          1 out of 5 stars A Very Incomplete Guide.......2001-08-10

I was very disappointed with this guide. It left off many many key waters in the state. Granted what were there were indepth reports, but I was lead to believe by another review that this was a complete guide to the state. Nothing could be further from the truth. The author did not even cover major lakes like Lake Champlain, Lake Willoughby, Crystal Lake, Lake Memphremagog, Lake St. Catherine, Lake Whitingham, Sommerset Reservoir and Lake Bomoseen to name a few. I am located in the Southern part of the state and only four streams were discussed, and even the Connecticut River was not covered. If you are really looking for a general guide to the state, keep looking.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners or experienced........2001-01-04

Being a Vermont resident, it's nice to have a guide that is so complete and detailed for rivers and lakes in the state. The author gives personal accounts of his experiences in different bodies of water; where the best trout or bass fishing is, what time of year to catch specific types of fish, what lures or flies to use. I found this very helpful as a resource to fishing my favorite Vermont river, the White River. There are great fishing holes in places on the river I never new existed till I read this book. This is a definite must-have for anyone interested in fishing in Vermont, whether it be flyfishing or spin-casting, I highly recommend it.

Sixteen year old Kaylee suffers from synesthesia, a condition that makes it difficult to trust her senses. When she sneaks into New York City, she ends up in big trouble. Not only is she being stalked by a jerk who wants to rob her, but she is trapped in the middle of the decades worst blackout. She meets Ramon, a sloppy, sarcastic dude, in an elevator seconds before the power goes out. It is thanks to him that she is free instead of trapped. With only seven hours to get home before her father, Kaylee has no choice but to follow Ramon. As they wander through the powerless city, they pick up his little sister Rosa, a saucy violin prodigy. Can Kaylee and Ramon make it home, keep everyone safe, and fall in love before Kaylee's dad gets home?

3 out of 5 stars Senses Working Overtime.......2005-06-29

Thinking a friend needs her, Kaylee cuts school, only to find her friend is not a true friend and has placed her in a bad situation. As Kaylee tries to get out of the mess in which she finds herself, New York is plunged into a terrible blackout. For anyone, this would be a situation fraught with peril, but for Kaylee, a young girl with synesthesia- a condition that scrambles her senses, it's even worse. With only her instincts to guide her, she chooses to trust Ramon, a boy from the wrong side of the tracks who offers to help her to safety. The girl whose shirt declares she is a princess finds herself on an odyssey into a world she never knew existed in a more than academic way. It's dangerous, yet exciting, and perhaps the best decision she's ever made. On her trek home, Kaylee will learn much about the world, and about herself.

*** Though the message is fairly obvious, it's a very important one that adults of any age, young or older, need to hear and comprehend, class lines don't define who you are. Good and bad people exist in all walks of life. Beyond that parable, the information about Kaylee's condition is fascinating. Ms. Nash has taken a very simple concept and delivered a powerful message while educating her readers about something many may have never heard of. ***

4 out of 5 stars exhilarating teen thriller.......2005-06-29

Teenager Kaylee suffers from synesthesia, which provides her with a different way to perceive her environment; that can prove a handicap when the world she has been forced to adjust to radically changes. She is in Manhattan having cut school on the hottest day of the year so far when a black out shuts down the city making it difficult for anyone to cross the harbor to Brooklyn where Kaylee lives, but her condition makes it that much more difficult for her to get home. Frightened she gets her first break when she meets Ramon who promises to help her cross the bay to her home. On the way they pick up his sister Rosa.

The trek in the darkened city turns dangerous as two-legged predators are on the prowl looking for easy prey. The teens look like easy pickings for the marauders canvassing the city for mugging victims. Only her new friend Ramon, risking his life, keeps Kaylee safe on the journey home.

Having the beleaguered heroine have Synesthesia seems unneeded as the excitement of a teen in trouble during a blackout makes for an exhilarating thriller. The story line is action-packed yet the key cast members, Kaylee, Ramon, and Rosa seem real especially with the danger of a city out of control looking to devour the innocent. Readers will appreciate this fabulous teen thriller that never lets up as the audience will wonder if Kaylee will make it home in time.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Teen Paranormal Romance.......2005-06-23

Sixteen-year-old Kaylee knew that her day was starting on uneasy ground. Unfortunately, as the minutes and hours ticked by, it has gotten increasingly worse. Her friend needed help, so she did what any good friend would do - she cut summer school for the day, and headed to the Big Apple - New York City - all by her lonesome, and suddenly she's found herself smack dab in the middle of the decade's worst blackout. As if matters couldn't get worse, Kaylee is a victim of synesthesia - a defect that messes up the connection in your brain, making it impossible for her to trust her senses. Kaylee can do nothing to help herself, except to follow Ramon, a dangerous-looking, hole-in-shoe-wearing type guy whose voice - oddly enough - smells like honeysuckle. But that's nothing. Kaylee is now determined to beat her father home, to avoid the grounding of a lifetime, and finds herself with a mere seven hours to make it through chaos, carjackers, crowds, a stalker...and an awesome boy who spells trouble, but is oh so cool.

With SENSES WORKING OVERTIME Naomi Nash reveals her talent for not only being able to weave an interesting, humorous teen novel; but a more serious teen novel complete with drama galore. Kaylee is a brave, spunky protagonist, whose humorous outlook on life, and strange psychological defect will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very last page is read. Another winner for Naomi Nash!

            Book Description

The human genetic make-up of Latin America is a reflection of successive waves of colonization and immigration. There have been few works dealing with the biology of human populations at a continental scale, and while much data is available on the genetics of Latin American populations, most information remains scattered throughout the literature. This volume examines Latin American human populations in relation to their origins, environment, history, demography and genetics, drawing on aspects of nutrition, physiology, and morphology for an integrated and multidisciplinary approach. The result is a fascinating account of a people characterized by a turbulent history, marked heterogeneity, and unique genetic traits.

              Book Description

From the point of view of human population biology, South American Indians form a fascinating subject for study - both in their own right and as representing an important case-study in human evolution. In this important reference on these people, results obtained in a wide variety of different disciplines have been brought together for the first time. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of genetic variability, and the evolutionary inferences that can be made considering this variation. One-third of the book describes the extensive gene-frequency data available for South American Indian populations, which were submitted to detailed univariate and multivariate analyses. Each chapter opens with a brief evaluation of the field of enquiry to be covered. A synthesis is presented together with a list of unsettled issues, and an extensive bibliography is provided.

"You look as though you had some object in view." "So I have, dad. I'm going over to Lanton." "To Lanton? What for?" "I want to have a look at that motor-boat." "Which boat is that, Tom? I don't recall your speaking about a boat over at Lanton. What do you want to look at it for?"

4 out of 5 stars A Period Story from 1910.......2006-09-17

When I was a young boy I read the adventures of Tom Swift, Jr., the son of the Tom Swift in this series of books. I was accustomed to the science fiction stories in the new series, and I thought the original series would be similarly oriented. While this series of books incorporates technology, the level of technology is so archaic as to occasionally be humorous. Some terms are no longer used, and I suspect some technologies have changed so much from this series that I found it difficult to understand precisely what Tom was doing as he adjusted an engine.

This book is a sequel to the first book in the series, "Tom Swift and His Motor Cycle." In this story, Tom purchases a motor boat with a mystery. A gang of robbers appears to be anxious to steal the boat for some reason. The same gang of robbers also seems anxious to steal some of Tom's father's secrets. Tom and various companions cruise up and down Lake Carlopa at the blistering speed of 10 to 12 miles per hour, getting into various exciting situations. Tom frequently has to adjust his motor, which forever seems to fall into disrepair.

In the course of Tom's adventures, someone is injured and a tourniquet is required before that person goes to a sanitarium for treatment. Tom quickly acquires a fine shotgun and is happy of the fact. I was uncomfortable with the characterization of African-American Eradicate Sampson. Eradicate is illiterate and speaks poor English, though this series indicates that Eradicate is quite brave, intelligent and loyal. However, this book was written in another era. Consider that our knowledge and attitudes are very different from that era.

I initially found this book a little hard to read until I became accustomed to the style of the book. I have read quite a few books by Charles Dickens and Mark Twain that I thought were much easier to read. I do not know if this style was one that was used only for children and in this era or whether the style is that of author Howard Garis, who was the "Victor Appleton" of this book.

I found this book enjoyable once I became used to the style of the writing and once I was able to grasp the technology. I think that adults who are fans of Tom Swift, Jr. and those looking for a quaint mystery from the era before World War I will find this book an interesting read.

                  Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars A very good story from 1910.......2001-04-28

In this sequel to Tom Swift and His Motor-Cycle, Tom purchases the motorboat used by the gang in their nefarious activities. In the midst of his competition with Andy Foger, Tom discovers that someone is tampering with his boat. Who is tampering with the boat, and what are they up to? As usual, Tom combines his love of things mechanical with his boyish energy and big heart to help his friends and bring the villains to justice.

Once again, this book is also a wonderful window on the United States of 1910. While reading, you can see the comparative simplicity of mechanical devices back then, and the simplicity of life. Tom Swift presents a good role model, which is a definite plus, and the story is quite fascinating.

Eradicate Sampson, the African-American character is back, but this time the racial epithets are missing, which goes a long way towards making the story acceptable. This book begins with a synopsis of the first one, so let me suggest that this book may actually be a better starting point for reading the series. Overall this was a great book, and I highly recommend it.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great gift for a young person . . . ........1998-12-10

This fine facsimile of a classic 1910 boys' adventure book would make a beautiful gift. Young people up to about age 14 would love it. Tom discovers a secret tunnel dug by criminals to access Swift Enterprises grounds and steal his secrets. He soups up a motorboat to get double the original speed. At one point, he fights for his life as he tries to outrace a boat full of gunmen from a criminal gang. Tom is kidnapped and imprisoned, but escapes. The style is lucid, simple, and clean for young readers. The setting of 1910 adds an exotic quality to today's readers. These were the best-selling boys books of all time, with possible exception of Hardy Boys. Your son or grandson would love it. In a beautiful reprint of the original edition.

3 out of 5 stars fun.light adventure full of the flavor of the early 1900's.......1998-09-05

I was compelled to buy this book because my Dad grew up reading the original Tom Swift books and I grew up reading the Tom Swift, Jr. books in the 50's and 60's. I had never had a chance to read any of the original stories until I found this website and when I did, well, nostalgia took over.

This book is fun to read both for the story, which for Tom Swift fans from the 60's is in keeping with those stories, and for the flavor of the early 1900's. This book was written in about 1910 and the grammar and "dialogue" are of that era. Anyone who has read a book by a modern day writer trying to write as if he was in 1910 will be able to feel the difference. Tom's adventures are what you would expect in a book aimed at pre-teens, but the "Science" he uses is 1910 and presents the reader with a wonderfull picture of ordinary life in that era.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to get a view of 1910 regardless of whether or not the reader is a former Tom Swift Jr., Hardy Boys, or Nancy Drew fan.

The voluminous works of Henry Darger were discovered after his death in 1973 by his landlord in a crowded and almost derelict apartment on Chicago's Northside. Among the piles of newspapers, magazines, and hundreds of balls of twine were scrapbooks made from telephone books and an entire lifetime of creative work. Henry Darger: Art and Selected Writings is an amazing window into the extraordinary world of this outsider artist.

In order to escape his unhappy childhood in a mental institution and his reclusive adult life, Darger created his own salvation in the form of an intricate fantasy world of drawings and stories revolving around a set of little girl heroines, with vivid watercolors and collages of children engaged in battles against their enemies. The images are violent and strange, yet they achieve a fragile beauty. His work has taken a long time to gain attention in part due to his disturbing "obsession with little girls ... as hermaphrodites with small penises--and worse, a significant number of works that graphically depicted the strangulation, evisceration, and wholesale slaughter of children." Beyond the graphic nature of the artwork is a story that intertwines religion, superstition, loneliness, and bravery. This remarkable book offers the chance to take a journey through the life, mind, and creative process of a true artist, and it includes entries from his personal diaries and chapters from his fictional saga, "In the Realms of the Unreal." --J.P. Cohen

                                    Book Description

In the quarter century since the death of Henry Darger--and the discovery of the astonishing cache of artworks and writings he left behind--this reclusive Chicago janitor has become recognized as one of the most important outsider artists of the twentieth century in America.

This book provides the first comprehensive survey of Darger's art and writings. Included are reproductions of approximately 114 of Darger's collage drawings and fifteen selections from his writings, focusing on his life's work. In the Realms of the Unreal, which is an account of a cosmic struggle against child slavery unfolding on a planet vastly larger than our own. This battle between the forces of good--led by the intrepid Vivian sisters--and the evil Glandelinian nations, was illustrated and extended in Darger's art, including the mural-size watercolor drawings that represent his mature achievement as an artist.

Michael Bonesteel, a Chicago-based art critic and authority on outsider art, provides an introduction to Darger's work and narrates the Dickensian circumstances of his childhood which, along with his profound religious faith and doubt, shaped his extraordinary sensibility. A true American original, Henry Darger combined an unquestionable innocence with a dark and sometimes deeply disturbing vision to create a body of work of originality and lasting impact.

5 out of 5 stars Realms of the Unreal........2004-01-09

This isn't concerning the book but I thought I would inform everyone that there is a film on Henry Darger that will be at the Sundance Film Fest (Park City, Utah) The title of the documentary is called "Henry Darger: Realms of the Unreal." It looks to be a great film. The filmakers have also animated parts of his paintings. Hopefully the film will make to near your home in the future. I just picked up my tickets so if you can I would recommend it. Good Luck.

4 out of 5 stars unexpected, inexplicable, and simply unreal..........2002-02-26

Henry Darger (1892-1973) spent most of his life working as a dishwasher, janitor, and bandage roller at a hospital in Chicago. Darger's mother died in childbirth with his sister when Darger was 3 years old, and his father died when Darger was 15. The family was economically destitute, and the young Darger ended up in boys homes, orphanages, and such unsavory institutions as the "Asylum for Feeble-Minded Children" in Lincoln, Illinois. Darger lived most of his adult life in the same apartment, and when he died in 1973 his landlord found a number of homemade books containing three large manuscripts written and illustrated by Darger, each more than 5000 pages long.

The most important manuscript is the first, a 14 volume work titled "The Realms of the Unreal, or the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion," which Darger spent two decades writing and illustrating. This epic is the chronicled history of a 4-year war on an imaginary world. On this world, children have been enslaved and a war breaks out to free them. Spearheading the rebellion are the seven Vivian sisters, little girl heroes--figures which seem to have been based, at least partly, on Joan of Arc. Among the story's other main influences are Frank L. Baum's Oz books, the works of Charles Dickens, and the history of the American Civil War.

Darger's artwork is both imaginatively vivid and disturbing. Most of the art involves little girls as the heroes and the victims, with men and supernatural creatures called "the Blegiglomenean Serpents" (or, "the Blengins") as their oppressors. The little girls are often depicted in idyllic portraits; however, they are also often shown being strangled or killed in battle. Also, they are often nude, and sometimes portrayed as hermaphrodites with male genitals. Much of Darger's work is composed of individual figures traced from magazines or comics. Artistically, Darger is compared with figures as diverse as Blake and Andy Warhol.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Visionary brilliance.......2001-11-03

Henry Darger, the janitor who spent a lifetime writing and illustrating a loving paedophile epic of staggering proportions never seen until his death, has not yet found his time but it will come. His frenzied Blake-like illustrations have had some exposure in museums which feature outsider and folk art (like the recent exhibit at P.S.1 in NYC) but this collection of his work exhibits a glimpse of the novel they were designed to support. With no training his obsessive masterpiece includes prose, poetry, songs and maps. Infectious in a raw undeniable way it is a spelendid, brilliant, disturbing and awesome.

                                    5 out of 5 stars very nice.......2001-01-05

I've waited for a collection of Darger's work ever since I first saw a handful of originals on exhibit at the County Museum. This volume has a lot (over 100?) of high quality color reproductions of the Vivian Girls leading the sometimes bloody, cosmic child slavery rebellion against the invading Glandelinians, along with source material, and some interesting shots of Darger's studio/apartment.

There are also some pretty interesting writing excerpts from Darger's mammoth source material, REALMS OF THE UNREAL (which dwarfs the notebook writing of David Fincher's antagonists in SEVEN and FIGHT CLUB). It's pretty genuine, and the editors contend to've kept the editing to a crucial minimum.

Tim Burton, et al., can claim to be as weird or on the fringe as much as they want, but they don't hold a candle to someone with a real chemical imbalance.

It's pricey, but well worth it if you're a collector of this sort of stuff. Now, if only someone would make a comparable collection for Adolfo Wolfi...

There have been several things written about Henry Darger and his art but this book is the definitive work. If you want to understand Henry Darger and get a full appreciation of his genius,, read this book and enjoy the beautiful illustrations.

                                      Book Description

Combining military, political, cultural, social, and oral history, Sebastian Balfour narrates for the first time the development of a brutalised, interventionist army that played a crucial role in the victory of the Francoists in the Spanish Civil War. Spain's new colonial venture in Morocco in the early twentieth-century turned into a bloody war against the tribes resisting the Spanish invasion of their lands. After suffering a succession of heavy military disasters against some of the most accomplished guerrillas in the world, the Spanish army turned to chemical warfare and dropped massive quantities of mustard gas on civilians. Dr Balfour exposes this previously closely guarded secret using evidence from Spanish military archives and from survivors in Morocco. He also narrates the daily life of soldiers in the war as well as the self-images and tensions among the colonial officers. After looking at the motives that drove Moroccans to resist or cooperate with Spain, the author describes the contradictory pictures among Spaniards of Moroccan collaborators and foes. Finally, he examines the Spanish colonial army's response to the Second Republic of 1931-1936 and its brutal march through Spain in the Civil War. QUOTES FROM PAUL PRESTON'S READERS REPORT: 'This is a book of very considerable significance, the work of a first rate historian working at his peak...This is the most complete and wide-ranging account to date of the Spanish involvement in Morocco and of the consequences of that involvement inside Spain itself...written with a compelling blend of elegance and immediacy...this is a major work, one of which any historian would be proud.'

                                      5 out of 5 stars Balfour's Declaration.......2005-11-09

Balfour's book advances a strange thesis which he makes compellingly believable by the middle of the text, and from that point afterward, you believe it the way you believe the earth is round. If I oversimplify his argument, it is to state that the Spanish Army of Franco was a rag-tag scatterbrained bunch who might well have lost to the Popular Front during the War of the later 1930s had not they had the chance to hone their martial skills during a horrifying campaign earlier in the century, directly after the First World War, in Northern Africa. As Bob Hope and Bing Crosby sang, "Just like Webster's Dictionary, we're Morocco-bound," and so might have sung the colonial army of 1919-20, when they invaded Morocco with every trick in the book, including mustard gas, itself a pretty new invention.

Africa was a-swarm with colonialization, and much of the continent had already been divided up by competing French and British interests, with a smattering of Dutch privatization and heaping helpings of German outposts. The Spanish may have felt themselves embarrassingly absent from Africa, and the Moroccoan incursion might have been a matter of national pride. However they came bump up against the cunning guerrilla fighters of the Rif, a loose organization of native tribes that, frustratingly for our hermanos, seemed to vanish into air as soon as you attached them, like smoke, only to re-amass under stronger conditions from a higher hill in the sand, the minute you had counted them out for the kill.

I haven't seen much press attention for this intriguing OUP title, which has by the way some very high quality maps that help us to visualize the scene of the crime with the precision of Patricia Cornwell. Maybe some critics have ignored DEADLY EMBRACE due to its pulp title, which might have been by Cornell Woolrich or James Hadley Chase rather than a serious work of history. Specialization is so prevalent in today's history that I expect Balfour has been ignored largely because his focus is on Africa, and confounding the specialists in the Spanish Civil War who have just about myopically concentrated their gaze on Europe, with perhaps a glance at related developments in the USA and Canada.

                                                  Book Description

The recent environmental concerns as well as the struggle against chemical terrorism demand new protection technologies and/or improvement of existing ones, e.g., adsorption. Adsorption is an established industrial separation technique used both in bulk separations and purifications, and is particularly suited for the solution of those problems. The new challenges call for new, more efficient and selective adsorbents. To accomplish these needs, new directions point to the development of adsorbents of a combined or hybrid nature.

This book constitutes an up-to-date review of the latest achievements in the synthesis, characterization and applications of hybrid organic-inorganic materials and of carbon and combined adsorbents. The modeling of the adsorption process, including the simulation of carbon masks used for both civil and military protection purposes is also addressed.
