Fantastic, funny and smart guide. Book Description
Meet Jordy. He’s on his own in New York City. Nobody to depend on; nobody depending on him. And it’s been working fine.
Until this girl comes along. She’s 18 and blond and pretty–her world should be perfect. But she’s seen things no one should ever see in their whole life–the kind of things that break a person. She doesn’t seem broken, though. She seems . . . innocent. Like she doesn’t know a whole lot. Only sometimes she does.
The one thing she knows for sure is that the world is an ugly place. Now her life may depend on Jordy proving her wrong. So they hit the road to discover the truth–and there’s no going back from what they find out.
This deeply felt, redemptive novel reveals both the dark corners and hidden joys of life’s journey–and the remarkable resilience of the human soul.

Their very different reactions to abuses of the past may change their futures in this delicate story mature teens will appreciate.
An enjoyable on-the-road story .......2006-06-22
"They hit the road to discover the truth --- and there's no going back from what they find out."
But, what do they find out?
In bestselling author Catherine Ryan Hyde's (PAY IT FORWARD) latest YA novel, BECOMING CHLOE, two down-on-their luck characters are thrown together by chance, and instead of separating from each other as most people would, the two stick it out to the end, for better or for worse. It's a heartwarming story in the "do good things for your neighbor and he/she will give back to you" sort of way, but it smacks of the unbelievable at times and borders on feeling forced at others. Nonetheless, Hyde is a veteran storyteller and certainly knows how to weave an entertaining tale that will interest young readers --- especially those looking to travel cross-country without leaving their bedroom.
Eighteen-year-old Wanda Johnston (Chloe) and 17-year-old Jordan are "introduced" to each other under unfortunate circumstances. Jordan is living in an abandoned basement in New York City, accessed only from the street by an open cellar window. One evening, he hears screams and realizes that a girl (Chloe) is being raped by a group of rowdy men in the alley outside. In a selfless moment of pure bravery, Jordan attempts to save Chloe by frightening the men away with his yells about cops. Little does he know that this simple act will change his life forever.
Soon after the rescue and the trip to the clinic to get Chloe checked out, the two become inseparable --- so inseparable that Jordan becomes her guardian angel, of sorts. He calms her down when she gets riled up; he protects her from lecherous men; and he basically takes care of everything else in her life for her (food, shelter, clothing), despite the fact that he is barely able to keep afloat himself. It turns out
that Chloe has some sort of mental illness (although we never really find out what that "illness" is, despite the mention of Zoloft, depression, and various emotional "fits") on top of a horrendous past, and needs a little looking after so that she doesn't get herself into trouble.
The question is...why does Jordan take on that task? Does he love her? Yes, but not in a sexual way --- he's gay (a subplot that is touched upon, but not fully developed). Does he want something from her? It doesn't seem that way, unless you count his subconscious craving for a companion and someone he can take care of in the way that he wasn't growing up. The question is never fully answered, but readers will get a sense that the union between Jordan and Chloe is quite unique --- a cross between friendship, family, and teacher/student --- and one that benefits both of them, each in his/her own way.
Readers will most enjoy Jordan and Chloe's cross-country trip from Connecticut to Big Sur, California, wherein they experience the pleasures of seeing Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert, and more. There are a few major bumps during the trip (the car breaking down, getting beaten up by drunk twenty-somethings while hitchhiking), but for the most part, the two spend their time seeping up the beauty that the world contains, while meeting a few interesting people along the way. An enjoyable on-the-road story for the wanderlust with an edge.

A wonderful book!.......2006-06-16
In Becoming Chloe, Catherine Ryan Hyde's second novel, we meet Jordan and Chloe--two of society's broken and castaway children trying to survive on the streets of New York City.
Jordy is 17, gay, runaway, part-time prostitute and occasional thief.
One night, while sleeping in the cellar of an anonymous city
building, he overhears a gang rape happening in the alley outside
his window. By shouting out and scaring off the attackers, he
manages to rescue Chloe. Chloe, 18 yet childlike, is hiding behind
a facade of innocence, but occasionally the traumas she has faced
in her past loom to the surface. Jordy and Chloe quickly find in
each other a comfort and security that they both are lacking, and
become firm friends.
The simple and naive Chloe views Jordy as a safety net, and Jordy
faces this responsibility with a maturity and wisdom beyond his
years. Together they endure illness, violence, and the grinding
horrors of life on the streets. Although their situation begins to
improve, thanks to Jordy's perseverance and hard work, Chloe is
unable to cope and suffers a breakdown that alters their plans.
When Chloe decides that life has nothing beautiful to offer her,
Jordy begins a one-man campaign to show her otherwise...and it is
here that the true power of the story lies. Jordy becomes beauty
personified as he races to bring the world to Chloe before it's too
late, and they set out on a journey that will challenge them like
nothing before.
To Jordy, mountains, deserts and even the Grand Canyon are no
obstacles when it means saving someone you love. As they finally
reach the West Coast and Chloe sees the ocean for the first time,
both she and Jordy find themselves learning things about each
other and themselves that will test their friendship and alter their
lives forever.
This powerful novel about life, love, and growing up is from a
perspective that is fresh and unerring.
Armchair Interviews says: Catherine Ryan Hyde has again managed
to dazzled us with her uncanny ability to write about teens in a
down-to-earth and totally believable manner.
Find the beauty of the world within a book.......2006-06-14
When run away Jordan rescues Chloe from a gang rape, he finds himself with a new friend who is stuck in the same situation. Jordan who was almost murdered by his abusive father for being gay turned to the streets when he met Chloe. Chloe has had a pass that is darker than anyone could imagine and refuses to tell it to Jordan. Together they set out on the road to help Chloe see the beauty that she has been missing all her life. Along their journey across the United States they meet new friends and take in what they both have been missing out on their whole lives.
I really enjoyed reading this book as it opened up my eyes to how fortunate I really am. It really made me think about what my views are on the world and the people in it. Becoming Chloe was a book that I would recommend to anyone of all ages who needs an uplifting book with a happy ending. This book is definitely and eye opener to things we take for granted and will really make the world seem a whole lot more beautiful than we may think it is.
A Beautiful, Modern-Day Fable.......2006-05-05
Catherine Ryan Hyde has the wholly enviable talent of slipping beneath the skin of her characters and making them come alive in a way no other author can. She does not pull punches when it comes to putting a character's harsh reality onto the page. That "Becoming Chloe" begins with a brutal gang-rape is testament to that. But don't flinch, because in true Hyde style, that very event is what gets us to the heart of Jordy's character. We find that he is not courageous -- perhaps due to the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father -- and we also find that Chloe appears disconnected from reality.
Jordy rescues Chloe from her attackers, and thus begins a journey of wonderment and beauty reminiscent of "Benny and Joon." While both Jordy and Chloe are damaged in their own ways, their lives together are like a two-part harmony. They learn from each other, and experience the world with each other like only true friends can.
"Becoming Chloe" is written like a modern-day fable, with its message perhaps being: Beauty is everywhere if you just know how to look for it.

Gives a detailed explanation of the different properties needed for environmental modeling and even for chemical engineering design. Very well written, thought a little boring (is imposible to be funny with this kind of material). Puts you in the right track immediatly.
Book Description
In this book overlapping generations economies are analysed from a game theoretical point of view and the social acceptability of consumption allocations is studied in infinite horizon models of pure exchange economies with agents with finite lifetimes who behave cooperatively. The core of such economies and its relation with competitive equilibria, both walrasian and monetary and the essential characteristics of the overlapping generations model are examined. The author defines the problem of trust in intertemporal consumption allocations as a question of belonging or not to the core of economy and provides a full characterization of the core allocations for n-goods pure exchange economies with one agent per generation: a consumption allocation belongs to the core if and only it is Pareto optimal and Sequentially Individually Rational. From this it follows that for one commodity economies no consumption allocation involving intertemporal transfers can belong to the core of the economy. In other words, no monetary equilibrium is socially viable. This result is no longer true for many goods models. For that case it is demonstrated that there exist bounds on the real value of equilibrium money purchases beyond which monetary equilibria are not socially viable and with many agents in every generation it is shown that as the economy becomes large and monetary (as well as IOU) equilibria become eventually excluded from the core of the economy. These results provide an analytical rationale for the fact that in most countries fiat money is legal tender.

Book Description
This tautly told story steps back to a time when Detroit's boosters described their city as one of the most cosmopolitan in the world. It was also a city in which tensions between blacks and whites seemed manageable. Yet all that changed in 1925, when a black family named Sweet bought and moved into a house in a white neighborhood. What began with mothers bringing their children to gawk and stare soon became an angry mob of men, some of them from the local KKK, with stones.
The violence that ensued landed Ossian Sweet, a doctor from the "talented tenth," and others from his family in jail and compelled the NAACP -- which had taken up the Sweets' case -- to hire famed attorney Clarence Darrow, who had just finished defending the plaintiff in Tennessee v. John Scopes. Darrow's defense led to one of the most incendiary courtroom dramas in the history of the United States. The outcome was a triumph of cooperation that transcended race in the name of justice.

Clarence Darrow to the Rescue........2004-10-30
In the latest issue of the journal, 'Nature,' there is an account of a fossilized "human" on an island near Java. Only three feet tall with a grapefruit-sized brain which is 2/3 smaller than a human brain leads me to conclude it was a chimpanzee instead of an adult dwarf, as they claim. The description of the teeth which survived for 18,000 years in a limestone cave surrounded by coffee farms confirm this.
It took research teams forty years to find this skeleton (actually not complete as the hands and feet are missing). It was uncovered thirteen months ago by teams from Australia and Indonesia, and the article leads one to believe this discovery will 'rewrite evolution,' according to a spokesman for London's Natural History Museum. From this group of bones, the paleontologists could determine there was hardly any chin or browline. Now, we know that our ancestors had prominent brows. If, in future excavations, they find claws, we'll know it was a monkey as other parts signify ape-like features.
This is either a bogus report of they more than likely found a baby orangutan. This article claims we had a "real-life Middle Earth" as in 'Lord of The Rings' in which the dragons were simply giant lizards and elephants as small as ponies. Who are they putting on? I need more proof before I will accept this as truth.
This book is about Clarence Darrow's next case after he defended Thomas Scopes in Dayton, TN, called the Monkey Trial. After suffering through the indignity of a Tennessee non-air conditioned courtroom in our TN withering heat and humidity, and losing the case by a bare margin (though he did lose), a nominal fine which humiliated those opposed to his theatrics in the courtroom drama. Since he was defending the young teacher who chose to instruct his students about the scientific evolution, he became an icon for justice for the 'under dog.'
I don't agree that the outcome was a triumph or "transcended race in the name of justice"; he erroneously felt that courts and the law could tame injustice. His childhood hero had been John Brown, the abolitionist who led the attack at Harper's Ferry, West VA. He thrived on taking controversial cases, and advocated for justice and the rights of the downtrodden.
Though he was noted for his eloquence, humor and satire (all put to good use in his defense tactics in the Scopes trial), he couldn't distinguish between two dark complexioned Jewish attorneys and "colored people" and lacked tact with remarks to Walter White, the assistant secretary of the N. Y. City NAACP. Being from the Mid-West (born in Iowa), he knew nothing about racism, made blunders due to his illlusory misconceptions and myths based on race.
In 1925, there were twelve million blacks living in Detroit and one Dr. Sweet put them all in jeopardy by exerting his "right" to live in a white neighborhood. According to this author, a white former teacher at the University of Michigan, Phyllis Vine, this decade (1920s) was the only time in American history our nation came close to an outright race war. I disagree.
She talks about Jim Crow, lynchings by the KKK, kangaroo courts, desecration of the American Dream, and so-called tolerance of racial violence in the U. S. A death incurred during the commotion of Dr. Sweet's 'thumbing his nose' at American society; as a result, he and ten others were on trial in Detroit for murder.
Darrow was old (69 yrs.) by then and tired, thoroughly exhausted by the trial in Tennessee (prefacing this case), but was enticed into taking this case for the notoriety. He and I have one thing in common, being against the death penalty. He had the ability to influence juries to decide on prison sentences instead of the electric chair. He'd just lost the TN Monkey case but, perhaps as a consequence of his courtroom tactics had caused the death of William Jennings Bryan, his opponent.
When finally persuaded by the NAACP to take this case, he'd decided on 'self-defense' as the cause of the shooting to death one of the rioters. He and his TN co-defense counsel, an attorney from New York, obtained the services of other white lawyers seeking national press coverage. The whole case was on the premise, the "old principle of a man's right to protect his home as his castle" and the failure to prove a "conspiracy to commit murder."
The Epilogue was the most interesting part of this book, to see how this case brought prestige to some of the principals (the judge was appointed Governor of the Phillippines, a U. S. attorney General, and on the United States Supreme Court by FDR) and disgrace to others (Dr. Sweet ended up as a suicide after failures on all sides of his personal life after this incident).
James Johnson, executive secretary of the N.Y. NAACP, came to Fisk University (where my son Zachary taught English for five years) to teach and died in a car/train collision. While in TN, he wrote five books which were published, incuding an auto-biography, ALONG THIS WAY.
Darrow's co-counsel went on to defend Sacco and Vanzetti, who were executed for murder, based on questionable evidence, and assisted in the famous Scottsboro trial of nine black Southern men who raped two women on a train.
Detroit was declared the 'wickedest city in U.S.' and that house on Garland Avenue where this murder was perpetrated is now on the National Register of Historic Places. That should please Jack Neely. With his aid, we have so many old dilapidated downtown structures with those markers, and I am wondering what the signifigance of all this nonsense will entail. Just because something ununusal or notorious happened at that spot does not make it 'historic.' Tell that to the preservationists. We need progress in this town and this nation, not living in the past.
A rose by any other name.......2004-10-10
A rose by any other name
ONE MAN'S CASTLE is an all too familiar story about victimization simply because of the color of someone's skin. Phyllis Vines
reconstructs a suspenseful detective story that heralds a collision between a Black physician and the Ku Klux Klan.
Dr. Ossian Sweet journeyed to Paris, France to study medicine under the supervision of Madame Curie. At that stage of his life, Sweet has reached all of his goals; attended the right schools, received a medical degree that would guarantee him financial and social prominence, and had married well. But when he and his wife arrive at the American hospital in Paris to deliver their first child, they are turned away. And seemingly for the first time Sweet realizes he is not protected from the opprobrium of racism. Racism is not new to Sweet, he is a son of the south, but his previous racial encounters were impersonal to him. However, after hearing the words of the American Ambassador, that 'the hospital is operating in the spirit of America', things change for Sweet. This time racism carries a personal tag, as if Jim Crow had searched for him and targeted his sense of masculinity.
The Sweets return to the states and acquire lodging in a fairly affluent section of Detroit, Michigan. But this is an America still wallowing in the bowels of racial disparity. The Sweets become victims of racial slurs, physical attacks on their home, and blatant indifference from the local police authorities. Amid the volatile confrontations between the racial groups someone is killed and all of the occupants of Sweet's home are jailed.
This extensively researched and tartly presented tragedy of Dr. Ossian Sweet's efforts to reside in a home he purchased in an all-white Detroitneighborhood introduces a colorful cast of characters and a wide range of social history. Because Detroit's population described their city as one of the most metropolitan cities in the world, the tension between Blacks and whites was supposedly manageable, but the events in 1925 changed that perception. The NAACP was compelled to hire famed lawyer Clarence Darrow, which led to one of the most incendiary courtroom dramas in the history of the United States. This is a remarkable book about our obsession with race. It reads like a thriller, except this story is true.

Vine grows on you, Darrow's story grow hope for everyone.......2004-10-07
This story motivated more than one judge to begin their study of law in the hope that they too could combat racism and ignorance. While this is the beginning of one of many victories, the problem of race continues and the courts remain a viable means of change. Schools remain segregated, public funds remain unbalanced, and inequality before the courts for minorities is yet not eliminated. But Vine gives us hope that one day, with lawyers and judges who care this much will create such a world.

"a reader" is highly biased reviewer.......2006-08-03
A quick search shows that "a reader" appears again and again in reviews of books about Darrow, and makes repeated, unsubstantiated and biting attacks on the great trial lawyer. These are obvious vendettas, not reviews worth considering. The reviewer neither identifies himself or herself properly (i.e., doesn't have the courtesy to take ownership of the criticisms); nor is any substantial evidence offered - only thin opinions that appear to be more slander than thoughtful evaluation. Darrow, for all his faults, deserves better treatment!
Great work by a great author.......2004-03-23
Okay, I'm not one to regularly demean other's comments, but sometimes silly libel has to be contended. The author Irving Stone is the well regarded writer of biographies on Jack London, Michelangelo, and Vincent van Gogh. I.F. (Isador Feinstein) Stone was a journalist and is known for being a vocal opponent to Joe McCarthy.
The latter is the one mentioned in the Venona transcripts, and is an enemy to even modern right wing thinkers, for good or bad reasons. Whatever your politics on this doesn't matter. Irving Stone is not the man mentioned.
I come from fundamentalist stock. I'm a conservative in politics, and very committed to my faith. Rather than being a distasteful book to me, however, this biography tells of a man who lived during a complicated era. He rejected the church, and yet in his work held up the most basic precepts of Christian thought, defending the poor, helping the helpless.
This is not to say he was without his problems. And Irving Stone is not writing a hagiography, and so the reader becomes aware of his faults as well as his greatness. Stone is the master of primary documents, taking written and oral sources, as well as large amount of secondary material, and crafting these into a well told narrative. This is not a strick biography, seeking instead to envelop the reader into the story.
My regard for the subject grew, despite my occasional disagreements on his stance. He stood his ground, and fought for those who were oppressed by the powers that be in that time. Darrow was also human, very human. This book is a superb introduction to the story of his life, and the era which he in many ways represented.
Those interested in the early twentieth century, in culture wars, in the growth of labor movements, would benefit greatly from reading this.
Such utter silliness as calling this book propaganda should be dismissed as both ignorance of the author, coupled with a hate for what Darrow did stand for. Read Stone's other books first if it helps, to see his credibility as an author and narrative biographer. Among all of those this remains my favorite, and well worth picking up, even if used.
Biography of a myth.......2004-02-09
Clarence Darrow is highly over-rated as a trial attorney. Many of his verdicts in Cook County were the result of his bribes to selected jurors. He lost his most famous cases- Loeb and Leopold, and Scopes. Darrow was driven by a hardline socialist dogma, but he still represented corporations when he needed the money. Irving Stone, the author, has been revealed as a Soviet agent in the Venona transcripts. His views about Darrow are biased with his twisted view of American society. If you read this book, realize that it is not an objective biography about Darrow, but a propaganda piece instead.
One of the GREATEST AMERICANS and TRIAL ATTORNEYS ever.......2002-12-23
This book is a good introduction to the life of Clarence Darrow. It spans all his major cases and leaves the reader with awe for a man whose ability as an attorney in the Dr. Oscar Sweet case in Detroit, Michigan in 1925 was as if God had descended heaven from Heaven to win the freedom of a black professional who was accused of murder in an America that already had witnessed the Tulsa, Oklahoma and St. Louis race riots. His defense of the poor in the anthracite coal case of 1902 and the rioters in the Haymarket case stand as models for Americans of any age. The only weakness in the book is that his addresses to juries are not included. Clarence Darrow is as important to Americans as Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Delano Roosevelt were in the eras of the Civil War and the Great Depression. I recommend this book for all Americans of all ages. He was a defender of the poor and a defender of the values and ethics of American society. Elliot Spitzer, the Attorney General of the State of New York, is some ways bears resemblance to Clarence Darrow. I recommend the book highly, the reverence I have for the life of Clarence Darrow is huge only for God do I have more.
