Customer Reviews:
A Superior Book!.......2000-06-10
A truly wonderful book! This coffee table format book by Canadian couple Gary and Joanie McGuffin tells the story of their 2,000 mile circumnavigation of Lake Superior - the largest expanse of fresh water in the world. The book contains approx 140 wonderful photographs, many of them breathtaking. Gary McGuffin is a very talented photographer who has created many unique photos of this great, beautiful lake. He has made use of unusual lighting on many occassions to produce stunning photos. I particularly liked some of the winter shots - I could feel the chill looking at the photos of the ice-lined caves. The personal narrative of the couple's trip was written by Joanie and is an interesting read however could have been made better by inclusion of maps. Also the layout makes reading difficult at times with the type sometimes extending across the full width of the page. The book is superbly produced - printed in Canada - with excellent photo reproductions on high quality paper. At 28 bucks this book is excellent value...well worth buying for the photos alone.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Map.......2007-04-13
I purchased this map to use while on vacation and it was perfect for that purpose. It is laminated and the right size to fit in a hip pocket, purse, etc. The streets on the main map are printed large enough to easily read and many landmarks are clearly highlighted. There is an expanded map of the downtown area including Inner Harbor that does a fantastic job of showing you all the details you need to navigate the area. There are also indexes for streets, universities, museums, hotels, shopping, and other places of interest. While this is by no means an exhaustive street atlas, it does provide a great tool for someone visiting the city. It is especially useful if you plan to focus on the Inner Harbor area where all the major tourist attractions are. It was well worth the few dollars it cost.

Walking in Baltimore: An Intimate Guide to the Old City
ASIN: 0929387279 |

Customer Reviews:
Superb Baltimore Street History Reference Book!.......2002-10-16
This book contains the finest collection of the history of Baltimore streets I have ever seen. The book describes the general history of many major streets and numerous minor streets throughout Baltimore. The streets are listed in alphabetical order. Many photos of historical landmarks accompany the book. Mention of numerous notable persons is made in regards to the history of many streets.
Although this reference work is not comprehensively exhaustive ( it doesn't mention every Baltimore street ) it is very worth your while to peruse. For instance, this book doesn't list Fear Avenue which is located two blocks from the Pimlico Racetrack. Fear Avenue was named in honor of my great-grandfather Boston Fear and his two sons: George Fear and Frederick Fear. They were major contributors to the Pimlico Racetrack during the early part of the twentieth century. My great-grandfather Boston Fear was a German immigrant who created the suburb of Walbook: Baltimore's very first suburb. Walbrook was originally named Fearville in honor of Boston Fear. Boston Fear gave Francis X. Bushman ( Hollywood's very first film superstar) his very first job in life.
I would highly recommend that all libraries in the state of Maryland possess a copy of this book for their Baltimore history section.
Foliage for Your Family Tree.......2000-09-13
This book is excellent for anyone who has family they are working on from Baltimore. It goes alphabetically street by street and lists many interesting facts about the history of the street. Often in our research we find that a relative lived for instance on Charles Street. But we have NO idea what it was like 100 years ago. Streetwise Baltimore provides just that. Additionally at the back of the book they go through a similiar process with some Baltimore neighborhoods. When I bought the book I had NO idea I would find a picture of my great grandfathers store front on page 145.... This brought tears to my eyes and made my Mother a very happy lady. This is a quality book... well worth the dollars spent.

Customer Reviews:
Decent Map.......2005-10-21
Despite the copyright date, I have been using this map to get around Baltimore for the last three months and have yet to find anything outdated. City streets usually stay put. My only complaint is that it doesn't cover enough area. You are still very much in the city when you leave the part that the map covers. Overall, an extremely useful map.
Streetwise Baltimore.......2005-09-05
This map had a copyright date from the early 90s, which wasn't mentioned in the product description. I doubt the map is up to date. I sent it back.

Customer Reviews:
The Best Book Ever .......2007-04-25
This book is about that girl chass what has been moving for her hole life and didnt event know her real name until the end of the first book. She had been doing this because if you read the book before this one wich is the first one you would know all about Kyle Van Epic and when he did. This book is mostly about him trying to catch Chass and her mother again.
In this book my favorite part of the book was when Chass was being chased my the police and she was thinking about how she was going to get away. When this we happning it was my favorite part because she was saying how she wasnt that athletic and she didnt realy like to be in gym class and everything but she still jumpted and caught the wire. That was also my favorite part of the book because it was very unexpected and I didnt do that she was going to do that.
I would recemend this book to everyone because it is a awsome book and i love it and i think that they would love it too. I would mostly recomend that book to people who really want to have some adventure, and to people who have read the first book.
Club Dread.......2007-04-25
Club Dread is the sequal to Fake ID, wich was also a great book. But, this book is about a young girl in high school named, Chastity, who is a musian looking for a gig. When she winesses the murder of Josh Emmit she's the prime subject and the police are after her. Her or her moms names can not get out or else the person that they are running from will catch up with them. She has to figure out who killed Josh before she is caught by the police.
My favorite part of this book is when all of her new friends are in the basement of Marco's house and they find the recordings of Josh Emmit. Iliked this part because it makes the whole rest of the book make sence. This part puts all the clues together.
I will deffinatatly recomend this book. This book was as great as the first. I hope Walter Sorrells countines with this series. This books made me keep on reading and reading. I read each one of these books in three days, and there are alot of pages. I loved this book and I hope you will to.
EXCELLENT!!!.......2006-12-29
Purchased this book and the first one (Fake ID) for my 13 year old daughter as a Christmas gift. She LOVED them both. Said they were the best books she has read all year. Haven't seen her this enthused about a book since Harry Potter a few years back!

Book Description
This unique volume provides a comprehensive and up-to-date examination of all aspects of the biology of the Old World monkey genus, Theropithecus, which evolved alongside our human ancestors. This genus is represented today by only one rare species. The authors explore the fossil history and evolution of the genus, its biogeography, comparative evolutionary biology and anatomy, and the behavior and socioecology of the living and extinct representatives of the genus. The parallels between the evolution of Theropithecus and early hominids are discussed. There are also two chapters of particular significance that describe how an innovative and exciting approach to the modeling of the causes of species extinction can be used with great success. This highly multidisciplinary approach provides a rare and insightful account of the evolutionary biology of this fascinating and once highly successful group of primates.

Book Description
More than ten million `poison gas' shells, mortar bombs, etc., lie hidden in Europe, many of them relics from World War I. Some were fired and failed to detonate, others were abandoned in old ammunition dumps. Most retain their load of chemical warfare (CW) agents. They are turned up daily in the course of farming and construction. Many European nations have permanent departments concerned with their collection and destruction.
Old munitions, when discovered, are usually heavily corroded and difficult to identify. Is it a CW munition? Or an explosive? If CW, what agent does it contain? Once identified, one has to select a destruction method. Some of the methods that have been proposed are less than perfect, and are often complicated by the presence of extraneous chemicals, either mixed with the CW agents during manufacture or formed over decades in the ground.
Of particular interest are the insiders' reports on the German CW programmes of both World Wars, and the current status of Russian chemical armaments.

Customer Reviews:
Good book for signal and control systems.......2005-04-28
I'm currently taking one of Prof. Perdikaris' classes for real-time systems, and I've been using this book to help me understand motor control systems and other stuff in the class. George covers a lot of information in the book, starting with fundamental info about ADC/DAC, continuous systems (w/ Laplace), discrete systems (w/ Z transformations), and other general signal analysis stuff that you'll need. The book then covers filter design and signal processing methods. Then covers how to design, analyze, and optimize control systems (using various methods, including open/closed loop systems and PID/PDFF systems). I believe George has done a lot of the original ground breaking research in modern control systems, PID, and PDFF over the past few decades. I wasn't too interested in control systems before taking this class, but I'm starting to find it pretty interesting and may consider taking a control class in the future.
There are a lot of topics covered in the book and a lot of heavy math/electrical stuff to learn, but I think he keeps stuff relevant and understandable. If you are into signal processing or control system work, then you may want to consider picking this up.
A great textbook for computer controlled systems........1998-01-20
This is an excellent textbook for computer controlled systems.
The information presented is invalueable in today's digital world.
If you are teaching or learning computer controlled systems you should consider this book.

Book Description
This is the story of a teacher who comes to realize that his most liberal and idealistic values about fairness and compassion may often have reprehensible personal motivations; of a young man who discovers that quitting can be more noble than persisting; of a young girl who dreams of equity in a male world; of a faculty wife whose quiet and patient service is rewarded with empowerment.
Customer Reviews:
An insight into the mind of a class master.......2003-01-27
I have wondered what drives the dedicated educators, the really good ones that do not appear to have a life outside the school. These teachers are most obvious in prep schools because they seem to be the institution, active for decades not merely in the classroom but on the fields or in the theatre each afternoon and at the Saturday events. They somehow connect with the kids and get them to strive to do something. It is clear from Standing Lessons that Rindfleisch writes from his own very rich experience in that world.
I enjoyed reading Standing Lessons as a parent as much as I enjoyed reading Salinger's Catcher in the Rye as a young man. The very credible Bartley character reveals both the self-doubts and the source of his enthusiasm while recounting one school year. Bartley's impossible desire to remain a hero to his adolescent daughter, his efforts to navigate very different problems for two of his students and his rationalization of his own baseball coaching performance soon come to reflect the reader's ongoing struggle to find the right path.
Standing Lessons is a fast read. It brought me great pleasure and I highly recommend it.
Book of the Year.......2002-07-01
If you read one novel this year, Standing Lessons would be my recommendation. Rindfleisch has honed his skills on the novella and short story and now gives us a book of monumental proportion and importance. It will embrace you from start to finish. It is about teaching, about morality both real and perceived, it is humorous and satirical and it is about one scholastic year in a private rural New England boarding school. It is also about Jack Bartley - teacher, coach and dorm master - the most complex simple character who, for me, served as both a mirror and window for values then and now. The reader will greatly appreciate Bartley's battles with Mrs. Powell and the lessons that this relationship serves up. Bartley as inept coach and Bartley questioning his skills as a father provide us with glorious insight into our own foibles.
Jack Bartley stands beside John Irving's Owen Meany as a most memorable literary character. This book will not disappoint you.
