also a very informative and general read.

                                          Book Description

Amid the policy gridlock that characterizes most environmental debates, a new conservation movement has emerged. Known as "collaborative conservation," it emphasizes local participation, sustainability, and inclusion of the disempowered, and focuses on voluntary compliance and consent rather than legal and regulatory enforcement. Encompassing a wide range of local partnerships and initiatives, it is changing the face of resource management throughout the western United States.

Across the Great Divide presents a thoughtful exploration of this new movement, bringing together writing, reporting, and analysis of collaborative conservation from those directly involved in developing and implementing the approach. Contributors examine:

                                          .

In addition, the book offers in-depth stories of eight noteworthy collaborative initiatives-including the Quincy Library Group, Montana's Clark Fork River, the Applegate Partnership, and the Malpai Borderlands-that explore how different groups have organized and acted to implement their goals.

Among the contributors are Ed Marston, George Cameron Coggins, David Getches, Andy Stahl, Maria Varela, Luther Propst, Shirley Solomon, William Riebsame, Cassandra Moseley, Lynn Jungwirth, and others. Across the Great Divide is an important work for anyone involved with collaborative conservation or the larger environmental movement, and for all those who care about the future of resource management in the West.

This book showcases how people can work to come to collaborative agreements over natural resource issues - if they get tired enough of fighting. Set in the West over the battle for water, stakeholders ended lawsuits and tried to reach win-win situations on their own. They succeeded in several instances, no small miracle. A great book of interest for those interested in collaborative decision making and natural resource conflict.
