Customer Reviews:
Fascinating mix of adventure, introspection & enlightenment........1999-11-17
I am a long time admirer of Tim Cahill's work and picked up "Out of the Noosphere" on that basis. I was delighted to find so many other authors equally as adventurous and thoughtful. Anyone who loves travelling for the pure joy of meeting different people, seeing new vistas, and having his/her world view challenged will love this book. The writing is superb, each story/article is a good length for commuter readers. I particularly like the way each author brings you personally into the action...you have to think about what you would do in a similar situation. And the situations are mind expanding -- from killer bee research, to losing friends in mountain climbing accidents. I couldn't recommend it more highly!
Get into the noosphere of reality........1999-06-13
"Withdraw to your cell," the Desert Fathers used to say, "and your cell will teach you everything" - at least all you need to know for the fullness of life. So said Thomas Merton in his "Notes for a Philosophy of Solitude."
"Get out and about," say the editors of Outside magazine - away from the mind- and soul-destroying homogenization of urban living.
In these 40 stories - 2 by women - we have diversity in unity, enhancing the value of the anthology. The integrating principle is not so much a style of writing - a certain outdoors "Outside" style - as an attitude of gifted adventurers who report not only from interesting places and events "out there" but especially from the deeper depths of their own reflective beings.
"Get out of the noosphere," said author David Quammen. His comment provided the title for the collection. But he misinterpreted what Jesuit evolutionist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin had in mind when he invented the "Noosphere" as a word and a concept in 1922.
For Teilhard was undoubtedly an outdoors "Outside" person and rejoiced in the creative convergence of human beings in all their diversity. "Union differentiates" was his constant theme, so well exemplified in these reports from writers likewise familiar with "the wild country of the soul" (p.12).
With its foundations anchored to the genetic core of each participating member,Teilhard's noosphere enables us to communicate around the world and beyond at the speed of light - mind-to-mind, heart-to-heart and even soul-to-soul - providing a lifeline of care, concern and mutual respect to all who live not by bread alone, but dare to explore the farthest reaches of reality.

Book Description
Flip doesn't think shell ever fit in at the Swiss boarding school. Besides being homesick for her father and Connecticut, she isn't sophisticated like the other girls, and discussions about boys leave her tongue-tied. Her happiest times are spent apart from the others, sketching or wandering in the mountains.
But the day she's out walking alone and meets a French boy, Paul, things change for Flip. As their relationship grows, so does her self-confidence. Despite her newfound happiness, there are times when Paul seems a stranger to her. And since dating is forbidden except to seniors, their romance must remain a secret. With so many new feelings and obstacles to overcome in her present, can Flip help Paul to confront his troubled past and find a future?
Customer Reviews:
A Heartfelt Look At First Love.......2003-11-08
When young Philippa (Flip) is forced to leave her father, and her home in Connecticut, and begin attending a Swiss boarding school, she couldn't be more heartbroken. She knows instantly that she isn't like the other girls at school. She isn't sophisticated, or knowledgeable about boys. In fact, even the thought of boys leaves her tongue tied. The only time Flip really feels good, is when she's by herself, wandering in the mountains, or sketching. But when she meets a French boy named Paul during one of her walks, everything changes. As their friendship (and relationship) grows, Flip's self-confidence grows with it. If only they didn't have to hide their romance. After all, only seniors were allowed to date, so Flip and Paul's romance is forbidden. With new obstacles being faced everyday, Flip now has to help Paul confront his past, if she hopes to one day have a future with him.
L'Engle has done it again. AND BOTH WERE YOUNG is an amazing book written with characters who are poised, confident, intelligent, exciting, and intriguing. Flip is a female character who any teenage girl can relate to. What with her spunky, and spirited personality. Paul is the guy whom every girl will fall in love with, and feel sorry for, as they continue reading. This is a must-have book for all L'Engle fans. Especially those who loved CAMILLA.

An engrossing and touching read........2003-08-04
I started AND BOTH WERE YOUNG because I knew it was about a girl who leaves for school. Since I am about to leave as well(except for college) I thought it would be an interesting read. I was not disappointed.
Flip and Paul are beautiful characters, full of doubts and pain. However, in each other they find answers to their doubts and a balm for their pain. Watching their relationship unfold is sweet in every way first loves should be.
L'Engle's writing is beautiful and captivating. My mind had little room to wonder. Although the book is classified as young adult, I feel like any age will find it as a great read that can transport them out of their surroundings into the snow-covered country of Switzerland.

A Short and Sweet Novel.......2003-03-03
Phillippa (Flip) Hunter has to go to boarding school in Switzerland. It's not as if she wants to, she's being forced to go because her father will be away on trips in China all year with the awful Eunice (who consequently is not that awful.)Flip believes that Eunice is trying to replace her mother, who died the previous year in a car crash, and as such completely dislikes her. Since Flip is being sent to boarding school without her own consent, it is quite normal that she despises it. She never knows how to reply to the girls, she can barely participate in gym due to her stiff knee, and some of the girls find her quite strange. One thing that consoles her is a French boy named Paul who has seemed to have an awful past that he can't remember. (Paul was in concentration camps when he was younger; the book takes place a few years after World War 2.) Flip helps Paul overcome his past, and learn to live in the present. Another person who really helped Flip in the beginning of the book was Madame Perceval, the art teacher. Madame Perceval was quite understanding of Flip. Flip was an excelling student in art, and as such she was planning to become an artist like her father. Throughout the book, Flip grew and matured while helping everyone around her, and realized that she didn't need somebody else to instill faith into her, as she could find it on her own.
The Best!.......2003-02-20
I love this book. I can relate to Flip with her insecurity and her adjustment to her new life in the boarding school. It's about the girl, Flip, who misses her father in the boarding school while he is away on a trip to China with his loathed girlfriend. Flip knows she doesn't fit in, and then she meets the boy named Paul, who doesn't remember anything about his past. With many more obstacles on the way, Flip later realizes that she can still be herself no matter what happens.

Book Description
What are the benefits that animals gain from living in a social group? This question has been the primary focus of the author's ecological interest. After many years of original and innovative research on the African buffalo, particularly at Lake Manyara in northern Tanzania, Herbert Prins has now summarized the results of much of this widely-respected work in this fascinating book. While advantages in reduction of the risks of predation or in increased efficiency of foraging on certain types of resources are now widely recognized, until now there has been less attention paid to the idea of the animals themselves as `information centres' and the extent to which the individual may be able to make use of information gathered by conspecifics, adjusting its own behaviour in response. Such a case-study has wide implications for research on social structure and organization in other species, and these are explored within the book. However, it is not a book aimed simply at the academic researcher, zoologist and behavioural ecologist; since it is written in a readable and accessible style, the book will also be enjoyed by wildlife enthusiasts, interested naturalists, wildlife biologists and wildlife managers.

Theoretical characterization of McReynolds' constants [An article from: Analytica Chimica Acta]

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Analytica Chimica Acta, published by Elsevier in . The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
The properties of McReynolds' constants were studied by a detailed statistical/chemometric analysis. The electronic structure, geometries and hydrophobicity of the McReynolds' test compounds (benzene, 1-butanol, 2-pentanone, 1-nitropropane, pyridine, 2-methyl-2-pentanol, 1-iodobutane, 2-octyne, 1,4-dioxane and cis-hidrindane) were calculated at the level of PM3 semiempirical quantum chemical method and empirical formulas. The predominant pattern was revealed using cluster and principal component analyses (CA and PCA). Dependence of McReynolds' constants on the calculated chemical descriptors was modeled by multiple linear regression (MLR) with stepwise selections, principal component regression (PCR) and partial least-square regression (PLSR). A novel statistical approach was developed for case-and-variable selection using the PCR and PLSR methods for characterizing and modeling the polarity of 25 gas chromatography (GC) stationary phases (phthalates, adipates, sebacates, phosphates, citrates and nitrils). Highest occupied molecular orbital energy, dipole moment, averaged isotropic polarizability and the apolar solvent accessible surface area; and energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and total solvent accessible surface area were suitable to describe the McReynolds' constants based on the results obtained using Q^2 and adjusted-Q^2. Six of the 10 test compounds were found to be sufficient for the description of the polarity of the columns studied.

Book Description
Nearly fifty years after his death, Albert Einstein remains one of America's foremost cultural icons. A thicket of materials, ranging from scholarly to popular, have been written, compiled, produced, and published about his life and his teachings. Among the ocean of Einsteiniascientific monographs, biographies, anthologies, bibliographies, calendars, postcards, posters, and Hollywood filmshowever, there is a peculiar void when it comes to the connection that the brilliant scientist had with the African American community. Virtually nowhere is there any mention of his relationship with Paul Robeson, despite Einstein's close friendship with him, or W.E.B. Du Bois, despite Einstein's support for him.
This unique book is the first to bring together a wealth of writings by Einstein on the topic of race. Although his activism in this area is less well known than his efforts on behalf of international peace and scientific cooperation, he spoke out vigorously against racism both in the United States and around the world.
Combining the scientist's letters, speeches, and articles with an engaging narrative that places his public statements in the context of his life and times, this important collection not only brings attention to Einstein's antiracist public activities, but also provides insight into antiracist struggles in America.

Common Ground...Einstein on Race & Racism.......2005-10-09
This book is a timely, fascinating and important read about the common ground between Albert Einstein and members of the African American community of Princeton, NJ in the 40's. This book should be a requirement in every public library and recommended reading in many college & high school history curriculums. The example of fearlessness of Einstein, Robeson, DuBois and others in their activism against racism in America and abroad is one that needs to be emulated in today's society... if change is to come. The authors, Jerome and Taylor have produced and excellent literary work.
Einstiein on Race and Racism.......2005-10-05
This book presents a revealing, fascinating and compelling side of Albert Einstein relative to the Black community. The story is totally unknown and undocumented anywhere else. It provides an example of how racism is treated in our society. Denial of the existence of racism and overlooking the impact of the problem will never lead to a appropriate way to address, and certainly not solve the reprecussions suffered because of racism. It is an impotant work that should awaken a sleeping society.
Very Interesting Book.......2005-10-02
I never would have thought of the genius Albert Einstein to be concerned about race, but apparently he was, as Jerome and Taylor have carefully documented. I'm glad to know that the great cultural icon, Einstein, was more than a mathematician and physicist, he was a concerned citizen of the world. Perhaps we all can examine ourselves closer as we explore our views on race and racism in our society today. This book could be an excellent teaching tool for an honors or AP course in history for high school students, or for a political science course in college.
Good and insightful information.

Simply beautiful.......2007-06-26
I have just finished reading this book, and probably should not be attempting to write a review because words fail to describe how wonderful this book is. It is the most beautiful book I have ever read. It is written in Hesse's gentle, quiet style, and consists of metaphorical meditations on wandering. The imagery is graceful while the implications resound deep within one. Each sketch moved me deeply. This is Hesse at his best, a spiritual explorer, free of dogma, immersing himself and the reader in simple yet fascinating reflections. I plan on reading this book frequently, savoring each image and feeling the serenity created by Hesse's prose. I would urge everyone to read this book.
Wandering.......2003-07-29
I 'wandered' upon the first edition of this book at a yard sale, and once having begun it, was thrilled with every word and every turn of phrase. Hesse, in this lesser-known work, writes with beautiful symplicity and grace. Each short prose piece is accompanied by charming sketches, and each ends with one of Hesse's poems. Here Hesse reveals his deepest fears, hopes, and insights; which once read, will bring any wandering soul closer to enlightenment. Highly recommended!
wandering - hermann hesse.......2001-11-18
The most wonderful, beautiful book, it has been my absolute favourite for the past 30 years, always makes me feel like I'm home again, in the company of all feelings and emotions that make me feel warm and connected to the earth.
The Heart of the Wanderer.......2000-04-06
I thought this book essentially epitomized Hesse's search for meaning, but the narrative was simply told in a series of sharp images, ones in which he himself found inspiration. In contrast to his many, more famous novels, I believe Hesse writes in absolute honesty, no longer confined to the restrictions of a classic novel, and the images and sensations he reproduces are stunning.
