Good guide to cat breeds that needs updating.......2005-09-10
The Simon & Schuster Guide to Cats is unique in that essential information is provided in a concise format for every breed of cat, including a picture of each breed and its variations. The information provided per breed is one or two pages of information that includes origin, coat, color, body, head, eyes, tail, character, ideal owner, environment, diet, recommended care, reproduction, faults, and varieties. Also included are symbols that tell the reader whether or not a particular breed is particularly playful or requires extra grooming. It is ideal for the cat owner or potential cat owner who wants to understand the particular needs of a particular breed of cat. No other guide I have found gives such a wealth of information. As other reviewers have noted though, newer breeds are omitted, such as the Munchkin, Bengal, Selkirk Rex, and LaPerm probably due to the age of this guide which was published in 1983. It is for this lack of updated information that I give it four stars instead of five.
Handy pocket sized, but detailed reference work.......2001-11-11
Like the best-selling Simon & Schuster's Guide to Dogs, this new Guide to Cats is the best available, whether you need it primarily for identification, to help you choose a breed suitable for you, or for pure
reading pleasure. Concise, informative, and illustrated completely in full color, this book describes the fascinating history of cats and features 40 longhair and shorthair breeds, detailing for each its origin, coat,
color, body, head, eyes, tail, character, ideal owner, environment, feeding, care, mating, faults, and varieties, in accordance with North American standards. In addition, colorful symbols assist the reader in
understanding and appreciating each breed at a glance.
Over 200 full-color illustrations covering shorthair and longhair breeds, with a description of origin, physical and personality characteristics, ideal owner, diet, care, and much more, including helpful symbols for such traits as Good Mouser , Good with Children , and other traits.
Good book but needs more breeds........2000-10-17
Half of this book was introduction. Although the introduction was very informational, There was too much. And it's true, they did leave out the Munchkin,Bengal, and there were a few more. I just can't remember them at this moment. This was a very good book though. I just don't recommend it to anyone who is tring to decide what breed they want.
Okay book but,.......1999-12-04
I think this book was okay but it has more introduction than breeds. It also left out a few breeds like the Munchkin,Bengal and more. If you don't mind having a few breeds missing than this is an okay book.
GREAT BOOK FOR INFORMATION ON MANY CAT BREEDS!.......1998-07-16
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK, IT DESCRIBES EACH BREED, WITH MANY EXTRA'S THAT OTHER BOKKS DON'T INCLUDE, SUCH AS TERMPERMANT AND ENVIRONMENT. I ENDED UP GETTINNG A CAT FROM THE SHELTER, BUT THE SECTION ON CAT CARE STILL HELPED ME, EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT THE BEST BOOK TO BUY JUST FOR INFORMATION ON CAT CARE.

Book Description
THE GREAT MAYAN CIVILIZATION DISAPPEARED MORE THAN 800 YEARS AGO. COULD WE BE NEXT?
Your friend Tom disappears on assignment in Mexico searching for clues to the sudden collapse of the Mayan civilization. Meanwhile a pool of human blood appears at a Mayan ruin where Tom was last seen alive. What is behind Tom's disappearance? Has he traveled back in time? Or are the practices of the Maya alive and well, including human sacrifice?
" A large spacecraft hovers over the pyramid. "What's happening Manuel?" you ask, hardly believing what you see. "These Mayan ruins are contact points for other planets. Earth is seen as a leading planet. Other civilizations want to learn from us. They asked us to come to an outer galactic congress on the rights of life in the universe. That is the last transport. If you think Tom may have gone on the mission, go now."
If you decide to join the mission, knowing the danger of never returning, turn to page 87. If you decide to stay and finish your job, turn to page 88.

Mysterious and Interesting.......2007-01-09
I would reccomend this entire series, and especially this book. The cover really jumped out at me. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. Any young reader would enjoy this book. You travel back to the time of the Mayans to find your friend Tom. You end up with a whole lot more on your hands than just your friend's disappearance. You run into aliens, Mayans, and a whole bunch of adventure. You might end up in jail, you might find your friend Tom, or you could even travel to outer space. This book won't leave you disappointed. Each turn of the page and decision adds a new level to the mystery. You have to deal with the tradition of human sacrifice with the Mayans, as well as dangerous strangers. Watch out and you just might make it out alive.

Book Description
Woolf’s response to parties as heightened social occasions is demonstrated in her great novel Mrs. Dalloway. The party on which it focuses spilled over into these seven stories, written during the same period. They are here published in this unified sequence for the first time. Edited and with an Introduction by Stella McNichol.
Customer Reviews:
Test the Waters of Virginia Woolf's Genius.......2007-08-04
You don't need to have read the classic novel Mrs. Dalloway to appreciate this collection of short stories (which take place at the party which is the centerpiece of that book) in order to appreciate Woolf's genius, although it certainly won't hurt. Woolf's internal monologues are, if anything, more delightful in these smaller doses. The point of view is always clear, and those who have found Woolf's prose to be sometimes a tad tiring will be pleased to find this much easier reading. As in the novel, her characters are emotionally flawed, thoroughly believable, and all-too-familiar. A perfect choice for readers not ready to commit to a complete novel by Woolf, but who want to know what all the excitement is about.
Rich Little Stories.......2001-05-14
While best known for her novels, Virginia Woolf also wrote essays and short stories. This is a short collection of seven stories from the period 1922 to 1927, around the publication of Mrs. Dalloway. Some of the stories had previously been published elsewhere, but this is the first publication for two of them.
Like the novel, these short stories surround the party; but unlike the novel, most of these stories focus on the guests at the party. The first of these relates an expedition of Clarissa Dalloway's to buy gloves, and is full of all the interior monologue one might expect. The rest are rather character sketches and encounters among Mrs. Dalloway's guests, and absolutely leave one satisfied with a picture of each character and encounter. If you enjoyed Mrs. Dalloway, and you can read short stories, you absolutely will enjoy this book.

Customer Reviews:
ONE MAN CARAVAN.......2007-04-12
this book was a pleasure to read, since I have been to many of the places he has been. It is true and wonderful and I am glad that from now on it is mine.
Candy for the imagination .........2007-01-10
I really enjoyed this book; it was too soon over.
I have ridden motorcycles for many years and would liked to have seen more comments on the practical aspects of the trip, even though it was many years ago. I suspect that Mr. Fulton did not keep daily notes but probably wrote down his memories at the conclusion of the trip, thus the detail is not always there.
The portrait of the middle East gives something for the people of today something to think about - basic beliefs and attitudes in that region may not have changed at all. Our expectations may need to be adjusted.
A long trip on a motorcycle is an unforgettable experience for anyone, even today. Four or five days from home, and the resources available there, projects the rider into a state of independence and freedom that I have not found any other way - imagine what it was like for Fulton to be riding across the desert, months from home, no road in some cases, towards the unknown, his life dependent upon his machine continuing to run, and totally on his own.
Every rider should get to read this book - a great treat for the imagination.
Best book i have ever read.......2007-01-04
I could not put this one down. The story is so fantastic that you almost can't believe it happened. To see the world a little as it was 70 years ago was truly a window into the past.
Robert Fulton is a suprizingly good author in that the book flows smoothly and he only talks about what he finds interesting.
Great read for 'bikers' and other travellers!.......2005-08-02
In One Man Caravan, Robert Fulton has caught the magic of exploring new places and meeting people from cultures very different to his own. He writes with real fluency and his words evoke the graphic images of the colourful lands through which he takes the reader on this wonderful journey.
The First &The Best.......2004-11-22
Grandson of the Fulton Engine Genius, and Discoverer/Inventor in his own right, rides around the world on a Douglas Twin during his twenties on a bit of a lark. Out of his off-handed remark to impress a young woman we have one of the best motorcycle travel books ever written. Published umpteen times, I can imagine this book spurring on new generations of riders for decades to come.
The writing is excellent and extremely detailed, we get a breakdown of his trip during each section, along with Fulton's own sketchings and maps of the areas and people he met along the way. Photographs, of all things, to boot: images of a bike in the sea of sand, desert nomads and marketplaces; this book feeds your imagination. After 1 year of reading it a memorable item comes immediately to mind: That of Fulton being saluted and waved straight through road-blocks without stopping, to his incredulity, in occupied and dangerous Warizistan (yes, you've heard this place in the news recently), only to find that he shouldn't have made it past the first gate. It was his safari hat and fatigues that made them believe he was Indian-Army/British attache of all things. ;^)
Fulton himself is still living life with adventure. Still kicking with his old Douglas Twin and flying his own plane at the age of 87+.
If you want the best grab the first. You'll never put it down, and you'll go back a few times just to make sure you got it right when you read it there the first time.
[For other two-wheel journey books I recommend Jupiter's Travels by Ted Simon- inspiration for Ewen McGregor's recent "The Long Way Round" and Ted made the trip without cameramen and support crews!]

"THE GREEN BERET . . . A SYMBOL OF EXCELLENCE,
A MARK OF DISTINCTION, AND
A BADGE OF COURAGE."
Though engaged in the United States' longest and most controversial military action, the Green Berets rose above the fray to establish an awesome reputation based on their extraordinary skill, discipline, bravery, and sacrifice. Now, with access to information declassified for the very first time, Shelby Stanton--author, military historian, Green Beret, and Vietnam vet--presents the first and most authoritative, comprehensive, and detailed battlefield history of Special Forces in the Vietnam War.
Making use of firsthand combat interviews, original records, and his own Special Forces experience, Stanton presents a vivid, unvarnished, and thoroughly researched account of one of the best and most highly decorated special-operations units ever. Here are the real stories behind the legends of combat valor and battlefield success forged by U.S. Army Special Forces during more than a decade of fighting in the tropical swamps and deep jungles of Southeast Asia.
With photos, maps, charts, and special sections on Congressional Medal of Honor winners and MIAs
Customer Reviews:
Detailed review of Special Forces 1956-1975.......2004-03-06
This is a volume that gives details and a lot of names of individuals who served in Special Forces from 1956 to 1975.
Vietnam is covered in some detail. There are chapters on SF in Okinawa, Laos, including the White Star operation, The Montagnards, operation Switchback, the LLDB, Tet, The Green Beret Navy, the Mike Forces, CIDG program.
There are maps showing where the SF operatied, including Laos and Thailand.
There are sections also on the SF MIA's and on the Medal of Honor Winners.
This is a good book for anyone wanting to know about the SF in the years covered.
Most comprehensive record of SF operations in SE Asia.......2001-02-04
I made the decision to join Special Forces in 1987 after reading this book. It is by far the most detailed and comprehensive account of Special Forces units and missions in Southeast Asia. There are plenty of "There I was ....." books written by SF men who fought there, and these are great reads and definitely of great historical importance, but this one puts all of it into chronological order. The book begins with the activation of 1st Special Forces Group in 1957 and ends with the final missions of the early 70s. All major operations and facets of SF participation are covered, to include MACV-SOG, CIDG, LLDB, and the Mike Force units. I give this book 5 stars in spite of the fact that the author has failed to respond to allegations in the book "Stolen Valor," which maintains that the author lied about participating in combat missions as well as being wounded in Laos, and used thousands of stolen unit records to write this and other historical works. These accusations do not detract from the book's quality, but if they are true I give the author zero stars for integrity.
Excellent overview of Special Forces in Southeast Asia.......2000-01-20
Stanton's book traces the evolution of US Army Special Forces in Southeast Asia from 1956-1975. He addresses the varied programs and missions that were conducted under Special Forces auspices during the period of American military involvement in Laos, Cambodia, and Viet Nam. His use of official records coupled with interviews with many of the participants provides an insight that all serious students of Speicial Forces will appreciate. The book includes maps of operational areas and provides a listing of Special Forces personnel classified as missing in action as well as Special Forces recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Excellent summary of Special Forces operations in SE Asia.......1998-01-06
Mr. Santon presents an excellent and authorative review of Special Forces (Green Berets) overt, covert and clandestine special warfare operations in Southeast Asia from 1956 through 1975. I was especially pleased to see some of the photos that I took while serving in B36, Third Mobile Strike Force, from 1969-1970 in War Zone D. Good Job! The text is a must for every Green Beret's library. I sincerely want to locate a copy for my Special Forces / Special Operations library.

Book Description
Gender and Elections offers a systematic, lively, multi-faceted account of the role of gender in the electoral process through the 2004 elections. This timely, yet enduring, volume strikes a balance between highlighting the most important developments for women as voters and candidates in the 2004 elections and providing a more long-term, in-depth analysis of the ways that gender has helped shape the contours and outcomes of electoral politics in the United States. Individual chapters demonstrate the importance of gender in understanding and interpreting presidential elections, voter participation and turnout, voting choices, congressional elections, the participation of African American women, the support of political parties and women's organizations, candidate communications with voters, and state elections. Without question, this book is the most comprehensive, reliable, and trustworthy resource on the role of gender in electoral politics.

Book Description
Forests at the wildland-urban interface are at increasing risk due to the impacts of urbanization. Conserving and managing these forestlands for continued ecological and social benefits is a critical and complex challenge facing natural resource managers, land-use planners, and policymakers. Forests at the Wildland-Urban Interface: Conservation and Management provides information, strategies, and tools to enhance natural resource management, planning, and policymaking at the wildland-urban interface. The text is arranged in five sections: forestland changes at the wildland-urban interface and why they are occurring; economic, policy, and land-use planning tools that can be used to manage growth; methods for communicating with and engaging the public; ecosystem management tools for sustaining the provision of ecological goods and services from interface forests; and ways in which various types of landowners are pursuing conservation and management of forests in the interface. By combining science and management, theory and practical problem solving, this book addresses a broad range of issues associated with the wildland-urban interface and provides possible solutions. Natural resource professionals and urban planners will find this a crucial resource for coordinating and implementing sound policy and practice.
