Book Description
When Hilly’s grandmother becomes ill with Alzheimer’s disease, her family is turned upside down by revelations from her life during World War II.
Hilly’s German grandmother, HeidiGran, comes to live with her family after she gets Alzheimer’s disease. As her mind becomes more muddled, secrets buried in her past start to emerge. Why does HeidiGran keep talking about a girl named Rachel? And why does she make racist remarks about Hilly’s friend, Ruben? As Hilly struggles to cope with revelations about her family’s past, she encounters racism and prejudice for herself when a friend becomes the victim of a mindless attack.
This evocative and deftly told novel explores prejudice and its effects on multiple generations in one family.

Sisterland .......2006-06-15
I thought I would like this book. I was obviously wrong, because I was so bored I couldn't even read any more after I got past like, page 50. And that's saying something, because every time I pick up a book I just HAVE to finish it. But this was the one time I honestly couldn't read it.
The reason I gave it two stars was because it might be a good book, but I just couldn't take the time to finish it.
Great book.......2006-01-02
i enjoyed this book it taught me about the holocaust through a young girl's perspective and it had a lot in common with another book I have read about the holocaust.
long, but worth every page.......2004-05-19
As SISTERLAND opens, Hilly poses a question: Is it better to know the truth, no matter how unpleasant, behind surface niceness or not? Her question is prompted partly by her recent visit to a concentration camp in France --- an experience that troubles her more than she ever expected. During the trip, Hilly's sister Zoe points out that their grandmother was German and that she makes frequent racist comments. Zoe even goes so far as to offhandedly call HeidiGran a Nazi, a charge her family instantly and thoroughly denies.
Hilly and Zoe argue constantly as they prepare for their grandmother to move in with their family. HeidiGran, suffering from Alzheimer's disease, experiences confused periods interposed with more lucid ones. She can no longer distinguish which of her memories are secrets that she's guarded from everyone her entire life. The truth is at odds with what her family has always believed. One by one, she begins to share enticing bits of these dangerous revelations with her shocked granddaughters. However, when questioned further, HeidiGran retreats into confusion.
Hilly feels compelled to uncover the truth about her grandmother's past before HeidiGran's memory is entirely erased by her disease. In the meantime, she worries about and is angered by Zoe's new friends, one of whom wears a swastika. Did Zoe's friends attack Hilly's Palestinian friend, injured in a racist attack? Hilly's concerns about racism are even closer to her heart as she begins to fall in love for the first time with her friend's brother.
Along the way, SISTERLAND tells the story of HeidiGran's childhood through flashbacks interwoven into Hilly's story. While the reader is soon clued in on HeidiGran's heartbreaking secret, there's a whopper of a surprise yet in store before the tale is done.
This is a long book, but the pace never lags. I found myself completely absorbed by Hilly's search for, and her family's transformation by, HeidiGran's truth. I highly recommend SISTERLAND for anyone who enjoys an amazingly good read crammed full of family relationships, romance, history, mystery and sympathetic characters.

Good book for people taking a class requiring it the book. It is a little hard to understand why certain problems are done the way they are. Overall a good book to help you solve problems and determine whether you had the right thought process.

Within the 11 seconds that inspired this memoir, Travis Roy realized his dream, then smashed into his nightmare. Aided by the sure touch of Sports Illustrated hockey writer E.M. Swift, Roy's moving account of his accident and his rehabilitation--confined to a wheelchair, he's gotten some use of his right arm back--avoids the maudlin. Instead, Eleven Seconds is filled with grit, hope, humor, and a thoughtful young man's introspection on the meaning of sports and the adjustments that follow when the ability to play them is taken away.

A fantastic book!.......2007-09-23
I read this book in two days! Travis Roy is an incredible person who has lived through a tragic experience. I applaud him for setting up a foundation to help other people with spinal cord injuries. As a teacher, I would love to have him speak at my school!
Good Read.......2006-12-07
Initially I was drawn to this book because it involved my passion, hockey. But Travis' story moved me deeply. Once I started reading this book I could not put it down. I was really interested in the affect his accident would have on his relationship with his girlfriend and I was rooting for them to stay together. I'll be honest I'm pretty bummed things didn't work out between them. But this was a great story of a very inspirational person. It truly made me want to make a contribution to his foundation which I plan on doing. I would recommend this book to anyone not just fans of hockey. Good Luck in the future Trav!
Eleven Seconds review.......2006-06-01
In Eleven Seconds, a story about a young man at the age of twenty-one living life and one event happens to change it all. Playing in his first collegiate game of hockey, Travis Roy crashed the corner after a dump in, tripped, fell, and broke his fourth vertebrae and becomes paralyzed from his neck down. This single event changes the way he and his family act towards each other. The story goes through his amazing recovery and the heart and determination he had. The author portrays Travis Roy as a hero to those that are in deep pain or trouble. He accomplishes this by showing the good and bad times in his recovery stages. After a few months at the hospital, Travis Roy wants to get back into the world and show that this freak accident will not keep him down. He returns to college and tries to become a normal student, but this is impossible because he has become a well-known person due to the accident. The grit and determination of Mr. Roy and his family members through the hard times to get to a level of peace and acceptance of what has happend is amazing. This story makes you, the reader, feel that you just need to make the best of the hand that is dealt and that if anything goes wrong you just have to deal with it and make the best of the situation. Eleven Seconds is a great book and should be read by all.
Reading this brought that night back.......2006-04-22
On Oct. 20, 1995, two of my friends and I gleefully took our seats in Walter Brown arena. We'd saved up the money to purchase season tickets (huge money for undergraduates), and couldn't wait to see the triple crown banner be raised. The beginning of the night was all of the heartpounding celebration it could be.
And then only a short time later, that all changed--That night of joy became one of profound sadness as we watched a (then) unknown freshman player fall to the ice, motionless. It was the first and only time I've personally witnessed someone injured so severely.
Since that night, I've kept up from time to time to see what Travis is doing, how he's doing, and am constantly amazed at how he's fighting. He is an inspiration, and his book should be on anyone's reading list.
Worth More Than 11Sec........2006-04-18
If your looking for a book that lets you get into the world of college hockey this is it. Its a heart felt story of a kid who is a great hockey player and dreams of playing for the University of Boston. He does so and his dreams come true when he finally hits the ice. However he only sees 11 seconds of ice time. He checks a player in the boards and breaks his neck, his whole college career ends in just 11 sec of ice time. The rest of the story tells about his life after hockey as a former player now confined to a wheelchair. It goes into detail about how his family must change, his girlfriend must change and how he must change all due to an accident. The book is not only a good ready, but also an easy read. I found that is was hard to put this down even for a min. I have to admit as a I guy I try not to show emotion, but there are times while reading this book that I did get a tear or two in my eyes. The book makes you think and also you will come to love this kid when you are done reading. I know I have!!!!
Book Description
This is, without doubt, the finest book about the crucial role that artillery played in the two World Wars of the Twentieth century. The authors, both former artillery officers who saw action in Word War Two, describe the development of their neglected, inadequate and class-ridden arm through the battles of the First World War and the eventual war-winning role that artillery played, to the culmination of professional military deployment in the Second World War.

Highly informative and technical book.......2004-04-04
This book is about the British army's effort to maintain and upgrade their weapon system from prior to World War I to the end of World War II. The authors tries to traced the cause and effects of development of modern weapon systems within the British army and how its affected its performances during these years. There seem to be a strong leaning toward artillery as one of its main subject matters. The book also showed how these new weapon systems altered British concepts of war, campaign, battle and tactics as the British army went from a "horse and foot" army to a modern mechanized army. I thought the book was well organized, researched and written.
However, having said that, I don't think this is a book for a casual reader. The pacing is bit dry and reading material seem to be geared for die-hard military history readers. I am not sure that the price offered by Amazon can be considered to be very reasonable either. I brought my copy ten years ago used for ten bucks. Its an in-depth book but not worth $300!!!

The Anthropology of Latin America and the Caribbean
ASIN: 031330856X |
Book Description
Endangered Peoples of Latin America: Struggles to Survive and Thrive offers rare insight into indigenous and marginalized groups in Mexico, Central America, and South America. This volume focuses on more than 13 endangered peoples, from the Mayans of Central Quintana Roo, in Mexico, to the Quechua of the Peruvian Andes. Globalization has had negative effects on local economies and environments, on health and nutrition, and on control of land and other natural resources, and students and other interested readers will learn how these groups have responded to the various threats. The chapters are written by anthropologists based on their recent fieldwork, which guarantees unparalleled accuracy and immediacy. Latin America comprises varied biophysical environments and diverse populations living in widely disparate economic circumstances. Endangered Peoples of Latin America: Struggles to Survive and Thrive includes peoples hit hardest by the current globalization trend. Each chapter profiles a specific people or peoples with a cultural overview of their history, subsistence strategies, social and political organization, and religion and world view; threats to their survival; and responses to these threats. A section entitled "Food for Thought" provides questions that encourage a personal engagement with the experiences of these peoples, and a resource guide suggests further reading and lists films and videos and pertinent organizations and web sites. As the curriculum expands to include more multicultural and indigenous peoples, this unique volume will be valuable to both students and teachers.
Book Description
The new Zapatistas in Chiapas have served as a catalyst for revolutionary indigenous movements across Mexico, pioneering a new model of resistance and posing a powerful threat to the stability of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Homage to Chiapas vividly depicts the grassroots struggles for land and local autonomy now underway in an economically strategic nation of nearly 100 million people. Weinberg analyzes NAFTA's impact on Mexico's campesinos with on-the-spot reportage from Tabasco, where fishermen blockade state owned oil wells to protest local pollution, from Central Mexico where plans for a giant computer complex and golf course spark an Indian uprising, as well as from Chiapas where he interviews Sub-commander Marcos. He also examines Mexico's growing militarization in the name of the War on Drugs and reviews the Zapatistas' challenge to their supporters to carry the struggle throughout Mexico and beyond its borders.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of information, needs an editor.......2007-08-12
This book is useful as a reference and a detailed chronicle. For the average reader, it is far too wordy. It needed a good editor. This book should be half the length it is. Sadly, the overall picture gets drowned in the details.
Required reading.......2005-12-11
This book is required reading for anyone interested in the effects of NAFTA and globalization in general. Weinberg is a responsible journalist whose work on this and other stories can be read daily on www.ww4report.com/blog
insightful.......2003-08-09
Bill does an extraordinary job depicting the Zapatista rebellion and the political scene. excellent corrolation between struggles in different states in Mexico and Cental and South America.
veracity and insight.......2001-07-16
This book ties together over 500 years of Mayan history and places the current conflict in its accurate historical and cultural setting. Unlike many of the current videos and some books that have been published on Chiapas and surrounding areas of Mexico since the Zapatista uprising, the author has done the extensive research needed to sort out a very complex conflict. I have traveled much in this area of the world and I immediately recognized the social and political landscape described within these pages. I cannot say this about all the books in the recent spate of Chiapas and Mayan scholarship.
I've followed Bill Weinberg's writing for years and have the highest regard for the veracity and insight of his work...

Book Description
A Revolution for Our Rights is a significant reassessment of the causes of Bolivia’s 1952 revolution. Historians have tended to view the revolution as the result of class-based movements that accompanied the rise of peasant leagues, mineworker unions, and reformist political projects in the 1930s. Laura Gotkowitz argues that the revolution had deeper roots in the indigenous struggles for land and justice that swept through Bolivia during the first half of the twentieth century. Challenging conventional wisdom, she demonstrates that rural indigenous activists fundamentally reshaped the military populist projects of the 1930s and 1940s. In so doing, she chronicles a hidden rural “revolution”—before the 1952 revolution—that fused appeals for equality with demands for a radical reconfiguration of political power, landholding, and rights.
Gotkowitz combines an emphasis on national political debates and congresses with a fine-grained analysis of Indian communities and large estates in the department of Cochabamba. The fragmented nature of Cochabamba’s Indian communities and the pioneering significance of its peasant unions make it a propitious vantage point for exploring contests over competing visions of the nation, justice, and rights. Scrutinizing state authorities’ efforts to impose the law in what was considered a lawless countryside, Gotkowitz shows how, time and again, indigenous activists shrewdly exploited the ambiguous status of the state’s pro-Indian laws to press their demands for land and justice. Bolivian indigenous and social movements have captured worldwide attention during the past several years. By describing indigenous mobilization in the decades preceding the 1952 revolution, A Revolution for Our Rights illuminates a crucial chapter in the long history behind present-day struggles in Bolivia and contributes to an understanding of indigenous politics in modern Latin America more broadly.
Book Description
This study systematically examines how states implement and comply with international environmental accords. The culmination of a massive theoretically based empirical research project, it shows how and why implementation and compliance vary among countries and treaties and change over time. It also analyzes the factors that affect the extent of compliance and offers prescriptions for strengthening national compliance with international accords.
The book focuses on compliance in eight countries (Brazil, Cameroon, China, Hungary, India, Japan, the Russian Federation, and the United States) and the European Union and on five major accords: the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972), the International Maritime Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matters (1972), the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (1973), the International Tropical Timber Agreement (1983), and the Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer (1987). This pioneering venture will be a major resource for scholars interested in compliance in general, in international environmental issues, and in international law.
