Free Software.......2005-12-18
Full of jargon and repetitive........2005-08-15
Free Abridged Edition & Software.......2001-03-30
The book focuses on no-cost and low cost projects for buildings of any type. The projects are arranged within each chapter in order of increasing complexity. The first ones begin with projects that, say will apply to any building (including residences), then they get increasingly complex. So there are projects for any budget and any type of facility. In fact, the emphasis is on those that can be done as part of regular maintenance!
The intended audience is not strictly engineering design professionals as you might expect from the title, but also architects, designers, facility managers, realtors, and small business owners.
Finally, there is a form in the book by which you can request some software (available free from my web site) to evaluate the projects featured in the book. Energy analysis of buildings is a complicated business and it is very educational to have a simple computer routine to study an actual building. The software compliments the projects nicely, allowing many potential projects to be evaluated easily. For example, changing roof color or window shading or operating hours.

The Neural Crest (Developmental and Cell Biology Series)
Nicole Le Douarin , and Chaya Kalcheim Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521620104 |
Book Description
This fully revised edition of The Neural Crest contains the most current information about this unique structure that has a transient existence in early embryonic life. The ontogeny of the neural crest embodies the most important issues in developmental biology, as the neural crest is considered to have played a crucial role in evolution of the vertebrate phylum. This revised edition includes new data that analyze neural crest ontogeny in murine and zebrafish embryos. Additional features include coverage of advances in our understanding of neural crest cell subpopulation markers, cell lineage analysis, and the introduction of molecular biology to neural crest research. Like its predecessor, this volume is essential reading for students and researchers in developmental biology, cell biology, and neuroscience.

The Neurology of Neuroblastoma: Neuroblastoma as a Neurobiological Disease
Nina Felice Schor Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402071442 |
Book Description
Neuroblastoma is the single most common solid tumor of childhood. Although children with small primary neuroblastomas alone are almost always cured by surgery, 65% of children with neuroblastoma already have large bulky tumors or metastatic disease by the time of initial diagnosis. For these children, the 5-year survival rate is only somewhere between 5% and 20% with therapies including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and bone marrow transplantation. Dr Schor outlines a new approach to these tumors in order to make a difference for these children. There is much information to support the notion that neuroblastomas represent a developmental aberration of the nervous system, rather than a de novo abnormality in a previously normal cell. While the remote, paraneoplastic effects of neuroblastoma are often the purview of the child neurologist, the neoplasm itself has been viewed and approached therapeutically in much the same manner as all other solid tumors, as the purview of the pediatric oncologist. This work takes the view that approaching neuroblastoma rather as a disorder of nervous system development offers new therapeutic possibilities for this common tumor of childhood.

Neurotrophins and the Neural Crest
Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0849340047 |
Book Description
The target of much current research, the neural crest is a transitory tissue of the vertebrate embryo that gives rise to many diverse structures in the adult organism, including the autonomic nervous system, the enteric nervous system, and most primary sensory ganglia, among other cell types and tissues. Reflecting recent investigations, Neurotrophins and the Neural Crest is dedicated to the roles neurotrophins play in neural crest cell differentiation and in the survival of neural crest derivatives. This timely book correlates in vitro data with results obtained from knock-out mice with targeted neurotrophin or receptor deletions, with the goal of determining the fidelity and usefulness of various experimental culture systems. It also covers embryonic expression patterns and functions of neurotrophins and their receptors. Chapters are organized to begin with neural crest-derived tissues as sources for experimental material, including sensory neurons, sympathetic neurons, enteric neurons, melanocytes, and calcitonin-producing cells from the thyroid, and concludes with discussions of the neural crest cells. A broad range of researchers and scientists involved in growth factors, neuroscience, developmental and cell biology, embryology, and many other fields, will find that Neurotrophins and the Neural Crest targets this fast-moving area of research completely and concisely.

Origin and Evolution of the Vertebrate Telencephalon, with Special Reference to the Mammalian Neocortex (Advances in Anatomy, Embryology and Cell Biology)
F. Aboitiz , and J. Montiel Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Accessories:
ASIN: 3540497609 |
Book Description
There is little doubt that the vertebrate brain is the most complex structure we know. As with any complex structure, there is the immediate question about its origins. How could such a complex design develop from the simplest multicellular animals? This problem has pervaded the study of evolutionary biology since its beginnings. Although Darwin (1859, 1871) proposed an impecable mechanism (natural selection) for the gradual transformation of species including human origins, even he sometimes expressed certain doubts about the origin of highly complex structures. This issue has been highly debated both within science and outside it.
The authors follow an approach that has been termed "developmental evolutionary genetics", which seeks to establish a correspondence between embryological processes and the phylogenetic history of an organism. Modern understanding of these hypotheses acknowledges that in fact, early embryos are readily distinguishable among them, and that human embryos are human embryos during all development; they do not pass from a jellyfish stage to a fish stage and so on (Garstang 1922; Gould 1977; Richardson et al. 1997). However, it is also recognized that embryos pass through successive stages in which they acquire the characters proper to each of the nested phylogenetic categories to which they belong. Thus, there is a general concordance between embryonic stages and the phylogenetic history.

Performance and Gender in Ancient Greece
Eva Stehle Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0691036179 |
Book Description
"Like love, Greek poetry was not for hereafter," writes Eva Stehle, "but shared in the present mirth and laughter of festival, ceremony, and party." Describing how men and women, young and adult, sang or recited in public settings, Stehle treats poetry as an occasion for the performer's self-presentation. She discusses a wide range of pre-Hellenistic poetry, including Sappho's, compares how men and women speak about themselves, and constructs an innovative approach to performance that illuminates gender ideology. After considering the audience and the function of different modes of performance--community, bardic, and closed groups--Stehle explores this poetry as gendered speech, which interacts with performers' bodily presence to create social identities for the speakers. Texts for female choral performers reveal how women in public spoke in order to disavow the power of their speech and their sexual power. Male performers, however, could manipulate gender as an ideological system: they sometimes claimed female identity in addition to male, associated themselves with triumph over a defeated (mythical) female figure, or asserted their disconnection from women, thereby creating idealized social identities for themselves. A final chapter concentrates on the written poetry of Sappho, which borrows the communicative strategy of writing in order to create a fictional speaker distinct from the singer, a "Sappho" whom others could re-create in imagination.
