    Book Description

This influential work is the most important and widely cited book ever published in ecological anthropology. It is a classic case study of human ecology in a tribal society, the role of culture (especially ritual) in local and regional resource management, negative feedback, and the application of systems theory to an anthropological population. It is considered a major work of theory, yet it is also empirically grounded in Rappaport's meticulous collection of quantitative and qualitative data on such "material" matters as diet and energy expenditure, as well as such mental-cognitive-ideational domains as myth and folk taxonomies. Rappaport's tour de force is a recognized classic because it contributes in so many ways to anthropological theory, ethnographic methodology, ecological anthropology, and the anthropology of religion. This enlarged edition offers a carefully reasoned, empirically focused reassessment of Rappaport's original study in the context of ongoing theoretical and methodological problems.

      5 out of 5 stars Delightful Read.......2006-06-28

"Scarlett Slept Here" is a lively, interesting read. Not only did I pick up considerable background on the southern cities Dickinson mentions, but gobs of juicy info on the writers who lived or wrote there. Part of the allure of this book, to be sure, is Dickinson's delight in sharing her enthusiasm for travel and literature. If you're looking for an excuse to do some U.S. travel, you'll find it here. Heck, she's even got me excited about visiting Graceland!

5 out of 5 stars A great take on the South.......2001-06-25

Joy Dickinson's "Scarlett Slept Here" is funny, informative and finally answers the age-old question: What IS it with Southern writers and mules? It's a good book for someone who plans to hit the road in search of the literary South, or for those who'd rather settle into an easy chair to experience it vicariously through the author. The lists of "Literary Lures" with each section, and the suggested reading and Internet sources are particularly helpful. Indexed by author and literary character.

      Book Description

A turning point is exactly what Lucy Loverling does NOT want. Everything is changing around her, and suddenly she has to make all sorts of decisions. Everyone else knows who and what she wants to be except her. Izzie has become friends with the glamorous Nesta, and Lucy isn't certain she likes a threesome. Nesta and Izzie look sixteen, but Lucy, at fourteen, can still pass for a twelve-year-old.

But then one day Lucy sees the most wonderful boy crossing the street, and things do start to change -- in all areas of her life...

      5 out of 5 stars First Pick.......2007-05-29

Nesta, Izzie, and Lucy are your typical fourteen year old girls living in London. Lucy looks like a twelve year old girl, while Nesta and Izzie can pass for sixteen. Lucy decides after falling in love with a boy she saw crossing the street, who turns out to be Nesta's older brother, that she needs a complete makeover. She gets her hair cut at a training place where the girl takes all of her anger out on her hair. Luckily for her, Nesta's hairdresser fixed her up so she could get any boy she wanted, including Tony.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone over the age of twelve. You can relate to anyone in this book. Izzie's mother is a total neat freak, and are both total opposites of each other. Nesta's mom is a news forecaster who lives in a gorgeous house. She has a cute older brother, who has a different girl each week, and she is tall, skinny, and can get anyone she sees. Lucy is a unique girl. She has very supportive parents, and thinks that she is the only one with issues regarding her body.

I thought it would be a lot better than it actually was. It was good, but there was no settle plot. I bought Mates, Dates, Simple Fabulous(aka books 1-4 in the series), and I hoping that the second book will be better than the first one. If it is not, I will give up on the series. I was disappointed, but not to the extent where I didnt like the book. It was cute, but not an award winning series.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent series for young teens.......2006-05-11

As i bookseller with specialty in kids and teens, I must really give this series the "thumbs up"!

They are great "light reading", but with substantial contents for their target group. A series with all the right messages - trust in yourself, value your good friendships, be your own person, don't succumb to group pressure etc. BUT they are not annoyingly politically correct, and they are written in a way that will appeal to most age 11-14 girls.
They deal with friendships, first loves, puberty, parents, siblings, school and issues like 'what am I good at' and 'what do I want to be professionally' etc.
The first 6 books are narrated by 4 different girls (who are all friends), which gives a good insight to how different girls in a group see, react towards and percieve the various situations and issues.

      Reading "guidelines":
The first five books are good from age 11 and up, from book six the girls mature somewhat and, depending on the individual of course, readers should be a year or two older.

                        Book Description

This book is an “eye-opener” for both non-scientists and scientists, metaphysicians and physicians, students and teachers and all people with a real interest in how science moves our world. It concerns unactualized human capabilities, opportunities and adventures for all of us in the years ahead.

For the first time, a rigorous experimental protocol is available to allow human qualities to meaningfully alter the properties of physical materials via specific human intentions!

The experimental data portion of this book shows, via the use of IIEDs (Intention Imprinted Electrical Devices), how human intention can robustly influence physical reality with measurement amplitude changes by as much as 100 times the instrument measurement accuracy.

The described experiments deal with inorganic materials like water, in vitro organic materials like enzymes and in vitro living systems like fruit fly larvae.

This experimental data shows how after ~3 months of continued use of the IIEDs in a particular laboratory space, that space becomes “conditioned” to a higher state of physics Gauge symmetry than present in normal locales.

In a “conditioned” space, human intention acts as a true thermodynamic potential to significantly influence the many chemical, electrical and biological processes of nature.

This book also provides a “work in progress” - type of theoretical model that allows us to explain how this experimental procedure works to produce such striking changes in measurement amplitudes.

As Professor George Sudarshan (Physics Department, University of Texas, Austin) says: “Your new book, I am sure, may long be remembered as the book that started out the scientific work in a new area and thus created a new era in science.”

As Professor Rustum Roy (Director, Materials Research Laboratory, Pennsylvania State University) says: “This book by Tiller, Dibble and Kohane is at once a `magnum opus' and a `tour de force'. The `whole person healing' community will be in deep debt to these authors for many years.”

I loved him in What the Bleep....I have a graduate degree ( in English ) and I was always good with science and math... but this. I wanted to absorb this - get this - but I couldn't. You need to know something of the "math" of this topic to really get it. I've read better books on the subject.

It is no longer sufficient for scientists to simply deny the reality of deity outright without first considering the evidence. If mankind is to have any hope for a future, scientists must examine the God question rigorously and scientifically. In their book Conscious Acts of Creation (Pavior, 2001) William Tiller and Associates have in my opinion taken the first step in that direction.

This book is essentially a spiritual interpretation of quantum mechanics, and I believe it is the first attempt by mainstream science to explore the question of deity scientifically. Unfortunately, a great deal of the research described in the book is far too technical for the average reader, but the narrative summaries of their findings are astounding and easy to follow.

The Authors tackle the God question as a legitimate area of scientific inquiry and deal with it as they would any other physics problem. We can only hope that Tiller and Associates will not be the last to do so.

I like and don't like this book. It's billed as a book written for physics, but also applicable to people into metaphysics. But the problem is that the writing for this book is not intended for a general audience. It's intended for an audience that has a developed awareness of the highly technical language of physics and math. As such many people into metaphysics will have a hard time reading this book. I did. I had to read and reread many sections to try and understand the language being used.

A big part of the problem is that the organtization of this book's chapters is highly erratic. The authors jump around a lot. I actually understood a few of the final chapters, but only because the language was more general. I think it would have served the authors better to have put those chapters in the beginning of the text. Also none of the terms and acronyms were well defined or spelled out. A glossary would've done wonders for this book.

In defense of the book the ideas being worked with are intriguing and the authors did perk my interest and keep me reading...the problem is that while this book could interest a large audience of people, it can only have a big impact on a much smaller audience because of the highly technical language, bizarre layout, and lack of cohesion. As such the potential good this book could do is marred by the inability of the authors to write in a more accessible manner.

I did manage to understand a fair amount of this book, but I can only chalk that up to reading up a lot on physics and science. I only hope that the authors' other books are more accessible.

Regrettably I have to give this book two stars out of five and recommend to the authors that they work with an editor who can help them with layout issues and with language (in terms of making the language more accessible to a wider audience).

The field of subtle-energy sciences is newly emerging and destined to change the way we think about reality. Tiller's book provides the theory and data to support such a paradigm shift. While generally oriented toward a scientific audience, the authors also include material that is accessible to lay-persons. The idea that human thought can affect physical reality is not easily accepted by conventional science, but Tiller and his coauthors go a long way to show that our consciousness influences the world around us in more ways than we know.

5 out of 5 stars Mind Over Matter -- Proven!.......2002-06-11

In striking contrast with many books focused on next-generation physics, mathematics, biology, psychology, or medicine, Conscious Acts of Creation combines a brilliant theoretical model with several rigorous experiments that explore the influence of human intention on physical reality - in living as well as inanimate systems. It is in these convincing demonstrations that the principle "as above, so below" comes to life. Even more profoundly, the book establishes that repetition of the experiments in given locales can dramatically increase the power of the locales to reproduce the results - with some locales retaining their conditioning or "charge" for more than a year! These findings lend plausibility to that which mystics know as "sacred space."

A postulated theoretical model provides a launch point for interpreting the experimental results. Its major cornerstone is an eight-dimensional biconformal base space with two four-dimensional, Fourier transform related subspaces. One subspace corresponds to our everyday world, whereas the other subspace is a reciprocal or inverse "etheric" space - roughly analogous to k-space but with additional postulated properties including superluminal "velocities" (presumably in inverse units) and interchanged roles of electricity and magnetism. The model incorporates nonlocality, a scientific principle that may someday prove to be the underpinning for phenomena such as parapsychology and distant healing. Furthermore, the authors note similarities between their model and models proposed by other scientists, some highly prominent. Granted, the model becomes more speculative when it associates even higher dimensionalities with emotion, mind, and spirit. Even then, however, it remains consistent with various esoteric teachings, and it may yet provide the empowering mechanism for manifestation of intention (where the two subspaces, in some ways mutually symmetric, appear to play asymmetric roles) and in otherwise connecting science with spirit. Readers who disagree with the postulated model will nonetheless benefit from the authors' brilliant insights.

Mysticism aside, the postulated "mind over matter" mechanisms include a possible role for variation in atomic and molecular ground state energies. The observed space conditioning is discussed in the context of gauge symmetries. Rounding out the model are the insightful discussions of augmented electromagnetism (which the authors associate with Qi), inner self-management techniques such as Qi Gong and Yoga, and even the existence of two phases of liquid water. In Chapters 9 and 10, the authors become futurists as they suggest possible implications of reciprocal space engineering for medicine, pharmacology, communications, and manufacturing.

On the experimental side, the authors set the example in thoroughness and scientific rigor, although the in-depth discussion of the protocols as well as the order of topics may impact the book's readability. A mitigating factor is the brilliant introduction to gauge theory and the elucidation of several other topics including self-sustained oscillations, crystallography, and reciprocal space. In fact, the book is a mini physics course that presents various principles of electromagnetism, thermodynamics, solid-state physics, and quantum mechanics in a readable and understandable way. Also included is a brilliant discussion of enzymes, coenzymes and the electron transport chain as they relate to the experiments.

Scientists, healers, and others who investigate or work with subtle energies will appreciate the authors' insights on repeatability of experimental results. In the mainstream scientific community, replication of results is a test for credibility; yet consistent results in healing, dowsing, remote viewing, and ESP are often elusive. Armed with successful demonstrations of space conditioning, the authors shed new light on this longstanding issue - although they discuss other factors, both geocosmic and human, that can also impact repeatability of results.

Conscious Acts of Creation makes a convincing case that the powerful effects of intention and emotion can no longer be disregarded - in healing, in scientific research, or even in everyday life. The authors' findings may indeed have profound consequences for the concept of scientific "objectivity." More significantly, this book will take the reader beyond the realm of the everyday world and will expand one's view of himself or herself as a co-creator of reality. It is for this reason that Conscious Acts of Creation is essential reading - not only for scientists, engineers, and health care practitioners (both mainstream and complementary) but also for others who seek to maximize their human experiences. Conscious Acts of Creation indeed heralds and points a way ahead for "the emergence of a new physics."

2024 was a rough year for Drew Parker. His car broke down, his rent went up, and his partner was kidnapped by a revenge-crazed performance artist with a grant from the NEA. Worse, one of his clients had been tossed off a sky scraper-after being stripped naked, smeared in human fat, and painted with occult symbols. Drew himself had broken into the headquarters of the Christian Militia on a wild goose chase, and nearly gotten his brain fried trying to get back out. And then there was the assassination attempt on that cross dressing Cherokee Shaman, which Drew might not have stopped if he'd known how much trouble it was going to get him into. And that's not even counting the talking gorilla in the fedora. So far, 2025 isn't shaping up to be much better. What had started as a simple case involving identical quintuplet actors cloned from the frozen corpse of a dead movie star was suddenly getting complicated. The pushy stage mom was to be expected, but the secret agents from the Cherokee nation came as a bit of a surprise, as did the lethal martial artist in the clown mask who had broken into his office. Nor had Drew planned on finding himself in the middle of a political death match between competing tele-ministeries. Besides, Drew had a personal score to settle, a little matter involving a privatized version of the KGB, a ring of male prostitutes, and a vampire sex cult. Oh well, at least his Wiccan partner, Jen, is back to help him out. If he can just get her to cut back on the practical jokes and the dating advice.

                              4 out of 5 stars 2 start average or worse or 4 1/2 stars?.......2007-10-07

This is the follow on to The Gumshoe, the Witch, and the Virtual Corpse a really outstanding book. But if you don't read it first this book is very confusing as situations and characters are carried over from the previous book and explained late or not at all.

The Gumshoe Gorilla is Drew's (he's a seer as well as gumshoe) totem. The Totem is Monk Malone a character from a TV series. Totems are more powerful than traditional and are taking on their own characteristics from TV etc.

4 1/2 Stars if you read the first book first. The plot here is exceptional with a villain who is quite mad but the madness is not the cause of the villainy but rather is the reason that the villain sees his behavior as acceptable.

You down load TV and can chose ratings and content; i.e. more sex, more nudity etc. A possible future concept, however the author makes fun of himself with the ecco friendly Hindu lesbian version with extra car chases..

Some good humor as the nude version of Oklahoma. And the SMOF (Secret Masters of Fashion). The characters are vividly and well drawn and the plot is convoluted and exceptional. There are a few pieces that never get resolved; for instance Drew is assumed to be looking for the Poet and he is not. Then there's the bird who recites a poem to Drew and is then eaten by some jaws that form out of the pavement. This just adds interest.

The Poet using the highway status signs for his poem like the old Burma Shave adds (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burma-Shave for explanation and examples).

Two minor bobbles: encryption is not the protection that the author thinks but hey it's a fantasy and he's entitled. The other is a matter of fact; copyright is created when a work (poem) is fixed in a tangible media (the traffic signs). And runs for 95 years from publication. But the Production guy probably doesn't know that.

                              5 out of 5 stars great fun.......2007-01-26

Let us begin this review with a renewed claim on the publisher (there was one in my review of the first episode too): not only the editing is lousy, this has already been pointed out by the other reviewers, but how is it possible to let such a fun book go out of print? Again? Just like volume one?

This second episode is vastly different from the first one.

This time Mr Hartman employs less points of view, nearly always Drew and his partner Jen, which is an extremely fine thing because he still has not found out the way of giving each character an individual personality through his writing. As in the first episode this is particularly noticeable in the use of puns and witty remarks which are alike.

Another remarkable difference is that this time we are faced with two unrelated intrigues, far less complex and involving less characters and a more straightforward plot. It may seem a loss and maybe it is, but the book gains proficiency and focus.
This time the supernatural gore though still present leaves more room to a classical mistery.

The novel is quite long but such a page turner that you hardly realise it. It is funny and keeps you laughing silly but it has an edge, a hard one. No major villain this time, less attention to the town's complex melting pot, but if you do not get to much distracted by the wit you still notice the issues of mass media and that of the selective abortion of gay kids. Once again there is no direct statement about them, Mr Hartman leaves it to his reader to do the the ethical math, he simply displays -all too- believable facts that are likely to take place in our globalised future.

The general tone seems lighter but it is not. Once again we are lead to wonder about this future Atlanta of religious intolerance, where so-called Christians throw away the life of their gay children, where corporations globalise tastes and individuality and where the government of the biggest democracy of Planet Earth does nothing to preserve the right to happiness of its citizen, their cultural development, their well being; it prosecutes crimes such as drug using and adult prostitution (involving after all consenting adults) but allows gross social injustice and corporated crime.

Characterization is simple but well done. The matter of Drew's being a shaman and Justin Weir's death are hinted but not developped, calling out loudly for a further episode I am most eager to read.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as the first..........2004-04-19

While I enjoyed Gumshoe Gorilla, it didn't have quite the impact of the first novel. I guess sequels are often like that. The idea of telling the story from different perspectives have a greater sense of uniqueness the first time round. Mind you, I think this book was better for fleshing out its characters, so I enjoyed all the same. I would love to read more by this author.

4 out of 5 stars great story terrible printing.......2004-01-20

I think this was a great story. It was fun and engaging. It didn't seem to be as serious as the previous book, but I still loved all the characters that return for this book. I find any complaints about the "gayness" a bit over done. I suppose those people would rather there was nothing gay at all. The book never comes near a pornographic level as atleast one reviewer suggests.

All and all a great deal of fun. That said, I wish he would choose a new publisher as the place delivers crap du jour once again. Typos that stop the flow of the reading. I find myself having to stop and reread sentences just to figure out what the writer actually meant. Font sizes change from page to page causing me to wonder if there is something signifigant being said but alas no, it's just a very poor printing of a really fun book.

                              3 out of 5 stars Paging an editor...any editor.......2003-04-27

Keith Hartman's next novel should feature a really bad copy editor who is horribly killed because he simply couldn't recognize an error, even to save his skin. It would be partial revenge for the work - or lack of work - done on Gumshoe Gorilla. Almost every page contains an error, and almost every error in the grammar book is made more than once. Capitalization, font, spelling, and every element of punctuation known to the English language (especially apostrophes) - each and every one gets horribly mangled in this novel. So, if you can read English reasonably well, don't expect to be able to read this book without cringing and moaning in pain.

Despite that, though, it's a fairly good book - it'd be worth four stars without the editing problem. The characters are still fun, the writing is still funny (even if it would make Strunk and White foam at the mouth), and Hartman still has a deft hand with social satire. Unfortunately, the plot isn't quite as intelligent as The Gumshoe, the Witch, and the Virtual Corpse's was - it's too easy to put the pieces together. Readers who are looking for a puzzle to solve will be finished well before the book is over.

But readers looking for a light, enjoyable book with lots of humor will really like Gumshoe Gorilla. They'd just better bring their red pens with them.
