5 out of 5 stars A good insight into Nepal........2000-01-25

In 1965 Irish born traveller Dervla Murphy sets off to Nepal to work as a volunteer with the Tibetan refugees. Having previously worked in Dharamsala, India with the newly exiled community, which had by this time found it's feet & in her opinion was no longer in need of another Western volunteer, Dervla's interest now lay in neighbouring Nepal which was still struggling with the influx of refugees.

Written in the form of a diary, Murphy recounts the months that she spent in the 'waiting land'. Sharing her lodgings with rats & an extensive range of insects, her no nonsense attitude & the equanimity with which she views each situation makes interesting reading. Even Miss Murphy cannot understand why the Tibetans made such a fuss over 'a few leeches' whilst trekking. Many westerners would find her experiences unacceptable, especially waiting days for a delayed flight & the hilarious but potentially dangerous airport at Pokhora where children play, animals graze & dogs fight on the runway until an aeroplane approaches & a whistle is blown to clear the way. As of yet, she declares that miraculously there has been no fatalities.

Although Miss Murphy believes that the Tibetans are probably one of the dirtiest races, her admiration for their spirit, wonderful humour & compassion shines through. After a heavy monsoon, the refugee camp was completely flooded. The scene, she said could have been extrememly depressing, except that the Tibetans thought it was the funniest thing that had ever happened to them.

A brilliant insight into Nepal, the Nepalese & the Tibetans.

        Book Description

This book focuses on a challenging application field of cellular automata: pattern formation in biological systems, such as the growth of microorganisms, dynamics of cellular tissue and tumors, and formation of pigment cell patterns. These phenomena, resulting from complex cellular interactions, cannot be deduced solely from experimental analysis, but can be more easily examined using mathematical models, in particular, cellular automaton models.

While there are various books treating cellular automaton modeling, this interdisciplinary work is the first one covering biological applications. The book is divided into three parts: Part I deals with general principles, theories, and models of pattern formation; Part II examines cellular automaton modeling; and Part III explains various applications. The models and analytic techniques described may be extended to other exciting applications in biology, medicine, and immunology.

        Key topics and features:

        * Provides an introduction and historical account of the principles of biological pattern formation (morphogenesis)

        * Gives an overview of mathematical modeling approaches to morphogenesis, and an introduction to cellular automata and analytic techniques

        * A supplementary web-based Java applet---"Cellular Automaton Simulator"---enables interactive simulation of various cellular automaton applications described in the book; available on the internet at www.biomodeling.info

        * Self-contained presentation is accessible to a broad audience; only basic calculus and linear algebra are required

        * Careful balance of theory, models, and applications useful to both experimentalists and theoreticians

        * Includes suggestions for further research topics

The book is aimed at researchers, practitioners, and students in applied mathematics, mathematical biology, computational physics, bioengineering, and computer science interested in a cellular automaton approach to biological modeling. The book's accessible presentation and interdisciplinary approach make it suitable for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses and seminars in mathematical biology, biomodeling, and biocomputing.

          Book Description

The formation of patterns in developing biological systems involves the spatio-temporal coordination of growth, cell-cell signalling, tissue movement, gene expression and cell differentiation. The interactions of these complex processes are generally nonlinear, and this mathematical modelling and analysis are needed to provide the framework in which to compute the outcome of different hypothesis on modes of interaction and to make experimentally testable predictions. This collection contains papers exploring several aspects of the hierarchy of processes occurring during pattern formation. A number of papers address the modelling of cell movement and deformation, with application to pattern formation within a collection of cells in response to external signalling cues. The results are considered in the context of pattern generation in Dictyostelium discoideum and bacterial colonies. A number of models at the macroscopic level explore the possible mechanisms underlying spatio-temporal pattern generation in early development, focussing on primitive streak, somitogenesis, vertebrate limb development and pigmentation patterning. The latter two applications consider in detail the effects of growth on patterning. The potential of models to generate more complex patterns are considered and models involving different modes of cell-cell signalling are investigated. Pattern selection is analyzed in the context of chemical Turing patterns, which serve as a paradigm for morphogenesis and a model for vegetation patterns is presented.

              Book Description

For centuries, Vietnamese have sustained the history of their nation, both actual and mythic, through their folklore. These stories, passed from generation to generation, contain not only the national saga, but also fundamental cultural values that Vietnamese hold dear. Some stories, like "A Daughter's Love," are imaginative accounts of early Vietnamese history. Others, like "The Anger of the Waters" and the title story, "Two Cakes Fit for a King," provide colorful explanations of the world and how it works. "The Story of Watermelon Island" offers readers a glimpse of the traditional agrarian values and way of life that are the foundation of Vietnamese society. Imaginative and captivating, funny and sometimes tragic, these tales have remained popular and culturally significant for Vietnamese, young and old, for hundreds of years. The intricate illustrations draw on centuries-old painting styles and on natural imagery and everyday life in Vietnam.

              4 out of 5 stars A good contribution........2003-10-10

The authors are to be thanked for bringing to us ten folktales from Vietnam.

The stories dealt with love, betrayal, hope, but also disappointment. There were kings, lovely princesses, as well as smart commoners. Like in any folktale, the good guy ended up winning. The story about the "three drops of blood" does not seem to be genuinely Vietnamese though.

This is a good introductory book for readers who would like to understand a little more about the Vietnamese and their folklore.

He is one of the world's most accomplished figures of modern finance. As chairman and chief executive officer of Citigroup, Sanford "Sandy" Weill has become an American legend, a banking visionary whose innovativeness, opportunism, and even fear drove him from the lowliest jobs on Wall Street to its most commanding heights. In this unprecedented biography, acclaimed Wall Street Journal reporter Monica Langley provides a compelling account of Weill's rise to power. What emerges is a portrait of a man who is as vital and as volatile as the market itself.

Tearing Down the Walls tells the riveting inside story of how a Jewish boy from Brooklyn's back alleys overcame incredible odds and deep-seated prejudices to transform the financial-services industry as we know it today.

Using nearly five hundred firsthand interviews with key players in Weill's life and career -- including Weill himself -- Langley brilliantly chronicles not only his success and scandals but also the shadows of his hidden self: his father's abandonment and his loving marriage; his tyrannical rages as well as his tearful regrets; his fierce sense of loyalty and his ruthless elimination of potential rivals. By highlighting in new and startling detail one man's life in a narrative as richly textured and compelling as a novel, Tearing Down the Walls provides the historical context of the dramatic changes not only in business but also in American society in the last half century.

"The very night that Sanford ""Sandy"" Weill, the chairman and chief executive officer of Citigroup, was being feted on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange as CEO of the Year, the television screens above the floor were flashing danger: A congressional panel was tearing into Jack Grubman, the $20-million-a-year telecommunications analyst who worked for Sandy. Had Grubman and Citigroup favored corporate clients at the expense of average investors? Was Citigroup recommending stocks of troubled companies to get their business? The worst scandal of Sandy Weill's long career was breaking around him. Here, from its very beginning, is the riveting inside story of how a rough-edged kid from Brooklyn overcame incredible odds and deep-seated prejudice to put together Citigroup, the world's largest financial empire, and to transform financial services in America -- for better or worse. Tearing Down the Walls provides an unprecedented look at how business and finance are conducted at the highest levels, with extraordinary insight into the character and motivations of powerful men and women.

4 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2007-04-07

This is a very well written book and is full of details about Sandy Weill but the entire book plays on him being an undertrodden jew, but he fails to take into account that you don't have to be jewish to be the underdog - take Frank Lowrys Pushing the Limits he was jewish lived in the ghetto and there was not one mention that he was a victim he just got on with life and made the best of it. Again this is a very good book just read past the constant comments about how he was always being victimised jew.

5 out of 5 stars Another potential title.......2007-03-06

Another potential title for this book is "Jew-boy from Brooklyn done good". This story does a great job demonstrating how Sandy Weill fought his way to the top, battled anti-semitism, encouraged diversity, and reached a level of success that few can compare to. An excellent read and interesting history lesson of Wall Street during its technology expansion phase.

              5 out of 5 stars Fascinating book.......2006-10-26

Whether you like Sandy Weil or not is not the issue here. This is just a fascinating book and one of the best books I have read in a while. You will not regret the time that you spend reading this.

4 out of 5 stars Sandy Weill is a testament to belief in delivering value.......2006-08-01

This book could be considered a corner stone foundation marker in understanding what makes people relevant, even when they are not.

Sandy Weill shows how consistentcy and planning directed to delivering real value for others will result in producing positive results. Monica Langley describes well how a strong basis in fundamental value wins over adversity and fills in a vacume.

The book does a good job in reflecting the transition from family to business and the process of creating an icon that Sandy Weill became with his challenges as a broker, American Express, Travelers and Citibank. As a reader, you can see how these companies needed Sandy's pivotal instincts to solve their problems and evolve.

5 out of 5 stars finished the whole book overnight.......2005-05-24

As a person used to work in Wall Street and live now in China, I read the Chinese version of this book. It was as if I lived, breathed, angered, and cheered with Weill, Dimon, Prince.... One of the best books about wall street of past 10 years. I ordered this book in English and will read it again, for at least once.

              5 out of 5 stars Soissons 1918.......2000-05-22

On July 18-21, 1918, American and French divisions fought and won the bitter Battle of Soissons. This critical battle was the start of the Aisne-Marne Offensive and marked the turning point of WW1. Soissons was the turning point because the Germans were unable to regain the offense and the Allies began their offensive operations that ended the war.

Colonels Hillman and Johnson's fine work, Soissons 1918, is a detailed study of the Battle of Soissons but, more importantly, it is the only the book available on this critical battle. The authors, both West Point graduates and decorated combat veterans, present a thorough analysis of the inexperienced U.S. Army, a very detailed accounting of the 3-day battle, and a critical look at the command leadership during the battle.

The authors did exhaustive research of the primary and secondary documentation at the U.S. Army of Military History Institute, the U.S. Army Center of Military History, the Library of Congress, and the National Archives. The bibliography and index reflects not only U.S. Army but French and German sources, as well as personal papers of the battle's veterans-survivors. For U.S. Army historians and military history buffs, this book is a must read.

The authors' writing skills make this scholarly work an "exciting, easy" read, editorially well-written, even though the battle was a desperate, bitter and bloody affair. The Texas A&M University Press did a fine job publishing the book: providing numerous photographs, and the all-important maps for a military history work.

This book is particularly important to anyone interested in the U.S. Army's most famous infantry divisions,;the 2nd U.S. Infantry Division - the "Indianheads," and the 1st U.S. Infantry Division- the "Big Red One, the U.S. Marine Corps, and the French Army's French Foreign Legion. The Marine Corps's Marine Brigade, the well-known victors of Belleu Wood, was attached to the 2nd Infantry Division. Two companion books of note, George B. Clark's Devil Dogs: Fighting Marines in WW1, C.A. Brannen's Over There: A Marine in the Great War, provide additional coverage of the battle.

If you, the AMAZON reader, need more persuasion, noted military historians and writers have enthusiastically endorsed the book. Dr. Edward "Mac" Coffman, the renown author of The War to End all Wars, said the book is "an important work." LTG Harold G. Moore, Jr. (USMA'45), the author of We Were Soldiers Once and Young, said of the book: "Superbly researched account of American military leadership and unit actions in the Soissons blood bath...A 'must read' for students and historians of WW1."

In the 1930s, under the administrations of Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt, the United States government adopted a stance toward countries in the Western hemisphere that it called, optimistically, the "Good Neighbor policy." Meant to encourage the principle of self-determination and to cultivate respect for national sovereignty in a time of European imperial expansion, the policy was immediately put to the test by the rise of the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo, who held onto power through a stunning campaign of terror against his citizens and those of neighboring Haiti. While Trujillo massacred his enemies real and imagined, the American government watched patiently--a failure to intervene that, writes historian Eric Paul Roorda, "demonstrated to a generation of Latin American dictators that they were free to run their countries however they wished, so long as they maintained common enemies with the United States: first the fascists, then the communists."

Trujillo made sure to keep favor in Washington by employing a powerful lobby made up of retired American military officers and industrialists. The strategy worked for decades, until Trujillo's excesses became too much to excuse. Then, Roorda writes, presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy gave aid to Trujillo's enemies, who eventually succeeded in assassinating the dictator in 1961. This well-stated, cautionary tale of foreign policy gone awry has implications for our time, and it makes for fascinating reading. --Gregory McNamee

                          Book Description

The question of how U.S. foreign policy should manage relations with autocratic governments, particularly in the Caribbean and Latin America, has always been difficult and complex. In The Dictator Next Door Eric Paul Roorda focuses on the relations between the U.S. and the Dominican Republic following Rafael Trujillo’s seizure of power in 1930. Examining the transition from the noninterventionist policies of the Hoover administration to Roosevelt’s Good Neighbor policy, Roorda blends diplomatic history with analyses of domestic politics in both countries not only to explore the political limits of American hegemony but to provide an in-depth view of a crucial period in U.S. foreign relations.
Although Trujillo’s dictatorship was enabled by prior U.S. occupation of the Dominican Republic, the brutality of his regime and the reliance on violence and vanity to sustain his rule was an untenable offense to many in the U.S. diplomatic community, as well as to certain legislators, journalists, and bankers. Many U.S. military officers and congressmen, however—impressed by the civil order and extensive infrastructure the dictator established—comprised an increasingly powerful Dominican lobby. What emerges is a picture of Trujillo at the center of a crowded stage of international actors and a U.S. government that, despite events such as Trujillo’s 1937 massacre of 12,000 Haitians, was determined to foster alliances with any government that would oppose its enemies as the world moved toward war.
Using previously untapped records, privately held papers, and unpublished photographs, Roorda demonstrates how caution, confusion, and conflicting goals marked U.S. relations with Trujillo and set the tone for the ambivalent Cold War relations that prevailed until Trujillo’s assassination in 1961. The Dictator Next Door will interest Latin Americanists, historians, political scientists, and specialists in international relations and diplomacy.

This book is very informative on the history of my beloved country. Mr. Roorda did extensive research regarding the history of the Domincan Republic which makes it essential to fully understand the reasons behind my uncle's way of governing. Americans still to this day need to better understand the way, the hispanic mind thinks, and the way we are! Once americans understand this, they will be better informed when they opiniate on latin american affairs. When you research the past before my uncle, it becomes quite clear the reason that when you read into the inaffective governments before him, nothing was accomplished. How many weak Ceo's in American Corporations have been successful? My uncle built a country out of manure! clear and simple! Mr. Roorda has my compliments.
It will provide a better understanding to Dominican history, for individuals who have a love of world history. Mr. Roorda states in the begining of the book, that my uncle made it difficult for American Companies to do business in the Dominican Republic, of course! his main concern was for the best interest of his country, period! so, Mr. Roorda, my compliments.
                          Sincerely and Respectfully,

5 out of 5 stars An essential read.......2003-11-08

There are very few actually good readable books on the Caribbean islands. There are even fewer books on the Dominican republic and Haiti. The only books that come to mind besides this one are `Why the Cocks fight' by Wucker and `death of a dictator' by Diederich. This book is a very good account of the early years of Trujillo and his relations with America. Trujillo is best remembered for the massacre of the Haitians, immigrants who had invaded his country. Other topics are covered in detail including the Jewish refugees, WWII and FDR interest in the Caribbean. An essential history of American involvement and the history of this important country.

3 out of 5 stars Thrilling views on a crucial issue, but poorly substantiated.......2000-12-31

This book approaches a topic which deserves serious attention by scholars of international relations - much more than is happening. It approaches this topic from an interesting and rather revisionist point of view, offering the author's views and some interpretations. Yet, the study is not so subjective, and not at all substantiated by facts. All in all interesting reading, new views to talk and argue about, but nothing really new or inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Good intentions gone bad........2000-05-28

Eric Paul Roorda's book is a very interesting study in how well-intentioned U.S. policy backfired. Beginning with Hoover and continuing with FDR, the U.S. tried to be a "good neighbor" to Latin American nations. In other words, the U.S. ceased to intervene at the drop of a hat. In the case of the Dominican Republic, this new policy allowed a ruthless military dictator with fascist tendencies, Rafael Trujillo, to seize power. Despite warnings from those in the know, the U.S. held fast to its non-intervention policy and allowed Trujillo to hold power for years. The book documents all of this as well as Trujillo's well-organized and continual lobbying effort to gain the approval from U.S. officials that he craved. I had thought for a long time that we should stay out of the business of other nations, but this book certainly casts doubt on the wisdom of that approach. Highly recommended.

                          Book Description

Captain Paul Watson has rammed fishing trawlers, smashed whaling ships, sailed boldly into Soviet-controlled waters, and stood bravely on an ice floe between a baby harp seal and an oncoming seal boat. In this daring and sprawling memoir, the captain of the Sea Shepherd recounts his remarkable life on the front lines in the war to stop the viscious slaughter of the Canadian harp seal.

Seal Wars opens in 1996 with Paul Watson -- holed up in a hotel with Martin Sheen in the Magdalen Islands and facing an attacking mob of angry sealers -- being rescued by police and airlifted to safety. Watson recounts the childhood experiences that shaped his adult consciousness and environmental ethic. He records a history of the seal hunt (including all the tragedies, brutalities, and government mismanagement and obfuscation) from its beginning up to the rescue campaigns he courageously led from the prow of the Sea Shepherd.

Starting in 1976 with a Greenpeace crew off Labrador, Paul Watson has braved numerous forays onto the ice floes, many with such celebrities as Brigitte Bardot, Farley Mowat, Martin Sheen, and Pierce Brosnan. He has served time in prison, debated politicians, and quite often put his life on the line. In a passionate defense of environmental responsibility, Seal Wars guides us through the highs and lows, the defeats and successes of Watson's untiring devotion to this noble cause.

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opener! .......2006-02-08

I feel so foolish after reading this book. I thought that all it would take to end the barbaric and cruel seal "hunts" is join along with millions of others who are against it, let it be known in a letter or an email and wait to see what happens. I guess I could never fathom a good people, a good government that would allow animal cruelty and to allow it as a proud tradition, a heritage, a right. Yet the world has not seen even a inkling of what really happens come March every year. Cameras aren't allowed. Videos aren't allowed to record the cruelty. If by chance cruelty is recorded, it is a fake, a lie, made up.

I NEVER IMAGINED A GOVERNMENT THAT WOULD ALLOW SUCH CRUELTY. I never imagined a government that would defend brutality to animals and to people! I never imagined this country - the country that allows all this - would want a person who defends an innocent animal, because of what he was witnessing, because of the horrible pain he saw year after year after year, because he couldn't sit back and do nothing, a government that would rather see him dead or imprisoned because of it, yes the government! What an eye opener. How any man could take the most gentle creature on the face of the earth and torture it is beyond my imagination. These people have no compassion, not an iota of mercy. IT'S HAPPENING! AND A GOVERNMENT THAT CALLS THEMSELVES A GOOD PEOPLE IS ALLOWING IT AND PRAISING IT!

Paul Watson's title "Seal Wars" is right on. This book is about a war to protect the seals. Mr. Watson will take you year by year into his life as a Sea Shepherd to the harp seals. He has fought valiantly throughout the years to protect the harp seals and he himself has suffered, but he has never given up. The war still rages on today.

These creatures, very gentle and trusting of people, are living their lives on the ice as they were born on this earth until March of every single year. The seals don't expect it, they don't know it, they trust humans, and then a man comes at a baby seal with the bottom of his boot hard to the face then skinned while still alive, its mother can only watch helplessly as it is squealing in pain, or a club to the head before being skinned (40%+ seals are skinned alive!) or a hakapik into another baby, the heartless fisherman dragging it across the ice while it is still alive, the seal crying in pain - it is only a few days old; a ship - a Coast Guard ship at that - who run the little animals down on the ice purposely, out of spite for those who are trying to protect them; baby seals can't swim, or even a bullet to a mother seals head, for one vain and unnecessary thing - fur.

These animals suffer and they suffer for vain. They will continue to suffer until more people become angry and more people get active. Read this book! READ IT AND DO SOMETHING!! DO WHAT YOU CAN! I guarantee if you have a heart in you, you will want to after reading this! There are several causes on the internet you can find to join. Paul Watson's Sea Shepherd is one of them. Not enough people are speaking up and doing something. There's simply not enough people who care. It is discouraging to read, but we should never let discouragement keep us from speaking for those who can't! Read this book and pass it on and DO SOMETHING!

I was deeply touched by one part of the book in which Mr. Watson describes a peaceful visit, yet another campaign to save them; he says "Looking into those huge, dark, innocent eyes reminded me again of why we had to champion these creatures. The seals were indeed the little lambs of God, their vulnerable innocence in such contrast to the raw, mindless cruelty of the ice floes, a cruelty dwarfed only by the merciless, mindful cruelty of man. I loved them every one. And what we love we defend."

4 out of 5 stars Everyone who cares about earth should read this book.......2005-05-31

Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society are true heroes, and this book will inspire you to help end the barbaric Canadian seal hunt once and for all. This book is a great story - and very hard to put down.

                          5 out of 5 stars A Great Man, A Great Story.......2005-04-23

I am 3/4 done with this book but couldn't wait to post a review on Amazon. This is a great story about a great man who has courage, vision, compassion, a sense of justice and humor, to boot! It is hard for me to put this book down. Sometimes I can't wait to see what will happen next and other times, I am cracking up from their antics! (ie. pie filling in their cannons...hysterical!) They are so funny while on such a serious mission....the best way to be, I guess. There is everything in it....politics, travel, adventure, culture, sabotage, suspense, and silliness. The story is interesting on many levels. I learned alot about the history of sealing, the beauty and danger of the ice floes, Newfoundland, the tensions between the English and French of eastern Canada, the corruption of the Canadian government and what it is like to be the only ship among 80 sealing ships out there in the bitter cold trying to stop the slaughter of these innocent beings.
But this book is more than adventure and interest. The virtues of Paul Watson and his crew come thru on every page. These are selfless, dedicated, just, brave men (and a few women) who are risking their all to save innocent seals from being hacked to death. I feel in reading this book I am picking up on the greatness of these people and it feels wonderful - especially living in a world where most people do everything for their own interest only. I felt inspired to be "great" and do more - and I have done more. My hats off to Watson and all others who work to protect the seals. They are the best and I don't know what this world would be like without folks like him. I kiss the ground in thanks that there are people like him. I especially enjoyed Watson's commentary throughout the book that is emotional and often spiritual. Thank you Paul Watson and Sea Shepherd for all you have done. I am with you in spirit all the way. Bless you many times over.
